big welcome to the 5th Southdowns Folk Festival packed full of great folk, roots and acoustic music, dance and so much more for everyone to enjoy. Lots of Festival events are free including superb music in local pubs, the William Hardwicke (hosting the very popular Real Ale Festival), The Alex and The Hothampton Arms. There will also be free music workshops, singarounds, music sessions, children’s entertainments, buskers and the celebrated Sussex Young Folk Competition. Add to this a comprehensive dance programme with nine different groups over Saturday and Sunday and ticketed evening and afternoon concerts in the Alexandra Theatre and Regis Centre Studio, then you’ve got the recipe for a first class Festival! Look out for the fascinating array of different craft, ethnic and rustic stalls plus yummy catering. Our Festival headliners are some of the very best in the U.K. with first class support acts. There’s more about who’s appearing when & where, plus a full programme elsewhere in this pull-out. Finally, we’re very grateful to ‘Awards for All’ in funding our Schools Festival Project and to ‘Sussex Community Foundation’ for making possible our Festival Skills Project in partnership with ‘Making Theatre, Gaining Skills’. All in all, it’s going to be an exciting four days. Enjoy. Roger Nash (Chairman – Southdowns Folk Festival)

Planning for ten new homes BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk PLANS for ten dwellings in Chidham have been approved by Chichester District Council. A proposal for the reuse of previously developed land for residential development of ten dwellings and associated works was agreed.

CHICHESTER

THe approval at the site of Greenacre Nursery on the Main Road in Chidham, was made at the planning committee meeting on Wednesday. THe application had originally been deferred because of legal arguments concerning the principle of redevelopment Councillor Andy Collins, vicechairman of Chidham and Hambrook Parish Council, claimed that the

development would make good use of what was a derelict brownfield site. He said: "Although this site is technically in the Chidham area, it cannot be considered beautiful. "If the site is left as it is, the parish council will be concerned for the safety as it is at the moment it is potentially dangerous. It should be allowed for development, if only to improve the safety. In its current state it can only be

regarded as an eyesore." Mr Johnson, a resident of Chidham, was opposed to the planned development. He said: "I am concerned this planning application represents a significant threat to the Chichester Harbour area of outstanding natural beauty. "THis site is not suitable. It doesn’t meet a local housing need and it is, at least, premature." Turn to page seven
