Loo closures cause a stink PUBLIC toilets in Felpham and Pagham are set to be shut this winter for the first time. The loos will be locked by Arun District Council on October 1 and stay closed until next Easter in a cost-cutting move. But the impending closure has raised fears that the surrounding areas could be used as open air toilets by those desperate to relieve themselves. Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr

Ray Radmall said he was annoyed the conveniences in Sandy Road – the only ones in Pagham – had been earmarked for the seasonal closure. “I don’t think this is a good idea at all. I am worried that people will be relieving themselves in the bushes instead. “Although there are not the visitors that there are in summer, we still get birdwatchers coming down all the time to the nature reserve.

“They will not find any toilets open. Before now, they could have gone in to the King’s Beach Hotel, but that’s closed as well now.” He said he hoped members of the business community would rally round and be prepared to open the toilets on a voluntary basis. If they were, he would speak to Arun to see if the closure could be reversed. In Felpham, the loos in Culver Road –

also described as being in Blakes Road are included in the closure programme. Glenn Powell, the vice-chairman of Felpham Village Conservation Society, said its members believed it was appalling to close the toilets. “Felpham is being sold down the toilet,” he said. “The society is appalled at the loss of the toilets during the winter months.
