Henry Moore
Henry Moore is generally acknowledged as one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century and from the late 1940s until his death was recognised as the most celebrated British artist of his time. His drawings of nudes, pre 1930, are much sought-after. The fine example offered here is illustrated in volume 1 of the catalogue raisonnÊ, a copy of which will accompany the work. Moore’s sculpture and drawings are to be found in major museums and collections worldwide. There is currently a major Moore exhibition at Tate Britain.

Walter Sickert
One of the outstanding artists of his generation, Sickert was born in Munich of Danish and Anglo-Irish parentage. His family moved to London in 1868 where Sickert was to work as an actor before becoming a student at the Slade School in 1881. In 1882 he became a pupil of Whistler and the following year worked in Paris with Degas. Sickert’s studio in Fitzroy Street, Bloomsbury, became a centre for a group of artists who were later known as the Camden Town Group and the London Group. Sickert mainly painted urban scenes and figure compositions and is known for his reinvention of the nude, exploring the ways in which these powerful images addressed pressing artistic and social concerns of the period. The drawing offered here demonstrates his exceptional talents as a draughtsman.

Eric Gill Eric Gill (1882-1940) was a British sculptor, typeface designer, stone cutter and printmaker. Born in Brighton, Gill initially studied at Chichester Art School from 1899 to 1903. He then moved to London becoming apprenticed to an architect and in his spare time attended the calligraphy classes of Edward Johnston. The content of much of Gill’s work betrays his religious roots, but eroticism also forms an important part of it and he was not afraid to often combine these two elements. The striking thing about his work, whether carving, letter-cutting or typography, is his mastery of linear expression. In 1932 Gill produced a group of sculptures, Prospero and Ariel, for the BBC's Broadcasting House in London. In 1937, he designed a postage stamp for the Post Office, and in 1938 produced The Creation of Adam, three bas-reliefs in stone for the League of Nations building in Geneva. He also designed the large-scale East Wind sculpture that hovers over St James's Underground station. Provenance: Exhibited Goupil Gallery 1913 and 1914. Bought by Edward Marsh 1914 (Churchill's Private Secretary and an influential art collector). Bought from the estate of Edward Marsh's niece Phylis Morris in 2000. On loan to Ditchling Museum during 2003. Literature: Illustrated in Judith Collins’ Eric Gill Sculpture no.39. Work consolidated 2001/2.

Christopher Wood
Christopher Wood (1901-1930) studied drawing at the AcadĂŠmie Julian, Paris. Picasso thought him the greatest draughtsman of his age. A member of the London Group and the Seven and Five Society, he later exhibited with Ben Nicholson. Became something of a legend as a youthful genius cut off before his prime.

Swoon
Swoon (Caledonia Curry) studied painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and began making art for the streets in 1999. Inspired by both historical and folk art sources, ranging from German Expressionist wood block prints to Indonesian shadow puppets, Swoon’s subjects are almost always people, chosen from the hubbub of the streets. She singles out those characters who give cities their visual slang, but who often are taken for granted as part of the everyday fauna. Swoon retrieves them, for a moment, from the blur of the city. Bridges, fire escapes, water towers and street signs create crisscrossing shadows and spaces through which her figures move. After sell-out shows across the United States and Europe and now in her early 30s, examples of Swoon’s work have already been acquired by MoMA, Guggenheim, and the Brooklyn Museum, New York and the Tate Gallery, London.

Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) enjoyed an international reputation, along with Picasso, as the foremost painter of his time. What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or disturbing subject matter… like a comforting influence, a mental balm – something like a good armchair in which one rests from physical fatigue. These soft-ground etchings (the only time he ever used this medium) were made to illustrate the Limited Editions Club, New York 1935 edition of James Joyce’s Ulysses.

Salvador Dali
Dali - Les Songes Drolatiques de Pantagruel (Pantagruel’s Comical Dreams) As a leading Surrealist Dali was clearly attracted by the elements of fantasy, satire, subversion, eroticism and dreamlike material contained in Rabelais’ text for Pantagruel because of their similarity to basic Surrealist ideas. Some of Dali’s Pantagruel images were also influenced by the work of the Swiss painter and printmaker Urs Graf (1485-c.1529), for example the latter’s Soldier with a Lance (1514) and Two Prostitutes Beating a Monk (1521). Graf‘s work was often macabre and he depicted a wide range of social, erotic, military and criminal subject matter which Dali found appealing.
Pantagruel - François Rabelais Pantagruel (c.1532) was the first volume in a series of five connected books written by François Rabelais a French Benedictine monk, physician and humanist scholar. The work was given the overall title of The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel. It relates the story of two giants, Gargantua and his son Pantagruel, and is set in an imaginary medieval monastery where the strict, austere rules of monastic life are completely subverted. In Rabelais’ monastery, life is governed by free will and worldly pleasure is regarded as a legitimate need and aim of human nature. In addition to his satire of clerical education and monastic life the text contained much crude, earthy and scatological humour and the term Rabelaisian is often used to describe outrageous, bawdy behaviour.
