Hunger fears for new benefit VOLUNTEERS at Bognor Regis Foodbank are braced for a surge in new customers when a new benefit starts in the town. THe government is expanding the use of universal credit for claimants next week - and the experience of foodbanks around the country is that demand for meals will soar as claimants go hungry. Sue White, the foodbank’s project coordinator, said: “Wherever universal

credit has been rolled out, in the 12 months following, the use of foodbanks has gone up 52 per cent. “We don’t know if that figure will happen here but we need to make sure our shelves are stocked just in case.” THe expected increase for the foodbank’s supply of tinned and packaged food, as well as essential goods like groceries, comes as the charity is seeing more and more people in its
Argyle Road base. Its last full year - to March 31 - saw 2,330 people, including 662 children, turn to it for emergency supplies for meals. “THis was a 15 per cent increase on the year before,” said Mrs White. Nationally, other foodbanks operated by the Trussell Trust experienced a 13 per cent increase. Mrs White said she was grateful for the continued support of so many people around Bognor Regis who took in fresh
supplies or left them in its collection bins in the town’s major supermarkets. “THe food is coming in,” she said. “Our supermarket bins are always full but the demand is up as well and we always need more supplies. We are just trying to fill our shelves as much as possible. “I think it can be difficult for people to remember us in the summer when there is so much going on. See page two
