WHAT'S ON Drive

Wednesday, 8.30pm • SBS 2 A Hollywood stunt driver (Ryan Gossling) by day moonlights as a top-notch getaway driver-for-hire in the criminal underworld. He finds himself a target for some of LA’s most dangerous men after agreeing to aid the husband of his beautiful neighbour, Irene. When the job goes dangerously awry, the only way he can keep Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best - drive.

Agnostic Front The American Dream Died Out Now

When it comes to hardcore punk, there’s no denying that Agnostic Front are a no fooling institution of the genre. Starting life in New York in the early 80s, their first two incendiary albums United Blood and Victim in Pain are regarded as truly groundbreaking albums of the genre and still influences countless bands to this day. Fans will be pleased to know that this, their eleventh studio album, has lost none of the aggression that has typified their sound for the past 30 years. From the moment the opening track Intro kicks in with bludgeoning intensity frontman Roger Miret and co. grab you by the throat and refuse to let go. Given that, over the course of their career, Agnostic Front have dabbled in straight up hardcore punk, thrash, oi and even a little bit of proto grindcore, this record could be a great introduction to their uncompromising sound.

Out Now RATED M

Friday, June 4 & Saturday, June 5 • Metro Theatre

While perhaps best known for zany roles in the likes of Ghostbusters and Stripes Bill Murray can also do subtle with aplomb. Murray plays a cantankerous, and hedonistic Vietnam Vet who is happy living in his self-absorbed bubble. That is until he meets Oliver, a young boy next door whose parents have just divorced. The pair soon form a strong bond and Oliver begins to see more in the old man than just his foibles.

Having remained the ultimate crowd pleaser seminal Aussie indie rockers Jebediah have continued to play festival and special one off gigs throughout the years however, their current tour, Twenty, is the biggest the band has undertaken in some time and will be delivered in two halves: beloved classics and surprises first, then their ‘97 debut and fan favourite, Slightly Odway, in its blissful, ballistic entirety. It’s impossible for an Australian of a certain vintage to imagine those late ‘90s summers without those delirious early Jebs singles - Jerks of Attention, Leaving Home, Teflon, Harpoon, Animal - blasting out of every car radio and festival PA from Summersault to Falls to Homebake.

Art for art’s sake Through the wreckage of Sydney outfit The Art’s most trialling year, the band return with their strongest effort yet. A year of battling long American roads, European festivals, drug charge allegations and a change in personnel has proved the winning formula for this band at their creative peak. An epiphany amid chaos, The Art’s new single Dead Inside showcases the band’s extraordinary ability to touch a nerve through truth, song and daring sonic expression.

Stylistically, The Art are difficult to pigeonhole - a darkly perfumed oddity, eclectic in emotional elements and delivered with blistering rock and roll impact. The sonic diversity of The Art’s sound has earned them fans across multiple genres, the common tie binding all elements at play being an intense sincerity. Catch The Art at the Hamilton Station Hotel on Wednesday, May 13.

Sweatin’ with soul If you prefer your music with the warm, inviting crackle that only vinyl can bring then you’d do well to get along to the Newcastle District Tennis Club next month when the Brand New Bag Motown and Soul Review burn up the dance floor with a selection of classic 45s. If the name wasn’t a big enough clue, these DJs will be spinning all original soul, Motown, R ‘n’ B, Northern soul

and blues vinyl from the 60s and 70s so, if the likes of Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, The Supremes, Percy Sledge and Otis Reading float your musical boat, you’ll be in hog heaven when the Brand New Bag DJs fire up the decks. Catch the Brand New Bag Motown and Soul review at Newcastle District Tennis Club on Friday, May 1. Visit facebook.com/brandnewbagdj for more information.

Stay a while with Bain Hot on the heels of a prestigious WA Music (WAM) song of the year for his track Hold On, Perth tunesmith and multi-instrumentalist, Morgan Bain has hit the road in support of his new single Why Don’t You Stay. Organ driven with rich and varied vocals, Bain’s self- described ‘alternative moody soul’ sound is perfectly showcased in the new single. The track was recorded and produced at The Wastelands studio with ARIA award winning producer, Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, Meg Mac, Little Birdy). “The song is about anxieties that come with giving your everything to someone and how to not let those anxious thoughts take over and get in the way of how you really feel,” Bain said. fter a mammoth sell out season last year, Australia’s undisputed foremost purveyors of comedy mayhem, The Doug Anthony Allstars are extending the run into 2015 and will be making a triumphant return to the Civic Theatre next month - and Tim Ferguson sincerely hopes all is forgiven. “We hope it will be a triumphant return but that will depend on whether the local police and the local business chamber are willing to let bygones be bygones,” Ferguson laughed. “But seriously, Newcastle has always been great to us and we’ve played some fantastic gigs there over the years - there’s something about you Newcastle people and comedy.” While Ferguson and Paul McDermott will be without their original foil, Richard Fidler, whose ABC Radio commitments excluded him from hitting the road “Richard is this huge radio star raking in obscene piles of taxpayer- funded cash, so it’s understandable that he wouldn’t want to associate with the likes of us,” Ferguson mused - the pair have teamed up with long- time collaborator Flacco (Paul Livingston) who, Ferguson said brings a whole new dynamic to the trio. “Both Paul and I have to be really polite to Flacco because we both look up to him as a true comedy mentor and, really he

is the only person that either of us are nice to so backstage the dynamic is quite collegial and he definitely brings his own dynamic to the stage - he’s kind of like the Harpo of the group and he’s also desperately funny with an impeccable sense of timing. “But, while it is a different dynamic with Flacco, the same sensibility that’s always been there, is still there - attack, attack, attack.” Mixing an aggressive, confrontational and, more often than not, shocking brand of humour that swings effortlessly from the ribald to jokes about Nietzsche and Kierkegaard, with an innate musical sensibility that gave us songs covering such diverse themes as bestiality, incest, murdering hippies and communism, The Doug Anthony Allstars cut an irreverent swathe through the Australian comedy scene like none before or after. “Nobody in the world was approaching comedy at the time the way we were and I also think that there was an inherent recklessness with what we were doing that was appealing to a lot of people.” Despite starting life busking on the streets of Canberra in the early 1980s, it was in the UK where people started to sit up and take notice after some wellreceived shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival led to numerous appearances on British television, but it was their appearance on the Ben Elton- hosted Friday Night Live TV show when things started to click for the trio. “Friday Night Live was huge for us,” Ferguson said.

There was an inherent recklessness with what we were doing that was appealing to a lot of people “We had never done television before and here we were on a show that was watched by eight million people and I for one never imagined that there was that kind of audience for comedy, so it was really pivotal. After returning to OZ, the All Stars started making inroads into the Australian comedy zeitgeist thanks to regular appearances on the seminal ABC show The Big Gig and their subsequent series DAAS Kapital. Ferguson, whose post- Allstars career diverted into a few different paths including stints on television (Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush, Funky Squad), lecturing in comedy and author - having written the satirical novel Left Right and Centre and his autobiography Carry a Big Stick: A Life of Laughter, Friendship and MS (that deals with his life as a successful comedian and his battles with multiple sclerosis) - as well as a tilt at the senate in 2013, said

there was always a sense of unfinished business when it came to the Allstars. “Yes there has been a sense of what might have been as, when we did call it a day in 1994, it was quite sudden,” he said. “But we did a reunion show in 2013 at Melbourne Town Hall for the DVD release of DAAS Kapital and it sold out so we thought ‘why not?’ So, it’s definitely all back on again and after this run we’re off to the UK, the US, Canada and Germany so it’s all systems go.” He added that the trio had noticed a number of much younger fans turning up to shows, which he puts down to the availability of their early material on YouTube. “You know it’s funny, because most people in their 30s have no idea who we are - it’s people 40 and over and strangely there is this growing band of young people turning up with these gifts like special biscuits with our faces on them and painted portraits, its this weird cult thing happening so we’re busy organising restraining orders you know, treat them mean and keep them keen? Get those AVO’s and go, go, go.” While Ferguson’s illness may keep him confined to a wheelchair these days, it would be a fool’s errand to expect any of the sarcastic vitriol he displayed in their heyday has dissipated. “The great thing about it is that nobody expects to be c**k-punched by a guy in a wheelchair so I’m definitely using that to my advantage,” he laughed. Catch the Doug Anthony Allstars at the Civic Theatre on Saturday, May 9.

hile they have never been a band to revel in past musical glories, Western Australian prog rock adventurists Karnivool, are hitting the road to celebrate the ten- year anniversary of the release of their ground- breaking and criticallyacclaimed debut long player Themata. Guitarist Mark Hosking said that the tour was more about celebrating fan loyalty rather than patting themselves on the back. “This tour is a great chance to pay tribute to the people who have been supporting us since that record came out,” he said. “It’s pretty mind-blowing to me that, ten years after Themata came out that I still get emails from people telling me how much of an effect the album had on their lives so

we definitely want to pay that back in some way.” While it has been a decade since the album dropped, Hosking said that it was more of a case of ‘time flies when you’re having fun.’ “It does and it doesn’t feel like ten years,” he said, “I mean we’ve achieved so much since that album came out but also, I mean, I moved from Melbourne to Perth to start work on the album and ten years later I’m still here.”

By the time the tour kicks off at the end of this month, the band will definitely be a well-oiled machine, having just come off highly successful tours of India and Europe. “It was bloody great because, on those Indian and European runs, we weren’t really promoting anything so we weren’t really expecting really big numbers but the crowds were crazy in India and we ended up playing the biggest headlining shows we’ve ever done in London, Amsterdam, Paris and Germany so, yeah we were all really over the moon.”

With their latest release Asymmetry still kicking some serious goals both here and overseas, Hosking said the band were looking ahead to the next release, but added that they felt no pressure to rush the follow-up. “The thing is, we’re not the speediest songwriters - we never have been,” he said. “The kind of music we write is quite challenging, but we are writing, writing, writing.” Catch Karnivool at Newcastle Panthers on Friday, May 1. Tickets are on sale now via the band’s website karnivool.com.au

A Storey to tell Local muso Paul Storey has had 22 years experience in the music industry, performing with artists such as Rafael from Talk of the Town, in such bands as Splurge and Crossfire as well as such duos as Street Talk and Stage 2. Now Paul is back performing as a soloist who performs everything from laid-back acoustic music - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Crowded House, Bernard Fanning to upbeat pop and rock numbers - Hunters and Collectors, Dandy Warhols, Cold Chisel and Coldplay - that are sure to have even the most cynical punter tapping away with abandon. With a true emphasis on covering the original version of the songs with a mix of his own style and seasoned performer, there are few venues in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley that haven’t played host to this seasoned player.

Wilde’s Saxual Healing STEPHEN BISSET

W

ith Joe Camilleri, Kate Ceberano, Brian Cadd and Glenn Shorrock signing on for the 2015 iteration of the ever popular APIA Good Times Tour, the news last week that sax virtuoso Wilbur Wilde would be joining the tour for selected dates (including Newcastle) has made it even more of an enticing proposition. “It’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun,” Wilde told TE “The amount of great music those people have produced qis just amazing, so there’ll be plenty of hits on offer - also I’ve had a long musical association with Joe , going right back to 1977 and the Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons days so it’s always a great time when I get to play with one of my best musical mates.” Perhaps, best known as the long-serving sax player in the Hey Hey It’s Saturday house band (alongside Red Symons), Wilde has been a fixture of the Aussie popular music scene for the past 40 years

plying his trade in such outfits as Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons and Ol’ 55 and working with the likes of Cold Chisel, Tom Jones, Split Enz, James Morrison and Paul Kelly, however, he said that his chosen career path kind of took him by surprise. “So I studied music in secondary school and I ended up dropping out of uni to take more sax lessons,” he explained. “Anyway I was playing around a bit and I found myself up on the Gold Coast and I woke up one morning when I was about 25 and it just hit me ‘sh*t, I’m a sax player.’ I wouldn’t have it any other way, though because lyrics are just dead air between great tenor sax solos.” For Wilde, who has also dabbled in theatre, television, radio and film throughout his career, the thrill of getting onstage is still a pretty major drawcard. “I thrive on live performance,” he said. “In my career, I’ve been fortunate to have done some theatre, television film and radio but you just can’t beat getting up in front of a live audience because when you’re onstage it’s all about being in the now, man.” Catch The APIA Good Times tour at the Civic Theatre on Friday, May 8.

t was December last year that TE first paid a visit to Max’s Restaurant & Bar on Beaumont Street. It was summer time and the weather was fine and we ranted and raved about the gorgeous courtyard hidden out the back and all the balmy nights one could while away sipping vino and munching down on antipasto. With autumn now well and truly set in and winter fast approaching we decided to make a return to Max’s to see if this

venue delivered whatever the weather. With wind and rain nipping at our necks, last Sunday night, joined by my dining partner, coincidentally the same one I dined with late last year, I called in to Max’s seeking a winter-friendly meal. We we’re greeted by the friendly staff and shown to our table, pleasingly perched close to the glow of a rather substantial patio heater - a very warm welcome indeed. Since our last visit, the menu has changed slightly and now features more Italian options than ever before - a sure bet considering the place is owner by husband and wife hospitality duo Leo

and Janet Della Grotta, who also run the popular Pronto Pasta a little further down the road. For starters we order the paprika calamari and a tasting plate. A twist on the stock- standard salt and pepper squid you seem to find on nearly every café menu, the subtle hum that the paprika gave to these perfectly cooked little morsels, coupled with a zesty aioli really sets this dish apart. The tasting plate too was unique. The all-too-common feta cheese, flat bread and tapenades were nowhere to be found here. Instead, a selection of Italian favourites; cheesy arancini bites, delicious fried eggplant, and a hefty portion of thick, crispy toasted bread on which to stack your tomato and bean dip. We were still savouring the flavours of our starters when our mains arrived on the table. I opted for veal piselle. I’m not normally one to order veal, or piselle for that matter (peas for the uninitiated), so I’m not sure where the motivation for this selection came from but boy did it pay off. Thinly-sliced, perfectly tender veal fillet served with an indulgent creamy sauce, with peas, potato, eggplant and onion. These peas were impossibly sweet and cut through the creaminess of the sauce like a dream. My dining partner feasted on chicken breast, with bacon in a rich tomato sauce and was more than pleased with his dish. This winter menu is chock-full of takeno-prisoners comfort food so if you need your belly filled on one of these cold nights, go and see Max. Max’s Restaurant & Bar is open Tuesday to Sunday for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Head in on Tuesday night for $10 pizza and pasta.

Beyond music STEPHEN BISSET

W

hile most bands have dreams of fame, fortune and world domination when releasing albums, one Newcastle band is bucking that trend by using their music as a means to raise awareness on the importance of mental health. By Design, featuring Jayson Evans, Levi Dallen, Brent Ebeling and Dylan Booth, have just released their sophomore long player Reanimator alongside an accompanying short story on their website as a free download or via donation that the band plans to pass on to various mental health charities. Evans told TE that the album continues the story that commenced with their debut album Spaces. “Spaces was an album that described the feelings associated with loss and the depression that comes alongside it. In Spaces, these problems add up so much that it causes the character to literally move to another planet to get away from

it all, but upon landing he realises that his problems have followed him across galaxies,” he said. Reanimator continues the story where Spaces left off - upon arrival to the new planet. This album is much more of a concept album than the last, with each song describing the next chapter of the story. The character learns that whenever he tries to rebuild his life, he is set back to square one by monstrous creatures that inhabit the planet - creatures that are made up of the things that haunt the character from their past. He learns of a power source called Reanimator and

begins his journey to find it. The album tells the story of the search for the power to beat the demons of your past. Evans said that the ambitious project was one that was very close to his heart. “It has been a long time coming,” he said. “In around 2010, the band I was in disbanded and I basically decided to give up music, but one day I started writing again and around the same time I was diagnosed with depression so the stuff I was writing reflected that and when we released Spaces there was an alarming number of people who told me how well they related to the songs and how some

“small enough to care, large enough to entertain”

people’s decisions around suicide were directly influenced by the songs so we decided to delve deeper into the idea with Reanimator and it has been a very cathartic process.” For Evans, the modus operandi for By Design was to get the message out to people suffering from mental health issues, that they are not alone. “It’s not about sales for us - it’s about the message and we don’t really consider ourselves a band in the traditional sense but rather musical authors.” By Design’s Reanimator is available to download now via www.wearebydesign.co

Delicate sound of thunder STEPHEN BISSET

H

aving plyed his trade as frontman for such outfits as the Butterfly Effect A Thousand Needles in Red, Final Days of Autumn and Like Thieves, Brisbane-based singer songwriter Clint Boge has finally dipped his toe into solo waters with the release of his debut EP Songs of a Delicate Nature. The five-track EP is somewhat of a departure from Boge’s previous musical explorations, taking a much more softer approach that recalls the likes of Eddie Vedder’s softer moments, and City and Colour. “You really don’t have to do everything at 1000 decibels to get your point across,” Boge told TE while restringing a guitar. “And that’s what the EP is all about - a guy singing some really heartfelt and honest songs.” Boge said that the EP had been a long time coming - having started life in his outfit The Final days Of Autumn. “Yeah, the tracks were demoed with Final Days but then the band imploded

in on itself and I thought for a while that they wouldn’t see the light of day,” he explained. “But I ended up dusting them off and reworking them as a kind of cathartic, clearing out the pent- up artistry kind of exercise.” Given that much of Boge’s musical output had existed within the band dynamic, was stepping out from behind that safety net a daunting proposition? “After I left the Butters there were feelings of sheer panic and anxiety - but because there was a little bit of time pass, I felt as though it was more about Clint Boge - singer- songwriter than it was about Clint Boge from the Butterfly Effect so I basically set about playing a bunch of covers gigs to keep sharp and to gain confidence playing without the band so in that respect I was kind of ready for it.” “I mean I’m not playing to the same size crowds that The Butters were getting but at the end of the day I’d rather play to 100 people who are really into what I’m doing than 1000 who couldn’t really care either way.” Catch Clint Boge at the Cambridge Hotel on Wednesday, April 29.

My Imagination, playing all of the instruments and singing all the harmonies herself. Following on from the success of her 2014 album Fledgling, produced by Govinda Doyle (Angus and Julia Stone) Henning is certainly wasting no time with the release of the first single from her forthcoming, as-yet-untitled EP, Away From Me. Where here past releases Divisions and Fledgling were a beguiling slice of moody pop that drew favourable comparisons to the likes of Tori Amos and Sarah Blasko, the new single sees Henning dipping her toes into more upbeat pop territory. Henning’s backing band, formed in 2011 to coincide with the release of her Divisions EP at the Sydney Opera House, provide the perfect foil for her soaring vocals, creating a layered sound that traverses many musical territories. Catch Julia Henning at the Hamilton Station Hotel on Sunday, April 26.

Fly away with Henning opping up, seemingly out of nowhere, there is nothing holding back the Adelaide songstress Julia Henning who has already reached milestones many young acts could only dream of. To date, Julia Henning has completed two well- recieved national tours, won best song and best artist/band in the 2014 SA Fowler’s Live Music Awards, played the Sydney Opera House while a film crew capturing the whole experience for the documentary on her story so far, Julia Henning - Songs From The Deep End and she was also, recently invited to play WOMADelaide and received rave reviews from her stand out performance. MOVIE REVIEWS The Gunman [Rated MA]

While We’re Young [Rated M]

While the Taken franchise made a believable and bankable action star out of Liam Neeson, it would be surprising to see director Pierre Morel’s (who directed the first Taken flick) latest feature The Gunman, launch its star Sean Penn in the same direction. Penn stars as Terrier, a sniper on a mercenary assassination team who is forced into hiding after killing the minister of mines in the Congo. Eight years pass and Terrier finds himself back in the Congo, easing his conscience by digging wells in remote villages, but soon finds himself marked for assassination as retribution for his past crimes and what follows is a boarderhopping espionage mission. However, despite a great ensemble cast including Javier Bardem, Ray Winstone and Idris Elba, some great cinematography and some thrilling set-pieces, this is yet another by-the-numbers action flick. While Penn brings the same level of commitment that we’ve come to expect, to the surprisingly Stallone-esque Terrier role, it was hard to buy him as an action star as the script rarely gave him a chance to step outside the hackneyed “grizzled old gunman, in one last go-round’ trope.

Brooklyn-born Noah Baumbach the screenwriter behind Fantastic Mr Fox and Madagascar 3, brings us a clever and quirky rom-com/ drama that explores the big issue of aging. Ben Stiller stars as Josh, a middle-aged documentary filmmaker in a marriage going stale, who, by chance, strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young hipster couple, played by Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried. As Josh questions his future direction, he becomes awestruck by this pair of 20-something’s laissez faire approach to life. Soon Josh and his wife Cornelia, played by Naomi Watts, find themselves ditching dates with their baby-crazy married friends to attend hip-hop dance classes and ayahuasca ceremonies with their new favourite couple. There’s actually a lot more going on in this film than I initially thought there would be. Baumbach makes some interesting points about art and authenticity in an age where literally everyone is a content-maker and intellectual property is no longer sacrosanct and really hits the nail on the head with his portrayal of New York’s hipster elite. There are strong performances across the board here, too.

fter wowing Novocastrian ballet fans with their mesmeric production of The Nutcracker, the Moscow Ballet La Classique will be bringing another of Tachaikovsky’s best-known works to the Civic Theatre this week - Sleeping Beauty. First performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersberg in 1890, Tchaickovski’s second ballet has become one of the most enduring in history. The story starts with the celebration of Princess Aurora’s christening. But the King made a social faux-pas, forgetting to invite the evil fairy Carabosse. She turns up anyway, fuming, and puts a curse on Aurora. When she turns 16, the Princess will prick her finger and die. But the good Lilac Fairy comes to the rescue, and reduces the curse to 100 years of sleep. On her 16th birthday Aurora accidentally pricks her finger. A short century later, the dashing Prince Florimund stumbles on the old castle where Aurora slumbers.

He kisses her, breaking the spell. In the grand wedding scene, everyone dances and celebrates, and other fairy tale characters from different stories also take part. Elik Melikov, the founder and director of the Moscow Ballet La Classique was born in Baku, USSR. Later, he began to study fine arts and graduated from In the 1990’s Elik Melikov formed the Moscow Ballet La Classique drawing from the leading artists of the iconic Bolshoi Theatre. For many years the enterprise also manufactured sumptuous costumes and stage sets for clients including the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow, Moscow City Ballet, The Danish Royal Ballet and Boston Ballet Theatre. This production is a must for ballet afficionados and newcomers alike. The Moscow Ballet La Classique will perform Sleeping Beauty at the Civic Theatre on Thursday, April 23.
