Town hit by parking fee rise SOARING parking charges for streets in Bognor Regis town centre could damage the retailing area, it has been claimed. THe pay and display fees will go up by about 11 per cent, West Sussex County Council has announced. THis will see the hourly rate increase from 90p to £1 for motorists to park in roads like Belmont Street, Clarence Road, London Road and Sudley Road. THe charge for shorter stays will also go
up from 30p to 50p, though the permitted period is expanding from 20 minutes to 30 minutes. Hugh Coster, the vice-chairman of Bognor Regis Civic Society, said the latest increases added strength to its campaign since November 2016 for the county council to scrap the charges for town centre roads. “Bognor Regis is the only town in Arun in which the county council imposes
these charges,” he said. “Littlehampton doesn’t have them and Arundel doesn’t have them. “We want to see a level playing field among the towns. We have called on Cllr Bob Lanzer (the county council’s cabinet member for highways and transport) to achieve this. But he has just prevaricated. “Even Arun District Council, with its car parks, appreciates that free parking has been successful from the point of
