A NEW contract for the disposal of business waste and recycling for Chichester has been approved by cabinet members from Chichester District Council at a meeting held on Tuesday. THis contract is currently held by West Sussex County Council but is no longer

Bognor Road, Chichester, West Sussex, PO20 1EJ Tel. 01243 756170 BrickKilnGardenCentre

cost effective according to the district council. THe new contract from September would see 100 per cent diversion from landfill to be achieved through its energy from waste facility, which not only provides a sustainable solution for non-recyclable waste, it also mitigates against annual increases in landfill tax. THe district council currently operates a business waste and recycling collection

service where the material (general waste, mixed recycling, card/paper) is transported to the transfer station at Westhampnett and disposed of by the county council. THe disposal charges which are paid, per tonne, to the county totalled £874,925 and accounted for 57 per cent of the total revenue received. A new disposal contract with a supplier will provide an approximate saving of

£180,000 for the first full year of contract. Cllr Roger Barrow said: "THis trade waste service does make an important contribution to our income stream. Up to 2016/17 it was providing us with an income in excess of £130,000. "Unfortunately, the financial viability of this service has been undermined by an increase in the disposal charges that we have to pay." See page three
