Show aims to honor local veterans

Wife of former Virginia senator decries ‘Obamacare,’ voices support for offshore drilling

Annual musical extravaganza will feature local talent, tributes to soldiers

By Emily Darrell

The Memorial Musical program for veterans and military will take place this Sunday, May 27, at 3:30 p.m. at Powhatan High School on Judes Ferry Road. The show, organized by Powhatan resident Ruth Boatwright, gives the Boatwright community an opportunity to pause and honor those men and women who have sacrificed for this country. Patriotic songs, love songs made popular during the war years, and hymns are all presented in the show. “The people who sing are our own talented folks from Powhatan who sing with love in their hearts for those heroes among us,” said Boatwright. “And of course there are those who are in the audience, standing for their anthem – even if they have to be helped up – saluting the flags as they pass by.” This year’s program will honor all veterans, said Boatwright, but especially the World War II veterans whose ranks are thinning every day. “We are hopeful that some of our younger GIs will be on hand to walk on stage with these men whose days of war are over, but with memories that live on in their hearts and minds every day,” Boatwright said. If you are a veteran and have not had your picture featured at the annual show, please bring your photo to the Richardson - HarrisBoatwright Insurance Agency, 3829 Old Buckingham Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

According to Susan Allen, wife of former Virginia Senator George Allen, the passing of President Obama’s health care reform bill – commonly known as “Obamacare” to its detractors – is “one of the worst things Allen that could have happened in our country.” Along with the repeal of the health care bill, Allen would also like to see the moratorium on offshore drilling lifted in Virginia and the corporate tax rate lowered, which she believes will encourage businesses to hire more employees. Two Powhatan county students selected for HOBY seminar Kimberly Robben and Taylor Holloway, Powhatan residents and sophomores at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot and Powhatan High School respectively, were recently selected by their schools to participate in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. On May 18, 19 and 20 at James Madison University, Robben and Holloway took part in a series of programs designed to inspire today’s youth to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY was founded by actor Hugh O’Brian in 1958 in response to Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s remark, “The most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves.” Through the efforts of volunteers and the contributions of HOBY’s large network of supporters, nearly 9,000 students like Robben and Holloway participate in HOBY programs annually. With the core values of volunteerism, integrity, excellence, diversity and community partnership, HOBY seeks to motivate individuals to make a positive difference within our global society through effective and compassionate leadership. HOBY lays the foundation for a strong future by teaching students “how to think, not what to think.”

“Politics on the Porch” tour, in order to promote her husband’s run for a second term in the U.S. Senate. After serving as Governor from 19941998, Allen, who is the son of the famed NFL coach of the same name, served as a Virginia Senator from 2000-2006. His narrow loss to Democrat Jim Webb has often been blamed on a widely-publicized comment he made months before the 2006 election, in which he referred to one of Webb’s staffers, an American man of Indian descent, as “macaca” – allegedly a raciallycharged slang term for monkey – and told him: “Welcome to America.” However, with that gaffe six years in the past, Ms. Allen believes it’s now her husband’s time to regain his Senate seat

and play his part in what she referred to as “the great American comeback.” “I think it’s George’s time again,” she said. Though other Republicans are still vying for the nomination – including former Virginia Tea Party chairwoman, Jamie Radtke, and Del. Bob Marshall, of Prince William – Allen is heavily favored to win the primary. Provided that he does, he will be running against Tim Kaine, former governor and former mayor of Richmond, who Democrats have chosen to replace the retiring Webb. After hosting a luncheon at Erin’s Village Eatery and taking a tour of several small businesses in the Powhatan Village, Ms. Allen continued to the home of Lisa McNerney, a co-founder of the Powhatan Women

more than 300 communicable disease investigations and have handled a caseload of more than 200 participants in the WIC program, a supplemental nutrition program for mom-to-be, infants, breastfeeding women, and children under the age of five. Both Dr. Parham Jaberi, director for the Chesterfield Health District –which encompasses Chesterfield and Powhatan counties and the city of Colonial Heights – and Jane Emerson, the head nurse at the Powhatan Health Department, say that they have the capacity to handle even more cases. “Our mission is to expand services,” Jaberi said. “We think people do not realize the various services provided by the health department.” Jaberi said that while people might think of the health department as being only for the low-income or uninsured, this is not necessarily the case. The health department, for instance, provides overseas travel immunizations for citizens

of any income level. Emerson said that while these immunizations are not necessarily less expensive at the health department than at a private primary care provider, it may be easier to get an appointment at the health department and the immunization process is likely to be more streamlined – i.e. no trips to the pharmacy to purchase your own medicines, and no need to go to different doctors for different shots. Powhatan, like every other Virginia county, is required by law to have a health department, and like most other counties the funding comes from two-thirds state funds and one-third local funds. Jaberi said he is not trying to increase funding for his district; he merely wants to encourage citizens to utilized the services that their tax dollars are already paying for. Jaberi said that many Virginia health departments, for instance, do not have maternity clinics, and that Powhatan, in that regard, is fortunate. “We have crosstrained, efficient staff,” he said.

Republicans (who now refer to themselves as the Powhatan RIGHT), where around two dozen county residents had gathered on McNerney’s poolside patio to hear her speak. Of the lushly landscaped patio Allen joked: “Nobody’s going to be able to top politics on the porch in Powhatan.” Among the notable guests were Powhatan Commonwealth’s Attorney Bob Beasley, Commissioner of the Revenue Jamie Timberlake, and school board chair Debbie Jones. Many of the guests agreed with nods or audible “Amen”s as Allen repeatedly insisted that American politics need to undergo a massive change. “I just can’t imagine four more years in this direction,” Allen said.

Rifles engage in raid on Whittaker’s Mill To mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, Powhatan Today will run a monthly article detailing what is happening in Powhatan, with the two Powhatan units fighting during the same time period as one hundred and fifty years ago. The soldiers mentioned and quotes provided in the articles are real. Some of the soldiers have descendants living in Powhatan.

By Jason Moore Special to Powhatan Today

tured a Union artillery battery. Unfortunately, Col. Wickham was injured during the battle, and will need some time to recuperate. The remnants of the Powhatan Rifles were made companies B and C of the 59th Virginia Infantry Regiment. During the retreat from Yorktown, they were engaged in a raid on Whittaker’s Mill causing $300,000 worth of destruction to Federal supplies. In addition, the last of those captured in July at the Battle of Rich Mountain have been officially exchanged for Federal soldiers. The entry of the official exchange means those on parole can reenlist in the Confederate armies and fight. Many parolees have reenlisted and have been assigned to the 59th Va. Inf. Reg. with what remains of the Powhatan Rifles. The retreat forced the Powhatan Artillery to abandon its position at Blows Mill even though it never fired a shot in anger during its entire stay. The unit spent eighteen days marching through the mud and drenching

rain to Richmond. Once in Richmond, the unit was assigned a position at Redoubt No. 5 which is located on Nine Mile Road to the northeast of Richmond. A redoubt is a fortified position usually incorporated into a series of trench works. The position is part of the siege works developed as the last line of defense of Richmond. The northern press has reported that President Lincoln and the Secretaries of War and Treasury have journeyed via steamer from Washington to the Peninsula to watch McClellan’s advance on Richmond. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton is interested in seeing the army in the field, since he is the administrative genius behind the equipping and manning of McClellan’s army and all other Union land forces. Treasury Secretary Chase wants to see how all of the money he has been able to raise to support the Union war effort is being see Civil War page 7A 2594613-01

The Confederates were forced to abandon both Yorktown and Williamsburg in May. Gen. Joseph Johnston did not want to expose his forces to a long siege, so he retreated from Yorktown. To cover the retreat, Johnston detailed a force of 41,000 men to Fort Magruder the eastern most section of the defensive fortifications protecting Williamsburg. This decision led to the first pitched battle of the campaign when 32,000 Federals

attacked Ft. Magruder. The rearguard action fought at Ft. Magruder has been hailed as a major victory by McClellan in the northern press, but the battle was nothing more than a delaying action. General Johnston wanted the covering force to provide the main army time to retreat to a string of defensive fortifications ringing Richmond. Although a considerable number of troops were involved, only a few thousand were killed or wounded on either side. Nothing approaching the carnage at Pittsburg Landing was repeated on the Peninsula. The 4th Virginia Cavalry covered the army’s retreat from Yorktown to Ft. Magruder. The 4th Va. Cav. engaged in a battle with Federal Cavalry along the Telegraph Road during the retreat. During the battle at Ft. Magruder, Federal troops took an outer redoubt and the 4th Va. Cav. was ordered to retake the position. They attacked with such efficiency that they retook the redoubt and cap-

Civil War: Powhatan Artillery forced to abandon position spent. The President and cabinet members may need this time away from Washington considering the various political difficulties they have faced over the last month. On May 9th, Major General David Hunter, the commanding officer for the Department of South Carolina, Florida and Georgia, issued a General Order freeing all slaves in those states. This action was taken without Presidential or Congressional authority. Lincoln repudiated the order and removed Hunter from his position. Lincoln’s action with regards to Hunter appears to run at crosspurposes with other actions taken by his administration. Lincoln has been working with radical Republicans in Congress to pass numerous laws which have been at the heart of Federalist, Whig and Republican political agendas for years. Congress has passed a Homestead Act, Land Grant Collage Act, voted to gradually emancipate slaves in the District of Columbia and just a few weeks ago Lincoln signed a bill prohibiting slavery in Washington, D.C. In another military

controversy, Major Gen. Benjamin Butler, the military Governor of New Orleans, issued General Order 28 sometimes referred to as the Woman Order. The order states that any woman refusing to show due respect to Union soldiers shall be considered a prostitute and treated as such. This action earned Butler the nickname Beast Butler. Butler also earned the nickname Spoons Butler due to his pension for taking the silverware of rich southern families. Butler’s order stems from the treatment of Union soldiers since the occupation of New Orleans. He felt that southerners were not showing the conquering northern armies enough respect. Women spat on Union troops, called them names and showed their utter contempt for the invaders. Butler, therefore, resolved to teach the women of New Orleans a lesson. Opposition to the order was so intense within New Orleans that Butler closed the two local newspapers by occupying their offices and confiscating their presses. He allowed them to reopen a few weeks later but only under strict control wherein their content must be approved by Butler before the papers can go

to print. Butler even denied the people of New Orleans their freedom of religion. Butler denied any clergyman the right to hold a prayer or day of fasting in support of the Confederacy. He arrested clergy who refused to pray for President Lincoln. He closed every Episcopalian Church in the city and shipped three Episcopalian ministers to New York under military escort. Butler also has had his problems with runaway slave. Instead of emancipating the slaves, as David Hunter did, Butler returned the slaves to their owners. Butler returned the slaves to their owners for two reasons. First, Butler, a lawyer and politician before the war, reasoned that he had no legal justification for retaining the runways. Second, he

did not have the supplies needed to feed, clothe or house the increasing number of slaves fleeing to New Orleans. Surprisingly, Butler remains in command in New Orleans and appears to enjoy the full support of the Lincoln Administration. In local political news, Congressman Roger Pryor who presents Powhatan in the Confederate Congress resigned his seat for a commission in the army. He was commission as Colonel of the 3rd Virginia Infantry. On month later, he was later promoted to Brig. General and given command of a brigade composed of Virginians, Alabamians and Floridians. His unit is serving on the Peninsula, and a special election will be needed to fill his vacant congressional seat.

hen Chuck and Debbie Zacharias, owners of Powhatan’s Skippers Creek Vineyards, decided to see if they could turn their passion for good wine into a viable business, they tried hard to make sure all of their bases were covered. Chuck, a cardiologist, took online courses on wine production through the University of California and both he and Debbie, a cardiac nurse, read every book they could find on the subject. They talked to experts, secured the help of Dr. Jeffrey Cooper of Cooper Vineyards, and met with wine consultant is Tom Payette In fact, the couple says the only thing they didn’t know as they embarked on their new adventure was just how much work they were in for. “We really didn’t realize it,” laughed Chuck, describing the hundreds of hours of mowing, spraying and vinetending it has taken to manage their five acres, which could potentially produce 40 tons of grapes. Compared to battling things like powdery mildew, he chuckled, “cardiology is easy.” Thankfully, the couple’s efforts appear to have paid off: on May 10, representatives from the Blue Moon Bottling Company arrived at the vineyard. Just a few hours later, the first 2,000 bottles of Skippers Creek Chardonnay sat corked, labeled and ready for purchase. There are still a few more regulatory hurdles left to negotiate before they are totally up and running, says the couple, but seeing their first finished bottles glinting in the sun marked a true milestone for their young business. “It was special,” said Debbie. “It made us realize: we’re here.” For more information on Skippers Creek Vineyards, visit the vineyard’s web site at skipperscreekvineyard.com or call (804) 598-7291.

Remembering those who gave all

By Roslyn Ryan Editor You may reach Roslyn at editor@powhatantoday.com

One of the recently-adopted traditions in my family—embraced at my mother’s insistence, at first, but now sincerely enjoyed by all of us—is attending a free Independence Day concert held every year in Richmond. One of the highlights of the show, put on by the Richmond Concert Band, is when the band launches into a medley of military anthems. As each one of the anthems is played—Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard—people who have served in that branch are invited to stand and be recognized. As many times as I’ve seen it, it gets me every time.

People of all ages rise to their feet. Most of them are in the crowd but there are always a handful of band members who stand up as well. It’s incredibly moving to see the pride on the faces of the veterans as they stand—some more easily than others— during their anthem. The fact that you could never have identified them as veterans, since they are dressed just like everyone else, reminds you that those who serve their country do not have special powers or wear capes. They are regular men and women, as fragile and human as the rest of us, but they have made sacrifices and met challenges many of us

likely can’t imagine. Seeing them standing there, you know each and every one of these proud veterans is standing up for so many others who aren’t there. I couldn’t say for sure, but it’s easy to believe that these men and women were thinking, as the music plays, of comrades who never made it home. As we all gather this Memorial Day, enjoying time with family and friends, let us all remember the people who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the love of their country. Make no mistake about it: this is the greatest country in the world. And we have them to thank for it.

USS Brementon. The other was a pilot on a landing craft of infantry. The sixth brother joined the army near the end of the war. He served in the occupation forces in Germany. It is hard for me to recall how much it affected my mother because my father took a leave of absence from his job in Richmond. At a special request from Mr. John Russell of Doyle & Russell Contracting Firm, he was sent to Norfolk to supervise the masonry construction of fleet supply buildings for the war purpose in 1942. Later, in 1943, he was asked to come back to Richmond to supervise the masonry on the McGuire Veterans Hospital. He was awarded an Army and Navy E Award for efficiency on those two jobs. It seems to me that somewhere there should be some recognition for the sacrifices that mothers, wives and sweethearts endured during the war years. The world seemed to be in better shape until June 1950. The Korean War broke out and I was drafted into the Army. I served in Korea from July 1951 until November 1952. This completed all seven sons serving their country.

THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS

Contributed report Connor Benway, Peter Cagnina, Sophie Duncan, John Chase Huddleston and Kaity McCullough emerged as the winning team in Junior Division at the recent 2012 Virginia Future Problem Solvers competition. Future Problem Solving is a competition in which students are challenged to develop solutions to some of the real world’s most vexing problems. This international program empowers students to do more than just wish for change – they can show the world how to make it happen. The problem solving process emphasizes rational thought, creativity, research and teamwork. This process is learned through a year-long educational program in which students have the opportunity to solve problems related to topics of global significance. Approximately 200,000 students from all 50 states, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and several other countries take part in this intellectually demanding program. In the 2012 state bowl, held in Suffolk, VA, teams were challenged to tackle the issue of “Trade Barriers.” Teams developed strategies and plans to resolve an international economic crisis stemming from one country’s abrupt reinstatement of protectionist policies and the resulting tailspin in international relations, trade, and global security. Past competitions have focused on developing solutions to issues such as Invasive Species, Cyber Conflict, Genetic Testing, and Emergency Planning. Connor, Peter, Sophie, John Chase and Kaity’s achievement came after a grueling day spent grappling with the problem, crafting their solution and then, perhaps most stressful of all, presenting their plan to the judges. Their win was an exceptional achievement, but this group of ambitious 5th graders hopes it’s just the start. The team is entitled to represent Virginia at the Future Problem Solvers International Bowl, hosted this year in Bloomington, IN. To make this dream a reality, the students, their parents and supporters are energetically engaged in raising funds … in the hope that they might be the team to most successfully solve the as-yet unannounced problem relating to the general topic of Pharmaceuticals. In the meantime, they have a more immediate problem to solve – getting to the Bowl - and like all aspects of problem solving, it’s going to take ingenuity, effort, and a willing community to make this plan work. The best way that you can support this ingenious group and its efforts to offer solutions to some of the all-too-real problems that challenge our society is by visiting www. gofundme.com/mhmls to learn more about the team and support them in funding their trip to the International finals in Bloomington, Indiana.

Capricorn, there are only a few more opportunities to seek a pay increase. Muster the strength to go into a supervisor’s office and make your case known.

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s baseball team didn’t feel much like Cinderella after an impossibly awful start to the 2012 season. The Knights, who returned most of the team that fell to Brunswick Academy in last year’s state final, dropped their first five games by a combined 36-15. Their lowest point occurred on April 18. Already saddled with a 2-8 record, the Knights promptly fell behind New Community High School 7-0 and appeared to be headed for another disappointing loss. Then something remarkable happened – and it didn’t involve a fairy godmother. BSH exploded for 16 unanswered runs to beat New Community, sparking a surge that saw the Knights win seven of nine games and claim the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament title. Still, they were seeded seventh out of eight teams for the

Virginia Independent Schools Division 3 tournament, and faced an uphill battle to make a third consecutive state final appearance. “We never should’ve been the 7 seed,” BSH first baseman T.J. Dobrucky said. “We should’ve been right up there

with the top teams. We just didn’t play like it.” The Knights entered the state tournament with a losing record (9-10), but stayed hot with a 3-1 upset of No. 2 North Cross and knocked off sixth-

On his 18th birthday, Nathaniel Settle gave his soon-tobe alma mater one last gift by doing just what he’s done for the last three years: everything in his power to help the Knights win a championship. Six months after he dragged a group of would-be tacklers from Greenbrier Christian for a 4-yard gain that clinched Blessed Sacrament Huguenot’s third consecutive Virginia Independent Schools Division 4 state football title, “Mr. Dependable” took the ball for his final high school start in Saturday’s VIS Division 3 state baseball final. Settle didn’t shy away from the assignment, even though he had thrown a complete game just three days earlier in the Knights’ state quarterfinal victory over North Cross. Working on just two days rest, Settle knew he wouldn’t have the usual pop on his fastball. But just as he did so many times on the football field, when he carried the ball

seeded Miller School by the same 3-1 score in Friday’s semifinals. When he woke up early Saturday to get prepared for the 11 a.m. state final matchup against top-seeded Southampton Academy, BSH coach James Poore couldn’t shake the feeling his team was going to win. His confidence only grew when junior Stephen Bendele gathered his teammates prior to the game and reminded them that “nobody expected us to be here.” “The kids were really loose. Nothing fazed them,” Poore said. The Knights’ relaxed approach paid dividends at the plate early in the state final. Tyler Dobrucky smacked a tworun double in the first inning, then Sam Drewicz scored on a wild pitch and T.J. Dobrucky added an RBI single as BSH extended its lead to 4-0 after just two at-bats. That was enough for senior Nathaniel Settle, who threw his second complete game in four days and limited Southampton’s powerful offense to six hits as the Knights claimed a 5-3 victory. “It sounds so weird being 12-10 and state champions,” said Drewicz, who scored two runs for BSH. Freshman second baseman Ryan Davoud also scored two runs and

followed Drewicz’s long triple with a sacrifice fly that plated a huge insurance run in the seventh inning. Poore brought up Davoud from the JV and inserted him into the starting lineup midway

through the season as part of his attempt to get the Knights out of their prolonged funk. Nearly out of options, Poore also made a point to step back and let his veteran players assume more responsibility for

leading the team and holding their teammates accountable. “Early in the season we were trying to force things,” he said. “I stopped yelling and started patting them on the back more. I decided to stop forcing and let them do what they were going to do because all I was doing was making things worse.” Having done things the hard way all season, nobody was surprised when the Knights nearly squandered all of their early four-run lead against Southampton. While Southampton starter Tonee Hill settled down and allowed only two baserunners from the

third through sixth innings, the Raiders got back in the game by scoring one run in each of the third, fourth and sixth. BSH, which had played sparkling defense in its first two state tournament games, hurt its cause with four errors. But while Southampton got the tying run on base in each of the final three innings, the Knights never lost their composure and made the plays when they had to have them. “It was really intense, but you can’t let it get to you,” T.J. Dobrucky said. “You can’t get lost in the moment or you’ll fall apart.” There was some sym-

metry in Saturday’s victory; the Knights began their eight-game win streak by beating Southampton, then ended their season by knocking off the Raiders again. “Hats off to our team. These guys played their hearts out,” Settle said. “We proved we deserved it.” Unlike the 2010 season, when a loaded BSH squad claimed its first state title as the No. 2 seed, neither Poore nor any of his players saw this one coming. “As a coach, you’re always teaching,” Poore said. “I learned more from this team than I have from any other team in my career.”

after two miscues on the same play in the fifth. Settle got out of that jam with back-to-back strikeouts, then promptly found himself back in trouble when Camp and Wesley Barnes opened the sixth inning with back-to-back singles. With no outs and runners on second and third, Settle allowed an RBI groundout by Matt Rose before striking out Sean Raulston to protect a 4-3 lead. “I had to block everything out so it was just me and the batter, Settle added. “I just had a really strong feeling that I was not going to give up this run. Even though his ace pitcher was closing in on 100 pitches through six innings of work, Poore had an equally strong belief that Settle was the right man to pitch the final inning.

Hey Eddie, The low tire pressure light on my ’07 Toyota pickup is on. I tried resetting the light a few times with the instructions from the owner’s manual, but it keeps coming back on. Could one of the wheel sensors be bad?

14.5 volts. If your alternator is charging more voltage than 14.8, this would explain your bulbs burning out. High voltage from your alternator is most likely due to a bad voltage regulator or a loose or broken ground wire. This may or many not be related to your accident.

Terry, If you have checked the pressure in all of your tires and they are correctly inflated? It is very possible a sensor could have failed. All your TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) sensors can be tested using a TPMS tester. Most all tire stores and many repair shops have them. One option you want to make sure you check before having the sensors tested is to make sure your spare is fully inflated. On your particular Toyota, the spare tire also has a sensor installed on it. Overlooking this tire could be to blame.

Hey Eddie, The speedometer on my 1998 Honda Accord started acting strange about two weeks ago. It jumps to 20 m.p.h. when I’m going really slow and shakes, then just stays at 20 to 25 m.p.h. no matter how fast I go. Do you think I need to replace the speedometer? Is this an expensive repair?

Terry Powhatan

Hey Eddie, After getting my 2003 Hyundai back from the body shop ( I had a small fender bender), I kept blowing headlights, dash lights and interior lights. After replacing all the bulbs they will start blowing again after about two weeks. The body shop and the insurance company said this is not related to my accident. I didn’t have this problem before. Any help would be great.

Greg Internet

Greg, If a wire is damaged and shorting to ground or to another wire, your car should be blowing fuses and not bulbs. I would have the charging system checked. The alternator should be putting out 13.8 to

Joy Internet Joy, Your repair shop should be able to check this problem without too much trouble. The speedometer assembly on your Honda would be fairly expensive if it checks out to be faulty. I believe they will probably find that the speed sensor in the transmission is the problem. Honda calls the sensor a speed signal generator. I’ve seen a number of these sensors fail on mid to late 1990’s Hondas. Of the two problems, the second will be the less expensive. actly what Settle wanted to throw. “I was thinking, ‘I want this to be my last pitch and I want to go out on my own terms,’ Settle said. “I just had a real strong desire to finish with a fastball. Clearly expecting another off-speed delivery, Camp was just a tick late and swung through Settle’s 118th and final pitch to end the game. “He’s clutch, Woody said of Settle. “I could tell he was a little rattled when they got runners on with their best hitter coming up, but he’s always able to deliver for us. Settle never lost his composure after the BSH defense sprung a few leaks in the middle of the game. Southampton scored an unearned run with the help of two errors in the fourth inning and got a runner to third

into the teeth of a defense that knew he was coming, the senior simply refused to let topseeded Southampton Academy beat him. “From the beginning, I was like, ‘I don’t care if my arm falls off, I’m finishing this game,’ Settle said with a smile after his complete-game sixhitter delivered a 5-3 victory and the second state baseball title in three years for BSH. It certainly wasn’t easy. After falling behind 4-0, Southampton Academy chipped away with runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings and left BSH coach James Poore pacing nervously in front of the visitors’ dugout at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights. Trailing by two runs in their final at-bat, the Raiders still never stopped battling. They moved the tying run to second base with two outs and their best hitter, senior catcher Carson Camp, coming to the plate. Settle coolly got ahead in the count with two of his typically nasty 12-6 curveballs. Camp stayed alive by just barely fouling off another. That’s when BSH catcher Greg Woody decided to mess with Camp’s head. Way ahead in the count, Woody signaled for a fastball. It was ex-

“He’s a winning kid, Poore added. “I said if he got into the seventh inning, pitch counts went out the window. It was his to finish. The fact that Settle was able to do exactly that came as no surprise to his best friend, senior first baseman T.J. Dobrucky. Settle and Dobrucky have played on five state championship teams (three in football, two in baseball) during their high school careers, but they played together even before they got to BSH. Teammates on a home-school baseball team as eighth-graders, Dobrucky recalled watching Settle consistently retiring much older hitters with a curveball that was devastating even back then. “I’ve seen him do this so many times, Dobrucky said. “I wanted the ball in nobody else’s hands. He knows how to get it done Asked where he got his dogged determination, Settle credited his parents for “always instilling in me a sense of hard work and dedication to do my best in everything I do. It’s a quality BSH will find harder to replace than Settle’s curveball. “Kids like Nathaniel just don’t come around that often, Poore said. “I’m really going to miss him.

was the first time a youth earned a perfect score in the rifles division in the last 15 years. Twelve counties from throughout Virginia were represented at the event which was held at Holiday Lake 4-H Center in Appomattox. According to Powhatan 4-H Shooting Club leader Frankie Barham, “This group of kids has worked harder than any team I’ve ever worked with. They really put the practice time in and came out winners. They should all be proud. Powhatan County brought 26 youth members and many adult volunteers and parents to the weekend event. Junior level competitors are between the ages of 9 and 13, while seniors are 14 to 19. Along with the archery and shooting events, the youth take a test which involves 50 wildlife identification questions and 50 on basic first aid and gun safety. The Powhatan teams included the following youth: Senior A Team: Jordan Hodge, Justin

Schaapman as second place senior; Justin Hoffman for third place senior; and Tripp Smith for third place junior. Local club members took individual honors in the following categories: Candice Bateman – first place senior, outdoor skills; Anthony Schaapman – first place senior, archery; Tripp Smith – first place junior, archery; Kelsey Kivikko – first place senior, hunter responsibility test; Amy Adcock – first place junior, hunter responsibility test; Jack Smith – first place junior in shotgun; Dana Thomas – first place senior in rifle; and Tripp Smith – first place junior in rifle.
