Policy change could allow children of all non-resident staff members to attend school in county By Emily Darrell Staff Writer

If Powhatan County teachers and school admini strators who live outside of the county can enroll their children in Powhatan schools, why can’t other full-time PCPS employees – such as janitors and mechanics – do the same? This topic came up at last week’s school board meeting, though it was not voted on, as some board members wanted more time to think about the impact – particularly financial – the potential added students could have on county schools. Currently, Powhatan teachers and administrators who live in other counties are permitted to enroll their children in Powhatan schools on a tuition-basis. However, as some board members pointed out, this tuition -- $750 per year, per child – does not come close to covering the cost of the student. The theory, however, is that having his or her own children nearby can help increase a teacher’s job satisfaction and productivity. “We have retained some excellent employees because we do this,” said Superintendent Margaret Meara. District 1 board member Rick Cole had serious reservations about expanding the program. “Money is tight,” Cole said, adding that he’d only feel comfortable voting on the issue after he’d seen some hard numbers on what percentage of cost the county

Cassie Mazza’s family, including her husband John, left, daughter Natalie and son Derek, say her bravery as she faced ALS has inspired them to help find a cure.

On Oct. 27, Natalie Cosgrove will join hundreds of thousands across the country for the 2012 Walk to Defeat ALS. The walk begins at 11 a.m. on Brown’s Island and is intended to spread awareness of the devastating effects of ALS. For more information visit www.alsa.org.

ohn Mazza’s story does not have a happy ending. And he wants you to know that up front. When ALS claimed his wife, Cassie, last June after a courageous three-year battle with the disease, it marked the end of a brutal, heartbreaking journey that John, four months after her death, still struggles to make sense of. When people say – trying to offer comfort – that the loss of his wife was part of a larger, possibly divine plan, John can only shake his head. No, he tells them. It was not. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, strikes an estimated 5,600 Americans every year, usually between the

ages of 40 and 70. As it so often does, ALS – a fatal motor neuron disease for which there is no known cure – has changed the Mazza family in ways that even they could not have predicted, rearranging their lives and challenging their faith. Just as he has, John’s children, Natalie, 24, and Derek, 20, have struggled to grasp their new reality.

“It’s shaken me,” said Natalie, who had to come to grips with the fact, once her mother was gone, that she no longer needed to have her cell phone within an arm’s reach at all times. For Derek, who still lives at home, the anger about what had happened was compounded by the sudden unbearable silence of the house, a constant reminder

A piece of Powhatan’s natural history is about to hit the auction block. That’s right: the flat rock, from which Flat Rock gets its name, will be auctioned off later this month along with the property at 2603 Anderson Highway, on which Dirty Hands Garden Center currently sits. Claudia Swanson, the owner of Dirty Hands, says that she’s ready to make a career change and is no longer interested in running the garden center . In fact, she’s had the property for sale for three years, but with no takers, and hopes that the “vibe and excitement an auction can generate” will help to finally make the sale. County Woman’s Club marks 40 years By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Very few women could say they have logged more miles in an attempt to become a Woman’s Club member than Liz Sabbatini. Sabbatini first heard about the organization through an American friend (Sabbatini is British) while living in Africa. “I was so impressed with them because they seemed so active,” she recalled. When she moved to Rome a short time later, she tried to join the club but couldn’t because she was not an American. Finally, after she and her husband had moved to Switzerland, Sabatini found a spot in a local club there. Immediately, she says, she realized

Bob Livermon, on why he was such a fan of Mighty Mouse as a child. See story below.

Of mouse and man Powhatan resident pens tribute to cartoon hero By Emily Darrell Staff Writer

In October of 1942 the world was in quite a state: the Battle of Stalingrad was raging, the U.S. and Japan were fighting heavily in the Pacific, and the list countries at war had grown to include Brazil, Thailand, and Panama. But in an alternate cartoon universe, in a quaint little village called Mouseville, a creature eventually to be known as Mighty Mouse managed to single-pawedly free his town’s mice population from the clutches of the town’s evil cats by escaping to a Super Market, bathing in Super Soap, dining on Super Soup, Super Celery, and Super Cheese, and transforming into a superhero. Longtime Powhatan resident Bob Livermon has always felt a kinship with Mighty Mouse. Livermon says that while growing up in the Southwest Virginia town of Martinsville he was always small for his age. But small, as he learned from his cartoon hero, didn’t have to mean weak. “I was the smallest one in my neighborhood,” Livermon says, “but I was pretty strong for my size. I could not stand bullies, and if someone was picking on someone else, I’d step in and stop it.” “Of course,” he adds, “Mighty Mouse always got the heroine, and I wasn’t that good with girls.

Author Bob Livermon, with some of his Mighty Mouse memorabilia.

Last October, Livermon’s older brother died – on Livermon’s 69th birthday – followed by his mother just two months later. Livermon said these losses set him to reminiscing. And one of the things he and his friends waxed nostalgic about was cartoons. Livermon recalled frequenting Martinsville’s three movie theaters as a boy and, for 15 cents, enjoying not only a film, but a sequence of cartoons before it. His favorite, he says, was always Mighty Mouse. Last year, after the deaths of his mother and brother, Livermon began doing some research on the character, and learned that

he and Mighty Mouse very nearly shared the same birthday – while Livermon made his “first appearance” on October 15, 1942, Mighty Mouse was right on his heels, appearing in his first Terrytoons studio feature, “The Mouse of Tomorrow,” the very next day. Next thing he knew, Livermon was assembling all the information he could about Mighty Mouse – a list of his films, comics he’d appeared in, essays that had been written about him. He then collected this information into a short booklet called “Memories of see Mighty Mouse page 3A

it was worth the wait. “I admired the American women because they achieved so much, said Sabatini, who became a member of the Powhatan Woman’s Club in 2000, shortly after moving to the United States. Sabbatini’s story of becoming a Woman’s Club of Powhatan member is one of many that will likely be shared today, as members gather to mark the 40th anniversary of the local club. Started in 1962, the Woman’s Club of Powhatan has welcomed a number of new members in recent years, swelling its membership from less than 40 to 56 active participants. Women around the county find out about the organization through word of mouth, Sabbatini says, and through the numerous charitable causes the club has championed

over the years, most notably the Powhatan Clothes Closet. In addition to that venture, which helps provide clothing for low income residents while raising money for charity, the Woman’s Club of Powhatan raises funds for the local women’s shelter; hosts a silent auction for Operation Smile; and helps support local fire and rescue operations. They have also recently begun adopting a family for Christmas, a move that “has really turned into something wonderful, said Sabbatini. Asked to describe a typical Woman’s Club member, Sabbatini replied that they are typically interested in the community, fun, friendly and outgoing. And as for the qualifications needed to join the group? Sabbatini laughed, but didn’t hesitate: “You just have to be a woman.

ALS: Family faced worst fear Continued from page 1A

of what they’d lost. In the weeks following her death, he remembers, “I would just go out and drive. I just had to get out. As the Mazzas have learned, the disease is seemingly random in its targets and unflinchingly cruel in the way it slowly robs the quality of life from those affected by it. For Cassie Mazza, the disease presented first as a loss of sensation in her fingers. As is the story with so many other victims, doctors initially misdiagnosed her symptoms – in her case they told her arthritis was the likely culprit – and prescribed a treatment they assured her would solve the problem. When it didn’t, Mazza went back. “There are dozens of different diseases that mimic the symptoms of ALS, explains John, and his wife was tested for all of them. Finally, a doctor at MCV gave them the news they had feared the most. It was, he was almost certain, ALS. Then he gently offered them the only advice that most doctors have for their patients after giving them that diagnosis: go home, he told them, and get your things in order. In fact, the family did just the opposite While Cassie steeled herself for the fight of her life, John set to work marshalling all the resources he could to save his wife. John is an engineer by trade, a fixer of things and a firm believer that there is no problem that can’t be solved. Instead of simply bowing down in the face of the diagnosis, he sought a second opinion. Then a third. He called renowned experts in the field and fought tirelessly to get his wife into as many clinical trials as he could. The idea of simply giving up was unthinkable to them. “Cassie didn’t want to die, said John. “She

did everything in her power not to die. For the next three years, Cassie Mazza fought ALS with everything she had. Even as the disease continued to take from her – confining her to a wheelchair, stealing her ability to eat and then finally to breathe on her own – she fought. On June 20, 2012, Cassie Mazza finally succumbed to ALS. But John points out that his wife was able to give one final gift before she died: In accordance with her wishes, samples of Cassie’s brain and spinal tissue were harvested and donated to ALS research laboratories. The samples will allow researchers a rare glimpse into the effects of the disease, rare because most families do not choose to make such a donation. Part of the reason, said John, is that the tissue must be taken so quickly after death. Families already dealing with the excruciating pain of losing their loved one must almost immediately stand aside and allow the body to be taken away so that the samples can be obtained. In Cassie’s case, it was something she wanted to do, regardless of what was involved, because she wanted more than anything to find a cure. Through her donation, Cassie Mazza was able to take one more stand against the disease that took so much from her and her family – and possibly provide one more clue to unlock the mystery of ALS. If there is anything at all to be gained from all that the family went through, all the fighting and disappointment and heartbreak, said John, perhaps it is this. It was one more thing his wife wanted to do, says John, and will forever remain a part of her legacy. “Even after all she gave, John said, “Cassie has given again.

50 copies away to friends and family he also sold a Mighty Mouse, to which few on ebay. he wrote an introduction. Whether it be scuba While he gave most of the diving, traveling the world,

buying a private investigations firm (from which he has recently retired,) or putting together a book on his favorite cartoon mouse,

Livermon’s wife, Susan, says her husband is always doing something “a little different.

could expect to recoup through tuition. Under the current policy, students who have special needs can be admitted, though only if the school already has adequate staff and programs in place to accommodate them. Cole said that money concerns weren’t the only reason he was uneasy about expanding the program: discipline problems, he said, could also become an issue. District 5 board member Vernon Poe said that

Flat Rock: Many legends surround stone Continued from page 1A

Rocky Oak Road. Swanson says that for the last 12 years that she’s owned the garden center she’s often ended her day with quiet meditation on the gently sloping piece of granite. According to Swanson, the legends that surround the flat rock are numerous: from drunken cowboys falling and cracking their heads on it and thereby declaring it “Flat Rock,” to the Powhatan Indian tribe using the site for spiritual rituals.

While Swanson says that if the price is right she’ll sell, regardless of buyer, she hopes the property will go to someone who will appreciate Flat Rock’s namesake as much as she has. “I hope [the buyer] will be someone who wants to own a piece of Powhatan,” she says. *** The auction of the 1.22-acre lot at 2603 Anderson Highway will be held by Tranzon Auction at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

4-H shooting clubs compete in state event Contributed report Based on the continued interest of local youth in the field of shooting sports, a second 4-H shooting education club started in Powhatan County this spring. Both clubs traveled to Holiday Lake 4-H Center in Appomattox for the State 4H Shoot Sept 7-9. A record number of youth participated this year with a total of 296 boys and girls in attendance representing 18 counties. Frankie Barham has worked with the original 4-H shooting club for more than 18 years and has been a wealth of knowledge for the new club’s leaders, Brian Long and Annette King. Neither club could operate without the expertise of the many 4-H certified instructors and volunteer parents who commit their time to working with the young people. Powhatan 4-H Shooting Club brought 27 members to compete, while the newly formed P-town Hot Shots 4-H Club brought 10 club members. “We have a great group of kids this year,” said Barham. In particular, he noted that “the girls really shined” in the competition. For the newly-formed P-town Hot Shots club members, club leaders were thrilled with their club’s first showing and

Annual tea draws record crowd Contributed report The timing could not be better: Miss Virginia 2010, Caitlin Uze, was a keynote speaker for Powhatan Right (POWR) 5th Annual Tea on Saturday, Oct. 6. Miss Uze’s platform is about bullying and October just happens to be anti-bullying month. The audience was stunned to learn that this confident beauty queen had a speech impediment, for which she had been taunted for and told she could never do public speaking. Miss Uze told the 125 guests about her personal experiences of being bullied in school, at times to the point where she could not attend. She showed a picture of her from a few years back when she was shy and wearing both glasses and braces and asked the audience, “would this girl be teased at your school?” And then added, “this girl ... is me.” She is anything but shy now as she makes her rounds to hundreds of

schools throughout the state giving her message about treating others with kindness and dignity. “The bully doesn’t define you, he/she defines himself.” Caitlin asked the attendees to “JOIN IN,” commit to being a little kinder to one another, and commit to anti-bullying efforts. Miss Virginia was a top ten finalist in the Miss American pageant and is currently working for C-Span. Congressman J. Randy Forbes, R-4th, was also a keynote speaker at the Tea; his third time attending this event. He, Delegate Lee Ware, R-Powhatan, and Senator John Watkins, R-Powhatan, gave updates about what is taking place in our district, state and country. Ware spoke of about Imminent Domain, an issue that will be on the ballot this year, whereby the state of Virginia is seeking to protect the government from taking personal homes/land for non-essen-

tial use. Of the days event he said that the [POWR Tea] was one place you could go every year to have civil discourse about topics of concern to the public and that POWR cast their net far and wide with invitations to the event. Besides the speakers, a highlight of every POWR Tea is honoring the veterans. The World War II Veterans are always special guests of honor and each in attendance was recognized. But this year there was something new to remember those local heroes who have passed on. POWR unveiled the World War II Banner Project, whereby life-size banners are created in memory of the loved one. These banners will be displayed at parades and memorial events all around the state as well as locally. The project is funded by individual sponsors so there is no charge to the families. Of the Tea, Resident

Tom Rando stated, “I like the idea of a Tea where everyone sits down and can enjoy the talks, the food, the company…” Speaking of the food, with Andrea Jenkins at the helm, the food is always a lure with most of it homemade and accompanied by freshly brewed coffee and tea. “Some of the best desserts in the state” said Forbes. For five years, the Tea has remained at a nominal fee of $10 per person, with kids under 18 being free. Most of the proceeds from ticket sales, donations and the silent auction, go towards next year’s Tea and the WWII Veteran’s Christmas Project and other outreach projects for our local World War II Veterans. The Tea ended with the special recognition of a few local outstanding citizens who all had either served our country and/or who had served others and/or their community in some extraordinary man-

ner. Honorees included Mr. Tony Hackenberg, Mr. William Kornegay and POWR member, Mrs. Debbie Elam. “The Tea just keeps getting better and better each year,” says Co-president Debbie Jones. The POWR team spends nine months of the year planning the event and focusing on securing speakers that are of interest to the local community. POWR member, Krystal Solzbach, concurred by saying this “was the best Tea yet.” For more information regarding the anti-bullying issue or POWR’s new World War II Banner Project, please contact POWR at P.O. Box 1193 Powhatan, VA. 23139 or write POWR08@gmail.com. Contributed by Powhatan Right’s Lisa McNerney and Debbie Jones. Powhatan Right is a local women’s group supporting conservative issues.

The Powhatan Extension Office will host an “Interest Meeting” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the basement conference room in the Powhatan Village Building, 3910 Old Buckingham Road. All youth and parents interested in showing and learning more about livestock are welcome. MY POINT OF VIEW

Current President cares little about the fate of the county

Call them the unsung heroes of the football season, those kids that will never take a snap or score the game-winning touchdown, but who nevertheless make significant contributions. I‘m not speaking here of the third string quarterback or the kid who fetches the water bottles. I’m talking about the Powhatan High School marching band. Before we go any further: No, I am not going to say that band is a sport or that hoisting a bassoon is as physically punishing as manning the offensive line. But no one who has ever seen a group of young musicians broiling in the sun during a summer practice session, or rehearsing a mind-bendingly complicated routine for the 500th time, can say what they do is a walk in the park. As I’ve seen on more than one occasion, these kids work hard. But what they bring to the experience of watching high school football is often, if not ignored, perhaps not fully appreciated. No, they don’t throw or tackle. But tell me this: Is there anything that says “football” quite as distinctly as the first rumble of the drum line as you approach a high school field on a crisp fall afternoon? Would halftime be nearly as good if you had someone trot out into the middle of the field and recite lines from Walt Whitman? Powhatan High’s band certainly doesn’t need me to champion their efforts -- they have case after case of trophies for that. But it is worth mentioning that their contributions have provided the soundtrack to just about every miraculous catch, bone-rattling hit and come-from-behind win by the Indians in recent memory. As good a fan experience as Powhatan football provides, the band program has made it even better. And that takes some sweet music indeed.

he election on Nov. 6, 2012, is, undoubtedly, the most important election in the history of our country. We have a person in the White Home who cares nothing about the United States.

*** We can’t help but throw in a reminder that the 10th anniversary celebration of Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape will be held this weekend in the Village. Always a wonderful event, it is perhaps the best excuse you will get all year to eat, drink and be truly merry. Hope to see you there!

He lied repeatedly to an apparently uninformed group of citizens about what he intended to do if he was elected in 2008. It’s true that George W. Bush spent too much money and was weak on immigration. Obama accused Bush of being unpatriotic for spending so much money. Bush spent four trillion dollars in eight years. Obama has spent over six trillion dollars in less than four years. Obama has enacted over eighty-two thousand pages of new regulations on businesses, thus restricting them from growing. Many had to go out of business. Thirteen so-called green companies were given high loans and all went bankrupt later. He has vowed to bankrupt the coal industry. Foreign relations are in shambles. He has apologized to every Muslim nation, blaming the United States for their problems. Obama was behind “Fast and Furious.” A border patrol agent was killed, along with many others. The purpose of this was to show that weapons were coming from the United States. He could then try to invoke more gun control through Congress. However, the plan backfired. Eric Holder has repeatedly lied and stalled on giving Congress reports they have requested. Fellow Americans, this man, Barack

L E T T E R S TO T H E E D I TO R Mother thanks all who helped her daughter after car accident

Because so many people cared enough to get involved, my daughter was provided with the fast and proper care she needed. For that, I thank each and every person for being there that day. What you do really does make a difference. I thank God for giving her a second chance and putting all of the right people in place. The trauma team at VCU Medical Center was awesome. We are blessed to live in an area with so many dedicated and talented doctors and nurses. Although it has been five and a half months since that day, it’s important to me that you all know how grateful my daughter and I are. It is my understanding that the person in the other vehicle was ok, but I have never had the opportunity to talk with them. I sincerely hope that person is doing well. My last, but not least thank you goes to all of the people at Powhatan High School and in the community who prayed for her recovery and were there to help during her hospital stay as well as afterwards. The cards, gifts, food and company were very much appreciated. Powhatan is a wonderful community and I am proud to be a part of it.

Dear Editor, I would like the opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for the many people involved in helping my daughter during a recent car crash she was involved in. The crash occurred near the intersection of Dorset and Moseley Rd. on Thursday, April 26 at about 10:30 a.m. My daughter suffered extensive and life-threatening injuries from which she is still recovering. On the day of the crash, I was in Florida when I got the call that no parent wants to hear. It was VCU Medical Center stating that she was there and that I should get back here as quickly as I could. I was able to get an emergency flight back to Richmond, all while my daughter was undergoing surgery. When I arrived at the hospital, I would learn how traumatic her injuries were. That was when I also started hearing about how so many people came together to get her the help she needed. From the person who called Thank you, 911 to the first responders, firemen, EMT’s Tammy Weekley and Holly Dettmer and police, each person was instrumental in Powhatan helping my daughter get the care she see Letters page 11A needed to survive.

Hussein Obama, has no regard for our country and is doing all he can to destroy it. If he is given four more years in the White House, our great country as we know it will cease to exist. The United States of America will become a Socialist nation and that is only one step away from Communism. If you decide not to vote at all, you will help Obama to win. If you hate our country, then vote for Obama. If you love your country, then vote for Romney. Every news media in our country with the exception of Fox News is for Obama. These news medias will skew anything to help Obama. Try listening to Fox News or read the Washington Times newspaper if you want the truth. You will not obtain objective reporting from the mainstream media. My wife and I have three grandsons in the military. Obama is gradually going to destroy our military, if given more time. I belong to no party. I am an Independent. I support the most loyal and honest candidate, the one who will support our Constitution and not trample on it as Obama has. Whoever you are, if you read this letter, please think long and hard before you vote in November. The future of our country remains in your hands. If you help to keep Obama in the White House, you will have to accept the blame for the destruction of our great country.

Tax info doesn’t hold value for voters By Jason Moore Contributing columnist

In recent presidential campaigns the candidates have fought over how much personal information should be released, especially tax returns and medical records. The release of all this personal information begs two questions: how much do we deserve to know and how accurate is the information that is released? I can understand releasing some medical information. When one person can enter a launch sequence and the world as we know it will no longer exist, it is relevant to know a person’s medical history, including whether the candidate has a history of mental or physical illness; what, if any, medication a candidate takes; and the effects of the medication. These seem like fair questions. Releasing tax information, however, seems completely foolish to me. With few exceptions, all our Presidents have been rich. The only Presidents of modest means when they took office were Zachary Taylor, Andrew Johnson, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman and Bill Clinton. People of modest means usually do not possess the money to travel around the country on a bus or plane emblazoned with their picture asking for your support to become President. So does it really matter that Obama is worth $5 million and Romney $150 million. Furthermore, what will tax returns tell use? It is doubtful that a politician running for President will have an obvious falsehood or error on their tax return. If they did, I hope the IRS would have caught the error before MSNBC. You also will not see an attached 102B-form listing any bribes or quid pro quo events. Imagine line 47(b) Please list all payoffs you have received in the last year for votes you have made while in political office. Bribes are not something you put on your tax return; they come in plain vanilla envelopes. In addition, who cares what tax rate a person paid on their tax return? I want a President who will take advantage of every legal loophole provided. After all, the loopholes are placed in the see Taxes page 11A

Taxes: What do records show? Continued from page 10A

Bank for $45,685, but would say they have a loan with the bank for $10,000-$100,000 in value. The campaign disclosure form allows the public to have a general idea of a person’s wealth, allows the candidate some privacy and allows for the detection of irregularities. For example, a person claiming an income of $150,000 most likely would not have a $50 million house or houses in the Cayman Islands, New Hampshire and Utah. All of the discussion over the release of medical or tax information is a smokescreen. The only Presidents to face real threats of imprisonment for their behavior were LBJ, Nixon and Clinton, and their improper activities were not going to be found on a tax return or in their medical records. So, the release of tax and medical information is based purely on the honor system, and amounts to nothing more than the blowing of hot air.

tax code to encourage certain behavior. Mortgage deductions encourage you to buy a house. Healthcare deductions encourage you to get healthcare. Lower capital gains tax rates encourage you to obtain income from investments and not from a salary. If you get mad at a person for using a legal loophole, then direct your attention where it truly needs directing. Direct the anger at Congress for allowing the loophole. A fairer way to determine a person’s wealth and whether it was legally obtained is to review a candidate’s financial disclosure form. Almost every state requires candidates to list their income, assets and liabilities in broad categories and values. They do not need to list their exact income ($50,000) or the value of their home ($456,789), but instead will check a box saying they make between $0-$100,000 in income and their house is worth $300,000Jason Moore is a $500,000. Letters: Festival of the Grape offers something for all Continued from page 10A

Festival is something for all to be proud of Dear Editor, Ten years ago a handful of inspiring Powhatan citizens had a vision of welcoming visitors to our historic courthouse to share our beautiful courthouse green while enjoying live music, local wine, and quality arts and crafts. All while stimulating the local economy in the process. In a few days, on Oct. 20, our Courthouse will proudly host the 10th anniversary of Powhatan’s Festival of the Grape. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those early visionaries. Because of this event, the Powhatan Chamber is able to exist and to provide resources for nearly 300 business partners and serve as a resource for current residents, visitors and prospective

residents. Without this event, there would be no Powhatan Chamber. We are proud to partner with other local nonprofits to make the day a success. The mission of our chamber includes giving back to our community. It will be our pleasure to present 10% of the profit to the Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad so they may use the money to help train the volunteers who will take care of all the residents of our county. Thank you to the founders who spent countless hours and show amazing dedication and who had the vision to create the biggest day in Powhatan during the year. Thank you to the committee and volunteers who are so committed to making this festival the cream of the crop in the region. And thank you to the entire community for your continued support.

In memory of a good man taken far too soon

ing he wasn’t able to go to Briery Creek fishing. I called Warren a week later about going to Claude’s to put up tree stands, but he told me he wasn’t going to be able to hunt this year. When I broke down over the phone Warren said “John, everything is going to be okay”. This man was my best friend. Warren was a man of character. His friends knew him by his wisdom, dignity, respect and, of course, his courage. I pray I’ll be able to walk in his footsteps when my time comes. May God ease the pain of mourning for his devoted wife, Amy, daughter Megan and son Aaron. Warren, my friend, you will be sorely missed. You will always be in our hearts. God willing, I will see you again. Goodbye for now . . .

Dear Editor, Warren [Snellings] went to be with the Lord on the morning of Oct. 4 – his loving wife, Amy, at his side when he left. Warren had been diagnosed with kidney cancer four years prior and given two years to live. You would never have known this man was dying by the way he carried himself, his family and friends. For over 25 years. Warren and I spent countless hours hunting, fishing, and working together. Oh the times we had! We never had a bad fishing day (not that we never got skunked)! Fishing will never be the same without him. I realized around late August that his time was John Parnell getting near. Warren Powhatan called and apologized (that was his way) say-

PHS defense registers six sacks in 16-0 win By Michael Schoeffel Contributing Writer

On a night in which the temperature dipped into the 40’s and the bite of fall could be felt with each crisp gust of wind, the offensive units of both Fluvanna and Powhatan did their best to mimic the frigid conditions swirling around them. Simply put, they went cold.

Quarterback Joe Lewis accounted for both Indians’ touchdowns - one through the air, one on the ground - and John Malcolm added a field goal to give Powhatan a pleasant 16-0 victory over the visiting Fluvanna Flying Flucos. It was the Indians’ first shutout of the year. Malcolm’s field goal initiated the scoring with a little over three minutes remaining in the first quarter. With the wind at his back, he split the uprights on a 26-yarder to put the Indians up 3-0. Surprisingly, that would round out see Indians page 2B

Last Friday night’s game against Fuqua needed to be many things for the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights. Of course, to remain undefeated in the Division and to reach the 500 mark overall, it needed to be a win. But it also needed to provide some healing rest for the numerous Knights’ walking wounded, while at the same time affording the youngsters further down the depth chart a chance to gain valuable game experience. According to BSH head coach Brice Fritts, “we needed to jump on them early and turn Johnson the corner on our season.” BSH did exactly that, posting fourteen first-quarter points before adding 21 in the second stanza, pulling the starters and cruising to the 35-0 win. Savarie Ethan Johnson, one of those walking wounded, put the first score on the board with a twoyard run and, after four carries for 36 yards, took a seat, leaving the ball carrying duties to sePrince nior Tommy Savarie and junior David Prince. Savarie responded with a seven- yard TD run and accumulated 50 total yards on 10 carries. “Tommy (Savarie) ran harder than he has,” said Fritts. Prince also piled up 50 yards, but on only four carries, including a 40-yard jaunt. Nursing a bad ankle, which seems to be aggravated with each long-run, Prince so far has tallied 191 yards on 24 carries for the season. “His ankle is always bothering him, but he is going to be dangerous when we get that fixed and he can combine with Ethan (Johnson) in the backfield,” Fritts said. Sam Drewicz and Robbie Baxter continue to impress at their wide receiver slots; with Drewicz scoring the second BSH touchdown on a 62yard pass from quarterback Ryan Bendele, while Baxter notched TD number three on a 26-yard connection with Bendele, who finished the game 3-for-5 for 99 yards, including the two scores. Baxter stole a bit of Drewicz’s see Knights page 2B

the scoring in the first half. The first 48 minutes of the game were utterly dominated by defense. Here’s some proof to support that fact: - After one quarter of play, the two teams had 13 yards of total offense - combined. - The Indians didn’t complete a pass until 4:03 left in the second quarter. - The Flucos had only two first downs and failed to advance the ball into Indians territory during the first two quarters. Defense remained the main story in the second half, but the Indians offense squeezed out two touchdowns and took a comfortable 16-0 lead. The first score came on a beautiful 26-yard post route from Lewis to Norris Goode. The play was set up by a perfectly executed play-action fake by Lewis, and capped off by a precisely-ran route by Goode. Malcolm’s extra point was blocked, but no matter. The Indians were ahead by two scores, 90. The second touchdown came on a Lewis’ bootleg in the middle of the fourth quarter. Once again, the senior quarterback executed an outstanding ball fake, but this time he tucked the pigskin to his side and

snuck around the corner for a 2-yard touchdown. Malcolm’s extra point was good and the Indians went up 16-0. One surprising development that unfolded in the second half was the benching of running back L.J. Jackson. Jackson, who had ran for only 27 yards in the first half, was pulled in favor of Stephen Hodges, a more physical, downhill runner. Hodges put up decent numbers, running 15 times for 56 yards, an average of 3.7 yards per carry. Jackson, a sophomore and the team’s leading rusher, only touched the ball once over the final two quarters. It remains to be seen if Hodges and Jackson will split time over the remaining three games or if the starting job will be completely handed over to Hodges. After tallying zero

and completed six passes for 60 yards. But he had his fair share of troubles as well, most of which can be blamed on porous pass protection by Fluvanna’s front five. The Powhatan defense sacked him six times and intercepted him twice, one of which was nearly returned for a touchdown by Norris Goode, thanks to some slick, Deion Sandersesque moves in the open field. In addition to Goode’s interception, several players on the Powhatan defense had stand-out nights worthy of mention. Jake Salisbury led the way with 13 tackles, Mason Cabaniss recorded 11 and Chris DeLeon added nine tackles and two-and-ahalf sacks. Tyler Dobrucky snagged Powhatan’s other interception. The victory brings

the Indians record to 4-3 (1-1) and keeps them in the hunt for a spot in the Division 4 playoffs. The loss drops Fluvanna to 2-6 (1-2) Next Friday, the Indians travel to “The Jungle,” as it’s called, to take on the Louisa Lions (2-5). The Lions, who were on a bye week last Friday, are usually contenders for the Jefferson District crown but are suffering through a down year in 2012. They lost by two touchdowns to Fluvanna on October 5, and need to win the remainder of their games just to make it back to .500. giveaways last week against Western Albemarle (the top team in the Jefferson District), the Indians once again contracted the turnover bug against Fluvanna (a team expected to finish near the bottom of the district standings). They coughed up the ball four times - two on offense, two on special teams and each time the Flucos recovered. Luckily for the Indians, the Fluvanna offense was impotent for most of the evening and unable to capitalize on the lack of ball security. The majority of Fluvanna’s offensive output was engineered by one man: quarterback Dashon Tibbs. As a whole, Fluvanna compiled 148 yards of total offense. Tibbs accounted for 134, by himself. The senior carried the ball 23 times for 74 yards

punt return thunder, dancing through the punt coverage team for a 56-yard return and the final touchdown. As pleased as he was with the Knights balanced offensive production, Fritts said that he was even more impressed with the BSH defensive effort. Led by freshman linebacker Jack Goodwyn; nine tackles, including four for a loss and senior Collin Rogers, the Knights held Fuqua to minus-20 yards for the game. Drewicz contributed, what for him is becoming a typical performance, with two interceptions, with a third 70-yard TD interception called back on a penalty. But, what most excited Fritts was speed. “For the first time this year we looked really fast on defense,” Fritts commented. The Knights will host Isle of Wight “for all the marbles,” this Friday night. “It will be the typical knock-down, drag-out fight for the VCC Championship,” said Fritts. In the interim he plans to enjoy this latest victory and the confidence the week of practice generated. “We knew when we walked onto that field, there was no way we were going to lose.”

or the small. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse.” The popularity of Lacrosse continues to grow throughout the nation and its is the fasted growing team sport in America. According to US Lacrosse in nine years from 2001 to 2010 the popularity of the sport has risen more than 250 percent . The total number of players in the US now is approaching 650,000 with 325,000 of these players are youth players. Recently, the University of Richmond decided to add a Men’s varsity NCAA Division I program to its athletic department. One of the reasons for this decision was due to the overall growth of popularity of the game. Niles also said that “we are very fortunate to have a strong lacrosse program near by at the University of Virginia

Hey Eddie, My 2002 Dodge Ram pick up takes a long time to start. It cranks over fine, but I feel like I have to hold the key to the start position way too long. Do you think a tune-up would help? Mark Powhatan Mark, If your asking about if a tune-up will help, it’s probably been too long since you had one. Every engine needs a little TLC from time to time. I think you should check or have checked the condition of your engine. Bad spark plugs or ignition components could cause the problem you’re talking about. Mark, instead of just holding the key to the start position, try cycling the key from “off” to “on” about three times before you go to the start position. If this makes your truck start right up the problem is probably a bad check valve in the fuel pump. The check valve in the fuel pump keeps fuel in the fuel lines and close to the injectors so

Hey Eddie, I drive a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer with 58,000 miles, so it’s not under warranty. My problem is my ABS light is on. The shop that checked it for me couldn’t tell me for sure what the problem was. They said all the speed sensors tested good and the module may be bad, but they were not 100% sure. The module is very expensive so I don’t want to just replace it if it is not the problem. Is there a way to be sure? Bill Cartersville Bill, I don’t blame you, a module is a pretty expensive guess. If your ABS (anti-locking braking system) light is on it should have set a code that can be retrieved using a scan tool. A qualified technician should be able to use that code to start a diagnosis. After testing, the technician should be able to tell what the problem is. Most ABS systems in today’s late model cars can be very complex. Having the right diagnostic equipment is very important. On your year Trailblazer, a common problem I have encountered is a wiring harness that runs too close to the air conditioning compressor. The edge of the compressor pulley cuts the insulation which then causes the wire to ground out on the compressor or it can cut the wire into and cause an open circuit. This is not a real hard repair, but could take awhile to find if you haven’t seen it before. Bill, just remember - diagnostics takes time and time is money. You could expect to pay two or more hours of labor just to find the problem, but it should be able to be found without having to just replace parts. I hope this helps. Trivia: What model year was the first for the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird?

you won’t have long crank times. When this valve sticks, fuel will drain back to the fuel tank when the engine is cut off. A local group of parents, coaches and business owners have banded together to start a lacrosse program here in Powhatan. “With the explosive growth and popularity of the game of lacrosse nationwide and in the local Richmond area we think it’s time for Powhatan to start a lacrosse program,” said Joe Niles one of parents /coaches who are interested in starting the program. “Lacrosse is a great game and it teaches many of life’s values such as hard work, sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity and character. I was fortunate growing up to have played the sport at the youth level and through high

school and even college. I’ve learned so much about life playing the game of lacrosse and I’ve made a lot of close friends too,” said Niles. The history of Lacrosse can be traced all the way back to the early Native American Indians’ of the Virginias, North and South Carolinas, and Upstate New York and Canada. According to US Lacrosse, the national governing body for Lacrosse, the history of Lacrosse “spans centuries, lacrosse is the oldest sport in North America. Rooted in Native American religion, lacrosse was often played to resolve conflicts, heal the sick, and develop strong, virile men. To Native Americans, lacrosse is still referred to as “The Creator’s Game.” Lacrosse is also recognized as the fastest game on two feet and can best be described as “a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. Powhatan’s Jack Leipertz bagged this trophy buck while hunting with his father, Shane, on Sept. 29, which was Virginia Youth Day. “Jack has practiced for many years for this moment and he did everything right, said Shane. “Our very special friend Wayne D. Morris of Powhatan owns the piece of property in Nelson that my family often enjoys and Jack’s buck could never have been possible without Mr Morris’s generous support. Also of note: Jack and his sister Kate recently had their first Offshore fishing trip. On Sept. 7, 2012 Jack released a 200 lb class Blue Marlin and his sister Kate Leipertz enjoyed the thrill of stand-up fishing while battling a number of big dolphin. They were fishing aboard the Pescadora with their Grandparents Bob and Maureen Leipertz of Richmond.

Semi-pro team offers some a second chance By Bruce Wells Sports Editor

O

n a humid, late August Sunday morning, during a relentless pouring rain, a group of guys begin their journey back to glory.

They range from 18 to 31 years old, some have lost a step or two with age, yet some have not reached their prime. Be it age, a bum knee or past off-the-field troubles, this group of 80 men have pride and determination on their

side. They are here for the love of a game that is by all accounts king of the spectator sports, all in hopes of winning a championship and maybe even clearing a new path for themselves. Meet the Richmond Venom, a new semi-pro football team gearing up for its inaugural 2013 season. They are a mix of former high school athletes from Manchester, Clover Hill, Midlothian, L.C. Bird, Cosby, and even Amelia and Matoaca, all with one goal in mind – to win. The Venom will be new members to the Southern Virginia Division of the ACFA, the Atlantic Coast Football Alliance. Though regular season schedules have not yet been set, the upcoming season will comprise of 8-10 regular season games plus playoffs, and a championship. ACFA rules comply with those of the National Football League, including a 60minute game clock, a 40-second play clock, rules of the game and field dimensions. River City Sportsplex (formerly SportsQuest) in Chesterfield will be where the Venom are scheduled to play their home games, the first of which is slated to be held the first week in March. The idea for the Ven-

om began over a year ago when Team Owner/ Head Coach Michael Wilson decided that he wanted to create a local football team that was more than just a beer league, where guys drive up on game day, dig their helmet and pads out of the car truck, and go at it. He realized that that through a proper semi-pro team, more players from the Central Virginia area might reach professional leagues. “We felt that a lot of good talent was simply being overlooked in the Richmond area,” said Wilson. “A lot of high school young men don’t get the opportunity to go to a four-year college possibly because of their GPA, or financial reasons, or whatever the case may be. We started this up to help those young men to get the exposure, to help them get their GPA’s up, and help them get into a four-year college. The college players that get overlooked by the NFL, we help them to get the exposure to possibly get into Arena ball, let them know that there are other avenues out there for them to take instead of just hanging up their cleats.” Venom players are not paid, so players from the team are still eligible to play NCAA football if an opportunity should arise. Ac-

cording to Wilson, for players who don’t go directly from college to the NFL, a lack of amateur and minor league football programs creates a barrier that keeps players from reaching higher levels of football. “Once you’ve [stopped] playing for a year or two, it’s hard to get a look from some of these teams. It’s our aim to give players an opportunity to develop their skills, play in game situations and create a body of work that can be shopped to agents and scouts.” Players must be at least 18 years old, and if they are still in high school, they must fulfill their high school athletic obligations before they may play for the Venom. “I’m not going to interfere with their high school athletics,” Wilson said. “I have kids of my own and school and education always comes first.” The Richmond Venom is registered with the state as a 501c3 nonprofit. As a non-profit, the entire staff of Venom coaches, board of directors and yes even the owner volunteer all of their time to the organization meaning that 100% of the funds raised throughout the year are used strictly for the team and also for its community efforts.

“We are proud to say that we are a 100% volunteer organization,” said Wilson. The team pays for some expenses such as travel, away game meals, hotel, jerseys, pants, belt, socks, and officiat-

“We felt that a lot of good talent was simply being overlooked in the Richmond area.” Richmond Venom head coach Michael Wilson ing, but players are responsible for their own equipment as far as helmet and pads. Wilson said the team’s sponsors include, Sports Gear, Renegade Athletics, Glory Days Grill, Silva Painting, and Wing Command. “It’s not about money, it’s for the love of the game,” Team Vice-President and Defensive Head Coach Derek Chisholm said. “It’s to try to help these young men get to bigger and better. Football is based on one thing – fundamentals,” he said. “You can be fast, you can be strong, but if you’re not fundamentally sound, you’re not going to be a successful ballplayer or successful in life. It’s not just about football we want to help them in life in general.” Wilson went on to talk about the Venom code of conduct and creating a family atmosphere. “We have a team code of conduct. We want families to come, so we don’t allow cheap shots or bad language. Profanity is not allowed on our team. Not in practices, not in games. We don’t tolerate it. It’s going to be clean football,” Wilson said. “We strive for perfection not only on the football field, but within our community as well. We are committed to making our community a better place through our community works and emphasis on mentoring young athletes. As our organization continues to grow, so will our commitment to giving back to the community.”
