Welcome to the polytec trendjournal, showcasing joinery and design trends in Australia.

For well over a decade, Australia has developed its own sense of design style and aesthetic, and while there are still some influences from other countries and cultures around the world, these are merely an essence as opposed to a duplicate.

Trends are constantly evolving and over time we take what is practical and beautiful and improve on functionality and longevity. My first trendjournal in 2008 highlighted the introduction of electronics and technology into kitchens and joinery with global influences. This was in high contrast to the decorative era of the 1990s when kitchens predominately echoed fashion trends. This shift over the decades has helped us to enjoy full integration and functionality into our spaces, allowing us to be more efficient with time and energy.

Moving forward, our focus is now an emotional connection to nature in terms of colour, form and texture that brings a sense of calm. We are also looking toward nostalgic design details from past eras that make our rooms uniquely personal. Another large influence on the future of joinery and design trends is the conscious consideration for sustainability. This is not only in manufacturing practices, ensuring less waste and impact on the environment, but to ensure the design of our spaces and joinery are not only appealing and practical but have inherent longevity, with a quality and style that withstands the test of time.

As with many of the kitchen trends of today, the island bench is central to the home, commanding space and attention to allow for the many activities of cooking and everyday life. The clean and simple colour palettes of either white and oak, or layered neutral tones, depict a classic yet modern style that represents the perfect example of class and quality.

Exercising the art of restraint, the simple fusion trend adopts one or two key features that give a hint of a global influence. It boasts the strong horizontal lines of Japanese styling, as well as the black, white and warm timber palette of northern Europe, marrying the styles into a japandi feel. At times it also hints at the relaxed simplicity of a modern Mediterranean farmhouse. Joinery is beautifully and cleverly detailed to look like furniture.

The most relaxed of all the trends, the naturist style, celebrates a botanical-influenced palette or modern coastal vibes.

The soothing nature of green shades combined with timber and stone, or the fresh coastal whites with soft oak and wicker features can both capture the essence of relaxed Australian living from country to coast.

Bolder use of colour and sweeping forms, featuring heavily profiled doors and detailing, creates a nostalgic feel of a warm embrace for this trend.

Adopting familiar elements from periods such as art deco or midcentury, through to traditional with a touch of the infamous Hamptons, all are enveloped with a modern umbrella of softness and liveability.

Typically, with seamless integration and at times, symmetrical, it also draws its strength and confidence from the bold use of black or simply one timber colour throughout.
