At UOL, for instance, the integrated modular system adopted at the University College of Medicine and Dentistry and Faculty of Allied Health Sciences expose learners to clinical attachment at an early stage. Several industrial trips are executed by departments such as Electrical Engineering, Pharmacy, CS & IT, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Systems, Civil Engineering, Architecture etc. for mainly undergraduate students. These educational trips are vital in bridging the widening gap between theoretical learning and practical exposure, availing opportunities to the students to interact with industry experts, boost their confidence, and help them to choose their specializations. All departments ought to embrace such educative trips.
The University curricula also mandate learners to go for internships, clerkship and clinical attachments. Through these modes of learning, the students get hands-on training, identify gaps in their development for which they struggle to bridge along the way and establish linkages with the industry that ordinarily lead to permanent jobs. Hundreds of co-curricular activities are also executed annually through more than 50+ clubs and societies. Through these platforms manned by OSA, young talents are discovered and sharpened, leadership, organizational and managerial skills are nurtured, and many hierarchy members get connected to the industry. The Young Leaders Program (YLP) which will be re-launched on June 22, 2022 is another platform presumed to address the industry demands.
Furthermore, UOL has maintained its overall standing and ranked among top 401-600 universities globally. It is pertinent to mention that the University score has significantly

The SDG 2 in which UOL made exceptional performance, measures universities’ research on hunger, their teaching on food sustainability, and commitment to tackle food waste and address hunger on campus and locally. This remarkable effort places UOL at the forefront of finding solutions to one of Pakistan’s critical challenges— hunger.

The UOL emerged among the best 100-200 universities globally, top 3 nationally and top 2 among private sector universities of Pakistan on the SDG 13– ‘Climate Action’ which assesses universities’ research on climate change, their use of energy and their preparations for dealing with the consequences of climate change. According to the United Nations Development Program(UNDP), Pakistan has been facing challenges such as severe water stress, food insecurity due to decreasing agricultural and livestock production, more prevalent pests and weeds, degradation of ecosystems, biodiversity loss, and northward shifting of some biomes.

This year, The University of Lahore participated in 9 SDGs including SDG 3- Good Health & Well Being, SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and the mandatory SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals. The University has the vision to keep expanding the scope and ultimately participate in all seventeen SDGs.

The Spectacle is a monthly Newsletter project published by the University of Lahore under the patronage of the Office of the Chairman, BOG. Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using a comprehensive and balanced comparison across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching. In the 2022 Impact Rankings that covered 1,406 universities from 106 countries/regions inclusive of the 63 universities from Pakistan, The University of Lahore (UOL) registered yet another record by emerging 65th globally and 1st across Pakistan on SDG 2 of ‘Zero Hunger’.
improved eight steps upwards as compared to the performance of THE Impact Rankings 2021. The total number of universities that participated in this year’s Rankings has also increased from 1,117 to 1,406. Being the largest private sector university of Pakistan, UOL is among the leading private sector universities of Pakistan offering the subjects of Accounting & Finance, Architecture, Art, Performing Arts & Design, Biological Sciences, Business & Management, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Communication & Media Studies, Computer Science, Economics & Econometrics, Education, Electrical & Electronic Engineering,

Another significant achievement is registered on the SDG 12 – ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’ where the University has taken a big leap and moved to a higher scale of 101 – 200 from 201-300 internationally and ranked among top 4 nationally and 1st in private universities of Pakistan. The methodology of this SDG measures universities’ research on responsible consumption and their approach to the sustainable use of resources.

On the SDG 6— ‘Clean Water and Sanitation’ that considers universities’ research related to water, their water usage and their commitment to ensuring good water management in the wider community, UOL has also pulled off prominent positions nationally and internationally. It was ranked among the best 150 universities globally, top 2 nationally, and 1st in private sector universities of Pakistan. The results of this SDG come at a time when 70 per cent of households still drink bacterially contaminated water in Pakistan (UNICEF).

To crown it all, on top of the core and traditional classroom learning, all the academic and nonacademic departments of the universities and colleges ought to embrace the holistic student development programs that can raise highly employable graduates. Practical learning sessions or platforms, soft skills, and comprehensive assessment strategies should be emphasized from time to time in the development and revision of curriculums.

job market trends at the global level demand that educational institutions produce graduates who are holistically nurtured. The desired graduates must have, among other qualities, multi-skilled, exposed to real working environments, loaded with a practical perspective, well aware of the new technologies that are being applied in the industry with the latest trends, empowered with interpersonal and communication skills and teamwork abilities, confident, and with capabilities to lead others.
The said set of skills is usually put forward by HR Managers of reputable organizations during their recruitment exercises. The industry personnel are also using the same skills while accusing academic institutions of failure to produce competitive graduates. In a bid to address such claims, academic institutions mainly universities and colleges, are endeavoring to initiate programs aimed at addressing such claims and to fixing the industry-academia cracks. Beyond classroom learning, several universities are subjecting their students to practical sessions, internships, clinical attachments, industrial visits, leadership training programs, and many other extracurricular activities executed through clubs and societies.

The University has endeavored to improve learning outcomes, promote a culture of research, and, most importantly, bridge the gap between policymaking and academia. To achieve all this, the University has established linkages and partnerships with national, regional, and global partners, simply because it believes that knowledge has no boundaries and frontiers. In line with its commitment to providing intellectual impetus to policymakers, the University, under the visionary leadership of Mr. Awais Raoof (Chairman, BoG), felt that Pak-Turk relations could be improved by establishing academic linkages between the two

The second conference titled ‘‘Transnationalism Vs. Statism: Generating and Consuming Security” was held on May 11, 2022. Scholars from Turkey and Pakistan discussed wide-ranging issues and phenomena that are posing a plethora of challenges to states, including Pakistan and Turkey. They argued that ultra-nationalism, a return of great power politics, the rise of non-state actors, and the proliferation of emerging technologies are not only revising regional and global orders but also pressuring states. All this, delegates from both sides stressed, are increasing the prospect of instability and reducing that of stability. They agreed, however, that growing transnational threats merit all-gamut cooperation between states like Pakistan and Turkey, who have what it takes to lead their respective sides of the region.
These MoUs allowed for UOL and its partners to organize joint conferences, conduct research, and facilitate exchange programs on a host of security, strategic, and foreign policy issues that Turkey and Pakistan face.
Wrapping up the Dialogue, UOL and BAU hosted a two-day conference titled “Turkish and Pakistani Perspectives on Regional and Global Security” on May 12-13, 2022. Participants from Turkey and Pakistan, for two days, looked at how their countries affect and are affected by geopolitical and geo-economics events in the region and beyond. They discussed the impacts of the Russo-Ukraine war, U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the war of ascendancy between Washington and Beijing on their countries’ security and stability. While they underscored the importance of initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), they were cognizant of the compendium of subversive elements that could impede them. In that, economic predicaments on the behest of international financial institutions, climate change, terrorism, and technology-driven arms racing and strategic partnerships featured prominently.

On the other hand, the Chaoon Foundation is a non-profit organization that strives to combat climate change, promote plantations and spread awareness regarding the significance of plantations. It is working with the intent to make Pakistan green and healthier. Being a responsible organization, the Foundation plans to create urban forestation and collaborate with several stakeholders in the fight against global warming.
As per the agreement, both parties are working together for the revitalization of the Rakh Jhok Forest in the jurisdiction of the RUDA. They also agreed on a plantation drive for a period of one year in which UOL shall provide seedlings for the plantation drive whereas the Parks & Horticulture Authority (PHA), Lahore and RUDA shall be responsible for the maintenance and raising of the saplings.
Chaoon Nursery, being the largest plantation nursery facility, aims to contribute to the purification of air, climate change, and preservation of soil through plantations all over the country. We grow plants organically and donate them free of cost. To save our motherland, we are taking the necessary steps.
Chaoon Foundation was established, with the vision, to create a green tomorrow and make accessible plants for everyone and anyone. Keeping climate change and my passion for plants under consideration, Chaoon Nursery was founded where every plant is grown with care and donated free of cost. that it is imperative for young officers to not only think as tacticians but also as strategists. This, she stressed, is critical because tactical actions now go on to have strategic effects. Further, she said that, with set-piece battles becoming rather obsolete and disruptive technologies coming to the fore, officers have to be trained in managing complex battlefield environments. She argued that junior commanders will have to take real-time decisions, motivate their men to perform sophisticated battlefield maneuvers, and commit to fighting in
She said, “As future commanders of big formations, young officers have to have a scholarly flair, primarily because going forward they will have to deal with data, fake and genuine alike. Also, scholarly contributions from officers and combatants would help Pakistan produce original knowledge on these all-important issues”.
Dr. Ghouse during his talk
Dr. Yasin also presented two more papers, titled “Wavelet Coherence Approaches, Revisiting the Role of Financial Development and Trade Openness: Further Evidence from 65 Developed Countries” and “Does agriculture, forests, and energy consumption foster the carbon emission and ecological footprint? Fresh Evidence from BRICS”. His study embraced the rising concerns about the earnestness of issues like climate change and the importance of research into the social and behavioral aspects of environmental issues more than ever before. The above three research papers will aid academics and policymakers in their efforts to mitigate anthropogenic climate change. The audience showed their involvement zealously and, in the end, there was a productive questionanswer session.

He exclaimed that it was a matter of great pleasure to teach students at the college level because many students at that level are not given acquaintance with the software used in Economics, which is an important aspect of modern university education. He also introduced students to the data analysis courses being offered at UOL and the latest curricula designed by the Department of Economics.

simply because attribution would be difficult. Therefore, she stressed the need for young officers to conduct research on the implications of emerging technologies on the nature and conduct of war at all levels up to the strategic one.

Dr. Akhtar during her address Participants during the session
Dr. Akthar ended her talk by surveying some of the gravest challenges to strategic stability on the Subcontinent, arguing that, in order to meet them, Pakistan must focus on making strategic investments in improving its economy. She said only a strong economy could guarantee a robust defence of the country.
