Hotspot for High Street EMPTY shops in Bognor Regis town centre are set to be a hub for new firms. Exciting plans are being compiled by Arun District Council to turn The Arcade in the High Street into a hotspot for entrepreneurs. The council expects to start promoting its new acquired property in the next two months for start-up businesses. Denise Vine, its group head of economy, said Arun was committed to ensuring The Arcade returned to its past as a bustling feature of the town centre. One of the ways this would be achieved was by replacing rigid fixed-term leases with short-term deals to encourage those with business ideas to move in to its range of small outlets. Speaking to the Post, she said: "We will be looking to have small businesses who need that type of space. "The council intends to offer flexible leases for as little as three or six months, rather than long fixed-term leases. "We want something that adds to the offer in the town. Although the council has primarily bought The Arcade for its investment value, the purchase is also a great opportunity to help us to regenerate the town." The Arcade was opened in July, 1902. It has 17 outlets of various sizes. Five are empty. A make-over last year by the previous owner failed to attract new businesses to move in. One of the existing traders said he welcomed Arun's purchase of the building and called on it to help tenants.

Aman Singh, the owner of Silver News, said: "I'm happy Arun has bought The Arcade. The first thing the council should do is to review the rent. "All we are doing at the moment is making enough money to pay our bills. With the service charge and council tax, the bills are too much. That's the only reason The Arcade is like it is - because the bills are too expensive. Every shopkeeper along here will say the same." Councillors were told this week the opinion of the covered walkway between High Street and Belmont Street had changed since Arun’s purchase was announced this month. Cllr Phil Hitchins, who chairs the Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee of Arun, said: “Since Arun purchased The Arcade, there have been approaches by people wanting shops in the area – not just in The Arcade but elsewhere. “I have been approached by people saying they would like to move in. Because of the publicity we have got, hopefully we will get more shops coming to Bognor Regis and some different shops, which is a good thing.” Toyubur Rahman, Bognor Regis town centre manager, said: “It is an absolutely tremendous move on behalf of Arun. It shows a commitment to the town. But also an opportunity to set the standard as well. “I know it’s all about filling the empty properties and getting some income in but the council can try to improve their quality and set the standard for the town centre."
