Message from our Former President-CEO and Board Chair TO OUR AMAZING SUPPORTERS:

With your help, the fiscal year 2013-2014 was a year of new initiatives and incredible accomplishments. Combined, our health centers and education programs served nearly 60,000 women, men, and teens and our Patient Services department celebrated the launch of a new research division. Meanwhile, our Education and Diversity division launched Safe Start —a new initiative designed to help teens develop healthy relationships and prevent teen dating violence.

In addition, our Public Policy team spent the last few months of the fiscal year preparing for the roll-out of the Affordable Care Act and continued to work diligently to assist women, men, and families throughout the open enrollment period, which ended in March 2014. Of course, we will continue to work hard to convince the Missouri Legislature to pass Medicaid expansion in 2014, giving hundreds of thousands more Missourians the security of health care coverage.

We also saw a tremendous increase in the proportion of our patients with commercial health insurance, from less than five percent to more than 20 percent.

In 2013, Development continued to raise funds for our Campaign for Independence. This $16 million endeavor has helped secure our future by strengthening our endowment, allowing us to invest in much-needed new technology and expansion of professional medical staff in the face of increased competition and a shortage of licensed health care providers. Sincerely,

While continuing to fulfill our core mission to care for everyone in need of our services, 2013 was a year that focused on the future and especially on the challenges we anticipate in the coming years. This focus guided us to undertake several important initiatives. Our Human Resources and Patient Services Departments succeeded in securing the approval of four of our health centers to be part of the National Health Services Corps program, which allows nurse practitioners and doctors who commit to working at one of these sites to be eligible to receive student loan forgiveness. Already, two of our nurse practitioners have collectively received more than $120,000 in federal student loan forgiveness. Programs such as this are crucial to our ability to recruit and retain the most skilled medical staff for our patients, now and into the future.

PUBLIC POLICY & ADVOCACY

WE HELPED HUNDREDS OF MISSOURIANS GET HEALTH INSURANCE. While we continued to fight for Medicaid expansion in Missouri, Planned Parenthood worked on the ground to connect individuals with health insurance. Thanks to a generous grant from Missouri Foundation for Health, in 2014 we hired four Certified Application Counselors to conduct community outreach, education, and one-on-one assistance to individuals buying insurance through the new health insurance Marketplace.

EDUCATION

WE ENGAGED YOUTH IN ADVOCACY. In 2014, 45 diverse students from across St. Louis City and County participated in Planned Parenthood’s Teen Advocates for Sexual Health (TASH). Twice each month during the school year, these teens met to learn and take action on issues that matter to them. They lobbied legislators in Jefferson City, wrote letters to and spoke with school board members, and educated their peers and parents about the need for comprehensive sex education.

WE GREW OUR CAPACITY FOR BETTER CARE. In 2014, Planned Parenthood expanded our Fairview Heights Health Center, doubling space and capacity, and trained three more Nurse Practitioners to provide medication abortion at that location. We also joined the new Planned Parenthood Lab Cooperative, offering us the chance to decrease costs associated with processing lab tests.

WE IMPROVED PATIENT CARE THROUGH RESEARCH AND TRAINING. Research and training are critical to the future of reproductive health care. In 2014, Planned Parenthood participated in two industry-sponsored research projects and continued our training partnerships with Washington University and University of Missouri-St. Louis. We are training the next generation of doctors to provide abortion care and vasectomy, as well as nurses, nurse practitioners and social workers.

WE PROVIDED FREE CARE TO UNINSURED AND HIGH-RISK PATIENTS. In 2014, a grant from Planned Parenthood Federation of America funded our partnership with Siteman Cancer Center, allowing us to provide free follow-up care to patients who need diagnostic mammography and biopsies. A partnership with Washington University Infectious Disease Department allowed us to provide free rapid HIV tests to hundreds of our most at-risk patients.

DEVELOPMENT Each year Planned Parenthood gives away more than $3 million in free health care to our patients with the greatest need. We can only do this because of the generous support of our community, whether through annual giving or through membership in one of our designated giving groups.
