Christmas gifts collection at town hall is scrapped CHRISTMAS has been cancelled at Bognor Regis Town Hall. THe civic building has scrapped the annual festive collection of presents for deprived children. It has been the focal point for kindhearted residents who crammed their shoeboxes with gifts to brighten the lives of the youngsters across eastern Europe. But officers at the Arun District Council-owned town hall have scrapped the arrangement for the Mustard Seed Relief Mission's Love in a Box appeal because they say there is not enough room to cope with the hundreds of donated boxes. THe decision has dismayed generous town centre resident Daphne Young. Mrs Young, 75, of Henry Street, pictured above, has been donating a shoebox to the appeal for about eight years. "I've been filling it with 15 items like toys, games, crayons, a ball, pens and paper as well as a hat, scarf and gloves," she said. "THere was probably about £20 of presents in there, possibly a bit more. "My husband, Jim, went to the town hall recently to find out when they would be collecting the boxes for this year and they told him they were not getting involved this year because they didn't have enough room. "I can't understand why that has happened. How is that they have had the space up to now. But it's wrong not to let anyone know. It's that which is really upsetting as much as anything else. It would not have hurt so much if they had.

"I'm sure it's upset many people. THe town hall used to get hundreds of shoeboxes because it was a nice central collection point." Mrs Young used to put together her boxful of gifts during the year to ensure she collected a wide range ofby Kevin Smith by Kevin Smith presents. "It's certainly a shame because there is nowhere else in Bognor for us. It used to have 200 boxes and people got used to taking them in there," he said. "But it is one of those things. THere is nothing we can do about it. Nothing ever stays the same but it is not as if we can ST find anywhere else in Bognor to help us." An Arun spokesman said it was looking into the matter. A detailed response from the council about the situation will be printed next week

f Courtney Pearson meets the fire crew THe people at the fire station said they didn't think I would survive," said Ms Pearson, of Ford. "I stayed there for two hours and found it interesting to have a look round." West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service crew manager Natalie Mandry was among those who met Courtney. She said: "It was lovely seeing her on Saturday and to see how well she is getting on. I work in the call centre at Haywards Heath and we never usually get to meet the people who are the subject of the calls we receive. So, it was nice to meet Courtney." THe fatal collision occurred about 7am on Sunday, April 12, last year. Mr Adair, 22, was driving a Peugeot 106 along the A29 Shripney Road close to the

McDonald's restaurant. According to police at the time, the car 'collided slightly with another vehicle' before it went off the road and crashed into a tree. By chance, Mrs Mandry and two colleagues were on their way to work when they passed the scene of the accident and called for assistance. Mr Adair was pronounced dead at the scene. Ms Pearson was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital. She was a patient in its intensive care unit for a month. Her extensive injuries included a broken back, a broken collarbone, broken shoulder blades and three broken ribs. She also suffered lacerations on her

spleen, one broken and four cracked vertebrae on her spine and a bleed on her brain. She was transferred to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester to continue her recovery and remained there for another month before she was discharged. Former warehouse worker Courtney said: "I am pretty OK now. I struggle with my back but I am physically normal. But the mental side of things needs to be worked on." She has some plans to go to college. But she added: "I don't really like to think about the future. You just don't know what is around the corner. "I am just going along and seeing what comes and take things as they happen."

From page one As a cause of concern to Citizens Advice. Ken Porter, who heads its research and campaign team, said: "THere have been over 1,100 clients in the past year talking to us about PIP and there have been 130,000 nationally. "PIP is now the single most important benefit that we deal with. It's the top of the pile and very significant." THe impact on claimant's lives of the government's switch to the payment from Disabled Living Allowance is being documented by Citizens Advice. THe results will be presented to the county's MPs next month in an effort to highlight the situation to the government. THere was also an 80 per cent rise in financial services and capability inquiries in 2015/16 against the prior year. Mrs Groves attributed this to the centres' Pension Wise guiders who have handled several thousand inquiries from the over 50s in the past year in an area from Lancing to Portsmouth. Other matters which Citizens Advice's 27 staff and 150-plus volunteers have handled included jobs and housing. Geoff Palmer, the organisation's chairman, said: "More than 13,000 people in Arun and Chichester have been helped to find a way forward through the advice given. "THat number does not include people involved with the webchat, which we do not count at the moment, and that will form an increasing part of our service in the future. "THere are also the people who look at our website and find the help they need there without having to come to our centres." But he warned Citizens Advice needed to prepare for the funding challenge which would arise when its grants from various councils ended on March 31, 2018.

` Houses approved SIX new homes in Walberton village centre have been approved by Arun District Council. Its planning officers have said the three-bedroom dwellings on the site of Turnpike Garage in THe Street were acceptable and had no adverse effect on the setting of the village's conservation area.
