Parking issues with school BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk LAST Thursday was the start of term for pupils attending the new Chichester Free School in Hunston Road. The school, which had previously been situated in Romney Broadwalk, Bognor Regis, and Vinnetrow Road, Chichester, finally opened its doors to pupils at the
former Carmelite Convent. However, residents at nearby Whyke Road have expressed concern with the amount of extra traffic and parking in the area as parents struggle to pick up and drop their children off. The new school operates a compulsory car share procedure for all pupils from Year 1 and above in order for them to manage their traffic flow onto the site. The school's website says: "Chichester
district planning authority have guidelines that they permit on any development and of course the Education and Skills Funding Agency had a budget to build a school and provide facilities. "There are limited parking spaces on site. We have 120 parking spaces, which must cater for everyone – disabled parking, the staff, visitors and drop off/pick up, so ‘kiss and drop’ will be vital for the safety of all our children on site and we will need to
oversee this; arrangements will include use of permits, car sharing for pupils and staff, and public transport." Cllr Sarah Sharp from Chichester City Council, went to Whyke during an afternoon pick-up. She said: "On the positive side, the new crossing of the road and bus stops are in place for the beginning of the new term - there were fears these would not be completed in time." See page three
