Welcome A
big welcome to the 5th Southdowns Folk Festival packed full of great folk, roots and acoustic music, dance and so much more for everyone to enjoy. Lots of Festival events are free including superb music in local pubs, the William Hardwicke (hosting the very popular Real Ale Festival), The Alex and The Hothampton Arms. There will also be free music workshops, singarounds, music sessions, children’s entertainments, buskers and the celebrated Sussex Young Folk Competition. Add to this a comprehensive dance programme with nine different groups over Saturday and Sunday and ticketed evening and afternoon concerts in the Alexandra Theatre and Regis Centre Studio, then you’ve got the recipe for a first class Festival! Look out for the fascinating array of different craft, ethnic and rustic stalls plus yummy catering. Our Festival headliners are some of the very best in the U.K. with first class support acts. There’s more about who’s appearing when & where, plus a full programme elsewhere in this pull-out. Finally, we’re very grateful to ‘Awards for All’ in funding our Schools Festival Project and to ‘Sussex Community Foundation’ for making possible our Festival Skills Project in partnership with ‘Making Theatre, Gaining Skills’. All in all, it’s going to be an exciting four days. Enjoy. Roger Nash (Chairman – Southdowns Folk Festival)

Six-figure sums to landlords BED AND breakfast landlords are being paid up to £250,000 a year to look after homeless families. Arun District Council is being forced to spend the six-figure sum because of its growing need to provide B&B rooms for those without roofs over their heads. Councillors agreed on Wednesday to increase their predicted gross budget for temporary accommodation to nearly three-quarters of a million pounds in the
current year. Details given to councillors showed more than £250,000 had been spent by Arun in the past year with one proprietor of four of the B&Bs it uses. Cllr Ian Buckland (LD, River) told the full council meeting he was unhappy that individual property owners were being paid so much money. "I totally sympathise with the scenario the council is in, don't get me wrong, and I understand the reason why the
spending is going up. "But, rather than putting up the amount of money for B&Bs, I believe the council should be going to B&Bs and scrutinising them," he said. "I've heard that we are paying some landlords £1,000 a week. At the moment, this is a licence to print money and I think people are ripping us off. We have got to be looking at better value than that." THe increase in funding decided

After housing benefit and other income is received by the council, the net spending on the rooms is likely to be £533,000. Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said: "THis situation is not sustainable.
