Engine And Transmission: Power To Go Further: India gets two engines – a 1.6-litre 105bhp petrol and a 1.6-litre 105bhp diesel. Both engines come with a 5-speed manual or you can opt for a six-speed auto in the spark ignition engine.

At the centre of the machine lies the revolutionary 1.2L TSI engine. Giving you 105 PS of raw power and 175 Nm of torque.

The Petrol motor makes its peak torque of 15.8kgm at 3800rpm, which means you need to work that gear-lever quite a bit, especially when you want to overtake. It’s a motor that’s happy pootling round town and cruising at triple digit speeds.

But what really outclasses the masses is the first-in-class 7-speed automatic dual-shift gearbox, which ensures a smoother drive as the engine effortlessly switches gears.

The automatic transmission like the manual is rather nice with the Gearshifts are smooth, the ratios seem well chosen and there’s no fuss.

And if diesel is your preferred choice of power, we also have the mighty 1.5L TDI engine with the same 7speed automatic DSG transmission.

The common-rail diesel is the one to go for. With its 25kgm of torque at a low-ish 1500rpm, it’s the one that feels the quickest and the most fun to drive. Once the turbo is fully up and spinning the car feels quite relaxed and can easily maintain cruising speeds on the highway. It’s refined too – sure you can tell it’s a diesel by its gravelly engine note, but it’s a world away from VW’s Pumped Duse engines of old.

More importantly, with a fuel consumption of 18.19 kilometres/litre (TSI) and 22.15 kilometres/litre

(TDI), it gives you maximum power with minimum consumption. Also available in a 1.6L petrol MPI engine.

Safety On Every Difficult Road: Safety has always been an integral aspect at Volkswagen and is central to the New Vento.

The Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) will make sure you’re in firm control on slippery roads or during heavy braking.

All variants of the Vento come with rear air-con vents and a rear centre armrest. But it’s the Highline spec that is well equipped. It comes with a CD player, climate control, electric mirrors, remote locking, alloy wheels, a trip computer, ABS and two airbags but no aux-in port. The base Trendline though priced well, is quite poor on equipment and VW is currently not offering a middle-of-the-road Comfortline variant.

On facing a steep incline, the Hill-hold function will prevent the car from rolling backwards. The anti-pinch technology will stop the windows from closing, on sensing even the slightest obstacle.

Being equipped with dual front airbags as standard, rear parking sensors as well as a reverse parking camera, we make sure safety is an all-round affair.
