Pagham open air loo shock A PAGHAM roundabout is being used as an open air toilet, shocked councillors were told this week. THe road feature is outside the closed Sandy Lane loos and has become an alternative for some people caught short by the locked doors. Angry members of Pagham Parish Council unanimously agreed to demand the six month closure of the men’s and women’s conveniences should be ended. THey have told Arun District Council to scrap the trial project and keep the toilets open all year. Parish council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said at its meeting on Tuesday: “People are urinating and defacating in the bushes nearby and in the ornamental boat on the roundabout. It is a totally unsatisfactory situation. “If that is going to be caused by the toilets being closed, then the toilets are not going to be closed. “We will ask our clerk to go to Arun and tell them to do their job properly. "THe trial has failed. THere is an unsatisfactory situation occurring.” THe nearby Beach Café had also seen some 200 people going into its premises to use the toilets, said Cllr Radmall. As reported, the Sandy Lane toilets were among four sets of loos Arun agreed to close for this winter as a costcutting measure. THey were shut from October 1 and will not re-open until Easter 2018 and then close again until May 1.
Ms Jones said: “Arun has just given planning permission for Church Farm Holiday Village to open for longer each year. So, there is obviously a tourism need for the toilets. THe two decisions are not in sync. “Arun has an officer collating the feedback about the trial. But it was a council decision to close the toilets and it needs to be a council decision to open them again.” She had been told by Arun the saving on utilities, consumables and utilities during the closure was £2,500. THe toilets were still being serviced because the disabled toilet in the block remained open for those with a key available to disabled people. THe parish councillors agreed to approach their fellow member, and district councillor Dawn Hall, to seek her help to re-open the toilets. Parish council member Cllr David Huntley said: “We should request these toilets are kept open all year round.” Cllr Peter Atkins said: “As a holiday village, we need to have the facilities that should be here.” Cllr Phil Higson said: “Pagham is an all year round resort.” An Arun spokesman said: "THe council are continuing to monitor the impact of these closures and all correspondence received on this matter. We will, therefore, consider any correspondence received from Pagham Parish Council accordingly." *See page seven
