WHAT IS THE NWT HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES SYSTEM?

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services System is made up of four organizations:

• The Department of Health and Social Services

• The Hay River Health and Social Services Authority

• The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority

• The Tłįchǫ Community Services Agency - Health

The three authorities and the department work together in partnership to provide services and care to a population of 45,000 Northwest Territories residents in 33 communities, as well as residents in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut.

The entire Northwest Territories Health and Social Services System is made up of approximately 2,360 employees!

UNIVERSITY LINGO EXPLAINED

Certificate

A certificate program is typically 6 months - 1 year long and is a great option for entry-level employment, where you gain foundational skills/knowledge in your area of interest.

Diploma

Diploma programs typically take 2 - 3 years to complete, and offer students handson, technical training in their area of interest. You can use a college diploma to access many positions in your field, or as a pre-requisite for other College and University programs.

Undergraduate / Bachelors Degree

An Undergraduate or Bachelors Degree is the first level of university studies you can take after finishing high school. These programs are typically 3 - 5 years long.

Graduate / Masters

These programs allow you to further specialize in your field of study and can only be achieved if you have completed an undergraduate program. Most graduate programs have a pre-requisite and are typically 1 to 2 years long.

Doctor of Medicine (MD)

This program is the next step to becoming a physician after completing your undergraduate program. These programs typically take 4 years to complete and are followed by a Residency Program (which range from 2 - 8 years depending on your area of specialty).

Practicums, Internships, Placements

Practicums, internships and placements all provide opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience before graduation, and to use the skills they’ve been learning in the classroom in a real setting with patients and clients. Each program is different, and not all schools require this to graduate.

CHOOSING A CAREER - NEXT STEPS

Choosing a career can feel overwhelming, but if you break the process down into smaller steps it becomes much easier to manage. Check out these tips below on getting prepared for a health and social services career while you’re still in high school.

1. Build your Skills and Experience

While you may not have the education and training to work in health and social services yet, you can begin building other important skills right now! Skills such as time management, leadership, creative problem solving, and teamwork can be learned through:

• Volunteering in the community

• Job shadowing and summer employment

• Signing up for high school courses that you’ll need to get into your post-secondary program

These experiences are great additions to your resume and set you up for success in the future!

2. Do your Research

Just like studying for a test or deciding what type of cellphone to purchase, doing your research about your future career helps you to understand what’s important to you and what you can expect. Spend time learning about:

• The career field(s) you want to pursue

• Careers and opportunities in the Northwest Territories

• Your future schools and programs

Consider visiting the Student Information Centre at your future schools, watching videos, reading articles, visiting websites for health and social services associations, and more!

3. Speak to Professionals

When planning your next steps, sometimes the best place to start is by speaking to people with experience! Consider contacting:

NWT EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

To gain a high school diploma in the NWT, students must earn 100 credits from grade 10 to grade 12 in the following areas:

• English Language Arts (ELA) – or French for students enrolled in a Francophone school (15 credits)

• Social Studies (10 credits)

• Mathematics (10 credits)

• Science (10 credits)

• CALM (3 credits)

• Community Service (1 credit)

• Physical Education (3 credits)

CLERK INTERPRETER

Salary in the NWT: $61,074 - $72,930

A Clerk Interpreter’s role is to promote communication in a clinic setting. As the first point of contact they are responsible for greeting clients in person and over the phone, and relaying important information to other staff, physicians, and clients. Interpreters provide translation and/or explanations of care plans to the client to ensure they understand the care they are receiving.

Clerk Interpreters are excellent communicators, comfortable working independently, empathetic and patient, and have great time management skills.

EDUCATION

Clerk Interpreters need to have their Grade 12 diploma, be fluent in a location-appropriate Indigenous language, along with the completion of both a Records Management Course and a Medical Terminology Course.

CULTURAL SAFETY OFFICER

Cultural Safety Officers develop cultural safety and anti-racism initiatives, provide administrative support, and do research.

They are passionate about creating change and improving the health status of the Indigenous population. They achieve this by conducting research, engaging with communities, and providing training to health and social services staff.

Cultural Safety Officers are committed to lifelong learning, have strong skills in public speaking and communication, are creative problem solvers, and care passionately about their community and anti-racism in health and social services.

They enjoy working in a team environment and have strong relationship-building skills.

EDUCATION

Cultural Safety Officers need to complete a bachelor's degree in a health-related field, which typically takes four years to complete.

COMMUNITY HEALTH REPRESENTATIVE

Salary in the NWT: $68,075 - $81,296

# of years in school: 6 months

Community Health Representatives work with community members, health and social services professionals and other agencies to promote and provide healthy lifestyle programs. Community Health Representatives work as liaisons between the community and the health authority, and advocate for the needs of community members and their families.

Community Health Representatives collaborate in research and special projects to offer disease prevention programming, school health programs, and immunization clinics.

To do this work they need to have strong communication skills, demonstrate empathy, have a passion for healthcare promotion and patient advocacy, and understand the importance of confidentiality.

Community Health Representatives need to complete a community health representative training program.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND WELLNESS PLANNER

Salary in the NWT: $86,112 - $102,882

Community Development and Wellness Planners play a key role in supporting communities in the funding research, and in the development, implementation, and reporting of community-based wellness programs.

The Planner needs to develop strong relationships in the community, have strong research skills, and good communication skills in order to provide advice on community wellness and development.

Community Development and Wellness Planners require a bachelor’s degree in Health, Social, and Community Development areas.

PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER

# of years in school: 1 year

Personal Support Workers play a vital role in healthcare, working with other healthcare professionals to help patients and clients lead active and fulfilling lives. They assist clients with activities of daily living - including meal prep, feeding, and personal care. They understand human physiology, anatomy, mental and physical health, and use this knowledge in combination with patient care techniques in many types of facilities including hospitals, private homes, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.

Personal Support Workers need to be compassionate and patient, have good hand/eye coordination and strength to assist clients, strong communication and social skills, and be able to work independently.

EDUCATION

Personal Support Workers need to complete a one year program in Personal Support Work, including a practicum.

RESIDENT CARE AIDE

# of years in school: 1 (+ 12 weeks)

A Resident Care Aide is a member of the resident care team who provides personalized care for residents living in long term care facilities. The Resident Care Aide is a resident’s advocate and helps with communication between the resident, their family and healthcare professionals.

Resident Care Aides ensure the safety and comfort of the resident, helps them maintain their hygiene, be physically active, and promotes their independence and mental well-being in a respectful and compassionate manner.

To do this work, Resident Care Aides need to be compassionate and patient, have good hand/eye coordination and strength to assist clients, strong communication and social skills, and be able to work independently.

EDUCATION

Resident Care Aides need to complete a one year program in Certified Nursing Assistant or Long-Term Care Aide Program, including a practicum in an applicable institution, group home, or homecare setting.

HOME SUPPORT WORKER

Salary in the NWT: $65,715 - $78,468 # of years in school: 1 (+ 12 weeks)

A Home Support Worker is a member of the resident care team and provides personalized care and home management support to clients of the Home Care program by assisting with activities of daily living, respite and palliative care to ensure the continued health, safety, comfort, and independence of clients.

They need to be compassionate and patient, have good hand/eye coordination and strength, need to be able to remain calm and professional, have strong communication and social skills, and be able to work independently.

EDUCATION

Home Support Workers need to complete a one year program in Long-Term Care Aide or Personal Care Attendant Programs, including a practicum in an applicable institution, group home, or homecare setting.

LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE

Licensed Practical Nurses work in a wide range of healthcare settings, assisting in assessing and monitoring patients, administering medications, performing procedures, and providing advice on healthy lifestyle choices, management and prevention of disease, and helping patient's return to optimal health.

Licensed Practical Nurses have strong skills in communications, critical thinking, problem solving, and crisis management.

Licensed Practical Nurses need to take a Practical Nursing Diploma program. The education and certification usually take two years to complete.

Community Health Nurses provide health programs in a Community setting including direct nursing care to patients, and programs such as Well-Child/Woman/Man clinics, pre- and post-natal clinics, school health programs, immunization programs, and communicable disease surveillance and treatment.

Community Health Nurses should be compassionate, caring, remain calm in high stress and emergency situations, have strong problem solving and communication skills, and able to work independently and in collaboration with other professionals.

EDUCATION

Community Health Nurses require the completion of a bachelor’s degree in nursing and two years relevant experience.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE

Salary in the NWT:

Public Health Nurses develop, implement, and evaluate public health programs and services to prevent and/or minimize the impact of communicable diseases on at-risk clients, families, and communities.

They also develop and carry out activities to eliminate the risk of vaccine-preventable and communicable diseases and improve the health status of clients by providing assessment, education, and immunization.

Public Health Nurses practice in diverse settings such as, clinics, homes, schools, hospitals, primary care clinics, shelters, and non-governmental organizations and in public areas, such as malls.

EDUCATION

Public Health Nurses require the completion of a bachelor of Science in Nursing or a bachelor of Nursing degree program.

REGISTERED NURSE

Registered Nurses work in a variety of healthcare settings including surgery, chemotherapy, paediatrics, obstetrics, and more. Registered Nurses’ assess patient needs, administer medications and treatments, assist in surgeries, and monitor patients in collaboration with the rest of the healthcare team.

They can be found working in hospitals, clinics, communities, nursing homes, correctional facilities, home care agencies, education, leadership, and research.

Registered Nurses should be caring and compassionate, be able to deal with stress, have strong problem solving and communication skills, and able to work independently and in collaboration with other professionals.

Registered Nurses require the completion of a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

NURSE PRACTITIONER

Nurse Practitioners are autonomous practitioners who provide clients with advanced health assessments, diagnosis, intervention, and appropriate follow up care. Nurse Practitioners provide direction, leadership, and specialized knowledge of primary health care.

Nurse Practitioners have advanced training that qualifies them to assess, diagnose, and treat patients. They can also order and interpret tests, and prescribe medications.

Nurse Practitioners can be found working in hospitals, clinics, communities, long-term care, specialty units, emergency care, education, leadership, and research.

They have strong time management, communication, and decision-making skills, and can effectively manage stressful emergency situations.

EDUCATION

To be a Nurse Practitioner, you need to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s in advanced practice nursing. The required education and training usually take six years to complete.

FAMILY PHYSICIAN

Salary in the NWT: $213,000-$340,000

# of years in school: 10 years

Family physicians work with patients, from babies to senior citizens, to diagnose and treat disease, physiological and psychiatric disorders, injuries, and other health related problems. Family physicians can be found working in clinics, hospitals, public health, continuing care facilities, and/or private practice.

Additional enhanced training is available in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, Surgical Skills, and Obstetrical Surgical Skills.

Physicians have a commitment to lifelong learning, can work long hours, and have strong social, communication, and problem-solving skills.

EDUCATION

All Physicians require:

Residency training for Family Physicians is typically 2 years in length.

SPECIALIST PHYSICIAN

Salary in the NWT: $345,000-$433,000

# of years in school: 13 years

Specialist Physicians work on preventing, diagnosing, and treating specific types of diseases, disorders, and injuries.

Areas of specialty found in Northwest Territories hospitals include pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, psychiatry, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and emergency medicine. There are more than 50 specialties and sub-specialties recognized in Canada.

Specialist Physicians can be found working in hospitals, specialized clinics, and private practice. Specialist Physicians often work long hours, rotating shifts, or on-call, and may be required to travel.

EDUCATION

All Physicians require:

• An undergraduate degree (4 years),

• A medical graduate degree (4 years), and

• Post-graduate residency training.

Residency training for Specialist Physicians is typically 5 years in length.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICER

Salary in the NWT: $98,787 - $117,975 # of years in school: 4 to 6 years

Environmental Health Officers are responsible for implementing environmental public health programs that control factors in the human environment that may adversely affect people’s health. Environmental Health Officers work on programs that provide guidelines for drinking water, food service and supply, communicable disease investigation and control, air quality, community and environmental sanitation, tobacco control, and personal services (i.e. piercing, tattoos, hair and nail establishments).

Environmental Health Officers assess, respond to, and mitigate risks to public health and safety by conducting inspections of premises and activities, and issuing or rescinding permits. They will also review, assess, and approve relevant plans and proposals such as building system plans for food establishments, water treatment plants, or development proposals for mines.

EDUCATION

Environmental Health Officers require a bachelor degree or graduate certificate in environmental health.

EPIDEMIOLOGIST

Salary in the NWT: $103,350 - $123,455

# of years in school: 6 years

Epidemiologists provide leadership and expertise on the analysis of population health determinants and outcomes. They design surveillance and data collection methods, investigate, and analyze information regarding diseases and health status.

Epidemiologists are knowledgeable in biostatistical research and analysis and are comfortable presenting analytical results in reports and presentations.

Epidemiologists are focused on improving and preserving the health and wellness of the public, while improving the effectiveness and efficiency of health and social programs.

EDUCATION

To be an Epidemiologist, you need a master's in epidemiology.

FACILITY PLANNER

Salary in the NWT: $113,120 - $135,135

# of years in school: 2 to 4 years

Facility Planners ensure that the necessary facilities and equipment are available for staff to provide services to residents.

They do this by consulting with the health authorities, departments, communities, and staff to determine their needs, and are responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring facilities and equipment, and managing operations and maintenance.

Facility Planners are strong multitaskers, enjoy challenges and problem solving, have strong skills in math and communications, and enjoy working with technology.

EDUCATION

Facility Planners require at least a diploma in architectural or engineering technology (2 to 3 years) or a bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering (4 years).

HEALTH ECONOMIC POLICY ADVISOR

Salary in the NWT: $103,350 - $123,455

# of years in school: 4 years

Health Economic Policy Advisors are responsible for conducting research on issues related to financial policies that directly affect the health and social services system.

They develop guidelines that monitor and evaluate financial operations across the system to maximize effective spending. They also present their research and recommendations to others through presentations, reports, and training programs.

Health Economic Policy Advisors have very strong skills in math, enjoy working with computers and data, are excellent problem solvers, have strong research and communication skills, and are comfortable presenting and public speaking.

EDUCATION

Health Economic Policy Advisors need a bachelor's degree in a finance area, which typically takes four years to complete. They also need a professional accounting designation.

INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL

Salary in the NWT: $98,787 - $117,975

# of years in school: 4.5 years

Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Coordinators are responsible for advising, supporting, implementing maintenance, and evaluation of IPAC practices, to minimize risk of infectious disease for clients, and staff and visitors.

IPAC Coordinators require strong problem solving and decision-making skills, need to be able to work under pressure, and are sensitive to the geographical and cultural needs of clients, staff, and visitors. They also need to understand how community and culture impact the delivery of services.

EDUCATION

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Nursing or other Healthcare Profession and a minimum of three years of work-related experience in a health or social services discipline are required, along with the completion of an IPAC Canada approved Infection Protection and Control course.

MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST

Salary in the NWT: $68,075 - $81,296 # of years in school: 6 months to 1 year

Medical Transcriptionists are responsible for the transcription of medical reports, letters, and other medical documentation for the health and social services team. Medical Transcriptionists are often employed by hospitals, medical clinics, and/or doctor’s offices.

They have excellent written and oral communication skills, work efficiently and independently, have strong memories, and are detail oriented.

EDUCATION
