The drawings develop and demonstrate the hybrid/multi-layered process where varying scale, juxtaposition of different forms, intertwined textures/tones are applied to reinvent and question the spatial conditions of drawings. His artworks explore a hybrid drawing technique combining both traditional media (ink, acrylic, and graphite) and digital media (algorithmic processing, scripting and image compositing with custom software ) .

An interview with Ryota Matsumoto

Whatartdoyoumostidentifywith? I am always inspired by artworks or illustrations that experiment with figure-ground relationship and question our depth/spatial perception. As I was educated as an architect, I am also influenced by the technotopian/dystopian visions of urbanism embraced by the group of visionary architects in the ’60s and early ’70s. But those elements are mostly reflected on the narrative aspects of my work rather than actual drawings.

Whatworkdoyoumostenjoyingdoing? I am interested in how I can explore a hybrid drawing technique and work with the benefit of both the analogue and the digital effectively. I enjoy mapping out my own working process prior to working on each drawing.

Whatthemesdoyoupursue? I think we are well aware of the impending/multidimentional issues of society and environment in which we live in today and all the contradictions that crop up in the course of inquiries. They may not appear obvious, but are certainly the undercurrent themes of my work.

What’syourfavoriteartwork? I admire and respect any art works that push boundaries and defy expectations in terms of medium, composition, technical innovation and style.

Whatmemorableresponseshaveyouhadtoyourwork? I am still not certain what people think of my work. They all give varied impressions on my work based on their distinctive viewpoints.

Describeareal-lifesituationthatinspiredyou? I was born in Japan, but had spent the considerable time of my childhood in Hong Kong. To witness the city transforming itself as one of the most thriving place in Asia during 70’s firsthand, it inspired me a great deal both culturally and artistically.

Whatjobshaveyoudoneotherthanbeinganartist? I also work as a designer and urban planner.

Istheartisticlifelonely?Whatdoyoudotocounteractit? I don’t think the artistic life is lonely at all. It is actually a great way to be connected with creative people. I believe that it is important for me to keep a positive outlook in life regardless of my circumstance, if I would like to stay productive.I think art, architecture and design are the best fields to acknowledge and make use of our individual experiences and stock of knowledge to the full extent.
