CONTENTS This portfolio is a curation of design projects, developed during my undergraduate student of architecture, at D.C.Patel School of Architecture, A.P.I.E.D., Vidhyanagar and professional experience at Architecture firm.

The selected works are to show my exploration in the fields of environment design, Social Interactions and Contextual influences in architecture.

A DIALOGUE WITH PAST

Extending Markets of Agra to River-front

This thesis study looks upon the study of the initial trade routes & historical markets of the world, which compared to one of the most prominent cities of Mughal Empire ‘Agra’ Markets which are slowly losing their touch on the city, due to industrialization and sensitivity towards these markets.

Primary Design Drivers

Examining the initial query of the link of the past public spaces to the present, one can re-look at the markets of the world and its “Dialogue” with the past and present.

“A Dialogue with Past” for the city of Agra, is in terms of connection with monuments, tourists, markets and the locals.

Neglected for long period of time can be threating to the culture, thus the thesis focuses on the rectifying the current situation of the International monuments, Handicraft Market spaces and people associated with it.

To generate “Dialogue With the Past” the site was strategically chosen between Archaeological monuments a land bandwidth that was generated due to change in course of the river Yamuna, near the archaeological sites.

Zoning and Defining Axis : The site is zoned into 2 major parts based on functions : 1. Formal Zone - For dignitorial and cultural functions 2. Informal Zone - For the craft hub and recreational public realm.

Division of Land into 200 Meters stretch Modules : The linear stretch was divided into 200 m by 25 m module for development of case sensitive design.

From the axis of the Agra fort, and other axis of at approx 75 degrees is used.

Main vehicular circulation is identified with the : 1. Parking spot near the roads and existing trees 2. Connection to nearby Conservation Park 3. Amphitheater at the existing depression on the site.

The linear block was majorly Categorized into 3 parts : 1. River edge - Public Area 2. Craft Hub - Consumer Area 3. Service Road - for emergency Defining Smaller Axis :

Smaller Axis at an angle with respect to main axis & also at 75 degrees are introduced, to guide the built. The Angular Axises were chosen to break the “Linear Nature of site” and to “Abstract the Random Nature of Market Streets of Agra”.

Identifying the Built :

Based on the axises choose the built was identified according to the site conditions. The site maintains an approximate slope of 6-8 meters in the 25 meter width.

The Abstraction of Street :

From the axis, a sky walk was identified to create a Street at the highest level.

The street connects the Built to the Service Road level.

Main Circulation and Services :

The site is divided into 3 levels, 1. Ramp of length 80 meters is provided to cover the height 2. Intermediate steps for vertical circulation in between 3. A Service block with Lifts and toilets is provided at every 160 m.

Juxtaposing the Built :

The last module at the river edge side is elevated to create a semi covered public realm along the river edge, which also creates an interest to the users.

The idea was to create a contrasting built to the context.

LINEAR PARK “City as a Being”

The city of Anand is widely known as the ‘Milk-city of India’ and was a prominent landmark in the history as it was the birth place of ‘White Revolution’. The city was also later known as study town as Nationally recognized institutes laid their foundation stone in one of the initial planned Study town ‘VIDHYANAGR’ .

During the study various factors like the density of population, ecology,topography & other economic and residential statistics of the town were profoundly studied.

These Urban pockets were located in city centers and were usually used as illegal garbage dumps or unmaintained greens, and had the highest potential for development depending upon their location on Urban City development.

To address growth and development in such a manner that it becomes resilient and responsive to evolve and cater the all future possibilities, development, demands and requirements.

A linear 12 M wide green corridor to be developed as an urban catalyst. Public spaces which caters residents around the neighbourhood and the commercial sector as well.

The idea was to cater all the age groups as well as residential and commercial activities and there should be transparency between main road and service road.

Commercial Park-let & Food Court

The neighborhood has a temple in the vicinity with tree where many cultural functions are carried. Amphitheater around the tree with open gym, green sit-out spaces and children park.

Since this road is an upcoming hub with major commercial projects a Park-let with small shops with sitting areas is designed in circular shape to create a sense of community within. A supporting Food Court is proposed on similar lines.

To create the dynamic nature materials like colored concrete, paving blocks and greens were used to create interest in the park.

HIGH-RISE APARTMENTS Experience the Luxury

Housing Design Studio Semester VIII FACULTY : Ar. Pratik Patel

The studio aims on developing Luxurious appaments for company executives.

The Bopal region is specifically known for the new developed localities for the employees of the industries like Nirma, Wheel Washing Powder, Tespin etc. Hence a detailed study of the new developed area of Ahemdabad near the S. P. Ring Road. The site is in the locality of Bopal-Ambli road.

The study initiated with studying the activities happening in and around the site. The impact it hold on the surroundings. Since it is an upcoming neighborhood new hospitals, temples, schools and shopping areas are defined in T.P. Schemes and development is strictly based on the guidelines set by th e government.

The site has existing Mango trees on the North side which gave the opportunity to plan the Clubhouse in North-side and the other common activities in the central area under the natural shade caused by trees as well as the towers.

The above quote is quoted by th principal architect of the firm Ar. Prasanna Desai.

The firm believes in the ideology that an architect who is trained to be sensitive person, also needs to e a aware citizen, thus playing much larger role in society and contribute considerably for th betterment of the quantity pf the built environment in the cities.

The firm is people oriented and projects are usually of Urban scale and government oriented.

Architectural Internship Semester VII FIRM : Prasanna Desai Architects

During the internship period, the work was focused on the initial site survey and activity mapping on the street of the Link Road locality.

The tree surveys, public seating, bus stops, parking density, traffic flow and pedestrian flow were closely monitored while drafting the initial concept of the street. Direct communications with local leaders and residents are done. After all the input these observations are closely crafted on the streets.

DIRECTOR’S BUNGALOW Working Drawings

The studio aims on the articulate study of details that has to be produced post designing of the building.

The trapezoidal site is selected for a director’s bungalow. The basic requirements were 5 Bedroom, Living and lounge areas with kitchen and Home office. The Additional requirements were swimming pool, garden and deck area facing to the sea.

For the ease of working the and understanding normal foundation is considered instead of pile foundation.

The living room is double heighten with full glass window opening to the infinity pool and wooden deck. The highlight was the 2 storey high V steel Columns that were used to support the roof as well as created a great elevation feel yo the house.

The house is built in 3 parts where 2 parts are of brick masonry and concrete structure supporting the roof where as the central part of living room is entirely free standing on the Steel columns.

The studio aims on designing of an institute which can enhance the entrepreneurship attitude in youth of India. Institutional Studio Semester V FACULTY : Ar. Advaita Jhalan

The site is located in the hills near Wilson hill which is a popular tourist destination for hiking in Valsad district, Gujarat. The area has small villages of population of about 500-1000 people. There are only 2 schools in the vicinity, and the major children go to the near by town of Dharampur to study the courses that are mentioned.

The topography of the site is highly sloped with about 21 meters raise from road to the rear end from the site.

The are wild trees growing on the site which can be removed.

The highest point has the best views over looking the entire region

TARKESHWAR MAHADEV TEMPLE Women’s Co-operative Centre

The studio aims profound study of the city of temple built in 13th Century opposite Sur-Sagar Lake in Vadodara, India. Sur-Sagar lake was one of the oldest man made lake in history.

Contextual studio Semester IV

FACULTY : Ar. Renuka Okha

The findings and surveys were then used for generating a very precise program dedicated to Women’s Co-operative Centre or ‘Gruh Udhyog’ was crafted .

The temple was built by the ruling dynasty of Gaekwad family for the Princess to teach differently abled children.

The main idea was to create a direct link between the new built of Women’s Co-operative to Tarkeshwar temple which is adjoining to the site. This would help to revive the lapsed activties of the temples.

The study concentrated on built form with the special reference to climate , material, social and cultural and physical environment . Detailed measure drawings and analysis was generated after the study.

The entire temple complex was closely documented and measure drawn on the site. The Elevation and articulated work was photographed, sketched and then drafted to produce high quality drawings to understand the Wada structure of the built its construction techniques.

The idea was to create a spatial design of the designer studio. The interior is inspired from the “Abstraction of houses of French Architecture” as per client requirements.

The basic requirements were to have full functional studio with in house tailoring department, dress up area and display area for about 50 dresses.

Additional garden area for client meetings was required.
