Influencing the GCC and the World.

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the all-round growth and development of the youth of a nation. In Bahrain, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, we are dedicated to provide all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities.

Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which have an immense traditional value, although we must not forget there are also other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us.

In today’s most challenging environment, such skills can only help individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages.

Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education.

For the above reasons, I warmly welcome the arrival of PowerUp, the first sports dedicated magazine to be based in Bahrain. It will be a fantastic tool for the people of Bahrain to view sports clubs and fixtures that are available on our island. It will expose them to new sports from around the world and introduce them to exciting existing sports they may wish to try.

In fact, sports have been proven to actually raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports help a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion.

Adrenaline Junkie This month saw us in a whirlwind of activities in preparation for triathlon season. We also celebrated Bahrain’s victories in the GCC games. We went to the BIC and had the ride of our lives (watch out for the GoPro video on Facebook). And we sought out other sports and institutions in our quest to provide you with the facts and the adrenaline to go out there and get fit.

The next two months will be our season Finale, and you can expect more adrenaline, and more powered up content. We will ride with you in the 2nd H.O.G. rally, walk you through the 2nd Diabetes Walk, and watch with amazement the FIA W.E.C. 6 Hours in Bahrain. We will chronicle all these adventures to reach out to more and more people, building a community of sports and fitness minded enthusiasts.

Bahrain RFC sting Kuwait Scorpions

Toby Borrow, Bahrain Rugby Football Club’s Number Eight scored a second-hat trick in as many games yesterday as he helped Bahrain RFC’s first XV to a bonus point, 36-10 victory over the Kuwait Scorpions in Saar.

The Scorpions traveled to Bahrain with a limited bench still buoyed by victories from their opening two fixtures against Doha IIs and Muscat. However, they incurred an early penalty from the opening of the game. From this point on SPORTS & FITNESS

The lead was extended a short time later in almost carbon copy fashion as Borrow touched down for his second and once again Radley nailed the conversion from out wide to make it 14-3.

The events followed on in this manner until the final play to leave a score of 36-10 with another intrepid win from the Bahrain RFC’s.

Top badminton clash in Bahrain

Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam, ranked world’s number 35th in badminton will play in two major badminton events scheduled to take place over the next two weeks at the Shaikh Khalifa Sports City in Isa Town.

Around 200 players from 31 countries, many in the top 100, will be taking part in the Victor-Rayan Sports Bahrain International Series 2015 from October 28 to November 1 and the Bahrain International Challenge 2015 from November 3 to 7. Both events are part of the Bahrain International Badminton Festival.

Other top ranked players include RMV Gurusaidutt from India (Rank 41), Spaniard Pablo Abian (Rank 44), Singaporean Zi Liang Derek Wong (Rank 47), and

Russian Vladimir Malkov (Rank 48).

In the women’s division, 17 of the world’s top-ranked athletes will make the trip to Bahrain. The top attraction will be Spain’s Beatriz Corrales (Rank 25), followed by eight other players inside the Top 50 like Americans Iris Wang (Rank 30), Rong Schafer (Rank 33), and Jamie Subhandi (Rank 43) respectively.

Other top 100 players include Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri (Rank 34) and Petya Nedelchava (Rank 47), Thai Nitchaon Jindapol (Rank 40), and Russian Ksenia Polikarpova (Rank 46), and Neslihan Yigit (Rank 50) from Turkey.

Bahrain triumphs on World Endurance Championship

HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, president of Bahrain Olympic Committee and captain of Bahrain Royal Endurance Team, proclaimed that Bahrain’s victory in both individual and team events at the World Endurance Championship for Young and Junior Riders in Chile will motivate more Bahraini riders to strive for glory in the international level.

Bahrain’s top rider, Fahad Al Khatri won first place in the individual category finishing the five stages of the 120 km.

Bahrain’s Shaikh Salman vows to clean up FIFA

Shaikh Salman, President of the Asian Football Confederation since 2013, has vowed to clean up Fifa’s reputation. Fifa’s reputation was left in tatters after a muchpublicised spate of corruption charges, when seven top officials were arrested in Zurich.

Speaking to the BBC, Salman said that if elected he will not take a salary.

He added that he will back the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to go ahead in Russia and Qatar respectively. He also said that he supports limiting the Fifa presidency

“It’s not just damaging me, it’s damaging the people and the country,” he added.

“These are false, nasty lies that have been repeated again and again in the past and the present.”

Zallaq Youth Centre wins 3rd edition of Indoor Soccer Tournament

Youth and Sports Minister Hisham bin Mohammed Al Jowder congratulated the Board of Directors and Members of Zallaq Youth Centre on winning the third edition of HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad’s Indoor Soccer Tournament for Youth Centres organized by the ministry, praising the team’s performance level and huge efforts undertaken by its footballers.

Zallaq played Salmabad on the grounds of Khalifa Sport City Stadium yesterday. Salmabad was declared as the runner-up following the results of the final match while Karana got third place. Albanki emerged as the best scorer, while Bakheet and Jameel emerged as the best player and the best goalkeeper respectively. Halati Alneim and Alsutah Youth Center got the Ideal Team Award for great organization.

The Khalid Bin Hamad Youth League for Futsal, was held for 35 days under the auspices of the National Bank of Bahrain (Gold Sponsor). HH Shaikh Khalid believes that the success of the third version of the Youth League will enable athletic gathering which will help expand the role of youth centers as well as put a premium on youth participation in sports.

2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, Al Gharrafa Sports Cub, Doha, Qatar The Doha Open will be the eighth Open event on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 2015 calendar in a season that extends from late April to mid-December. It will be the second after the FIVB World Tour Season Final, with points from the tournament going towards the 2016 ranking.

The pre-Olympic 2015 season includes five FIVB Grand Slams, a new FIVB Swatch Beach Volleyball Major Series, a special FIVB Swatch Beach Volleyball World Tour season Final in the United States and six FIVB Opens.

Five Grand Slams, which offer $800,000 in prize money each, will also take place on the road to the World Tour Season Final. A new innovative and dynamic FIVB Swatch Beach Volleyball Major Series including three tournaments offering $800,000 each in prize money to complete the schedule. Six Opens offering $75,000

Featuring both the Bahrain Rotax Mojo Max Challenge and the SWS Bahrain Championship, the Karting sprints are one of the major highlights of the BIC calendar.

2 – 6 pm, Dohat Arad Park, Muharraq The Beat Diabetes Walk will span approximately 3 kilometers. There’s also a host of complimentary fun-filled activities, including special fitness activities by Fitness First like flash mobs, spot fitness challenges and dance routines. Children will be kept entertained at a children’s zone featuring face painting, balloon twisting, stilt walkers and inflatable slides. In addition, an on-site DJ and live entertainment acts will help create a carnival atmosphere at the walk. Stands serving healthy snacks will also be set up at the venue.

ebastian Kienle is a German long-distance triathlete who won the 2012-2015 Ironman 70.3 World Championships.

Four years in a row and one would think that this formidable athlete would finally slow down. But his admirable discipline, sustained and strategic goals, as well as his intense athleticism all combined to create a force to reckon with in the triathlete community.

The 30 year old completed the 2.4 mile ocean swim, 112 mile bike leg, and marathon run in eight hours, 14 minutes, 18 seconds. He beat his fellow Endurance 13 teammate, Ben Hoffman, by over a minute, while their teammate Jan Frodeno came in third in the race.

To quote Kienle, “I never thought I was going to win this”, but to be honest, we always knew he had an edge.

The following year, in 2013, he posted somewhat lackluster results during the season but was still able to defend his Ironman 70.3 World title by winning. He turned out the second fastest bike split of the day to help him win by over two minutes to fellow Endurance 13 teammate, Terenzo Bozzone. Kienle had a stellar year in 2014 winning the Ironman European Championships in Frankfurt and the World Championships in Hawaii.

Bahrain bags gold in the GCC Games!

T

he GCC games started in 2011 as the first multisport event for the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC).

The first GCC games were held in Bahrain from October 11 to 22, 2011 with 1,500 athletes participating in 11 sports.

This year’s games were held in Dammam, Saudi Arabia with Bahrain participating in all 11 sports and presenting a united front. 170 of the country’s finest athletes came together for the GCC games.

Bahrain finished fourth

overall in the medal table.

Saudi Arabia ended the games on top with 101 medals (52 gold, 30 silver, and 19 bronze). They were followed by the UAE with 69 medals (26-19-24), and Qatar with 50 medals in second and third places respectively.

Looking at the exceptional contributions of the athletes in the individual sports, it can be said that Bahrain has outdone itself in the GCC games this year, and the best is yet to come!

Athletics Bahraini athletes have long contributed to putting Bahrain on the world sports map, and this year is no exception.

Al Hassan Al Abassi raced to victory in the men’s 10,000 m final in the inaugural day of the athletic events at Prince Nayen bin Abdulaziz Sports City Stadium. The Bahraini athlete clocked 29 minutes and 30.81 seconds to complete the race in first place finishing ahead of his main opponents Tareq Al Amri (30:25.10) and Hassan Jamaan (31:50.87), both from Saudi Arabia.

Abbas Abubaker then notched Bahrain’s second medal of the day by coming second in the men’s 400m race in 64.72 seconds. Saudi Arabia’s Yousef Masrahi (45.57) bagged the gold, while the bronze went to Ahmed Mubarak of Oman (47.24) Later on, Abdulrahman Khamis also managed to get a podium spot for the kingdom in the long final jump, where he scored 7.60 metres to win the competition’s bronze medal. Saudi Arabia’s Ahmed Mohammed managed 7.59 metres to win the gold medal.

Benson Kiplagat and Albert Rop raced to victories in the 1,500 m and the 5,000 m respectively, while Yaquob Salem (200 m), and Birhanu Yamataw (5,000 m) bagged the silver medals for Bahrain. Kiplagat, who secured the 800 m bronze, was in top form clinching the 1,500 m gold in three minutes and 51.51 seconds.

Bahrain’s national judo team began their quest winning three bronze medals at Prince Saud bin Jalawi Sports City’s gym.

Fadel Abbas, Ali Al Shaikh, and Mahmood Al Aradi came third in their respective weight categories, thus boosting Bahrain’s overall medal table.

Abbas opened Bahrain’s account in this discipline by securing the last podium award in the judo 100kg event, losing to Saudi Arabia’s Rakan Zaidan, then to Qatari Reda Nafoori, before beating UAE’s Mansoor Al Suwaidi.

Later on, Al Shaikh was third in the under 66-kg. Saudi Arabia’s Sulaiman Hammad and Qatari Mohammed Rabahi were first and second respectively.

Al Aradi rounded off the day winning Bahrain’s third bronze in the under 73 kg. Qatari Murad Zamouri bagged the gold, while the silver was taken by Mohammed Al Harbi of Saudi Arabia.

Bahrain swimmers claimed three gold and one silver medal on the GCC Swimming Championships in Doha.

Bahrain’s first gold medal came through Ahmed Abdulnabi in the 50 metre backstroke competition for 10-year olds. He won the event in 38.40 seconds.

Khalid Abdulla Baba won Bahrain’s second gold medal in the men’s 200m butterfly in 2:17:13 minutes. He was followed by Khalid Nazal Al Khalifa of Saudi Arabia while Nedal Sulaiman Al Hawasi of Oman was third.

The third gold medal for Bahrain came through Farhan Saleh Faraj, in the men’s 100 meters freestyle.

He won the event in 53.37 seconds. He was followed by UAE’s Mohammed Jassim Al Maheeri while Omar Hashim Yousif of Qatar was third.

Weight lifting Abdulla Al Mejdami gave Bahrain three bronze medals in the clean, jerk, and total in the 56kg event of the weightlifting championship at Prince Saudi Bin Jalawi gym in Al Raka. Saudi Arabia’s Mansoor Al Saleem took the gold, while UAE’s Ahmed Jassim bagged the silver.

Three of Bahrain’s finest weightlifters also competed in the other weight categories.

They made three wins in as many matches. They edged host Saudi Arabia 3-1 (25-17, 29-31, 25-20, 25-19) in a 75 minute match to closer towards retaining the title they won in the first edition of the games held in Bahrain in 2011.

Heart of ahrain’s enthusiasm with golf is evidenced in the Royal Golf Club, home to Bahrain’s only 18 hole, par 72 championship standard golf course and a par 3 9-hole course, both designed by golfing legend Colin Montgomerie. The course hosted the European Tour’s inaugural Volvo Golf Championships tournament in 2011 and the maiden Bahrain invitational in 2012.

The club is managed by Troon, the leader in upscale golf course management, and was named Troon’s 2013 Facility of the Year.

Golf may be regarded as intrinsically daft. It is just hitting a ball with a stick, however, golf is a very popular sport.

Golf is a club and ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. It does not require a standardized playing area. It is played on a course with an arranged progression of either nine or 18 holes. Each hole on the course must contain a tee box to stand from, and a putting green containing the

actual hole. A tee is a small peg that can be used to elevate the ball slightly above the ground up to a few centimeters high.

Tees help reduce the interference of the ground or grass on the movement of the club, making the ball easier to hit. Each hole on a course is unique in its specific layout and arrangement. The levels of grass are varied to increase difficulty or to allow for putting in the case of the green.

Golf is played for the lowest number of strokes by an individual, known as stroke play, or the lowest score on the most individual holes in a round by an individual or team, known as match play.

Stroke play is the most commonly seen format at all levels.

The modern game of golf originated in 15th century Scotland where the first written record of golf is of James II banning the game in 1457, as an unwelcome distraction to learning archery. James IV lifted the ban in 1502 when he became a golfer himself. Golf clubs became recorded in 1503-1504 with the Old Course at St. Andrews, a links course dating back to before 1574, considered a site of pilgrimage.

I always say there are so many ways to “sneak in a workout” within home chores or play time with kids.

One solution to help the ones who always find excuses not to squeeze in a workout is to Track Your Activity Levels “If you don’t measure it, it doesn’t exist”. It might seem like an exaggerated point, but this old saying really has some truth to it, especially when it comes to exercise. Using the new tracking gadgets could be ideal because measuring activity levels (and ideally keeping notes on your progress) can help you to stay on track and realize when you’re slipping before you’ve completely lost the habit.

he triathlon can be considered one of the more strenuous sports and is reserved only for serious athletes taking years and years of commitment and discipline to make it to the top. HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, founder of the legendary Bahrain Endurance 13, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee President says “Endurance racing has noble qualities that transcend the sport. To be successful at a marathon or triathlon, whether you’re in the front or back of the field, you need to commit to something. It takes hard work, dedication.

During the race, it’s a true metaphor for life. You go through highs and lows and the ultimate goal is happiness and finishing”.

both in the junior and open competition. After a shoulder injury forced her to retire from competitive swimming, she encountered multisport and completed a few Olympic distance triathlons. She did her first Ironman in under 10 hours and qualified for the Ironman World Championship in Kona.

She then had a stint as a cyclist on the Swiss national team but gravitated back towards triathlon as it provided her more satisfaction as a competitor.

She soon went professional and quickly racked up success in 70.3 and Ironman racing.

She has consistently been on the podium of multisport events and is always one to watch in any race. Caroline says “All our dreams can come true if we have the

courage to pursue them”.

Despite her imposing stature, she’s a 5’10’’, the Warrior Princess also has a soft side, doing arts and crafts when she isn’t running or cycling her way to victory.

She’s also considered one of the friendliest athletes in the circuit, and always spends plenty of time with her fans posing for photos, answering questions, and signing autographs. Her biggest vice is chocolate and coffee and if she weren’t an athlete, she’d be running a little café’ shop right next to the beach where she would go for long bike rides in the evenings.

Daniela Ryf Champion, Ironman 70.3 Kona 2015

Daniela’s home away from home is a holiday paradise: the Gold Coast of Australia.

She’s often amid tourists as she works towards becoming the fastest triathlete in Olympic distance.

Daniela is a mainstay on the ITU circuit and represented Switzerland at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. In 2014, she burst onto the long-course scene in a big way after coming under Brett Sutton’s tutelage and shifting her focus to half-Ironman and Ironman racing. She claimed the victory in her maiden Ironman, became Ironman 70.3 World Champion, and ended the year with a stellar Ironman runner-up showing at her first Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, leading for most of the day on the back of a strong bike and split run.

Daniela wore this year’s leafy crown in Kona as she dominated her very first Ironman World Championship victory. At only her second time racing in Kona,

Switzerland’s Daniela Ryf crushed the Kona course with over a 13-minute lead on the entire field, winning in 8 hours, 57 minutes.

As the pre-race favourite in this year’s Ironman 70.3 World Championship, the pressure was on for Daniela to improve on her secondplace finish from 2014.

She did just that, turning in strong performances across swim, bike, and run to dominate the race in under nine hours. With this victory, she became the second woman to earn the 70.3 and Ironman World titles in the same year (Leanda Cave was first in 2012).

She has also won the 2014 and 2015 Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

Daniela represented Switzerland in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in triathlon, placing 7th and 40th in those competitions. In 2010, Daniela placed third in the inaugural 2010 ITU Sprint Distance Triathlon World Championships.

In Bahrain, there is a large number of motorcycle enthusiasts just raring to set the road on fire.

oad racing, offroad racing, dirt bike racing, track racing, a lot of action happens on two wheels both on circuits or open courses, through the streets of many cities, and on tracks.

The love for speed, adventure, and rebellion has propelled both teenagers (who all emulated James Dean, with the leather jacket and the attitude) to older people (complete with beards and tattoos) to ride.

Motorcycle racing has also completely eradicated gender boundaries as both men and women hop on that bike on the road to adrenaline.

A century ago, the Wright Brothers flew their first airplanes and Model T’s roared off Henry Ford’s assembly line, it was not long before this all this technology paved the way for motorbikes to come careening to the cities of the future.

racing and moving at different speeds. Now speed was a cylinder away and it shocked and awed the imaginations of many.

In 1901, the Hendee Manufacturing Company introduced the 1.75 horsepower, single cylinder Indian in 1901. HarleyDavidson followed in 1903.

It was not long before racing ensued. Early contests were held on horse-racing ovals and bicycle velodromes, but by 1909, wooden tracks built specifically for cars and motorcycles began to appear in Los Angeles and elsewhere.

It was in 1911 that a livery worker named Ashley Franklin van Order moved from Illinois to Southern California so he could ride his motorcycle year-round. He took a job selling Harley-Davidson’s, but his racing career was cut short soon afterward by an accident and his wife threatening to leave him if he ever hopped on a bike again. and compelling visual record of early motorcycle racing.

Early bike designs were lethal to the drivers. The bikes were designed to run fast, and that was about it: they had to be towed behind other motorcycles to get them started, and they had no brakes. The tracks, called motordromes, came

in various sizes—a circuit of a mile and a quarter occupied the current site of the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills—and were made of lengths of 2 by 2, and 2 by 4 lumber with rough-cut surfaces. The turns were severely banked allowing riders to reach speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. Crashes were frequent and horrific— riders who went down faced being impaled by splinters. Spectators shared in the risk, which oftentimes proved fatal. They peered down from the lip of the track, often in harm’s way.

On one particularly black day in 1912, six observers were killed along with Eddie Hasha and another rider at a motordrome in Newark, New Jersey, when Hasha

lost control of his bike and slammed into the crowd. Yet people continue to attend these races. [Smithsonian Magazine, Smithsonian.com] The carnage, according to the Smithsonian, was appalling. Newspapers began referring to motordromes as “murderdromes” and local governments closed some tracks. Race officials and the motorcycle manufacturers that sponsored racing teams tried to implement measures to slow down the bikes, but that went nowhere. By the early 1930’s board-track motorcycle racing was over but it left behind a legacy of a time when people were fascinated by the idea of going faster than they ever have.

With the institutionalization of motorbike racing within the FIM (Federation

Internationale’ de Motocyclisme), motorbike racing is fast gaining the prestige and glitz that it enjoyed long before.

There are four types of motorcycle racing according to the FIM. The first is Road Racing, which is the sport of racing motorcycles on a tarmac. Races can take place either on purpose-built racing circuits or on closed public roads.

Grand Prix motorcycle racing refers to the premiere category of motorcycle road racing. The motorcycles used for this type of racing are prototype machines not based on any production motorcycle.

Superbike racing is the category of motorcycle road racing that employs modified production motorcycles.

Superbike racing motorcycles must have four stroke engines of between 800 cc and 1200 cc for twins (V-twin engine), and between 750 cc and 1000 cc for four cylinder machines.

The motorcycles must maintain the same profile as their roadgoing counterparts.

The overall appearance, seen from the front, rear and sides, must correspond to that of the bike used for public roads even though the mechanical elements of the engine have been modified (homologation).

Supersport racing is another genre of motorcycle road racing that employs modified production motorcycles. To be eligible for Supersport racing, a motorcycle must have a four-stroke engine of between 400 and 600 cc for four-cylinder machines, and between 600 and 750 cc for twins, and must satisfy the FIM homologation requirements.

Supersport regulations are much tighter than Superbikes.

Supersport machines must remain largely as standard, while engine tuning is possible but tightly regulate

Ballooning

Although not yet established in Bahrain, here’s something for extreme air enthusiasts to look forward to: hot-air ballooning. Hot air ballooning is as the name suggests flying through the air in a

giant balloon. This sport is so attractive to so many people because of the exceptional quiet that being up high brings (except of course when the propane burners are firing), the bird’s eye view, and the peace and contemplation of looking down on

landwalkers.

The hot air balloon is the oldest successful humancarrying flight technology.

Since the balloon moves with the direction of the winds, passengers feel absolutely no wind, except for brief periods during the flight when the balloon climbs or descends into air currents of different direction or speed. Hot air balloons are able to fly to extremely high altitudes.

A hot air balloon consists of a bag called an envelope that is capable of containing heated air. Suspended beneath is a gondola or wicker basket, which carries passengers, and usually a source of heat.

Most hot air balloons are launched during the cooler hours of the day, at dawn, or three hours before sunset. At these times of day, the winds are typically light making for easier launch and landing of the balloon. Flying at these times also avoid thermals, which are vertical air currents caused by ground heating that make it more difficult to control the balloon. In the extreme, the downdrafts associated with strong thermals can exceed the ability of a balloon to climb and can thus force a balloon into the ground.

Since piloting a balloon requires some effort (licensing and purchase of equipment), many people opt to purchase a balloon flight from a company offering balloon rides. Many balloon festivals are already established in many parts of the world and are a great way to see hot air balloons close up, as well as being an enjoyable family outing.

Balloon festivals usually include other activities like live entertainment, amusement rides, and concerts.

Karting

Kart-racing or karting is a variant of open-wheel motorsport with small, open, four-wheeled vehicles called karts, go-karts, or gearbox/ shifter karts depending on the design. They are usually raced on scaled-down circuits.

Karting is considered as the stepping stone to the higher ranks of motorsports and is generally considered as the most economic form of motorsport available on four wheels.

As a pastime, it can be performed by almost anybody, and as a motorsport in itself, is one of the sports regulated by FIA, permitting licensed racing for anyone from the age of eight onwards.

Go-karts are the motorless models of high-powered racing machines. Some types of Go-karts, like Superkarts, are able to beat racing cars on long circuits. Superkarts can reach speeds exceeding 260 kmph (160mph).

Racing karts use small 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines.

Most of them are single seater but recreational models can sometimes accommodate passengers. Karts often use sturdy chassis completed with dedicated bodywork to ensure driver safety. Most enterprises like the BIC, offer use an “Arrive and Drive” format which provide customers with all the safety gear (helmets, gloves, and driver outfits), where necessary and allow them to

show up any time to race at a reasonable price, without the hassle of owning one’s own equipment and gear.

The early days of kartracing saw karts that were direct-driven (requiring push starts), but the inconvenience of that setup soon led to the centrifugal clutch for the club level class karts. In some countries, go-karts can be licensed for use on public roads with certain restrictions.

For example, in the European Union, a go-kart on the road needs head light (high/ low beam), tail lights, a horn, indicators, and a maximum speed of 20hp.

There are three racing formats that karting follows: sprint, endurance, and speedway. Sprint racing takes place on dedicated kart circuits resembling small road courses, with left and right turns. Tracks range from ¼ mile (400 meters) to over 1 mile (1,600 meters in length).

Endurance races last for an extended period, ranging up to 30 minutes or up to 24 hours or more, for one or more drivers. In general, consistency, reliability, and pit strategy is of greater importance than all-out speed. Speedway racing takes place on asphalt or clay oval

tracks which are normally between 1/6 and ¼ mile long. Tracks primarily consist of two straights and four left turn corners, few tracks are symmetric and often the shape parallels that of an egg or a tri-oval.

Kitesurfing

Daredevils from all over Bahrain flock to Amwaj Islands on windy afternoons to kite surf. According to Ryan Hughes, owner and extreme sports advisor of Skateshack, the best place to kitesurf in Amwaj is on the north of the islands near Talaisland. It has the biggest place to safely set up and launch the kites.

The wind generally comes from the north and northwest and is an onshore wind.

This means that if anyone has any problem with their equipment, they won’t need a rescue boat and won’t get blown out to the sea.

Kitesurfing is a surface water sport combining elements of wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics into one extreme sport. A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water on a kiteboard similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard with or without footstraps or bindings.

Kitesurfing started in 1903 with an aviation pioneer named Samuel Cody who developed “man-lifting kites” and succeeded in crossing the English channel in a small collapsible canvas boat powered by a kite. In the late 1970’s, the development of Keviar (which was then called Spectra) flying lines and more controllable kites with improved efficiency contributed to practical kite traction. In 1978, Ian Day’s “FlexiFoil” kite-powered tornado catamaran exceeded 40 km/h.

Kitesurfing season in Bahrain runs from November to July usually, but there are usually a few windy days throughout the summer also.

Though there are no full time trainers, there are about five qualified kitesurfing instructors who teach in their free time depending on the wind. As it is a potentially

dangerous sport, people should spend some contact hours with an instructor before endeavouring to fool around in the open water.

From a handful of women playing football in the island to increasing participation in women’s football, Deena Rahman continues to be the driving force of Tekkers Academy Bahrain.

ou’re excelling at a sport that is very traditionally male, in terms of it being a rough and tumble contact sport. How does this affect the way people view you as a female athlete?

Football is no longer a male only sport. More and more females are playing across the globe and in the US it is the highest participation sport for girls. More and more countries are adopting the sport in its female form. While it is a contact sport, it is not rough and tumble – it requires strength, but also skills such as balance, technique and speed of thought and actions as well. I think and hope that people see me as a female footballer and coach who can inspire their daughters

to play sports and retain their feminity, and be a role model to them. I hope that they also see that a woman can coach and develop males to a high

level in the game as I have done over the years.

How do you think sports enables women and especially young girls to achieve their dreams?

Sport is something that everybody can do, with the right amount of work and determination. Not everybody is going to win the world cup, but everybody can play and work hard to be as good as they can be. Sports is a mirror of life. Success is directly related to the work and effort expended to achieve your dreams. Women now have the opportunity to play and compete in sports in the same way as their male counterparts have done for years.

By encouraging everybody who wanted to, to come and play – everybody was welcome, nobody was turned away. We then met a terrific person and player called Rama Salem who loves football and encouraged her friends to join. We then found out that there were pockets of women all over the country playing with their friends and invited them to join our league. The outcome was 8 teams of ladies playing football in a competitive

I am not sure that I am changing the face of football in the Kingdom. I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to play for the National team, and used this higher profile to encourage girls and women to take up football. I have had, and still have, some amazingly talented girls that I hope that I have helped become better players. One thing that I am particularly proud of doing was starting the first Women’s Football League in Bahrain, which the BFA has now taken over and will hopefully lead it to even greater achievements.

How did you grow the

environment every week!

For our girls teams I offered girls training sessions, and by encouraging an’ everybody can play’ approach, it ensures that everybody gets to play in games as well as improve their skills in practice sessions.

Now some of the older girls are in the Ladies Leagues and playing in the National structure, which I am very proud of!

How does the role of coach differ from that of the pro-athlete? Which role do you prefer?

I loved being a professional player. I don’t think that there is anything better than playing competitive sports in front of a crowd of people and excelling at something that you love. I was lucky enough to win every honour in the English Women’s game, play for England and make some lifelong friends. Being a professional is a full time job, but an enjoyable one! Being a coach is very different. You have to think about every individual, rather than just

We started Tekkers ( which is an English footballers ‘slang’ word meaning technique) because we felt that there was a need for an Academy which offered very professional football coaching for the very high achievers, alongside a soccer school for the players who love the game but want to play at a recreational level. We hope that we have achieved this balance. Many players have already made the move from the recreational to the more serious approach, and we have seen some improvements in the players already. We provide matches against some of the countries’ best clubs, and also play in local leagues where the emphasis is on participation and involvement.

We want every parent to want to sign their child up to a Tekkers session because it is the best training experience that they can get. We want to introduce different sports – we have already done a multi sport holiday camp which was a great success and have introduced an adults healthy lifestyle club which is preparing to run in this years Marathon relay under the Tekkers Trim name.

The archipelagic range of Bahrain ensures that watersports can be done year round. But have you tried kayaking?

Kayaking for Beginners

K

ayaks, first built by the Inuits in North America, were used to hunt on inland islands.

Estimated to be at least 4,000 years old, kayaks in their earliest forms were made from stitched seal or other animal skins or other animal skins over a frame made from whalebone. These vessels got their buoyancy with seal bladders filled with air, tucked into the fore and aft sections of the kayak.

The main purpose for creating the kayak, which literally translates to “hunter’s

boat”, was for hunting and fishing. The kayak’s stealth capabilities allowed for the hunter to sneak up behind animals on the shoreline, and successfully catch their prey. By the mid 1800’s German and French men began kayaking for sport.

Kayak races were introduced to the Berlin Olympic games in 1936. Now, more than 10 whitewater kayaking events are featured in the Olympics.

Kayaking is distinguished from canoeing by the sitting position of the paddler and the number of blades on the paddle. The modern kayak is a low-to-the-water, canoe-like boat in which the paddler sits

facing forward, legs in front, using a double-bladed paddle to pull front-to-back on one side and then the other in rotation. Most kayaks have closed decks, although sit-ontop and inflatable kayaks are growing in popularity as well.

Built with fiberglass, wood, rotomolded plastic or Kevlar, are designed for recreation in a number of different water environments, including lakes, whitewater rivers, and seas. At the heart of kayaking is paddling, but there’s a lot more to learn about the techniques and equipments to ensure beginners are safe, aware, and enjoying themselves.

Kayaking Equipment Kayaks

Kayaks can typically hold one to three paddlers. Depending on the type of material, prices for the vessels can vary greatly. Plastic is usually the cheapest, with kayaks of this material ranging from $250 to $1,500; while Kevlar, considered lighter and stronger than other kayak materials, is the priciest, costing up to $4,000 for the Kevlar kayak. Built for specific environments, there are a variety of these boats available: whitewater kayaks, surf kayaks, racing kayaks, sea or touring kayaks, and hybrids, often labeled as recreational kayaks.

Each design has its specific advantage including performance, maneuverability, stability, and paddling style. For instance, sea kayaks typically have longer bodies, so they can cover more distance while whitewater kayaks are made of high-impact plastic so they can bounce off rocks while incurring less damage. Siton-top kayaks are the most commonly sold and ideal for beginners because they are stable, easy to get in and out of, and used for recreational paddling and fishing.

Because sit-on-tops have wider beams, it’s easy to keep upright while also staying stable.

Each material also has its specific advantage, including strength, durability, portability, flexibility, and resistance to ultraviolet and storage requirements. For example, wooden kayaks can be created from kits or built by hand. Stitch and glue, plywood kayaks can

be lighter than any other material except skin-onframe. Inflatable kayaks, made from lightweight fabric, can be deflated and easily transported and stored, and considered to be remarkably tough and durable compared to some hard-sided boats.

Paddles

The second set of essentials for kayaking is an off-set paddle where the paddle blades are tilted to help reduce wind resistance while the other blade is being used in the water. These vary in length and also shape depending on the intended use, height of the paddler, and often, the paddler’s preference.

A big distinction between kayaking and canoeing is the paddle.

Canoes use single bladed paddles while kayaks use two-bladed paddles.

Wider and taller kayaks require longer paddles.

If you are shorter, lighter paddles might be ideal to not overexert yourself. In addition, blades come in a variety of shapes. Wider blades give you more

acceleration but also face more resistance. Narrower blades use less effort per stroke but require more strokes. Blades also come flat or curved. While flat blades are generally cheaper, curved ones increase the power of each stroke. Some blades are feathered, meaning they’re offset at an angle, cutting down on wind resistance.

Like with a kayak, finding the right paddle requires trying out different types. If you’re taking lessons, ask your instructor to guide you.

Learning how to Kayak

To learn basic paddling and safety techniques, it is best to find a certified instructor. If you take lessons, you won’t need to invest in equipment initially since the instruction fee usually covers equipment and you will have a better sense of what to buy should you decide to purchase any.

Be sure to begin in a safe, calm environment, not the rapids or the turbulent sea. You’ll need to learn how to get in and out of the kayak and basic paddling strokes before taking on difficult environments.

Getting in and out of a kayak

This can be a challenging and awkward first lesson, but the secret is to keep your weight low and centered.

If you’re getting in from a dock, hold on to the dock edge while putting your feet into the cockpit. Continue stabilizing yourself by grabbing onto the dock and lowering yourself onto the kayak. To exit, it’s the same thing in reverse. Lean against the dock. Pull your knees out, against the cockpit, and slide out onto a sitting position on the dock.

Kayaking Activities

Because of its range and adaptability, kayaks can be useful for other outdoor activities such as diving, fishing, wilderness exploration, and search and rescue.

Diving

Kayak diving is a type of recreational diving where the divers paddle to a diving site in a kayak carrying all their gear to the place they want to dive. The range can be several kilometers along the coastline from the launching point to a place where access would be difficult from the shore, although the sea is sheltered. It is a considerably cheaper alternative to using a motor-powered boat, as well as combining the experience of sea kayaking at the same time. Kayak diving gives the diver independence from dive-boat operators, while allowing dives at sites which are too far to comfortably swim.

Fishing

Kayak fishing is fishing from a kayak. The kayak has long been a means of approaching easily spooked fish like the kobia and the flounder. It has gained popularity in recent times due to its being environmentally friendly.

In fact, one can trace Bahrain’s oceanography back to the ancient myths of Uruk, where the legendary king Gilgamesh swam nine days and nine nights into the ocean and retrieved the plant of immortality. He surfaced on the land of Dilmun which is now present-day Bahrain. Taking a bath before reclaiming his throne in the city of Uruk, he laid the plant down beside a still pool and when he resurfaced, the plant was gone. In its place was a snakeskin as the snake ate the plant of immortality giving it the ability to cast off its skin and grow a new one.

Experienced freedivers can often go as deep as scuba divers, and sometimes deeper. Recreational freediving is practiced by many people from the average snorkeler to the professional freediver and is frequently practiced in freshwater springs due to excellent visibility and underwater caverns.

C02 is the gas that causes us to want to breathe, so by removing this gas from our bloodstream, you start the dive with a very low C02 content, this then tricks us into thinking we don’t really need to breathe. However, the hyperventilation hasn’t increased our O2 levels to compensate and our O2 levels are decreasing just as quickly as normal, but without the safety mechanism of the high CO2 “need to breathe” reflex. So this leaves the diver in a very dangerous position, as they continue their dive but without any strong desire to return to the surface. Hyperventilation will actually reduce the amount of available oxygen to your muscles and organs.

S

wimming superstars have captured our imagination for the way they ambidextrally move on land and water.

Proof of this is Olympian Michael Phelps, who has made swimming a very, very cool sport. Swimming has completely fascinated people even in the earliest times.

In fact, Egyptians already

have a hieroglyphic symbol for swimming as far back as 2500AD. But it’s precisely because of the fact that many people are afraid of the water, more so the open waters of the sea, and so many people don’t actually know how to swim; that we, land animals look at swimmers with high esteem.

Many of us learn as young children to never go to a pool, lake, river, or ocean to avoid drowning or sea creatures that

bite and sting. Over the years, we’ve just forgotten how to swim.

The archipelago of Bahrain just invites people to reconnect back to the sea, where we all came from, and from which we are all made. (The body is composed of 70% water). One of the ways in which individuals can take the plunge is to join a swimming group.

The Bahrain Elite Swimming Team (BEST) is not just any swimming group. It engages and develops youth in Bahrain physically and mentally in swim sports to compete regionally and internationally. The BEST team recruits top talents in the kingdom of Bahrain to represent the country in the field of swimming.

Jesus started swimming at a very young age, when he was just four years old.

His family made him take swimming classes but after the first day, he just completely fell in love with swimming. Of course, it’s in his genes, his family has been linked to different sports and his mother was determined to make him a swimmer.

While he was still studying, he was selected as Best Swimmer in his state and because of this he won a university scholarship where he went on to win a Bronze and Silver medal at the University JUVINES games of 2010 and 2011.

Jesus says “The sport of swimming has taught me self-discipline and selfconfidence. I’ve learned that you can’t always win, that there are failures in life, but the most important thing is you have to continue doing your best no matter what”.

Jesus has won many medals and trophies for his efforts in swimming, but

of these he fondly recalls the award given to him by Rafael Vidal, the first Venezuelan swimmer to win a Bronze Olympic medal, when he won Silver at a National Game in Venezuela in 2000. Having been awarded by his idol felt like he already won the Gold.

Swimming Tips Focus on your exhalation, not your inhalation.

The most common problem swimmers have with their breathing is not exhaling under the water.

If you exhale under the water between breaths you only have to inhale when you go to breathe. This makes things much easier and also helps in relaxing you.

When you’re not breathing, keep your head still.

In between breaths, hold your head still in one position. Don’t roll it around as your body rotates—this will make you dizzy and really hurt your coordination.

Practice Sighting In order to increase your ability to sight in an open water race or triathlon, practice sighting in the pool. On every fourth lap, throw in a few sightings while swimming across the pool. Look up two to three times and try to keep a streamlined position while not dropping your hips and legs. Attempt to look up in one smooth motion within your arm cycle

Ah, the coveted six-pack which many have tried to get, but few actually have. We break down the truth about the midsection so you can get your own packs.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO TRAIN ABS EVERY DAY TO STIMULATE THEM

When you train other muscle groups like legs and back, you indirectly involve your abs, so your core gets a great deal of secondary stimulation.

Of course, you only get that ab activation if you’re doing exercises like squats, deadlifts, and standing military presses, so never rely solely on machine work. However, you don’t need to train your abs every day. Your abs are a muscle group just like any other, and they require postworkout recovery time. While your abs do have a higher degree of slow-twitch muscle fibers, which means they have a higher endurance threshold, you’ll still reap the best results by allowing them to fully recover between workouts.

TRAINING ABS DOESN’T DECREASE BODY FAT AROUND YOUR MIDSECTION

You can do crunches until you’re blue in the face, but they won’t significantly “spot reduce” the body fat around your midsection. This whole sport in fact recalls the Greek legend of Daedalus and Icarus, two men who made wings out of feathers and wax to escape from the labyrinth. Daedalus (the father), cautioned his son to not fly too near the sun, but of course Icarus wouldn’t listen. The wax holding the feathers melted under the sun, and Icarus fell headlong into the Aegean sea, the very first cliffdiver ever.

The Harley Davidson is a household name when it comes to motorbikes.

The H.O.G. or HarleyDavidson Owner’s Group Rally embodies the motorcycle

Day two takes place in the BIC, with riders touring heritage sites in the island finally culminating in The Thunder Parade. Now as the name implies, The Thunder Parade is a ride of all bike classes and types. Everyone is welcome to join, and the BIC will be open to the public on this day.

Last year, 400 bikers took part in the 1st Hog Rally. This year, there are already 750 registrants as of October.

Elevate Your Energy Carbohydrates Rule!

Just like automobiles, our bodies require energy to perform. Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred fuel source because they can be broken down rapidly and used for energy. Unfortunately, there is not enough storage room in the body for carbohydrates to provide fuel for long periods. To maintain your body’s energy levels, you should consume carbohydrates in the form of liquids, solids, or gels.

During competition, try to consume simple carbohydrates that are easily digestible, like sports drinks or gels. During competition, its usually best to avoid consumption of heavy doses of fiber, protein, and fat to decrease possible stomach discomfort and irritability. This is not always the case for less intense sports, so listen to your body to determine which

energy sources are most comfortable for you.

Carbs from Solid Foods

During training and some competitions, solid foods can provide bulk and a feeling of fullness. For longer duration events, such as bike rides greater than 50 miles and golf, solid foods like fruit, sports bars, and breads are great sources of energy. For many high intensity or short duration competitions such as team sports, this is not the case as solid foods require more time to digest.

Carbs from Liquids

Sports drinks typically contain a carbohydrate concentration of 6 to 8 percent, which is optimal for comfortable absorption. This is much lower than fruit juice, which

delivers about a 12 percent concentration of carbohydrates that can lead to stomach discomfort during competition.

Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride, important for proper hydration, are also lost when sweating. Salt/ sodium is the primary electrolyte and may range from 200 to 1,500 milligrams for every 32 oz (-2 lbs.) of sweat lost.

While other electrolytes are important and can be lost in sweat, they are lost in small amounts and typically do not require replacement during training.

For maximum benefit during training and competition, its best to consume fluids in small amounts every 10 to 20 minutes. depending on whether or not you need electrolyte replacement, its easy to consume fluid by drinking water and sports drinks.

A Cautionary Note

Watching fluid intake and loss is also important because drinking too much fluid could lead to a potentially dangerous called hyponatremia. Symptoms of this condition are similar to dehydration: confusion, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.

The key difference is that hyponatremia will likely lead to weight gain, not weight loss. If you experience any of these symptoms with weight gain, you should reduce your fluid intake.

Enhance Your hydration Adequate hydration is imperative when you’re physically active. Otherwise, you’re at risk for dehydration, the inability to replace lost fluid needed for normal body functioning. Dehydration not only impairs athletic performance, especially in a hot environment, but it can be life threatening if not properly managed.

For longer duration, higher intensity events, or when exercising in intense heat, you may need to combine water with other energy and electrolyte sources.

Sports Drinks

Sports drinks provide a combination of fluid, electrolytes, and carbohydrates. The sodium provided in sports drinks assists in fluid absorption while also replacing sodium lost through sweat. Sports drinks are also helpful as they may promote drinking of additional fluids due to their sodium content and flavour profile.

Fueling Practice Recovery Your Plan

When planning nutrition and hydration to improve training and performance, don’t forget about fueling for recovery. Proper nutrition recovery helps maximize your training efforts by giving you a head start on the next training session.

The objective of a recovery meal is to: p Replenish energy stores with easily digestible carbohydrates p Rehydrate with fluid and electrolytes p Repair muscle tissue through protein intake

When participating in single-day training sessions, there is ample time to fully recover with your normal diet. However when training multiple times a day at high intensities, or when recovery times are less than eight hours, recovery nutrition becomes crucial for optimal health and performance.

Within 30-60 minutes following training, athletes should consume approximately ½ gram of carbohydrate for every pound (-450g) of body weight (1 to 1.2 g/kg) in addition to 15 to 25 grams of protein for muscle repair. A recovery sports drink, low fat chocolate milk, or a plain bagel with jelly will likely meet the carbohydrate and protein needs for most athletes.

Athletes should consume 20 to 24 ounces (-590 to 710 ml) of fluid for every pound (-450g) of water weight lost during competition, or until urine colour returns to normal.

Just as you practice your chosen sport, you should practice your nutrition plan prior to competition. This allows you to fine-tune it to your body’s needs.

Alternate Energy Sources Energy Drinks

Energy drinks can provide carbohydrates for longer duration events, or may come in calorie free forms for shorter duration events where glycogen depletion is not a concern. Further, energy drinks contain a variety of ingredients, including caffeine and vitamins, which also provide a boost in energy and performance. Although caffeine can sharpen focus and decrease the brain’s perception of effort, the effects of caffeine are specific to each individual.

Many athletes display positive effects after consuming caffeine. Others may see few or even negative effects with overconsumption. For many individuals, as little as 75 to 100 milligrams of caffeine can provide a positive effect on performance. This amount is found in 8-12 ounce (-237 to 355 ml) energy drinks.

Since caffeine amounts vary widely among energy drinks, read the labels and know how much caffeine you’re nutrition

consuming.

Caffeine is absorbed within 30-45 minutes of ingestion and reaches its peak blood concentration within 1 to 2 hours. There are no specific guidelines for when athletes should consume caffeine, and it is up to each athlete to determine when and if caffeine is most appropriate.

Energy drinks contain a variety of vitamins, which contribute to normal energy yielding, metabolism, mental performance, and reduced fatigue.

Gels

Gels are heavily concentrated thus providing a quick way of consuming energy in the form of carbohydrates. Most gels supply approximately 20 to 30 grams (.02 to .03 kg) of carbohydrates. Whether consumed before or during competition, it’s best to consume gels with at least 12 ounces (-355ml) of water due to their high concentration of carbohydrates.

Millions of young people are being diagnosed today with arthritis. The question a lot of us tend to ask is, if this is normal? And the answer to this is most certainly yes.

With more than 100 joints in the body, the chances of inflammation of one or more joints that affect the musculoskeletal system is high.

Spotlight on the different types of Arthritis

With age come stiff muscles and sore joints that don’t move quite as well as they once did. Most of the time these symptoms are all part of getting older — but some symptoms can point us to the direction of seeking medical advice.

There are many different types of arthritis that cause a wide range of symptoms that vary depending on the type of arthritis you may have.

Common arthritic symptoms include pain around the joints. Other signs and symptoms depending on the type of arthritis include stiffness, inflammation, swelling and damage to joint cartilage and surrounding structures. This can result in joint weakness, instability and deformities that make it difficult to perform the daily tasks most people take for

Early diagnosis of arthritis is the first step towards successful treatment. The process of diagnosing arthritis itself involves several steps: p Step 1 - A medical and physical examination is conducted by a Rheumatologist to determine functional ability and loss of motion p Step 2 – Blood tests and X-rays are then conducted to confirm diagnosis, helping distinguish the type of arthritis present

p Step 3 - While X-rays provide detailed pictures of bones, other imaging tests, such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT scan) can also be conducted to provide images of the tissues inside and surrounding the joints.

Treatment options for good living

There are many treatment options available for people living with arthritis. Some people living with a certain type of arthritis respond well to treatment and without any lingering effects, but other types of arthritis are more difficult to control and can be quiet disabling. The causes are age-related wear and tear, infections, autoimmune conditions, injuries, and others. The good news is that there are plenty of steps that you can take to keep arthritis at bay or minimize aches and pain you may already be feeling.

Any medication or treatment for arthritis must be discussed with and monitored by your doctor or rheumatologist. Gear up for triathlon season with the following swim-bike-run must-haves.

Gear he sport of triathlon has three simple disciplines— you swim, you bike, you run. You need the perfect gear to get yourself from the start line along the water’s edge to the finish line.

Having said that, it’s good to note that it’s not the gear that creates the performance; how you do in the race is primarily determined by training and genetics. The gear only plays a supporting role.

But what exactly is the right kit?

The answer depends in part, on experience and aspiration. A first timer aiming to complete a poolbased sprint triathlon doesn’t have the same needs as an experienced Ironman athlete.

Here is a rundown of the basic race essentials you really need to get you from training to race day.

Fit is paramount—find a kit that conforms to your body to be comfortable.

You can wear tri-suits underneath a wetsuit and throughout the race. They usually have a small degree of padding for biking comfort but not so much that it will hinder your running. However they can cost more than $200.

Swimming Caps

While this is usually provided by race organizers, having a spare is useful for training and for doubling up when the water is cold. Some people also like to use earplugs and nose clips.

In the Bike and Run Bike

What kind of bike do you need? If you’re just getting into the sport and doing your local sprint race, it can be your beach cruiser and mountain bike. If you’re diving in with an Olympic distance race, try a 10-speed bike. If you’re in

Bike Shorts

Bike shorts have a diaperyfeeling pad called chamois— which serves a purpose. Aside from padding, its made of special microfibers that not only move with the skin but move smoothly against the skin, preventing chafing. Your cotton underwear will actually abrade your skin during the ride. Not good. A basic cycle short for riding will make your bike experience that much more comfortable.

Digital Sports Watch

After your first triathlon, you’ll want to pick up a little digital Timex to compare your times from the first event and see how you’ve progressed. A simple sports watch should offer split second timing allowing you to split up and separate your swim, bike, and run times as components of your overall time.

stocked with the essentials should you experience a flat tire, including a mini-pump, a tube, and tire levers. Check with your local shop to see if it offers seminars on how to change a flat because like death and taxes, flat tires are inevitable. Be prepared.

Helmet

No, you don’t need an aero helmet. A 75$ helmet will protect your head just as well as the expensive ones.

Just be sure to get it from your local bike shop, which generally carries brands that have passed standardized testing for safety. Wearing a bike helmet is in the rules and you will not be allowed to compete without one.

Most races will not allow you to leave the transition area unless your helmet is strapped on your head.

Race Belt

Clip your race number onto this elastic belt and strap it on once you’re headed onto the bike, turning it behind you so officials can track you. Once done with the bike, and headed onto the run turn the belt around so your race number faces forward, and smile for the cameras—the photogs can now identify who you are.

On the bike and run, a basic pair of sports sunglasses are invaluable. Wind, bugs, raindrops, and the occasional grit that gets into eyes can be thwarted. Plus, they protect your eyes from the glare of the sun.

Invest in a good pair of running shoes that will see you through many races and many training sessions.

As well, the International Triathlon Union clearly states that competitors may not run without shoes on any part of the course.
