INJURED former servicemen and women will be seeing art created by Felpham Community College pupils. A mural by the college's nine-strong Year 7 Art Group been chosen for display at Queen Alexandra Hospital home in Worthing. The 60-bed hospital home is a national charity which cares for more than 100 former servicemen and women a year by providing high quality nursing care and rehabilitation. The charity held a competition for all West Sussex schools to design a mural based on the quote 'Our residents do not live in our workplace, we work in their home' for their inspiration. The art group's members - India Dines, Francesca Nelmes, Pippa Morris, Adam Dwyer, Emily Watts, Abi Merriott, Joyce Chapman, Hannah Sargent and Deryn Angel - created their final design on a canvas which was taken to the home at the end of term to go on permanent display in its main building. College art teacher Carly Ayling said: "It is a fantastic achievement for our students to have won this competition. They spent hours on their design for the mural and looked forward to doing the actual piece on a much larger scale." SUMMER holidays will be spent in a hospice for some Felpham students. The four Felpham Community College pupils have been accepted on to a summer school at St Wilfrid's Hospice. Vicky Clegg and Esmee Matthews, who have just completed Year 11, pictured
right, and Lydia Rickard and Aaron Sulton, formerly in Year 12, will attend the programme for six days next month. There are only ten places available for 16 to 19-year-olds for those who want to pursue a career in health or social care and competition is fierce. Esmee said: "I am coming back to Felpham in September to study chemistry, biology and maths and I hope to be either a GP or heart surgeon. Any experience I can get in the health sector is great." Would-be pharmacist Aaron said: "I want to work in pharmacology so this is a chance for some experience in the health and social care field." The summer school at the Grosvenor Road hospice involves a variety of experiences, including patient contact, classroom seminars and discussions and shadowing staff. Successfully completing the course will give the quartet three Level 2 QCF Awards in Understanding how to work in end of life care, Understanding the role of the social care worker and Awareness of communication in adult social care. College careers co-ordinator Gill Woodman said: "This is a brilliant opportunity for our students to get involved with and we are really pleased four have been accepted." SIX Felpham Community College have graduated from the Sussex Study Experience. This is run through the University of Sussex and is designed to offer
students an experience of universitystyle teaching and learning. It includes both academic sessions and personal development days. Lilah Matthews, in Year 13, completed the programme in English; Carly Jellett (Y12), art history; Bette Parry (Y12), business; Charley Murphy (Y12) and Luke Phillips (Y12), law; and Tom Baker (Y12), computer sciences, electronics and robotics. Carly said: "I have really enjoyed the programme. I am studying music, art and media at Felpham and want to do music/performing arts next year. "I am already planning what universities I want to look around after the summer."
