hen Chuck and Debbie Zacharias, owners of Powhatan’s Skippers Creek Vineyards, decided to see if they could turn their passion for good wine into a viable business, they tried hard to make sure all of their bases were covered. Chuck, a cardiologist, took online courses on wine production through the University of California and both he and Debbie, a cardiac nurse, read every book they could find on the subject. They talked to experts, secured the help of Dr. Jeffrey Cooper of Cooper Vineyards, and met with wine consultant is Tom Payette In fact, the couple says the only thing they didn’t know as they embarked on their new adventure was just how much work they were in for. “We really didn’t realize it,” laughed Chuck, describing the hundreds of hours of mowing, spraying and vinetending it has taken to manage their five acres, which could potentially produce 40 tons of grapes. Compared to battling things like powdery mildew, he chuckled, “cardiology is easy.” Thankfully, the couple’s efforts appear to have paid off: on May 10, representatives from the Blue Moon Bottling Company arrived at the vineyard. Just a few hours later, the first 2,000 bottles of Skippers Creek Chardonnay sat corked, labeled and ready for purchase. There are still a few more regulatory hurdles left to negotiate before they are totally up and running, says the couple, but seeing their first finished bottles glinting in the sun marked a true milestone for their young business. “It was special,” said Debbie. “It made us realize: we’re here.” For more information on Skippers Creek Vineyards, visit the vineyard’s web site at skipperscreekvineyard.com or call (804) 598-7291.
