Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast Impact Report July 2021-June 2022

in this TOGETHER

Fighting for reproductive rights has never been an easy task. As someone who has worked for Planned Parenthood for 35 years, I have seen some high highs and some low lows. But over the past year, I have felt anger and disappointment on an entirely new level. Although we knew that the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was not only possible, but likely, I was not prepared for the grief that flooded over me in that moment. In the days and months after, we were all coming to the same bleak realization.

With the stroke of a pen, millions of people lost the right to make their own decisions about their health care, their lives, and their bodies.

But as the news and impact of this decision truly began to sink in, that grief was replaced with an inextinguishable fire and unwavering commitment to fight for as long as it takes to restore and protect our rights. As we have done for decades, we are answering the call; providing expert, compassionate health care and information for everyone who needs us. With the support of people like you, I am more determined than ever to fight for the future we want and deserve.

Thanks to your constant support our doors are open and we continue to provide the care our communities depend on. Planned Parenthood is here to stay, no matter what.

together, we are FIGHTING FOR ABORTION ACCESS

When Texas passed SB 8, an almost total abortion ban, in September 2021, we began helping patients get out-of-state to access abortion. Since the Supreme Court’s decision was released in June 2022, we have seen the demand for our Patient Navigation surge—more than doubling the monthly average from before the decision.

Because of Texas’s SB 8, I was forced to travel 231 miles round-trip to Louisiana last year when I needed an abortion. I don’t think I would have survived if I was forced to carry that pregnancy to term, but forced pregnancy and forced birth are exactly what thousands of Texans have been subjected to over the past year – and it’s the potential fate of millions of people across the country...since the fall of Roe.

The fact is, people who need abortions have to travel farther, jump through more hoops, and spend more money just to get the essential care they need and deserve. Our doors are still open as we are still here to help our patients get the care they need, no matter the state they live in.

4 PLANNED PARENTHOOD GULF COAST

With reproductive rights under attack and little to no sexual health education provided to young people in schools, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast remains a trusted source of accurate and inclusive information.

Through our education programs, we strive to empower young people to take control of their own bodies, promote healthy relationships, and offer a judgement-free zone for questions and concerns.

together, we are EDUCATING

Education is an important piece of health care, because there is so much misinformation out there, and teenREACH has given me the tools I need to not only help myself, but to empower my community to make healthy and informed decisions for themselves.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

• Provided 6,605 hours of education programing to over 2,000 people

• Developed our FLASH (Families Learning About Sexual Health) series to provide resources for parents to communicate with their children about their sexual health

• Celebrated 20 years of the Promotoras de salud Program at PPGC, providing bilingual health education workshops & trainings in English & Spanish

• Formed 6 new partnerships with organizations to allow us to expand and improve our services and reach new audiences

• Received 800+ responses for our LGBTQIA Teen Survey to ensure that our education programming is meeting the needs of the young folks in our community

together, we are BUILDING A MOVEMENT

Times are tough, but so are we. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast is here to stay and together with our community, partners, and donors we are building a movement to win long-term access to sexual and reproductive freedom.

THANKS TO OUR OUTSTANDING SUPPORTERS, THIS PAST YEAR WE HAD:

• Pro bono legal assistance valued at $481,632.67

• 1,140 hours of volunteer service

• Record-breaking fundraising: $10.5 million

As we build a movement fit for the future we seek, we have renamed our Annual Roe v. Wade Luncheon to meet the moment. On March 3, 2023, we will be celebrating our first annual versus Luncheon. Visit ppgulfcoast.org/versus to learn more about the new name and to save your seat!

together, we are HERE TO STAY

We have been getting a lot of questions about what will happen to Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast now that abortion is banned. And our answer is simple: The fate of Roe is not the future of Planned Parenthood. Our doors are open and we remain steadfast in our mission to deliver care no matter what.

Despite immense barriers, PPGC continues to be a trusted source for affordable health care and medically-accurate health information for all people and a respected leader in educating the community about reproductive and sexual health.

We are outraged by the current laws, but we are not backing down. We know that the patients and the communities we serve need us more than ever. Together, we are here to stay.

In March 2022, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast received an incredible gift of $17 million from Mackenzie Scott. This investment will help us be as strong as we can be to ensure that we continue to provide the equitable, expert, and compassionate health care that patients expect in our health centers.

We know we must work as hard as ever to ensure equitable access to sexual and reproductive health care and education, especially abortion care. We are excited about the opportunities this investment will provide in expanding access to health care and advancing health equity in Texas and Louisiana.

Our three-year Strategic Plan for FY23-FY25: Our plan envisions how we will continue advancing our mission, delivering on our brand promise, and addressing the critical health care needs across our service area.

Fighting for the future our community deserves: Our purpose is to deliver Care, No Matter What. Despite cruel restrictions on sexual and reproductive health in Texas and Louisiana, we are finding new ways to ensure that our patients and our community are cared for by pivoting our care and continuing to fight for the rights of all people.
