The Potomack Company 1166 JOHN HANCOCK MILITARY APPOINTMENT SIGNED AS GOVERNOR, 1790 Military appointment signed by John Hancock on November 29th 1790. Daniel Barlow is being appointed "Captain of a company in the Second Reg' first Brigade and fifth regiment of the militia of this Commonwealth comprising of the counties of Plimouth, Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes County, and Nantucket." Hancock signed underneath the Massachusetts paper seal, with his usual paraph present. The document is countersigned by John Avery, the first Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Torn in half along the vertical crease, with minor loss of text, including the 'A' in Avery. The lower right corner also loose, detaching the most of Avery's name. Minimal foxing and toning. Note on the rear of the appointment regarding the appointment, dated July 11, 1791. $600-800

Crane Family Collection 1168 HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW SIGNED 'EXCELSIOR' POEM STANZA, 1868 On the back of a scrap piece of paper, Longfellow has written the first five lines of his poem 'Excelsior', followed by his signature and the year. The edges have some mild age-toning. The shades of night were falling fast, As through an Alpine village passed A youth, who bore, 'mid snow and ice, A banner with the strange device, Excelsior! $300-500 Provenance: Stewart R. Columbus, Ohio: Jacob H. Studer & Co., 1878. Both volumes beautifully rebacked with new spines in style. Moderate rubbing to boards. Volume 1 is Studer's Popular Ornithology - The Birds of North America, with 119 colored plates representing upwards of seven hundred different species and varieties of North American birds, including a popular account of their habits and characteristics. Tide-marks to fore edge of text block, sometimes impacting plates. Volume 2 is Ornithology; or the Science of Birds, with 212 illustrations on 37 plates.
