Deal reached to suspend port workers strike until January

poultrytimes.com

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A port worker strike, that began on Oct. 1 and lasted for three days, affecting shipping sites along the U.S. Eastern and Gulf shores, was suspended through a deal reached on Oct. 3 that defers the strike until Jan. 15 to provide time for a new contract to be established.

The International Longshoremen’s Association’s 45,000 workers were to resume work immediately after the group and the United States Maritime Association, which represents shipping companies and the ports, reached a tentative wage agreement.

A joint statement from the ILA and USMX, notes that the two groups, “. . . have reached a tentative agreement on wages and have agreed to extend the Master Contract until Jan. 15, 2025, to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues. Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease, and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume.”

On Oct. 2, USMX stated that, “Reaching an agreement will require negotiating — and our full focus is on how to return to the table to further discuss these vital components, many of which are intertwined. We cannot agree to preconditions to return to bargaining — but we remain committed to bargaining in good faith to address the ILA’s demands and USMX’s concerns.”

The North Bergen, N.J.-based ILA also thanked the Port Authorities of New York and New Jersey and Porth Authority Police for their professionalism in keeping a peaceful environment during the strike.

The Port Authority Police “respected my ILA members and treated them with dignity and respect while we were on strike . . .,” Harold J. Daggett, ILA president said. “They cooperated with our ILA strike captains and maintained peace and safety as the ILA picketed at all our terminals . . . It’s natural for emotions to run high during strikes, where confrontations and altercations might be the norm, but the Port Authority Police kept things under control by allowing my ILA members to

peacefully protest.”

During the strike, the American Feed Industry Association, noted the importance of keeping feed and nutrition lines open for the animal agriculture industries.

“Our industry does not have a choice to provide vital nutrition to farm animals and pets — we have a responsibility,” Constance Cullman, AFIA president and CEO, said. “Yet, with reduced access to imports of essential ingredients, packaging materials, equipment or other goods, production of animal food may be limited at best. The animal food industry relies heavily on the interdependence of smooth shipping routes and has spent years building relationships with foreign buyers and sellers, yet overnight, could lose the ability to access or do business with international markets.”

The association added that an extended strike could have had an impact on the health of farm animals, as 100 percent of vitamins are imported, “showing that even brief delays in shipments could significantly affect livestock and pet health,” AFIA said.

“It’s a relief that a tentative agreement has been reached and

the ports will be open for business once again. For U.S. farm products to flow smoothly to domestic and international markets, it is essential for all parts of the supply chain to be fully functioning,” Mike Seyfert, National Grain and Feed Association, president and CEO, said. “The shutdown of these vital shipping ports was already starting to create big problems for NGFA’s members and America’s farmers during harvest season. Left unresolved, this strike could have led to higher transportation costs for agricultural shippers and jeopardized valuable customer relationships. For the sake of rural America, we hope that the parties involved will work diligently between now and Jan. 15 to find a long-term agreement that works for both sides and keeps our shipping channels open.”

President Joe Biden, in a statement on Oct 3, added, “Today’s tentative agreement on a record wage and an extension of the collective bargaining process represents critical progress towards a strong contract. I congratulate the dockworkers from the ILA, who deserve a strong contract after sacrificing so much to keep our ports open during the pandemic. And I applaud the port operators and carriers who are members of the U.S. Maritime Alliance for working hard and putting a strong offer on the table.”

USDA announces final funding for meat and poultry processing program

Poultry Times staff

ebobenhausen@ poultrytimes.com

WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and USDA have announced that the agency will be giving $35 million in grants to 15 independent meat processors in 12 states. This funding will help boost the capacity of processing, create competition to grow market prospects for American farmers and establish more employment options.

The $35 million will be the last investment made into the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP). The program was started in 2022 by President Biden. The president funded the program through the American Rescue Plan.

“For the past four years, the

Biden-Harris Administration has advanced a sustainable vision of agriculture that prioritizes the needs of the hardworking producers and small business owners who keep rural communities strong,” Vilsack said. “Through investments like these, USDA is working to give farmers and ranchers a fair chance to compete in the marketplace, which will increase local food options and lower grocery costs for American families.”

Since the start of the initiative, the USDA given $325 million through MPPEP to increase processing capacity and solidify the food supply.

“Many projects are still in development and have already increased the processing capacity at these facilities by more than 800,000 cattle, 14,000 hogs, 23 million chickens and 5 million

turkeys annually,” USDA said. “Additionally, these projects are serving almost 900 additional meat and poultry producers and have created more than 1,200 new jobs.”

The funding will continue to support new processing plants,

job growth, local producers and consumers’ options at the grocery store. The funds will support people in states such as, Arkansas, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York and Pennsylvania.

Dr. Louise Dufour-Zavala, executive director of the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network, discussed the many challenges of highly pathogenic avian influenza, and it how it now also affects several species, during the University of Georgia’s recent Georgia Broiler Conference.

Staying engaged during bird flu’s many changes and challenges

dstrickland@ poultrytimes.com

WATKINSVILLE, Ga. — It’s the fall, and this is the perfect time to remind poultry producers about looming endemic diseases, notes Dr. Louise Dufour-Zavala, executive director of the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network.

“A big problem we have is crisis fatigue,” she said. “With avian influenza now in dairy cows and other species, growers have heard so much, day in and day out in the field; I don’t know how you handle this crisis fatigue, it’s tough. When we hold our yearly AI and biosecurity talks, you can see it in the

growers; they are just tired of it.

“Our big challenge is how do we keep everyone engaged?”

Zavala addressed the disease situation with highly pathogenic avian influenza, as well as its relation to other animal species during the University of Georgia’s 2024 Georgia Broiler Conference on Sept. 25.

• Avian influenza

Since the beginning of this current wave of HPAI outbreaks, the state of Georgia has had three cases. The first one was in Toombs County in May 2022 in a large backyard operation with about 350 birds, along with many dead vultures. The vultures are suspected to be the cause of the virus introduction to this operation. The second case was in Henry County

in August 2022 at a sanctuary for birds and other animals. This case posed problems with dead animal disposal, and also had a large number of infected vultures. The third case was near Thanksgiving in November 2023 at an operation in Sumter County with 30,000 ducks. This third case was considered commercial even though it produced mallard ducks that were raised for release. This specific case caused a lot of concern over its potential effects on exports. The response was swift with depopulation of the ducks, and this facility has not re-populated.

Georgia has also had 10 to 12 wild species of birds infected in the state, from bald eagles to several species of ducks, Zavala said, adding that there have been no

cases in commercial poultry in the state. She also compared the large AI outbreak in 2015 versus what is the current outbreak.

“In 2015, it was supposed to be the biggest outbreak we’ve ever seen,” Zavala said. “To the current one, 2022 to 2024, which is much worse than we ever thought possible back in 2015. We have H5N1 in all four of the nation’s wild bird migration flyways, affecting 48 states, 101 million birds lost to date, versus 50 million in 2015.”

In comparing the two outbreak periods, she noted that in 2015: the strains were H5N2 and H5N8; in three flyways; 50 million birds lost; 232 detections; 10 percent were backyard flocks; and ran from December 2014 to June 2015. For the current outbreak: the strain is

Photo

H5N1; it’s in all four flyways; in 48 states; 101 million birds lost; 1,176 detections to date; 57 percent are backyard flocks; and has run from February 2022 to the current time.

“The biggest difference with this current outbreak is that the majority, 57 percent, are in backyard birds, especially outdoor birds, versus only 10 percent in 2015,” Zavala said.

“In 2015, we had a huge problem with farm-to-farm dissemination. It was mostly humans carrying the virus from farm to farm to farm,” she added. “This outbreak, it’s the wild waterfowl and the wild affected birds that are infecting by what we call point introduction. It’s still ongoing. There has only been about a five- to six-week period with no new cases.”

• Vaccination

In looking at vaccinating flocks for AI, she noted that it is a USDA decision, and then it would be up to each state to decide whether to use it. France has used vaccination in its duck production, and it has been viewed as a success, although the nation has been banned from export from many countries.

“Vaccination would increase the resistance to infection. A vaccinated bird would need more virus to infect it,” Zavala said. “Because it’s not 100 percent, we would still need biosecurity steps to prevent entry of the wild virus into the flock. The problem with vaccination is you would need to match the field strain exactly. And those field strains keep changing. It changes every year, and you would need to change the master seed used at the vaccine level into the field every year.”

“It has to be injected,” she noted. “There is no mass application of an AI vaccine Once a population of poultry is vaccinated, you would have to be able

“A big problem we have is crisis fatigue. With avian influenza now in dairy cows and other species, growers have heard so much, day in and day out in the field; I don’t know how you handle this crisis fatigue, it’s tough. to differentiate what you have vaccinated versus what was infected naturally. That would take some technology, that exists, but that we don’t currently use. And the big problem is that it disturbs exports considerably.”

Zavala also added that there are discussions among the nation’s egg and turkey industries are using vaccination, but if they were to vaccinate, it would cause a big problem for the broiler industry and our trade partners.

“We still don’t think it’s going to happen,” she said. “But there are a lot of politics going on about it right now.”

• Mammals

With current HPAI outbreaks, there has been some spill over into mammal species, ranging from bears to sea mammals, to sea lions, possums, and skunks. Out of the approximately 400 detections in mammal species, the largest had been in red fox. With this number some of the breakdown includes 34 percent red fox, 15 percent racoons, 15 percent, skunks and 10 percent sea lions.

“What is concerning now is all of a sudden you see it infecting domestic cats,” she said. Some of this rise has come from domestic cats on infected dairy cattle farms

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Poultry Times has launched a free email newsletter, The Poultry Report. We have learned that relevant, actionable news and information are absolutely critical to every aspect of the poultry industry as we all navigate very challenging times. With a focus on current industry trends and concise content delivery, The Poultry Report is designed

where they more than likely contracted the disease from mice and consuming raw milk.

“The dairy situation is giving the opportunity for the virus to infect even more animals, and some of them closer to us (people),” Zavala added.

• Dairies

Bird flu was first detected in a dairy cattle farm in Texas in March 2024.

“There were a lot of sick dairies before that, because who in the world would think to look for bird flu in a dairy cow?” Zavala said. “So, it took a while after having these dairies lose production and cows that had stopped eating and not feeling good.” Tests were conducted on these cows for many different viruses, until finally reaching AI.

“So, it probably started before March, but that was the first detection,” she added. “Cows go off feed, they have a little fever, they decrease milk production, milk changes texture, the milk changes color. The interesting part of AI is in dairy the virus has a very strong affinity for the mammary tissue. There’s a lot more virus in milk than there is in the nose of those cows. It’s concentration is in the udder and in the

milk. The concentration of the virus in the milk is higher than you could ever get from a chicken or a turkey. It’s unbelievable the concentration that is in the milk. The pasteurization does kill the virus, but it’s a big concern.”

The strain that has been detected in the dairy cattle is called B3-13.

“It’s difficult to find this strain in wild birds,” Zavala noted. “And if a poultry flock breaks with this strain, it came from dairy, and not the other way around.”

The state of Georgia has 3,300 chicken farms and 76 Grade A dairies, she said, adding that there has not been a commercial detection of the virus on these farms.

For the nation’s dairy farms there has been 232 cases in 14 states. In the early days of detection, it was discovered that the virus was spreading of interstate movement of the lactating animals. USDA began a program of mandatory testing of any animal to be moved from one state to another.

“Also, because there is so much virus in the milk, any that milk is disposed of becomes a concern,” Zavala said. “At the end of the day, biosecurity has the same importance everywhere.”

Flush mount light trap kit

VAL-CO

VAL-CO’s Flush Mount Light Trap Kit eliminates the need for building a doghouse for your fans if you are using a light trap to block out light. The flush mount design is very robust and has powder coat over galvanized steel transition panels for even more protection. There is also a nonflush mount kit which is great for retrofits where you want to add light traps in front of exhaust fans without a major construction project. The light trap is on hinges, so it is easy to swing the light trap open to access your fan to clean the shutter, grease the bearings, and check the belt tension. The large effective area of light trap reduces the static pressure that the fan experiences. Plus, it ships unassembled which helps save money on freight. Available as a brown out version, the VAL-CO Eclipse and as a black out version, the VAL-CO NightAir. www.val-co.com

Narrow loop feeder

VAL-CO

VAL-CO’s new Narrow Loop Feeder provides uniform feeding for your male birds. At only 24” wide, this system has a new hopper that can send feed in both directions at the same time. The new extension hopper can hold up to 350 lbs. of feed with knockouts on the top for easy access. One of the best features of the Narrow Loop Feeder is that one winch lifts the entire system up in the air at night, enabling the trough to be filled, then lowered in the morning for presentation feeding. The unique grill prevents males from eating from inside the loop, encouraging them to eat from the outside of the system so they can be easily inspected and evaluated. Best yet, the Narrow Loop Feeder uses

the same VAL-CO corners, chain, trough & direct drive units as our hen feeders, ensuring that farmers and dealers have less parts to keep on the shelf. The Narrow Loop Feeder was designed to last and built to perform. www.val-co.com

Transport trailers

VEIT North America

Imagine transporting more than 115,000 poults for over 24 hours from South Dakota to Miami. This kind of trip takes the birds through external temperatures well over 100 degrees F (max. 115 degrees F), yet the air in the cargo hold never exceeds 80 degrees F and carbon dioxide levels remain optimum the entire time. The sensitivity of newly hatched chicks to the surrounding climate during transport make it extremely demanding operation. With hundreds of thousands of chicks generating enormous heat energy (each emitting around 1.5 BTUs), the air conditioning system must operate optimally in order to ensure their comfort and safety. This is vital as a chick’s comfort during transport has a strong direct correlation with future growth performance. When stress levels rise, chicks tend to eat and drink less, leading to increased mortality rates and substandard deviations from ideal growth curves. Transporting chicks in North America poses unique challenges for the entire industry. VEIT North America tackles them head-on with its VEIT 40 Heavy Duty trailers. Each trailer is assembled in the USA and features a spacious cargo hold, equipped with a specialized mechanical room. Built similarly to a shipping container, the trailer is extremely resilient and practically indestructible, even under rough handling. An inside-mounted winch helps with unloading. Two powerful DEUTZ engines are completely integrated with fully automated starting features and are located in the easy-access mechanical room. The VEIT 3D AirFlow ventilation system evenly distributes temperature-controlled, oxygenated air throughout the cargo area with durable, high efficiency fans. https://veitna.com

Ceiling-suspended robot

Cumberland

Cumberland, AGCO’s poultry production equipment brand, is introducing Scout, the world’s first ceiling-suspended robot system to continuously monitor broiler chickens and their poultry house environments to increase animal welfare as well as farm productivity. “With Scout, producers can achieve better feed conversion, early disease detection and fine-tuning of climate control, resulting in reduced mortality and less condemnation numbers,” said Scott Becker, director of North America sales for Cumberland. The advanced robot uses a complete set of sensors to map key indicators that impact bird health and performance, including: Thermal comfort (temperature, relative humidity and air speed); Air quality (CO2 and ammonia); Light intensity; Sound levels; and bird distribution. Scout also classifies excrement for early disease detection 24 to 48 hours before producers may become aware of an issue. In addition, the technology identifies dead birds. Monitoring information is available to producers 24/7 from any device, including daily and weekly reports with maps of their entire house. Scout can send up to 15 different alerts to producers’ mobile phones to keep them informed when they’re away from the farm. “The consistent and accurate reports allow producers to identify and fix problems before they become a larger issue,” Becker said. Scout can be ordered through the Cumberland dealer network.

IR Hopper Sensor

Cumberland

Cumberland is introducing a new IR Hopper Sensor that uses infrared sensing to help poultry producers better manage their feed hopper levels. This is accomplished by having an adjustable sensor in the hopper, which gives the producer more control of how they want to run their feed system. When feed drops below a sensor, a programmable timer enables a delay between 10 and 180 seconds. The hopper fill system starts when any IR sensor detects an absence of feed, and the time delay has finished. “By adjusting the IR sensor height and time delay, producers can lessen cycle time, decrease feed outage and reduce the potential for overflow,” said Ken Evans, product

manager for Cumberland. “The big win here for a producer is having the dependable IR sensor down low in the last hopper with the ability to make adjustments so there is always enough room in the last hopper for overflow feed from the fill system.” He noted the sensor’s 12-inch height adjustment and 360-degree rotation provide optimal feed detection. The sensor is easy to install and maintain, with no moving parts to break or maintain, and uses the same technology as Cumberland’s i-plus3 control pans. The versatile design also allows sensors to be easily moved between flocks. Chain feeding system

Roxell

Roxell has launched the Fortena chain feeding system for broiler breeders in the production period. Roxell completes its total range for feeding, which now contains a solution for every type of poultry farmer. These feeding systems are a component of Roxell’s 360° range for farm equipment with innovative drinking systems, nests, heating, ventilation and controllers. The Fortena chain feeding system is not just a different version of the current systems on the market. The design of the chain, feed trough and corner wheels has been taken care of by Roxell’s feeding experts. The result is an innovative chain feeding system that improves and speeds up the feed intake of the hens and reduces residual feed. “It may be surprising that as a notorious pan-feed promoter, Roxell now also has a chain feeding system, but actually it’s a logical step,” said Frank Hartmann, marketing manager at Roxell. “We have been working hard on broadening the range for 10 years. The excellent performance of pan feeding systems is an indisputable advantage. However, those who opt for ease of use and visibility will find an excellent alternative in our chain feeding system. A chain feeding system therefore also belongs in a 360° product range. In short, today Roxell has a solution for every need.” New chain feeding system, robust and convenient. “The Fortena chain feeding system is not a copy,” said Inge Van Daele, product manager at Roxell. “Our systems are all innovative, durable and performant and this chain system is no different. Specifically, our feeding experts worked on the design of the chain, feed trough and corner wheels. That is why the feed intake improves with Fortena and that is due to the greater ease with which hens eat. The feed remains intact better and the hens get to the feed more easily. Moreover, the new corner wheels require hardly any maintenance. Finally, we use high-quality materials and techniques to guarantee the longevity for which Roxell is known.” www.roxell.com

MD, ILT, IBD vaccine

Merck Animal Health

Merck Animal Health has announced that INNOVAX®ILT-IBD vaccine is commercially available as part of its poultry product portfolio. The company received license approval for the vaccine in the U.S. from the USDA in 2023. INNOVAX-ILTIBD provides combined protection and immunization against Marek’s disease (MD), infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) and infectious bursal disease (IBD) in a single injection. It can be administered in the hatchery to layers and breeder flocks to increase early-life protection, and to broilers, both by subcutaneous injection at day-old or in ovo application at 18 days of incubation. Building on Merck Animal Health’s legacy of protection offered by INNOVAX-ILT, INNOVAX-ILT-IBD features two glycoprotein inserts instead of one and provides twice the protection against ILT, in addition to the IBD antigen. This unique combination of two glycopro-

teins (gD and gl) ensures a robust cellular immune response and a neutralizing antibody response.

“Merck Animal Health continues to shape the future of animal health by continuing to develop innovative, science-driven ways to preserve poultry health and performance while maximizing our customers’ productivity,” said Dr. Charles Broussard, senior account manager for poultry sales, Merck Animal Health. “In commercial poultry farming, viral infections can lead to significant economic losses if flocks are not sufficiently protected through vaccinations as pathogens can spread rapidly among birds.

INNOVAX-ILT-IBD provides protection against three of the most common viruses that affect poultry flocks.” Vaccination with INNOVAX-ILT-IBD in the hatchery provides scientifically demonstrated protection as early as five days for MD, 14 days for IBD and 28 days for ILT. INNOVAXILT-IBD is available in a 2,000dose ampoule.

Recombinant vaccine

Zoetis

Zoetis has expanded its poultry vaccine portfolio with the introduction of Poulvac® Procerta® HVT-IBD-ND, a recombinant vector vaccine that provides early, robust protection against Marek’s, infectious bursal and Newcastle disease viruses with one dose. “Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND is the culmination of meticulous research conducted by a team of our top molecular scientists using the most advanced technology available,” said Dr. Sing Rong, research director at Zoetis. “The vaccine has a unique construction and a strong promoter that helps boost immunogenicity — features that set it apart from other vaccines in the same category.” The backbone of the new, trivalent vaccine is avirulent herpesvirus of turkey (HVT), which replicates in chickens and is known to be a safe and effective vector for delivering major avian antigens. It is the third recombinant vector vaccine from Zoetis, following the introduction of Poulvac Procerta HVTND in 2020 and Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD in 2021. When developing the vaccine, Zoetis scientists started by constructing 43 recombinant prototypes, which were then subjected to rigorous, controlled studies to find the one that provided the best, early immunity. The candidate that was finally selected is the vaccine that is now Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND. Protection in birds that received the trivalent vaccine in ovo was 90 percent following intraocular challenge with a virulent infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus at 14 and 21 days of age, Rong said. The vaccine also proved effective against

velogenic Newcastle disease (ND) following in ovo administration, providing 75 percent protection after a challenge at 14 days of age and 95 percent protection after challenge at 21 days of age. When birds that received Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND were challenged at 63 days of age with virulent or very virulent IBD or velogenic ND viruses, 100 percent were protected, demonstrating the vaccine’s long duration of immunity, Rong said. Like the other HVT vector vaccines, Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND has an excellent safety profile and avoids reactions associated with live ND vaccines. It can be administered subcutaneously at hatch as well as in ovo, Rong added.

Feed additive

Amlan International

Calibrin®-Z, an efficacious, mineral-based feed additive offered by Amlan International, protects poultry and livestock from biotoxins that reduce performance and cause morbidity or mortality. Amlan International is the vertically integrated animal health business of Oil-Dri Corp. of America, a global manufacturer of sorbient minerals. Calibrin-Z features naturally occurring phyllosilicate layers with opal-CT lepspheres that, together with our proprietary thermal-processing method, promote the binding of multiple biotoxins. Independent laboratories have verified that Calibrin-Z effectively binds mycotoxins and bacterial exotox-

ins and endotoxins in vitro. Two broiler challenge studies were conducted evaluating the ability of Calibrin-Z versus competitor toxin binders containing various additional formulated additives to reduce the negative effects of both aflatoxin and fumonisin. Data from these studies indicates that including Calibrin-Z in a mycotoxin-contaminated diet, kept broiler feed conversion ratios equivalent to the unchallenged control group. Data from studies also indicated that including Calibrin-Z mitigated reduced weight gain in broilers fed a mycotoxin-contaminated diet. Broilers fed Calibrin-Z performed better than those fed other commercially available products. www.amlan.com

Direct contact water heater Ludell Mfg. Co.

The Direct Contact Water Heater (DCWH) from Ludell Manufacturing Co. (a division of Ellis Corp.) is designed for energy efficiency, heating by a method different from that of a conventional boiler. Efficiencies up to 99 percent can be achieved and hot water provided instantaneously with this technology. A traditional boiler utilized boiler tubes within a pressure vessel and a heat exchanger to warm process water, while the DCWH’s design simplifies the energy heat transfer by placing the process water with the combustion source. That is, the process water is heated directly by the combustion exhaust of the natural/ propane gas burner. Serving as the burner’s combustion exhaust path, the DCWH’s heating chamber is an upright cylinder. The burner is located about 1/3 of the way from the heater bottom, and

directly above the heater storage sump, from which heated water is pumped. The burner is set back from the vertical heating chamber, which forms a combustion chamber, helping ensure complete fuel combustion prior to the heating energy entering the heater chamber. The upright heating chamber design incorporates four separate zones: the process water inlet zone, heat transfer media zone, burner combustion zone and hot water storage sump. Water to be heated enters the heater via a spray nozzle. The nozzle creates a spray pattern, using customer supply pressure that matches the heater’s diameter. The water droplets descend, at atmospheric pressure, and become preheated due to surface contact with the heat transfer media. The media also helps contain thermal energy from the rising hot vapors created in the burner combustion zone. The small, preheated water droplets then descend and pass through the burner combustion zone, where the intense heat increases the water temperature to the preset level. The heater water droplets then fall and gather in the storage sump located below the burner. Once heated, the water is re-pressurized with a pump and delivered for process use, or it is delivered to a large hot-water storage tank for heavy demand usage.

Leak detection technology INFICON

INFICON is offering its new non-destructive leak detection technology. Designed to help meat and poultry manufacturers detect gross and fine leaks in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) and flexible packaging, the Contura® S400 takes a non-destructive approach to testing and serves as a costeffective, reliable alternative to more traditional leak detection methodologies, including water bath testing. “Package leaks can be detrimental to product quality because they can reduce shelf life and create the potential for food safety issues due to premature spoilage. However, these leaks are often undetectable to the naked eye or by traditional testing methods,” said Bill Burnard, business development manager with INFICON, package integrity and general vacuum. “Reliable leak detection equipment, like the Contura S400, can help meat

and poultry manufacturers catch faulty packages before they reach the hands of the consumer, which ultimately can prevent costly recalls and protect brand reputation.” The Contura S400 is designed for a range of meat and poultry applications that include thermos-formed meal kits, flow wrapped breakfast sandwiches, vertical form filled and sealed chicken wings, vacuum packed bacon and more. To test for leaks, meat and poultry manufacturers simply place the package between two unique membranes that create a conformal vacuum chamber which is quickly evacuated. The gas flows through any package leaks into the chamber where it causes an increase in pressure. INFICON’s patented high precision vacuum gauges measure this change to calculate the package’s leak rate and delivers results in seconds. Results are reported via an easy-to-read display screen. All results are reproducible.

Compost system

Farmer Automatic/Aggero Aggero’s manufacturing history has roots in the egg industry. The earliest Compost-A-Matic, an invessel system to process organ-

ic waste, was developed in the 1980s out of a manure problem on a chicken farm in Statesboro, Ga. As a Farmer Automatic cage system distributor in the U.S., the company saw a constant need for waste management systems. Using our own Compost-A-Matic as a starting point, we created Aggero to design and manufacture the most efficient systems. Through the years, the company’s machines have gotten faster and smarter but the concept of how to process poultry manure has not changed. The CompostA-Matic eliminates odors while converting manure into a pathogen-free, weed seed-free organic product that will never revert to raw manure. This 45-day process produces a compost that is no longer a breeding source for insects and won’t chemically burn vegetation when used in agricultural applications. The Compost-A-Matic can take in 100 cubic yards of new material every day, which is the output of roughly 500,000 birds. Fully automated and requiring minimal maintenance, it’s an ideal investment for a farm of any size. Made in America for three generations, Aggero’s compost turners have changed with the times,

but our commitment to quality has not.

912-681-2763

Litter spreader Farmer Automatic/Aggero

The antibiotic-free movement is affecting the poultry market globally, and consequently, in-house composting is gaining traction. A cost-effective windrow process would allow more producers to conserve litter, manage waste, control pathogens, and reduce the use of antibiotics. As a poultry equipment manufacturer, we were constantly asked to modify our skid-steer windrow turner, the CompostCat, to meet the task of broiler and turkey deep litter pasteurizing process. Now, Aggero presents a Compost Cat tuned to tackle the demands of the broiler industry, start to finish. Aggero began by examining the many issues that have been problematic to the concept of windrowing: vertical clearance under feed pans and water lines, hardpan density, litter depth, how quickly a house can be processed, and how to spread litter quick and level. Improvements include a higher horsepower engine and 50 percent more auger power. An aggressive auger

It’s in our name, and it’s in our craftsmanship. Every American Coolair product is manufactured in our Jacksonville, Florida plant, using American raw materials such as steel sheets and coil, and aluminum sheets, coil and ingot. We produce the most durable ventilation products and evaporative cooling systems for the poultry, dairy, swine, greenhouse, commercial and industrial fan industries. Our fans outlast any other fans, which is why we still carry parts for fans manufactured over 50 years ago. Count on American Coolair for superior, responsive customer service and 100% commitment to quality American design and engineering.

design rapidly collects caked litter and shreds it into a windrow in minimal time. At more than 10 feet wide, the collector head creates two large windrows with fewer passes. Additional features specifically designed for the broiler house include sideconveyor and spreader disk addons that attach with a hook and pin system for quick set up. After two years of modifications and upgrades, Aggero’s concept has come to life as the BroilerCat. 912-681-2763

Rodent control

Motomco

Technology continues to have a major impact on animal production, and Motomco has introduced a new way to manage a critical aspect of biosecurity: rodent control. Motomco iQ products integrate proprietary sensors into popular existing bait stations and traps, turning them into powerful tools for gathering data about rodent activity Using technology developed by Motomco and its parent company, Bell Laboratories, producers will now know everything about where and when rodents are active on their operation. The data gathered by Motomco iQ products will provide valuable insight into the risks that rodents pose, giving producers the ability to evaluate and verify the success of their rodent control measures. When, where, and how much activity will no longer be based upon an “educated guess.” It will now be known in extreme detail and will automatically be collected and archived to provide trend analysis and proof that a control program is working. Applicators and technicians responsible for on-farm pest control will be able to know in real time where hot spots are occurring so more time can be spent addressing problem areas. Thus, allowing every employee to be more effective and valuable. The Tomcat® Titan iQ, Tomcat® Bullet iQ, Tomcat Live Catch iQ and Tomcat® Rat Snap Trap iQ are now available and will seamlessly sync with the Bell Sensing Technology smart phone app and portal. This first of its kind rodent monitoring system requires no gateways or complicated and costly infrastructure to set up. Highly customized Bluetooth sensors allow data to be quickly gathered onsite from each iQ device and then uploaded to the cloud directly from

a smartphone or tablet. It is a complete rodent data gathering and management system, easy to use, with a cost basis that will allow it to be used at any agricultural operation. “Motomco is extremely excited to announce the launch of our new product line, Motomco iQ. Our customers are always looking for ways technology can improve their operation, and iQ products will allow Producers to be much more effective and efficient managing rodent control on farms,” said Kent Gutzmer, president of Motomco. Motomco iQ products will be available through Motomco’s nationwide network of distributors and animal health suppliers.

Ralco

Litter treatment

Ralco has announced the expansion of its poultry line with Essential Dry XP, a litter treatment for targeted ammonia control. Essential Dry XP contains diatomaceous earth (DE), yucca schidigera and patented essential oils and is OMRI Listed® for organic production. “A key factor in developing Essential Dry XP was the industry need for a better, cost-effective way to manage ammonia levels from litter,” said Dr. Tim Broderick, poultry research & development manager for Ralco. “The unique formulation of Essential Dry XP allows us to reduce ammonia using multiple modes of action.” Ammonia is one of the most harmful gases released from poultry litter. As chickens excrete nitrogen in their feces in the form of urea or uric acid, it mixes with moisture, bacteria and heat causing the release of ammonia. Research shows Essential Dry XP is able to reduce ammonia volatilization in poultry litter. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the release of ammonia from litter and showed Essential Dry XP was able to continuously reduce the rate of ammonia release by over

30 percent. In chicken houses, independent research demonstrated this combination of active ingredients reduced ammonia levels from 17.5 ppm to 2.5 ppm. Prolonged exposure of ammonia levels at 10-25 ppm can impair the health of both people and poultry. Even at low levels of 5-15 ppm, ammonia can reduce flock performance, impair immune function, increase risk of respiratory disease and result in more condemnations at processing.

“Essential Dry XP helps control ammonia in three unique ways,” said Richard Lamb, biochemical engineer for Ralco. Yucca schidigera helps bind ammonia and can interfere with urea activity. DE helps neutralize ammonia, absorb moisture, bind mold and acts as a natural insect repellent. Essential oils help reduce pathogens which convert urea to ammonia using powerful antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. “Combined, these components can manage ammonia and moisture for improved litter quality and bird performance.”

Phytase enzymes

DuPont DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences

has announced the launch of its novel phytase enzyme, Axtra® PHY GOLD. The enzyme offers superior performance compared to other phytases on the market, delivering greater feed cost savings to producers. Axtra® PHY GOLD will be available in the United States, Mexico and India and eventually worldwide, pending regulatory authorizations. Recent scientific studies demonstrate that Axtra® PHY GOLD’s ability to allow formulation of inorganic phosphate-free high phytate diets, improves sustainability of animal production. It also offers market-leading thermostability, proven to outperform other commercial phytases under a wide range of pelleting conditions, making it the natural choice for applications where pelleting performance is a primary concern. Phytate is the main storage form of phosphorus in all grains, which represents the basis of most plant-based diets used in animal production. Phytases are enzymes that help break down phytate, allowing better absorption of phosphate and reducing or removing the need for addition of phosphate supplements in poultry and pig diets. The ideal phytase needs to break down

phytate as quickly as possible to reduce the phytate’s negative impact. This requires an enzyme that is highly active at the low pH in an animal’s upper digestive tract. Axtra® PHY GOLD has been developed with this in mind. “Most poultry and swine diets contain a phytase enzyme, which is an important contributor to the feed performance,” said Dr. Arno de Kreij, segment leader, DuPont Animal Nutrition. “DuPont is committed to continuously investing in and developing better solutions for animal producers, such as Axtra® PHY GOLD, that enable the industry to further optimize feed cost and meet the challenges faced during feed production, like environmental impact.”

PMI, the feed additive business of Land O’Lakes, introduces Supplant phytogenics feed additives for poultry and livestock. Supplant phytogenics harness plants’ ability to prompt specific physiological responses in the animal. As demonstrated by the first product, Supplant D, this targeted approach delivers consistent results for elevated performance. “PMI is taking a novel approach to phytogenic feed additives by targeting responses in the animal,” says Dr. David Bravo, Land O’Lakes director of innovation and technology scouting. “This is more direct than the common approach of using phytogenics’ anti-microbial properties to impact gut bacteria. At PMI, we consider the unique production challenges for different species and life stages; we search for and identify the right phytogenic compound to assist the animal’s response.” Phytogenics are the key to animal responses. Plants contain compounds, or phytogenics, that elicit physiological responses in animals, called host-mediated responses. Birds and animals have receptors along their guts and through-

added UV and corrosion protection, so it can handle the harsh environments found in agricultural barns. Ag-Barrier comes in solid and perforated versions. In new construction, it is an excellent option as a drop ceiling material. It’s considered an upgrade over existing try-ply material used as a drop ceiling material or wrap because it blocks 95 percent of radiant heat from entering a confinement area. Its use in existing buildings can be beneficial as well. By adding Ag-Barrier as a poultry curtain, ceiling material or wall material, you get all the benefits of a radiant barrier while increasing the lifespan of the current insulation installed. Many farms use fiberglass insulation in their roofs and walls. During a period of approximately five years, the fiberglass loses much of its efficiency. Instead of having to constantly put more insulation in, installing Ag-Barrier as part of a reflective insulation system drastically improves the efficiency of the insulation already installed by as much as 50 percent.

Slat flooring sys.

INDIV

INDIV is proud to partner with Zeiset and Hostetler for this new, innovative slat design. It’s easy to clean and hygienic design is well suited to cage free layer production. It offers a longer life than other slats and is designed to give breeders and layers comfortable footing due to the smoothed edges. This should lead to a reduction in foot problems and blisters.

The slat’s square hole openings have a specially designed nonporous surface. This allows for easy manure passage which assists with the prevention of manure build-up and bacteria; providing a more sanitary environment for the bird and eggs when compared with wooden slats. The overlapping tabs are designed for easy assembly, for either wood or metal support systems. Due to the special design of this slat, it requires fewer screws to be used during assembly. This means you will save both on installation time and cost. The Sani-Slat’s heavy duty design is rated for up to 250 lbs. (113.4

Kg.) of static weight per 1/4 section of slat, in the fully attached/ fastened state with both ends and center support. It’s manufactured in the U.S. from high quality, 100 percent virgin plastic materials. 417-862-2673

Dedicated drinkers

Ziggity Systems

Ziggity Systems pioneered the concept of dedicated, separate male and female drinker lines featuring Big Z Drinkers that deliver hygienic water without the need for bacterial laden catch cups. Just as the industry adopted the use of separate male feeding lines decades ago, many producers today are realizing the advantages of separate male drinker lines as well. Male broiler breeder birds are much taller than their female counterparts and thus, to prevent water wastage during male drinking activity, the male drinker line height must be managed higher than the female drinker line. The dedicated female drinker line, managed lower for the appropriate height of the female, features a shielded drinker which inhibits the males using the female drinker. Ziggity Big Z and Big Z Shielded drinkers are engineered to meet the special needs of large, aggressive breeder birds. Broiler Breeder birds strike the drinkers more forcefully than broilers, which can lead to water spillage and drinkers that wear out too quickly. To solve these problems Big Z drinkers are much larger in size than conventional drinkers and feature heavy-duty drinker bodies and high-grade stainless-steel components for long life. Enclosed, hygienic drinker line systems featuring male and female drinkers ensure all birds have access to clean water while achieving the best opportunities for efficient drinking and less water wastage, leading to dry litter, dry slats, less ammonia, better environmental conditions, improved bird welfare and most importantly, better bird and egg production results.
