Patriotism

By Masimba Hwati

Every man everywhere is born into a place: a town, a community, a land and by reason of this is immediately attached to and assigned a portion in this territory by matter of birth. That is to say allegiance to his country is immediate and undoubted: if you are born in Germany; if born in Zimbabwe you are a Zimbabwean. You grow up with it in your bones, your blood–in its languages, its character its tones and its attitudes. Aligning yourself with its dictates, its laws, its wars and its loves. For some it is physically manifested–as with soldiers and law enforcement officers. For most it is an attitude of the heart. It is not about the government in control then (propaganda), it cannot be formed except through manipulation and coercion–but then it ceases to be patriotism and becomes only glorified oppression. It is not about self or just “The Nation” as a fanatic rolled in a Zimbabwe flag, no. But it is about a heart set towards the development, growth and improvement of his nation, and a commitment towards– in his own lifetime to contribute to the well being of a people and the betterment of his nation and society (whether on a national scale or within his sphere of influence).

Tafadzwa Tarumbwa POVO: In terms of commercial value for 2D animation what’s the industry like at the moment

At this level of discussion we discover some of the reasons why art can be therapeutic and can be a point of contact for different people in a personal way. This type of energy usually appeals to the childhood memories. My personal illustration is the old brown suitcase at our house ,when I see the same one of something like that it immediately connects to that part of my childhood back in the summer of 1992 .There are several personal events that are intimately connected to that image, the cognitive process begins. Another example is the multi coloured umbrella at our old home the first images and memories that are triggered are closely associated with a very special woman: Mai Emilia our next door neighbour who was a cross border trader and used to bring the umbrellas from South Africa. Another example is the yellow maize commonly known as ‘Kenya” to most Zimbabweans it will remind them of the drought in 1992 .This type of maize meal became very famous in this period as relief food aid.

Tafadzwa Tarumbwa: At the moment a lot of people don’t appreciate the value behind animation in general the only time when it was viable for me to be a 2D animator was when I was at MaIdeas Advertising Company. They would write a concept, once they wanted that concept presented to the client. Some clients wouldn’t understand the whole jargon on paper, so I would take that concept and interpret it and animate it in a way that they would understand. Then they would take the script and a visual aid in the form of the animation. That’s the only time it was commercially viable.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Genesis 1 vs 1-2
