One year. Thousands of meaningful moments. A minute only becomes a moment when we reach out and celebrate it. No matter what was happening in the outside world in 2021, our courageous staff, residents, and families continued to create special moments at PPH. From a spontaneous celebration to a long-planned event, we made every moment count.

LETTER FROM THE CEO

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

PPH

holds a special place in my heart. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you the reason and explain why I am so committed to our organization’s mission.

Dear Friends of PPH,

F

or over 130 years, PPH has provided a safe, vibrant senior living community where residents live with a sense of purpose. As I look back on 2021, I pause to celebrate the many wonderful moments the PPH family experienced and reflect on the many challenges we faced as a community.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, 2021 was an exciting and productive year for PPH. We were happy to move forward with the campus-wide Wi-Fi project, executing lighting enhancements and art installations in several Independent Living buildings. We look forward to completing the project this year. We also added an outdoor bocce court — which was an instant hit! Residents and staff quickly learned the game and competed in several tournaments. Our Webb Pavilion in Personal Care also received a beautiful refurbishment, with the addition of a new lounge area, nurses’ station, and updated flooring, wall coverings, and lighting. Now that 2022 has arrived, we are focused on growth and sustainability. Our master planning kicks into high gear as we look to engage and partner with an architectural firm that will help PPH reimagine several common area spaces, and update and enhance our Personal Care neighborhoods as well as Pathways Skilled Nursing. These projects will serve a dual purpose — to enhance the lives of residents currently living at PPH, and ensure that PPH remains competitive and attractive to future residents. In addition to our master planning and ongoing projects, PPH has partnered with a dining service management company, Morrison Living — a leading senior living and healthcare dining service provider. We are also thrilled to join forces with PS Salon as our new salon services company. These new partnerships will make an immediate impact on our residents, enhancing the services already provided to them. We are excited to continue to deliver a high level of customer service to the residents and families we currently serve while at the same time planning for the future. We are thankful for your ongoing support and generosity. Sincerely,

When I was just a young teen, my grandmother became overwhelmed with dementia. Thanks to the PPH Benevolent Care Fund, my “Mutti” was able to live out her final years with dignity and purpose. My father has been a happy resident for more than 15 years and I have personally witnessed the love, care, and compassion that go into every one of his interactions with the staff. These experiences are just some of the reasons I have made a personal and financial commitment to the ongoing success of PPH. The past two years have been extremely challenging for senior living, and PPH is not an exception. As the pandemic raged on, the staff had to frequently adjust plans to meet the demands of the day. They have been the embodiment of this quote from Margaret Thatcher: “You have to fight a battle more than once to win it.” The pride and commitment demonstrated at PPH every day are a living testimony to the truth that anything can be achieved by a dedicated team. I am excited to be part of the next chapter in PPH history, as we embark on a master plan to update the campus to better serve our current residents and to meet the demands of our future residents. I am proud to be part of such a great organization! Sincerely,

John Dubyk President and CEO

ife at PPH means living every moment to the fullest. The natural beauty of the campus is just the beginning. From bowling alleys and a greenhouse to shuffleboard and our new bocce court, every element of our campus works together to encourage a lifestyle that engages the mind, body, and spirit. Being a part of the PPH family means residents concentrate on enjoying life rather than worrying about the upkeep of a home or future care. On one beautiful campus, with one supportive team, they find everything they need.

Independent Living Spacious apartments give residents the freedom to enjoy life on PPH's beautiful 13-acre campus. Residents have access to the entire campus to enjoy our many amenities, from a swim in the heated pool to a game of shuffleboard or a delicious meal in the dining room. Adults ages 62 or older are able to enjoy the PPH lifestyle while knowing that they have the security of future care in a five-star on-site health center.

Personal Care PPH’s Personal Care neighborhood is conveniently located in the center of campus. Personal Care residents enjoy their own amenities and spaces, such as dining rooms and lounges. For those who are able, access to other areas of the campus is also available. Residents living in one of our Personal Care neighborhoods are able to get additional assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing, medication management, and meals. Our staff is committed to providing assistance while helping residents achieve their maximum independence.

Memory Care Our Chapters program is designed to support residents that suffer from memory impairment. This neighborhood provides an environment where our Memory Care residents can thrive. In addition to specialized care, Chapters provides life enrichment programming that creates a stimulating environment.

Rehabilitation PPH offers a comprehensive therapy program to help residents recuperate from an illness or injury, with the ultimate goal of improving their quality of life. Designed for those who need an individualized therapy program following a hospital stay, our program gets them back to their lives as quickly as possible.

Long-Term Care For those residents who require a long-term stay, Pathways Skilled Nursing provides a high level of care while focusing on dignity and respect for the individual. Spacious rooms, multiple lounges, and dining venues, as well as a beautiful garden, allow PPH to focus on holistic care. As a five-star rated community, Pathways is continually striving for quality improvement.

OUR PRIORITIES

Plan

the moment

Master Planning PPH is committed to providing the highest quality of care to our residents. From five-star rated care in our health center to providing beautiful and comfortable spaces for our residents to gather, PPH prioritizes a holistic approach to resident life. The PPH leadership team continues to diligently work in collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Visionary Committee of the Board, and several consultants, including the financial firm, Baker Tilly, to develop a comprehensive five-year master plan. The master plan details how the physical PPH campus will be modernized to remain competitive in the market and meet the needs of prospective residents while remaining fiscally prudent. Throughout this, PPH continues to prioritize ongoing campus improvements as we shape the future at PPH. The areas of focus within the master plan include Personal Care and Memory Care, Dining, and Skilled Nursing. Potential enhancements include:

Personal Care • Increasing the size of the living suites • Creating more common spaces • Adding showers to all bathrooms

Memory Care • Elevating the level of services • Increasing the number of residences • Adding private bathrooms

Dining • Enhancing and reconfiguring dining spaces and venues • Adding more outdoor dining options

Skilled Nursing • Increasing the number of common areas to provide more opportunities for socializing • Adding therapy locations throughout the building • Creating specialized care and programming

OUR PRIORITIES

Leadership Development Leadership development and succession planning were key pillars identified in the master plan to address the national shortage of long-term care staff as well as identify functional areas that require restructuring and strong leadership. By promoting a culture of lifelong learning and establishing a career pathway that includes specialized training, PPH can offer abundant growth opportunities to current and emerging leaders — a critical component in attracting and retaining top talent.

“To be surrounded by leaders in the industry who have been handpicked to meet collectively to examine in a real, practical, and applicable way leadership goals in the field of senior services has been a positive experience. This training will ultimately have a positive impact on the quality of life, quality of care, and quality of services for those residents whom we have been privileged to serve.” — Daphne Floyd, VP of Human Resources, on her participation in the 2021 Fellows in Leadership program offered through LeadingAge PA. Constructed around the needs of today's providers, Fellows in Leadership equips leaders with actionable strategies and practical knowledge to help solve real-world challenges experienced in the aging services industry.

“The course provided me with a clearer understanding of personal care regulations as they relate to maintaining compliance. The knowledge I gained will help me in the important areas of resident assessments, staff education, and audits.” — Sheleana Perez, Director of Nursing for Personal Care, sharing on her experience attending classes to attain her Personal Care Administrator’s license.

he COVID-19 pandemic has continued to create uncertainties and financial strains. It is no secret that the pandemic has greatly impacted the aging services industry, and PPH is no different.

The pandemic directly impacted our occupancy, and at the end of 2020 our nursing census was at an all-time low. PPH is pleased to report that our nursing census has started to recover, and that we ended the year at 79% occupancy, a 19% increase from the end of 2020.

TOTAL NET ASSETS

Our Personal Care occupancy has also been impacted by COVID-19. We ended the year with a census of 72%, a 4% decline from the end of 2020. Due to many COVID-19 outbreaks, PPH was closed to admissions in our Nursing and Personal Care buildings at various times throughout the year. This decrease in census significantly reduced resident service revenue, which we rely on to maintain a balanced budget. PPH is working to increase census while ensuring we have adequate staffing levels to care for our residents. Our five-year master plan process is underway, which will help us make the necessary changes to assure PPH is meeting the needs of current residents and attracting new ones for years to come. At the end of 2021, PPH made the decision to close one of the floors within our Personal Care building due to low occupancy while also taking advantage of the expense reduction. Having an empty floor will also allow us to be proactive in handling changes that will occur in Personal Care as a result of our master plan. COVID-19 has directly impacted expenses as well as revenue, including the purchasing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), COVID-19 testing, and

salary continuation for employees who are unable to work as a result of contracting the virus. In 2021 alone, PPH spent $150,000 on COVID-19 testing for staff and residents. In summary, PPH’s 2021 financial statements reflect total assets of $60.1 million (including $28.0 million in investments), total liabilities of $26.9 million, and total net assets of $33.2 million. Although 2021 provided many challenges with the continued struggles of the pandemic, PPH ended the year with an operating income of $1.7 million and an increase in net assets of $3.7 million. The positive year-end outcome was a direct result of securing a Payroll Protection Program (PPP) Loan and receiving COVID-19 stimulus funding throughout the year. With little-to-no COVID-19 funding on the horizon, PPH’s prudent financial accountability will continue to be a main priority. We will continue to be proactive in all we do to manage finances, and care for residents and staff, as the future of senior living evolves.

Moments that matter

APPRECIATING OUR PPH FAMILY Longtime Medical Director Retires Longtime PPH medical director, Dr. Patricia Baccash, known to many in the PPH family as Dr. B., retired at the end of July 2021. Prior to her time at PPH, Dr. B. worked as a clinical associate professor at Drexel University, and in emergency medicine at Jeanes Hospital, Crozer-Chester Medical Center, and Hahnemann University Hospital. Dr. B has been with PPH since “sometime in the 1980s.” Her time with us has been critical in providing residents with topquality care and personalized healthcare. Dr. B. is ready for retirement, but she says she will look back fondly on the years she has spent at PPH, the quality of her relationships here, and the wealth of knowledge she has gained.  Dr. Patricia Baccash, PPH’s longtime medical director, retired in July 2021.

“Loving and being loved are more important than anything else. Caring for people and being able to give whatever it is that you can give is the secret to happiness. When you love, that is its own reward.” —Dr. Patricia Baccash

13 • 2021 PPH ANNUAL REPORT

It is no surprise that Dr. B’s contributions have played an immense role in advancing our mission of quality care, consistently receiving 5-star ratings in our skilled nursing center during much of her tenure and fostering a culture of compassion and dignity. After retirement, Dr. B. looks forward to pursuing her love of travel. She has been to all seven continents, with her favorite being Antarctica for its peacefulness and beauty. One more thing that she looks forward to, which has been lost over the course of the pandemic but is making its way back — hugs. “I can’t wait to be able to hug people again,” said with a smile. On behalf of the PPH Board of Directors and the entire PPH family, we thank Dr. Baccash for her years of dedicated service and the impact she’s made on countless lives.

Continued COVID-19 Safety PPH held its first COVID-19 vaccination clinic on-site for all employees and residents on January 6, 2021. The clinic, held in partnership with Omnicare CVS, was the first of several scheduled clinics. Residents were administered the vaccine in their own residences while employees went to the Social Hall. In addition, numerous educational videos and in-person seminars were made available to staff throughout the year to raise awareness of vaccine effectiveness and answer questions or concerns. As of the publication of this report, regulations set forth by the PA Department of Health require that all employees are fully vaccinated, including new hires. This measure, coupled with strong infection prevention standards, has helped our community keep a low to zero positive COVID rate.

 Natalie Ogburn, a Pathways CNA, was the first PPH employee to receive the COVID-19 vaccine on January 6, 2021.

 On February 25, 2021, 196 Independent Living residents took huge steps to “Crush COVID-19” and “Kiss COVID-19 Goodbye” as they received their first or second dose of the vaccine.

National Nurses Week During the month of May, Pathways staff and residents celebrated National Skilled Nursing Care Week and National Nurses Week with plenty of fun and excitement. There were inspirational T-shirts, coffee drinks, a dance party, sidewalk chalk, Reese’s Pieces, and much more! PPH would like to thank our nurses and all of our other skilled nursing care employees for their hard work, dedication, and the love they have shown our residents. Our staff has braved the pandemic over the past year and inclement weather throughout the winter to come into work every day with an optimistic, hopeful outlook and smiles on their faces. We can’t thank them enough for all that they do.

PARTNERS IN CARE PPH volunteers contributed a total of 18,900 hours of their time and talent to support resident programs and services. Volunteer positions included mail and package carriers, friendly visitors, Craft Group members, greenhouse assistants, Gift Shop staff, Tabor Market & Café cashiers, receptionists for the dining room reservation desk, and transporters for the beauty salon. Volunteer hours save PPH a significant amount in expenses while offering a positive outlet for residents and community to remain active and social.

PPH Auxiliary The PPH Auxiliary, founded as the Ladies’ Aid Society in 1889, continues as an essential part of life at PPH. The Auxiliary’s varied initiatives support the PPH mission with a focus on benevolent care and activities in gratitude of PPH residents and staff. Despite limitations imposed by the pandemic during 2021, the 120-plus members of the Auxiliary have worked creatively and put in a yeoman's effort to remain viable and relevant. Through ongoing fundraising activities, including proceeds from PPH “closet” sales, basket and wreath raffles, a mini holiday bazaar, personal donations, and membership dues, over $10,000 in contributions was raised in 2021. The funds were fully used to support the Auxiliary’s purpose, including:

Supplying water ice, decorated tissue boxes, and flowers to brighten the days of Personal Care and Skilled Nursing residents. Purchasing items of need requested by PPH residents and employee departments, such as artwork, clothing, toiletries, and household furniture. Organizing an event with meals for the local fire and police stations in appreciation of their service to our community. Sponsoring the purchase of centerpieces for the recently enhanced Personal Care dining rooms. Purchasing bingo cards and supplies for the Life Enrichment department activities programming.

 PPH Auxiliary members decorated and packed more than 200 boxes of tissues for delivery on Mother’s Day to female residents in Personal Care and Pathways.

O U R I M PA C T At the end of the year, the Auxiliary donated $4,000 to the PPH Benevolent Care Fund, $1,000 to the Employee Appreciation Fund managed by the PPH Residents’ Association, and $200 for staff vaccination incentives. Membership is open to all PPH residents, staff, family members, and members of the greater community. Members meet at 11:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. The meetings are broadcast on PPH TV channel 57 for members unable to attend in person. AWARDS AND RECOGNITION Founders’ Day Due to restrictions from the pandemic, PPH was unable to hold its annual Founders' Day ceremony in person. However, as with many events since March of 2020, PPH brought Founders' Day to residents' living rooms through a virtual event that aired on PPH TV live and throughout the month of December. Founders' Day honors the vision of a group of German ministers, who, in collaboration with members of the community, set forth to accomplish something they all strongly believed in. This effort was the founding of PPH as we know it today and the cause they believed in so strongly is what we now know as the PPH mission, with Benevolent Care at its heart.

 Residents Eleanore Schmid (left) and Ruth Beaucheane (right) celebrated their 100th birthdays in May.

Each year during Founders' Day, PPH recognizes members of the community for their special achievements and contributions to the community. We honor PPH centenarians, residents who have lived at PPH for 20 or more years, a volunteer whose gift of time, talent and treasure has significantly impacted PPH, and a resident from each level of care who exemplifies the values and dedication created by our founders and sustained by the entire PPH family. We also recognize one PPH employee for quality care and excellent service with our organization’s highest distinction — the PPH President’s Award.

This year, members of the PPH Heritage Society were recognized for their philanthropy, and members who made their first planned gift in 2020 and 2021 were formally inducted into the Society.

PATHWAYS

“It was such a surprise. It’s a great gift to be recognized.” — Sr. Mary Ann Tregoning

Kenneth Venuti Ken Venuti was named Pathways Resident of the Year. Ken regularly exercises in the PPH Wellness Center and pool, performs at veterans’ events and memorial services, and often joins the PPH choir. During the earlier stages of the pandemic, he was no longer able to access the entire campus as he once had. Instead, he looked for opportunities to share his gifts with his fellow residents. Ken's positive attitude was greatly appreciated by both residents and staff.

EMCCC Honors Two Members of the PPH Family Two members of the PPH family, W. Russ Koerwer and the late Marge Jacoby, were honored at the 2021 Eastern Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce (EMCCC) Annual Community Awards Celebration in June.

W. Russell Koerwer, a member of the PPH Board of Directors and a longtime supporter of PPH, received the EMCCC Lifetime Achievement Award for his years of volunteer service in the Greater Philadelphia area. Russ has been a member of EMCCC since 1990, and has served on the EMCCC and PPH Boards of Directors for several years. He was president of the EMCCC for two years. In addition, Russ is a member of the Abington Police Athletic League Board of Directors and has been a member of Kiwanis International for over 50 years. The late Marge Jacoby, a member of EMCCC for nearly 20 years, received the EMCCC Humanitarian Award. Marge was a schoolteacher in Philadelphia and Chicago prior to becoming a full-time mother to her two children, Lauren and Edward. Marge eventually returned to the workforce, working many jobs with various responsibilities, and was always involved in elder care and senior advocacy. After retiring in 2016, Marge began a part-time position as community liaison for PPH in 2017. Marge’s smile and friendly demeanor brought happiness to everyone she encountered. She was upbeat, optimistic, and a joy to be around. Marge will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with her. Marge’s daughter, Lauren, accepted the Humanitarian Award on her behalf. The award will now be called the Marjorie Jacoby Humanitarian Award in honor of Marge’s dedication to EMCCC. 23 • 2021 PPH ANNUAL REPORT

The Eberhard and Helen Schea Endowment for Healthcare Education The Eberhard and Helen Schea Endowment Fund for Healthcare Education is an important aspect of our mission — and it has an impact both now and, in the future, as we build up tomorrow’s caregivers and healthcare leaders. In 2007, Caroline Schea Lloyd and her brother Frederick Schea established the endowment to honor the legacy of their parents, Eberhard and Helen Schea, while also supporting continuing healthcare education opportunities that promote the well-being of PPH employees and residents. Eberhard and Helen Schea were longtime PPH donors and residents. Eberhard also served as a PPH Board Trustee, and both “Ebbie” and Helen were active volunteers with the PPH Auxiliary.  Eberhard and Helen Schea

In November 2021, the PPH family lost a dear friend and longtime supporter with the passing of Caroline Schea Lloyd. Since 2016, Caroline’s contributions to the Schea Endowment Fund enabled 18 employees with more than $12,000 in scholarships for higher education costs. Prior to 2016, the Schea and Lloyd families’ contributions to the Schea Endowment Fund also helped foster the implementation of today’s PPH Wisdom in Senior Education (WiSE) classes as well as training courses available online to PPH staff. Today, the endowment serves as a tribute not only to Eberhard and Helen Schea, but also as a reminder of Caroline's loving-kindness.  Caroline Schea Lloyd

Guardian Angel Honorary Gifts You can recognize a PPH caregiver or other staff member who made an impact on your life or the life of a loved one by sharing your story and making a donation of $250 or more to PPH in their honor. Gifts received through the Guardian Angel Program pay tribute to an employee who enriched your life while also helping PPH provide essential resources, so others receive the highest-quality, most compassionate care as well.

"Carrie has the courage, willingness, and fortitude to rise to the task of meeting the needs of individuals she serves every day. But most of all, we appreciate her glorious, unwavering sense of humor," said the Catlaw family on why they honored Carrie as a PPH Guardian Angel.  Carrie, with resident Viola DeFrancisco

OUR DONORS

PLANNED GIVING Planned Giving, also called Legacy Giving, is a way to make a gift to PPH through thoughtful estate planning. A planned gift as part of an overall estate plan takes your needs as well as the needs of your loved ones into consideration, while helping support the PPH mission.

COMMON TYPES OF PLANNED GIFTS AT PPH A Gift Through Your Will Gifts established in your will can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. A bequest allows you to retain control of your assets during your lifetime, while also making a gift to PPH.

Charitable Gift Annuities Our charitable gift annuity program, administered through the United Church Funds, was created as a service to our many friends who have expressed a desire to make a gift of significance, while still retaining income from the gift property during their lives. A charitable gift annuity is a contract in which you exchange a gift of cash or securities for a guaranteed, fixed income each year for the rest of your life! It is truly a win-win situation for the donor and PPH.

35 • 2021 PPH ANNUAL REPORT

By adding PPH to your estate plan through a variety of flexible, tax-advantaged options, you can continue to benefit from your assets now, knowing that your legacy gift will provide quality care and peace of mind security to residents and their loved ones for generations to come.

Life Insurance Do you have a life insurance policy you no longer need? Perhaps your other assets have grown to provide the protection you require, and the insurance policy lies forgotten in a safety deposit box. Did you know that the policy could make a wonderful charitable gift to PPH. If you have insurance you might like to contribute, or if you are currently paying premiums on a policy and want to discover how this policy might work as a gift, you can name PPH the beneficiary of your life insurance, or a co-beneficiary.

Retirement Plan or IRA A retirement plan or IRA is typically the largest source of assets that generate taxable income when paid to a beneficiary. Therefore, if you are considering a gift to us after your lifetime, it is usually better to leave taxable assets to us and give non-taxable assets (such as stocks and real estate) to your loved ones.

OUR DONORS

PPH Garden Party in Appreciation of Sponsors and Donors The PPH Garden Party was held on Sept. 23, 2021, in appreciation of sponsors and donors who contributed $1,000 or more during the 2020 calendar year. Contributions supported the campus-wide Wi-Fi project, Benevolent Care, and other areas of need associated with pandemic relief efforts. The event was slated to be held outdoors in the PPH Arts, Culture, and Education (ACE) Center Courtyard and surrounding gardens, but due to inclement weather, was moved inside to the adjacent private dining room, Bistro and Fountain Room. During the reception, guests enjoyed butlered hors d’oeuvres, pasta and crudité stations, an open bar, and an assortment of desserts. Top-quality display screens and audio were located throughout the spaces to allow guests in any area to comfortably see and hear the evening’s speaker program and awards ceremony.

The program included brief remarks from John Dubyk, PPH President and CEO, who spoke about our community’s appreciation for, and the value of, the contributions of our generous supporters. John’s remarks were followed by the awards ceremony. The awards included the PPH Donor Appreciation Award, which honors a donor who embodies a culture of benevolence, and the PPH Community Leadership and Service Award, which honors a partner in our community who shares our values and whose leadership serves the needs of others. The premier of “Family Means…,” a video testimonial that highlighted the connections between residents and employees and their links to the time-honored mission of PPH, culminated the successful and enjoyable event.
