The Augmented Education Program is offered free of charge to students and is partially funded by the government. As such, funds must be raised each year to ensure that this innovative, beneficial and necessary program is able to meet its operations costs and continue to expand! The Augmented Education Program provides job-focused education, training and certification in the fields of construction and culinary arts (Construction Craft Worker Foundations Program and Culinary Skills - Preparatory Training Program - respectively). The program also supports graduates in finding and retaining job placements in their respective industries.
543 students have graduated from the Augmented Education Programs since 2004.
Annual program cost: $800,000
Cost per student:
Culinary: $15,000
Construction: $12,000
My story is a little different than others. I have ALWAYS had a passion for the Culinary Arts and applied to the George Brown Culinary Program 43 years ago. At that time, life took me in a different direction and a 40 year career in the Corporate Sector working my way up through various Sales and Marketing roles. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease during this period and not being able to safely eat in restaurants, I continued my culinary passion at home. During Covid, I spent time soul searching and knew it was time for a new direction. I wanted to fulfill my first love. I picked up my phone and searched George Brown Culinary Programs and the application to this program popped up. I had never heard of the program before but as I read through the application it was asking for information regarding mental health and addictions I was amazed. I immediately knew this program was for me.
I have been witness to MAGIC in this program. Every class I attend I see miracles with how my skills and confidence consistently improve but also every other student.
My biggest take away from my learning in this program is how I wish all other mental health and addiction programs were at the same high calibre. This program is MILES above any and all other support service programs I have accessed during my recovery. Life changing and life supporting.
Originally from Colombo, Sri Lanka, Nuha Hameed moved to Toronto, Canada in 2009 with her three children. She faced the challenges common to many newcomers in Canada, struggling to find her place in the job market and adapting to a new culture and language. However, her journey took a turn when she discovered the Culinary Skills (Preparatory Training) Program at George Brown College in 2011.
Nuha excelled in her culinary studies and was recognized for her talent. She began her career as an Assistant Cook at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, where her passion for cooking continued to grow. Since graduating in August 2011, she has held various roles in the foodservice industry, including Assistant Chef at the Gardiner Retirement Residence, Prep Cook at Station Creek Golf Club, and Food Program and Training Development Supervisor at Fred Victor. Today, Nuha wears many hats. She serves as a Private Chef for the Dominican Friary and St. Bonaventure’s Franciscan Friary, preparing nutritious meals for Catholic friars. She has also returned to George Brown College as a part-time Culinary Coach, assisting students and faculty in culinary labs.
In November 2022, Nuha began teaching specialized cooking classes at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) as part of their Therapeutic Kitchen program, in partnership with George Brown College’s Augmented Education Programs. In addition to her teaching and coaching, Nuha manages her thriving catering business, specializing in Sri Lankan cuisine, offering catering services, cakes, and culinary classes in the Greater Toronto Area. Her ultimate aspiration is to become a celebrity chef in Toronto, and with her unwavering dedication and hard work, she’s well on her way to turning this dream into reality.
