urking, lurching, decaying and swaying. Undeterred by the weekend’s heavy rain and howling winds, the creepy corpses of the undead took to the streets of Newcastle on Sunday as part of the third annual ZombieFest. Zombies from far and wide gathered at the Newcastle Museum before marching on Tower Cinemas for a screening of zombie short films. Susan Ford was one of the many zombie aficionados who took part, freaking out the public with her terrifying take on a zombie nun. Having taken part in similar ‘cosplay’ or fancy dress events throughout the state in the past, Ms Ford said she enjoyed adopting a different persona for the day. “I love the anonymity of it,” she said. “Today I’m a zombie nun, tomorrow I could pass you on the street and you would never know it was me. “It’s just a bit of good clean fun.”

Pool power to the people AMELIA PARROTT

ewcastle City Council has caved to community criticism surrounding the management of its pools, announcing on Wednesday afternoon that it was back flipping on its previous stance and electing to

extended the operating hours of the Beresfield and Stockton Swimming Centre to 5pm on weekends during the peak summer period. General manager, Ken Gouldthorp, said Council had listened to pool users and decided to change its position. However, he warned residents that if the new summer operating hours were to continue, pool patronage would have to increase. “Future operating hours will

depend on the response,” he said. “To maintain these extended hours, we will need to see a spike in attendances over the next two and a half month, so I really want to encourage local communities to utilise their local pools.” Stockton resident, Chelle Heath, organised a sit-in protest at the Stockton Swimming Centre that was attended by over 100 locals earlier this month. She believed there was good and

bad in the announcement. “I think it is wonderful that the hours have been extended,” she told the Post. “Unfortunately the reason they shortened them in the first place was because people weren’t using it, and people weren’t using it because it was too expensive. “At the very least they need to reduce the children’s entry price by half otherwise they are just wasting ratepayers money.” Continues on page 3
