In fiscal year 2018 (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018), Planned Parenthood Great Plains provided health care to more than 28,000 patients at our 11 health centers throughout Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.

We offer high-quality sexual and reproductive health care, provide education that promotes informed and authentic sexuality, and drive culture change that ensures patient confidence in sexual and reproductive health decision-making.

Our Shared Mission Since joining Planned Parenthood Great Plains in February 2018, I’ve had the pleasure of spending time at our 11 health centers and in communities across Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The compassion, kindness, and dedication of the Planned Parenthood Great Plains family make it easy to see why — for 85 years and counting — we’ve been a trusted provider of sexual and reproductive health care for communities across our region.

It’s an honor to lead this organization at such a pivotal moment in our history. In the face of increasing political and financial pressures, we’re working to protect our patients’ rights not just in the health centers, but in our communities, courtrooms, and statehouses.

In 2018, we celebrated a significant expansion of transgender health services, including hiring Dr. Janet Cathey as our director of transgender care. Over 30% of transgender Americans lack access to health care, and in our region, the challenges are even greater. Our goal is to treat every person who comes through our doors with compassion, dignity, and respect while getting them the care they need.

Also in 2018, we invited patients into our new, state-of-theart health center in Oklahoma City, which we renovated through the generous support of donors like you. The remodel made it possible for us to offer comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care, including STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings, birth control, and — for the first time in Oklahoma City — abortion. We are proud to continue to meet the needs of our patients across the states we serve.

In spite of the political, legal, and financial challenges we face — or perhaps because of them — our devoted staff, volunteers, donors, and more than 275,000 supporters stand united by a belief that all people deserve the ability and resources to make their own health care decisions with dignity. Together, we are helping create healthy and inclusive communities, and our work is more important than ever.

Our Story of Care Patients of all ages and genders come to Planned Parenthood Great Plains for their sexual and reproductive health care needs because they know they will receive the expert, compassionate care they deserve at our health centers. We are proud to offer a range of health services to meet the needs of our patients, including family planning, primary and pediatric care, safe and legal abortion, transgender care, menopausal care, STI testing, HIV prevention and treatment, and more.

Expanding Care in Oklahoma City With support from our generous donors, Planned Parenthood Great Plains re-opened the Oklahoma City health center following the completion of a $3.2 million renovation in May 2018. The state-of-the-art health center meets 21st-century standards and supports a full range of sexual and reproductive health services, as well as the introduction of primary and pediatric care. The facility has 6,500 ft 2 of clinical space and 4,500 ft 2 of administrative space. This renovated health center improves safety standards, elevates the patient experience, and helps us serve more patients.

Reaching Our Community We believe that every person deserves access to the resources and information they need in order to make decisions about their own health. Our expert health educators reached 5,495 individuals across our region in 2017-18, providing comprehensive, sex-positive, medically accurate, and developmentally appropriate information to participants from early childhood to adulthood. Educational presentations are often a part of six-week workshops with weekly, 60-minute presentations.

Comprehensive Education Our educators visit schools, libraries, businesses, events, non-profits, and community agencies to provide information on an array of ever-changing topics, including: How to talk about sex and sexuality: Parents and youth-serving professionals learn how to have conversations with young people that empower selfexpression, as well as normalize talking about sexual health.

Gender and gender identity: This program provides participants with an opportunity to explore and celebrate their identity while learning about the difference between assigned sex, gender identity, and gender expression, as well as correct pronoun use.

Consent and healthy communication: Participants learn about consent and how to have healthy conversations with their partners about sex. Students practice having conversations with their partner so that boundaries are clear and the dialogue in their relationship is open.

Sex in the digital age: 14- to 18-year-olds learn about how to safely use the internet, social media platforms, and texting when in relationships. Students also learn about the legal risks involved in sexting and explore safer ways to show a partner affection.

Volunteer with Us Our dedicated volunteers generously give their knowledge, skills, and leadership to support our mission and act as community ambassadors on our behalf.

I find being a clinic escort enormously satisfying. You get to literally “stand with Planned Parenthood� and with the women and their families who we serve. Our bright pink vests let our clients know that they are not alone in facing the harassment of the anti-choice demonstrators. The ongoing struggle for reproductive health care is played out every day in our parking lot.

Changing the Narrative Through our advocacy arm, Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes, we advocate for the right of patients in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma to access the essential services that Planned Parenthood Great Plains provides. We lobby state lawmakers to protect and expand access to sexual and reproductive health care and comprehensive sex education in the communities they represent, and we galvanize grassroots supporters, helping them make their voices heard in capitol buildings and communities across the region.

A Letter from the Board Chair It has been my honor and privilege to serve as Planned Parenthood Great Plains’ board chair during this period of transition.

We welcomed our new CEO, Brandon Hill, on February 1, 2018, and he hit the ground running.

He has visited all of our health centers in our four-state affiliate and has developed relationships with donors and community members. We were proud to open a new health center in Oklahoma City and to break ground for a new facility in Tulsa. Our patients deserve state-of-the-art health centers, and we will continue to update our facilities as opportunities arise. I want to personally thank all of the donors who have made these improvements possible for our patients.

Last year has also presented some challenges, specifically with the ever-more restrictive abortion legislation, which drastically impacts our ability to serve our patients. With your support, Planned Parenthood Great Plains can continue to work to preserve access to our communities and allow patients to receive the most comprehensive, high-quality health services and sex-positive education.

Our work cannot be done without your support.

As we continue to face challenges at both the local and national levels, support from individual donors and foundations is more important than ever.
