Post & Voice Candidates Forum scheduled for Oct. 4 From Staff Reports The Post & Voice Candidates Forum for the November election will be held Oct. 4, 7 p.m. at the Pender County Government Annex in Hampstead.

As customary, the Forum will include all candidates on the November ballot that are exclusive to Pender County. This year, the N.C. House District 16 candidates will also be invited to participate. Both John Johnson and Carson Smith live in

Pender County. “Since Pender County is in House District 16, and both candidates are residents, it is appropriate to invite Smith and Johnson to the forum,� said Post & Voice Publisher Andy Pettigrew.

This election, Pender County residents local ballot will include three seats on the Board of Commissioners, three seats on the School Board, and the office of Sheriff of Pender County. The Clerk of Supe-

rior Court is running unopposed.

Residents attending the Forum will be able to submit questions for the candidates. Each candidate will have the opportunity for an opening statement. “This Forum will be the same format that we have used many times in the past.

It’s not a debate, but an opportunity for candidates to express their ideas and voters to see them face to face,� Pettigrew said.

As in the past, other candidates on the November ballot that are not local to Pender County may introduce themselves and speak for a specified time. The North Carolina Constitution Party, recognized officially by the state elections board in June, will have two candidates on the ballot in Pender County for the November election. There are 12 Constitution Candidates on ballots across the state.

According to its webstie, the party recognizes seven essential core values: life, religious freedom, traditional family, private property rights, por-Second Amendment, anti-socialism and national sovereignty.

David Fallin, who nearly defeated Pender County Commission chairman George Brown in the May Republican Primary, is on

Peggy Lanier the ballot in the U.S. House of Representatives District 7 race. Fallin faces Republican encumbent David Rouzer and Democrat Kyle Horton.

Fallin lost to Brown by 30 votes with nearly 4,000 cast.

Challenging Brown in

the November election is Constitution Party canidate Peggy Lanier.

Lanier has lived in Pender County since 2003 and is married to Samuel Lanier, who is originally from Maple Hill.

Lanier owned a successful termite and pest control business for 10 years when she lived in Virginia. She said that she sold the business to move to Pender County and to be closer to her family. She also served as the Pastor Parrish Relation Chair of Rocky Point Methodist Church for six years. “I am well-versed in the everyday operations of a business, including managing employees and ensuring a balanced budget along with a stable and progressive financial plan. In addition to that, I’ve acquired

a tremendous amount of knowledge and insight and inner workings of the relationships and needs of our county,� said Lanier.

The N.C. Department of Transportation announced Aug. 30 the total Hampstead bypass project has now been fully funded.

Pender County Commissioner David Piepmeyer, who represents the county on the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization, announced the funding in an email.

Peipmeyer said “funding for both sections (13 miles of new four-lane divided highway) of Hampstead Bypass has finally been formally approved.

While design of both sections is in its final stages and land acquisition is well underway, this clears the path to allow construction to be begin in 2020 with completion coming in 2025. “This is the biggest project in Division 3 and it is being funded in large part because of the regional support it received from the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization as well as the NCDOT Division 2 and 3. I know that 2025 seems like a long time in the future but this has been greatly accelerated and is a much better date than was forecasted in the original plan.�

would like to ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability; and strive for an open and transparent government, as allowed. She wants to foster a collaborative working relationship with the Board of Education, and she is a proponent of increasing funding for additional patrol deputies. She is an advocate for supplements for teachers, and is supportive of a competitive salary for county employees. However, she is not an advocate of raising taxes.

Lanier also believes that County Commissioners should have a policy and procedures manual. Since most people work until 5 o’clock, she said that she would promote changing the times of the Commissioners’ meetings from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. “I’d like to restore integrity, respect and trust back to the seat,� said Lanier.

Trash on Topsail Island Congratulations to the Town of Surf City for removing trash receptacles from the beach prior to this summer season. Trash on the beach has been reduced, since the North Carolina winds are no longer spreading it from overflowing cans onto the beach and into the ocean.

This may be a step, although a small one, toward implementing a “Leave No Trace” policy, just as the state and federal parks in North Carolina have done.

Assuming that moving to “carry in, carry out” is not practical at this time, the Surf City governing body should look at the beach trash as just another aspect of a garbage crisis engulfing their portion of Topsail Island which, they need to address.

There are four contributors to the problem: sAbsentee Landlords: Those who collect rents from vacationers but have no real interest in the quality of life on Topsail Island beyond the convenience of a local bank to deposit their rent check. s6ACATIONERS People who visit the island for a week in the summer and, perhaps well intentioned, either fail to move a trash can to the street on the appropriate day or fail to ever bring an emptied can in. s7EEKEND (OMEOWNERS Those who own a home on the island and visit on weekends. Rather than simply take a weekend’s trash home they either put their can out when they leave, knowing it will be on the street until they return, or sneak it into the public cans at the beach access. s4HE 4OWN OF 3URF #ITY Which continues to believe that they are a quaint little fishing village rather than a rapidly growing city with a burgeoning population of full time residents whose quality of life is affected daily by the failure of the town to enforce its own rules.

Let’s look at a few possible solutions for Surf City. s4RASH #ONTRACT Waste Management is the exclusive trash hauler for Surf City, with an agreement that expires in June of 2020. Assuming that this is a profitable contract for Waste Management, perhaps the current pickup schedule can be modified. Waste Management, after all, did work with the town to arrange Friday pickup of the beach crossover cans during this summer.

Right now a vacationer who arrives on Saturday with his family finds that the family who left that morning has filled the cans with a week’s worth of garbage. This can will not be emptied until Wednesday if the house is at the North End, Tuesday, or Monday in other parts of town. The vacationer has no choice but to place household trash in plastic bags next to the already full can. It is unsightly, gives off disgusting odors, and attracts rats, birds, and other wildlife.

Someone in authority needs to meet with Waste Management, explain the problem, and seek to move trash collection on the island – ideally to Saturday, but to Friday or Monday island-wide. If Waste Management cannot help in finding a solution the town should fulfill its contract obligations, but place future collection contracts out for bid with Saturday pickup as a requirement. s%NFORCEMENT n Surf City has ordinances on the books which address some of these issues, including a requirement that Condo/Co-Op buildings with more than six residential units have dumpsters as opposed to multiple trash and recycling cans, but the town enforces nothing. During the last budget cycle the governing body turned a deaf ear to residents requests that a “code enforcement” officer position be established to begin addressing these issues. Instead, a valiant effort spearheaded by two councilpersons produced a letter to residents promising “proactive enforcement” of numerous code violations. Enforcement by whom? To date no provision has been made for the enforcement of code violations.

Criminal violations will be handled by Police, fire code violations by the Fire Department, and property violations by who? No doubt an add-on responsibility for a person who is already performing a full time job. s2ECYCLING n It is obvious when taking a walk around Surf City that many of the overflowing cans are filled with plastic water bottles, beer cans, soda cans, and cardboard. Most residents are good about sorting recyclables, as are many vacationers. Unfortunately, the Town’s position on recycling is somewhat unclear. While single-family residences have a pretty green recycling can, there are no recycling cans at the beach crossover, there appears to be no requirement for recycling in the commercial establishments which serve food and beverages, and there is no effort to encourage people to separate items before they dispose of them. Recycling could take an enormous amount of trash out of the waste stream, not clog the landfills, and help protect marine life.

Shooting the moon

Bill Messer An article in Time Magazine has four names for the August moon; the “green corn” moon, the “grain” moon, the “red” moon and the “sturgeon” moon. Whatever it is, I have pictures.

I went out just as it climbed above the horizon last night, around nine, and it was beautiful, still

in the layer of evening haze and it was slightly tinted orange, looking like the precursor to the harvest moon, which is the September moon nearest the autumnal equinox, the time of equal day and night.

It was large and orange because of the layer of haze, but the picture was not as sharp, not as “crisp” as it could have been. When I got up Monday morning, the moon was still full, and it was high in the sky overhead, above the ground haze, and shining bright.

I got the coffee going (first things first) and stumbled out into the dark with camera and flashlight.

Citizens, cleaning crews, and crime fighters While everyone was grilling and buying beer and traveling and otherwise preparing for the Labor Day holiday, I was already observing a much more staid, but meaningful celebration.

Saturday was International Vulture Day, a day set aside to honor the 20-plus species of flying cleanup crewmembers who work regardless of weather, and rarely receive the accolades they deserve. We have two species of vultures (or buzzards, if you prefer) in North Carolina, both the majestic, native turkey vulture and the less refined white-wing variety. Like Yankees and Californians, the white winged vultures are an invasive species, so we cannot expect them to have the manners of a native Carolinian. The fact that our native, red-headed turkey vultures have white underwings is ever a matter of confusion, but the general rule is that larger buzzards with red, scaly heads are natives, and the others unwelcome tourists.

I admit – I really like buzzards. They are not afraid to do the jobs no one else wants, and they do their best, namely cleaning up the roadsides and uncovered gutpiles of successful hunts. They fiercely protect their young – bachelor male buzzards have been known to assist widowed mother buzzards in feeding and nurturing hatchlings.

I have long envied the people who have carried on the first job that God gave Adam in the Garden of Eden, specifically the naming of critters. Etymologists provide us with several names for a group of vultures. A boil refers to a pair of buzzards, so it’s apropos that two or more produce a kettle. The most common name is a wake, which makes perfect sense, considering their association with death. A preferred gathering spot is not always a roost, but usually called a venue.

Contrary to popular belief, a gather of buzzards is not officially called a congress, or the General Assembly, for that matter.

Another thing I like about Cathartes aura is that they are eminently practical when it comes to personal defense.

While a buzzard has no desire to fight, they will enter into mortal combat with a vengeance if they are required to do so. Usually they are very passive,

Jefferson Weaver patient birds (yet another quality to appreciate, that we humans should share), but if threatened with no way out, a buzzard will begin to drool, then – forgive the indelicacy – projectile vomit on an adversary. Whilst the talons and beak of the average buzzard should be enough to give anyone pause, the threat of biological warfare is enough to make the most aggressive enemy sure for peace.

Since the last time I sang the praises of the “Deacon Bird,” I have come across a few more examples of the efficacy of a vulture’s defense systems, including one that showed a remarkable concern for his community.

It seems that some ne’er-do-wells in a neighboring county committed during a string of armed robberies back in the late 30s, and were giving law enforcement fits as they hit country stores, post offices and at least one well-known bootlegger. A trooper with our fledgling N.C. Highway Patrol spotted the suspect’s vehicle on a baked clay road, and turned around. The car was easily identified by the bullet holes in the fenders and the bad guys waving their firearms.

Can I inherit my parent’s debt?

Dear Savvy Senior, What happens to a person’s debt after they die? My mother has taken on a lot of medical and credit card over the past few years and I’m worried that my brother and I will be responsible for it when she dies. What can you tell me?

Worried Daughter Dear Worried, In most cases when a person with debt dies, it’s their estate, not their kids, that is legally responsible.

Here’s how it works.

When your mom dies, her estate – which consists of the stuff she owns while she’s alive (home, car, cash, etc.) – will be responsible for paying her debts. If she doesn’t have enough cash to pay her debts, you’ll have to sell her assets and pay off her creditors with the proceeds.

Whatever is left over is passed along to her heirs as dictated by the terms of her will, if she has one.

If she doesn’t have a will, the intestacy laws of the state she resides in will determine how her estate will be distributed.

If, however, she dies b ro ke, o r t h e re i s n’ t enough money left over to pay her “unsecured debts” – credit cards, medical bills, personal loans – then her estate is declared insolvent, and her creditors will have to eat the loss.

“Secured debts” – loans attached to an asset such as a house or a car – are a different story. If she

has a mortgage or car loan when she dies, those monthly payments will need to be made by her estate or heirs, or the lender can seize the property.

There are, however, a couple of exceptions that would make you legally responsible for her debt after she passes away. One is if you are a joint holder on a credit card account that she owes on. And the other is if you co-signed a loan with her.

Note to spouses: These same debt inheritance rules apply to surviving spouses too, unless you live in a community property state – Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington or Wisconsin. In these states, any debts that one spouse acquires after the start of a marriage belongs to the other spouse too. Therefore, spouses in community property states are usually responsible for their deceased spouses debts.

Protected assets If your mom has any IRAs, 401(k)s, brokerage accounts, life insurance policies or employer-based pension plans, these are assets that creditors usually cannot get access to.

That’s because these accounts typically have designated beneficiaries, and the money goes directly to those people without pass-

ing through the estate.

Settling Her Estate You also need to be aware that if your mom dies with debt, and she has no assets, settling her estate should be fairly simple. Her executor will need to send out letters to her creditors explaining the situation, including a copy of her death certificate, and that will probably take care of it.

But, you and your brother may still have to deal with aggressive debt collectors who try to guilt you into paying.

If your mom has some assets, but not enough to pay all her debts, her state’s probate court has a distinct list of what bills get priority. The details vary by state, but generally estate administrating fees, funeral expenses, taxes and last illness medical bills get paid first, followed by secured debts and lastly, credit card debts.

Blatant pretention is as annoying to me as the rogue pooper in a community swimming pool. It seems that we’ve become increasingly removed from our roots and self-absorbed in the illusion that we are more intellectual than our predecessors.

We snub the primitive habits of our forebears, drinking in the belief that an ivy-league college experience or the luxury of overpaying for a brand places us on a higher existential platform.

Cute bistro restaurants are popping up all over, marketing their farm to table menus as justification for ridiculous pricing.

Is this a new creation, birthed from the cellulite free loins of organic free thinkers?

Well, my grandparents lived this ideal, raising and growing the delicious food that decorated the family’s table every day. Grandma’s collards were among the best I’ve ever eaten, and anyone who was hungry was welcome to come into her kitchen and enjoy a bowl for free.

So, how does a restaurant legitimately charge $10 for a side item of these greens? More importantly, why does anyone pay that much for a bowl of chopped leaves? But, is it organic? Yes, and so is that yummy steak which came from a large, juicy cow.

Take bacon, for instance. Bacon is amazing.

Salty and crunchy, it can be baked, fried or microwaved. Bacon can greatly improve a sandwich and provides a smattering of flavor in an otherwise boring salad. Bacon has been enjoyed for centuries by all classes and cultures, providing energy to build and destroy kingdoms.

Bacon is good, yet it has come under scrutiny in recent years as attempts have been made to denigrate this amazing food. Unfortunately for the turkeys, some food chemist in a world devoid of rainbows began playing around with the idea of bacon made from turkey. That’s like meeting the drag queen version of Dolly Parton.

Call it bacon, try to make it look like bacon, but don’t pretend it tastes like real bacon.

The folks who eat turkey strips with a grin claiming they hardly notice a difference have been brainwashed. A friend of mine, in fact, has been trying for years to convert me to meatless alternatives, offering up her hummus dogs and kale cupcakes to save me from a life of meat debauchery.

To humor her, I’ve tried a few things in her Bento Box, but when she tried to sprinkle hickory smoked coconut flakes on top of my cheeseburger, I came unglued. To pretend that Continued on page 4A

Messer Continued from page 3A It’s amazing how every exposed root in the sandy driveway looks just like a big snake.

As I set the tripod up and focused the camera, I heard the night noises, and the most amazing bird sounds, tropical, exotic, something not out of place in an old Tarzan movie.

Perseverance paid off, and the photos show much more detail without as much of the intervening layer of earth’s atmosphere.

“Shutterbug” (from Wikipedia): “An enthusiastic amateur photographer, an avid hobbyist in the field of vernacular photography.”

Well, from that I learned the most apt description for my own personal style of photography, and I couldn’t make a better description, ‘vernacular’ photography, and like language, vernacular can refer to the photography of the people, as opposed to the photography of commerce, or the photography of the art houses.

I was inspired ever since I read the first copy of “Foxfire”, the work of Eliot Wigginton and his high school students in Rabun County, Ga. The students took cameras and tape recorders to their families and neighbors to document the daily affairs of ordinary life, and produced volume after volume of their collected works.

I have ten of them, and they are the framework behind my enthusiastic pursuit of what people see and do in Pender County – rural commerce and agricultural life, fishing of all kinds, ordinary people who went off and performed amazing feats, often in the military and wartime, and the people who kept the homefires burning during tough times.

In 1956, my mother redeemed 1¾ books of S&H Green Stamps for my first camera, a 35mm with a real plastic lens. How do I know plastic? I dropped the camera once and the lens popped out. No harm, I wiped it off and put it back in place, and snapped the retaining ring back in. I still have two photographs from the first roll of film, some ducks on a pond, and a bloomed-out rose bush.

It wasn’t long before I started developing my own film (Boy Scout merit badge, likely), and shared my early basic darkroom efforts (blankets over windows, smelly chemicals), improving equipment over time until I went to work in a commercial photographer’s studio, developing and reloading all the film, and occasionally getting a photo assignment.

When I came home from the Navy, I brought back, from Japan and Hong Kong, the equipment I had only dreamed of in my early days, but had so much money in the fine cameras I hardly ever used them. I got several $25 pawn shop cameras, had one in the car, another in

the boat, another in the motorcycle bag. I always had a camera handy, bought film in 100 ft rolls, loaded my own cassettes, and found the secret to taking good, sometimes even great, photos, and that was to shoot lots of pictures and pick out only the best ones to print. I made a ‘contact sheet’ of every roll of film by laying all the negatives on top of a sheet of photo paper and developing that, easier to see the pictures in positive than negative.

I had a shoot-to-keep ratio of probably 1 in 100.

Years later, by the time I had acquired the ‘dream darkroom’ equipment, the photo world changed to digital.

Now instead of having a shoebox full of snapshots, boxes of photo prints, folders of contact sheets, I have a collection of memory cards and hard drives.

Every spring, after suffering through the winter and longing for the return of warm weather walks in Holly Shelter, my single minded pursuit is for the first flash of purple/blue that is the dwarf iris, as perfect as its taller cousins but only a few inches tall.

Every spring, I chase the ‘trophy’ iris, the one that would appear on the cover of National Geographic if only they appreciated the little wildflower in its radiant glory when the light hits it ‘just so’.

Summer brings the Venus’ flytraps, all the varieties of pitcher plants, and rose pogonia, the pretty little orchid that rivals the beauty of the nursery orchids, just smaller.

And then the gates close the gamelands for the summer.

They are about to open again, and the search will begin for the ‘trophy’ red

pine lily, the ‘trophy’ autumn gentian, and a ‘trophy’ grass-of-parnassus.

I have about ten years worth of nearly identical dwarf iris pictures, hundreds, and hundreds more of each and every one of my favorite wildflowers.

I think all this single minded enthusiasm might point to the need for a selfhelp group of some sort, but I’m not alone. I meet others doing the same thing, easy to spot because they’re usually stooped over looking at things on the ground, and easy to tell apart from the birders who stumble around with their heads craned upward.

People come from far away too, and sometimes I meet people who came for a week at the beach but also spend time in the woods. Birdwatchers are the worst, I mean, just how many pictures of the prothonotary warbler could a person possibly need?

Yes, I know, “He that is without sin, let him cast the first stone,” we are cautioned, and I realize I have a couple of hundred assorted pictures of the tufted titmouse, on the feeder or in the birdbath, even movies, and lots, lots more of assorted black-capped chickadees, cardinals and wrens. And dragonflies. And cicadas.

And spiders, fiddler crabs and egrets.

Once in a while a particular picture really stands out, a good picture, and once that happens, you’re hooked, and you want another. And another.

That’s why I keep shooting the moon.

That’s why I feel compelled to take pictures of the full moon every time I can, just in case it’s better than the ones before. It may be irrational, but it’s fun.

Even if it is derived from a plant grown on an Oregon hillside, the real possibility exists that those lush plants were helped along by the excrement of a meaty critter. Now, that is something to consider.

Don’t get me wrong.

I have nothing against vegetarians or vegans, although I’ve met a few of the latter who were a tad aggressive. In fact, adopting some of their eating habits would likely result in a healthier me. It’s the militant herbivores out there who make me cringe.

The pig defending protestors who look down at the average ham consumer as primitive devours of meat need to stand down.

Don’t glance at my ham, turkey and bacon club and ask, “Do you know what that’s doing to your body?

How can you eat that?”

And, no, I don’t wish to

taste your hummus filled lettuce leaf infused with lemongrass.

As an evolved human, it is my responsibility to maintain the culinary legacy of my ancestors.

My molars are designed to rip into something more substantial than a soy patty. Even though I don’t have to run from wooly mammoths, my chaotic life requires much more than a chickpea muffin can provide. So, my vegan friends, if you don’t guilt me with pictures of pre-processed piggies loitering in an overcrowded pen, I won’t be forced to slip a bacon bit into your seaweed salad.

Education Schools focus on reducing e-cigarette use As Nor th Carolina’s tobacco-free schools law marks its 10th anniversary, the state has seen cigarette smoking reduce 50 percent among high schoolers since 2008.

But the latest N.C. Youth Tobacco Survey, published in June, shows that more than 16 percent of North Carolina high school students use e-cigarettes, and 23 percent stated they are considering use of these products in the coming year.

Given this trend — and with a new school year beginning — the state is updating its signage in North Carolina public schools to remind students and staff that all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are banned from use on school g rounds and at schoolsponsored events.

“E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco product among youth, and their use has increased exponentially,” said Dr. Susan Kansagra, chief of the Chronic Disease and Injury Section in DHHS’ Division of Public Health. “While we’ve reduced cigarette use, the use of e-cigarettes by youth

overall and especially on campus is a public health threat. Schools are reporting they are commonly confiscating e-cigarettes.”

To ensure school emp l oye e s, s t u d e n t s a n d visitors are aware of the tobacco-free schools law, the Division of Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch is working with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to update tobacco-free signs in North Carolina schools. Ecigarettes were not depicted on the original signs, put in place in 2008.

“Addressing e-cigarette use among young people is an important public health priority, as they contain nicotine, are addictive and can impact brain development,” Dr. Kansagra said. “Further, young people who use ecigarettes are more likely to smoke cigarettes in the future than those who do not use e-cigarettes, thereby increasing their risk of heart disease, lung disease and many cancers.”

Since the law was enacted, North Carolina’s high school cigarette smoking rate has decreased from

19 percent in 2007 to 8.9 percent in 2017 “Prohibiting the use of tobacco products in schools has contributed to the reduction in cigarette smoking among high school students,” said Jim Martin, director of policy and programs for the Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch.

“That’s not a coincidence.

An early study by the Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch showed that schools with tobacco-free policies had fewer students smoking, and the rates dropped more the longer those policies were in place.”

The decline in cigarette smoking by high school students has contributed to a reduction in adult smoking as well. North Carolina’s adult smoking rate has fallen from 22.9 percent in 2007 to 17.9 percent in 2016.

Changes announced to help reduce testing for states’ youngest students As many students in Nor th Carolina public schools begin school this week, State Superintendent Mark Johnson announced that he has taken steps to reduce the time spent testing for many of the state’s youngest scholars. The move follows a survey (pdf, 101kb) Johnson sent to teachers last school year that showed that 76 percent of North Carolina teachers think their students are tested too much.

“One of my top priorities is to reduce the time you must spend assessing and testing students,” Johnson said in a message to elementary-grade educators Friday. “Your input guides our work. We want to give you time back to do what you entered the profession to do: teach.”

Past guidance from the Department of Public Instruction resulted in strict requirements for how often kindergarten through third-grade teachers had to assess students via the mCLASS reading diagnostic tool, which is used in all but a few North Carolina kinderg ar ten-throughthird-grade classrooms.

New guidance issued for this school year moves those from requirements to recommendations and

allows for more teacher discretion in the state’s Read to Achieve program.

Following up on Johns o n ’s u s e o f Re a d t o Achieve funds to purchase new Apple iPad devices for use in K-3 classrooms, the department has made additional content available to allow teachers to monitor second- and third-grade students’ reading progress online while the students work independently. This represents a major step toward replacing testing with personalized learning. But devices can be used for more than monitoring progress with the reading diagnostic tool.

“Teachers can access a wealth of early-reading resources via their devices,” said Pamela Shue, deputy superintendent for early education. “In addition to the time-saving policies and the new, more rigorous book-set provided statewide, we’ve made other options available. For example, schools may opt to use a few additional measures, which combined with the existing Read to Achieve assessments, provide extra screening for students at risk of reading difficulties, including dyslexia.”

Sea Turtle Hospital News

Topsail Island is famous, or infamous for its long history as a favorite place for pirates to hang out.

So speculating that there might be a buccaneer at the turtle hospital is not entirely crazy.

Pirate, a young Kemp’s Ridley was rescued by boaters on the uninhabited side of Bald Head Island and admitted April 7 of this year with a head wound so horrific that it made even some of our long-term volunteers step away in distress. We can only guess how it happened, but once a turtle comes in the how takes a back seat to what do we do about it.

At the hospital we could see that Pirate’s injury involved the left side of his head and that the left eye had been displaced. The wound was extensive so it was difficult to assess the extent of the injury beyond the obvious. There are just so many important things in the head and no way to even guess what was really going on.

It seems that our most difficult cases arrive on weekends and Pirate was no exception. Our regular turtle vet, Dr. Harms was not available, so Jean got in touch with Dr. Greg Lewbart at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) regarding the extensive injuries to Pirate.

Arrangements were made to take the turtle to CVM for a more extensive evaluation and treatment. An ophthalmologist, Dr. Westermeyer and his staff were also put on alert to see if there might be a possibility of saving the injured eye.

As always, the emergency team at CVM responded to the needs of this turtle.

It was at this point that Pirate got his name: he arrived with a jaunty bandage over the left side of his head reminiscent of a pirate bandana and eye patch. As happy as we were to see Pirate the news that came with him was even better – his brain case, eye and salt gland were intact!

At least we were starting his rehab from a relatively good place.

Pirate’s daily treatment was quite extensive and took a lot of time. But when we’re working on turtles the clock is the last thing we look at. What we were more interested in seeing was the progress Pirate was making, and you could see improvement on a daily basis. This turtle clearly wanted to get better – fast – and his voracious appetite was expediting his recovery. Soon his wound had closed enough to get him

back into water, and not long after that to move him into Sea Turtle Bay, the last stop before release and a chance to meet his adoring public during tours.

Pirate is currently receiving some basic fluff and buff maintenance several times a week. Maybe we should order an eye patch from Amazon to complete the look for his big day.

We’re on our summer tour schedule, open daily (EXCEPT Wednesdays and Sundays) from Noon – 4 PM for only one more week.

Be ginning the week of September 16th we move to our fall schedule/hours of two days a week when we open only on Thursdays and Saturdays from 1 - 4 PM. Now that the kids are back in school our lines have become a bit shorter so it’s a good time to visit.

The tour takes about 30-40 minutes once inside the doors so plan your schedule accordingly.

focus on reducing highstakes testing in a variety of ways, including urging the State Board of Education to eliminate certain tests in grades K-5 caused by board policies rather than state or federal law.

Johnson also will work to change DPI policies around how end-of-year tests are administered based on educator feedback and his own experience serving as an EOG proctor in May. “Teachers and parents have been telling me that the tests are too long, the testing environment is too stressful, and the rules placed on students, teachers, and volunteer proctors are unreasonably strict,” Johnson said. “Last year I saw it for myself when I proctored a test in a fourthgrade classroom.

“I can’t change federal law about standardized testing. But where we can, we will be revising the testing protocols to remove unnecessarily strict guidelines to alleviate at least some of the stress and disruption that testing causes in the early grades.”

Many of the changes in testing protocols and guidelines will be in effect before students take end-of-course and end-ofgrade exams for this school year.

Pirate defense, passing comes alive in 40-6 win at Dixon

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer One year ago the Topsail High School football team got off to a 4-0 start in the season only to see a lack of ability on the defensive side of the ball fail to contain the outside speed of the six of the next eight opposing teams – resulting in that 4-0 start deteriorating into a 5-5 campaign that included just one win (1-6) in the Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference.

The four wins in 2017 came over Trask (24-0), Pender (34-6), Dixon (47-0), and a White Oak team (4213) that finished 2-9.

So far this season history has repeated itself as Topsail stands at 3-0 with wins over Trask (24-0), Pender (54-7), and Dixon

(40-6) – three teams with a combined record of 0-9 – with one more non-conference game at White Oak (2-1 with a 53-8 win over Dixon) this Friday remaining before conference play begins.

That comparison makes it hard to define just where the 2018 Pirates stand, but the certainty is the next three games – at White Oak, at Hoggard (9-21) after a bye week, and home against defending 3A state champion New Hanover (9-28) – will go a long way in assessing which direction lies ahead.

But the optimistic side says there are two things that have changed – and improved – from 2017.

The first is the defense is quicker and stronger, and the second the notoriously

run-happy Pirates have come up with a passing game to complement their fine stable of running backs.

Cougars outlast Titans

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The first half of the South Brunswick Cougars -Heide Trask Titans football game played out as well as the Titan coaching staff could have planned.

The home team Titans scored on every offensive possession that they had in the first 24 minutes and they played relatively mistake free football.

However, the lack of depth on the roster and the hot and humid temperatures caught up with the Titans in the second half. South Brunswick outscored Trask 35 to 6 in the final 12 minutes to take a 47-30 win. “Depth is a problem without a doubt,� said Trask head Coach Johnathan Taylor. “But we have no excuses. We can’t allow fatigue to break us. We have to find a way to finish.�

Trask found the end zone on their opening drive with senior fullback Zion Cruse rumbling in

from 16-yards out. The two point conversion was good and the Titans were off and running. That would be the first of three straight drives in the first half that produced touchdowns and successful two point conversions.

The Cougars answered the score with one of its own, but the conversion failed.

Sophomore Reggie Carr scored on a spectacular 50yard run on Trask’s next possession. To increase the lead to 16-6. Carr’s older brother Antonio scored the Titans third touchdown on a four-yard plunge and the Titans were up 24-6.

South Brunswick scored for the second time in the first half with 45 seconds left but again failed to convert the two point attempt.

The Titans were one half of football away from earning their first win of the season.

In My Opinion I have stood on the sidelines of literally hundreds of high school football games. I have watched many things unfold and watched as many games are won and lost on fluke plays.

I have also witnessed many injuries.

Heck, I watched Pender High school use the phantom injury to perfection for two years.

Every time the Pats appeared to be getting winded, a player would go down and the game would stop. The trainer would go out and after a few minutes the player would be helped off the field only to return shortly.

I watched last week as the Pender Patriot players cramped during the loss to Union. In fact, several Union players cramped as well. The week before the Trask football team very likely lost a game due to starters cramping up and being led to the sidelines to be stretched.

Both Pender and Trask are thin depth wise and cannot afford to have players on the sidelines for any extended amount of time.

All of this led to a conversation on the sidelines with my editor Andy Pettigrew. Both of us played the game and have been around the game for years. We have come to the conclusion that whatever the high schools are doing just ain’t working anymore.

Any athlete knows that hydrating starts way early. In fact, a football player should be

hydrating every day. It seems as if these young men are not following the coach’s instructions.

I like to refer to the things in my past as back in the day. So, here we go. Back in the day the coaches preached salt pills. These tabs of salt were always available to us.

If it was hot you would be told to make sure and take your salt pills. They were usually in jugs or such and there were hundreds of them.

Our blood pressure may have been 175 over 130 but we weren’t cramping. Back in the day if you cramped it meant you weren’t full of sodium.

Nowadays its pickle juice and mustard. I don’t know the specifics of either one, but the coaches believe in it. Maybe, that’s why I don’t cramp. Heck, I eat enough mustard on my hot dogs to keep a whole team from cramping.

I don’t recall when things changed or when they quit using salt pills.

I guess they have a good reason for it. Meanwhile, can we get someone to help stretch Johnny’s calves out. He’s cramping again.

Much has been made about the fact that the Pender Patriot football team is short on numbers and has but four seniors on their small roster. However, Coach Tim Smith has made no excuses and will continue to look for positive things in his teams play. That was evident last week when his underdog Patriots stuck it to the Union Spartans in the first half of their nonconfer-

ence matchup before running out of gas in the final 24 minutes. The result was a 40-17 loss. Smith took no solace in losing but saw some improvement in his teams play. “Our focus is to get better. We played hard tonight but its hard for these young kids to play 160 plays or more in a game. We’re going to keep working on getting more physical.�

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The high school soccer schedule was light last week with Trask and Topsail only playing one match apiece. The Pender Patriots played twice last week.

The Heide Trask Titan kickers hosted a very good Laney Buccaneer team. They found the going tough, falling 9-0. Ramone Cisneros had 10 saves for the Titans.

The Titans are 1-4-1 heading into the final week of their nonconference slate. They were at North Brunswick on Tuesday and at Topsail on Wednesday.

Speaking of Topsail, The Pirates (1-2) had a rare week off last week as they prepared for their next match, a home nonconference affair against Pender

county rival Trask Thursday (Sept. 6).

The schedule picks up next week with a MidEastern 3A/4A Conference home game against 3A foe South Brunswick Tuesday (Sept. 11) and a road conference game at Hoggard Thursday (Sept. 13).

The Pender Patriot kickers played twice last week.

They ran into a buzz saw in the North Brunswick Scorpions. The Brunswick County crew handed the Pats a 6-0 loss.

Two days later Jose Morales scored the only goal of the game as the Pats took a 1-0 win over South Columbus.

Pender is now 5-3 overall. They are idle this week and will return to the pitch on the 10th at Dixon in what will be their Coastal 8 opener.

Pender County teams hit the road

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Week four is upon us and the three county high schools will finish up their non-conference slate this week.

Trask at Union The Titans blew a 24-6 lead last week against South Brunswick while Union stumbled through the first three quarters of play before pulling away from a game Pender squad.

The Spartans have a couple of good backs in Emari Carter and Travone Robinson along with 6’4’’ quarterback Cole Bass.

That being said, the Patriot defense did a good job of keeping them in check until late in the contest.

The Titans simply ran out of gas against South Brunswick. The lack of depth hurt the team. As the season progresses and players get dinged up this could become a major problem.

Trask can run the football. As Jake Johnson gets better reading the defense, so should the option offense. The Titans rushed for over 400 yards last

week.

The Carr brothers, Antonio and Reggie along with senior bruiser Zion Cruse should be able to expose the Spartan defense.

The key will be how the Titans handle themselves in the second half.

Look for the Titans to run wild against what appears to be a suspect Spartan run defense. Johnson gets his 100 yards and Cruse runs over defenders. Don’t be surprised if the Titans rack up over 400 yards of offense for the second time in as many weeks.

The Titan defense took a step back last week. They return to form this week.

The Titans will win this game. The score: Trask 42Union 18.

Pender at Rosewood Rosewood is 2-1 while the Patriots are 0-3. The Eagles are sporting a defense that has not allowed a rushing touchdown in 12 consecutive quarters.

They demolished an undermanned Spring Creek team last week and held them to just 46 yards of offense.

Pender’s defense showed some improve-

ment last week before running out of gas. This will be yet another test for the undermanned Patriots.

Lavell Henry is a very good back. He rushed for over 100 yards last week.

The o-line is getting better as well. This will be a challenge for them this week.

Look for the Eagles to load the box up with eight defenders and dare the Pats to throw the ball. Bryson Stewart has the arm, just not the time. He needs to find Makhel Henry in space or perhaps get the ball to Lavell in the flats.

This young team needs to win a football game.

They have heart. However, overcoming the lack of depth is a major problem, especially on these hot September nights. The Patriots go 0-4 on the year.

The score: Rosewood 41Pender 6.

Topsail at White Oak Topsail Coach Wayne Inman talked about opening things up a bit on the offensive side of the ball.

Cody Wallis threw for almost 200 yards last week.

Coach Inman is a man of word thus far. The Pirates are 3-0 for the second year in a row and face the White

Oak Vikings. The Vikes are 2-1.

This Pirate offense appears to be the best that Inman has had to date. Noah Lavalle is one of the best backs in the area while Johnathan Ward is a very good receiver. The key is the offensive line. They have passed the first three tests so far with flying colors.

White Oak is going to try and get outside. Sophomore Dereke Boone has more than 300 yards rushing and will attempt to exploit the Pirates outside containment. That was the Pirate defenses problem last year. This year’s defense will have to step up in this one.

Wallis is a very good passer. However, the Pirates offense still goes through Lavalle. Look for the junior stud to rush for 175 yards this week. When the Vikings load up and try and stop him Wallis will make them pay. The junior signal caller will throw at least one touchdown. Will it be Johnathan Ward?

This is the last nonconference game of the year for the Pirates. They want to win this one and go into the battles of the Mid-Eastern Conference unscathed.

This will be closer than people think. In fact, I think it is a pick’em. My heart says Topsail, so let’s go with the Pirates. The score:34-27

Ashley hands Lady Pirates first defeat

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer Way back in 1374, Chaucer made the statement, “There is an end to everything, to good things as well,” in his poem Troilus and Criseyde, and that became the precursor to what we turned into, “All good things must come to an end,” here in the United States around 1680.

Either way you sound it out it certainly applied to the end of the Topsail volleyball team’s season-opening, seven-game winning streak that came crashing down against a very good Ashley Screaming Eagles squad with no noticeable weaknesses.

Juliana Askew had nine kills and eight aces, Trinity Rosales added eight kills, two aces, and a block, and six other Lady Screaming eagles recorded kills as Ashley overwhelmed host Topsail 3-0 (25-10, 2515, 25-16) in a Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference game in Hampstead.

In fact, at the higher levels of the game young men are charged with gaining weight in order to play a certain position. The interior positions of the line is where size matters the most. However, there are times when a high school player gets put in a spot where they are considered undersized yet end up playing well.

That is the case with Heide Trask Titan junior lineman Wyatt Wilcox.

Mr. Wilcox is listed at 175 pounds. He is not that heavy yet plays the offensive line as if he is 250 pounds. Wyatt is aggressive in an aggressive game. He does not mind mixing it up with the big boys. He asks no quarter nor gives any.

When it comes to the game of football, Wyatt Wilcox plays big for the Heide Trask Titans.

our goal was to be better at one aspect of the game, and if you win the game, fine, but if you don’t you want to be better at something then you were at the start of the game, and for next week, also.

“We got better with our blocks and we had some nice serving runs but they were big and tall and they just kept hitting over us.

They have three or four really strong hitters and some really strong servers. But we’re just going to keep working on what we’ve been doing, the hitting will come.”

Gia Marinelli led Topsail with five aces, three kills, and a block, and Madison Lofton added three kills, and five digs.

Tuesday the Lady Pirates eased past (3A) conference foe South Brunswick 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-3, 25-23) – alternately showing their clear superiority over the Lady Trojans in the second and third games while displaying the inconsistencies that have become sort of their

trademark through many of the first seven matches of the season.

“Inconsistencies,” Pearsall said. “The first game we just let them hang around. We had five hitting errors and two serving errors. Those were unforced errors that have to be controlled. In a two-point game that’s a huge factor.

“In the third game we served well and I think the team got down on themselves. We knew they would come back in the fourth game and we let them hang around in that game a little too much.

Again, we had some hitting errors that were unforced so that allowed them to stay close.”

The Lady Cougars used a five-point and four-point run to build an early lead in the first game and although the Topsail girls fought back to tie the game at 13-13 they sill appeared to be a little out of sync as South Brunswick regained control and put the game

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The game of tennis is one in which the combatants must possess many different qualities. Among those qualities is the ability to combine both strength and grace into one.

For Topsail Pirate tennis player Kasey Pfaff they has never been a problem.

Miss Pfaff has been a staple on the Pirate tennis team for the last two years.

She has become a dominating force in the very tough Mid-Eastern Conference.

Last week the Pirate women’s tennis team got off to a great start, beating South Brunswick and Ashley 9-0. Kasey won 6-2/6-3 over South Brunswick. In the win over Ashley she did not drop a game, winning 6-0/6-0.

Miss Pfaff is currently the number two player in the teams rotation. There is little doubt that she will more than hold her own.

Waiting for the spots

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Fishing Fanatic Well the wait is on for the first big run of spots in the area. That being said the fishing has really ramped up on Topsail Island and the surrounding waters.

There have been quite a few flounder being caught although some are not quite big enough to keep. The surf fishing is pretty strong right now with both black and red drum being caught long with a few bluefish and even the occasional flounder and red. Most are fishing with cut baits and shrimp off of the beach.

The piers are reporting the same with the bite being pretty strong. There have been some Spanish being caught on Gotcha plugs while there have been some reds along with a black drum or two as well.

There have been a few spots being caught, but they are not here yet.

The freshwater bite is getting better as well. The usual red worms will work for the panfish with chicken livers and your favorite stink baits working for the cats.

This week’s fishing tip In North Carolina, and especially here near the coast, the fall months are the best time to fish. The weather is still warm but it is cooling off a little bit more at night.

The area panfish anglers use a little different technique when fishing cooler weather. Let’s go over a couple of tips I found to be helpful.

The first thing to remember is that during the late fall and early winter months the panfish tend to migrate from the deeper depths to at least mid-level depths. Just like in the summer months, they tend to like any underwater structure. They also like any fallen trees or brush.

As the days get shorter, the bluegills will head to the shallow waters to feed. Bluegill will frequently be found hanging around spring spawning beds at this time, especially if deeper waters are nearby.

As late fall enters, the panfish will start heading back to deeper waters as the cover of weeds and such will start to die off. This also makes the fish a little more eager to take your bait offerings.

As far as equipment goes, the same outfit will work, just switch up your baits and such to find what will work. One note, the bluegills tend to hit bright lures this time of year.

Pender earns conference win, Trask drops opener

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Pender Lady Patriot volleyball team showed great improvement throughout the summer volleyball league. However, the tough early schedule did not show that improvement as the Lady Pats started the year 0-5. Last week it was time to start Coastal 8 Conference play with a match against Lejeune. The lady Pats did not disappoint Coach Matt Davis in this one. The Pender Lady patriots earned a 3-0 sweep of the Lejeune Devil Pups. The scores were 2725, 25-5 and 25-17, Ashley Dupalevich led Pender with 20 assists and seven aces served. Haley Schaeffer chipped in eight kills, three aces and three digs. Mayce Wood had six

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer In soccer, there are many variables. There are times when a high school team has to rely on talent and then there are times when pure talent is not enough.

At Pender High School the men’s varsity soccer team is loaded with talented players.

One of those talented players has the letter C on his shirt. That letter stands for captain and is very important to a team with many underclassmen. At Pender, that captain is senior Jose Morales.

Mr. Morales is a player with great skills. He has shown those skills in practice and during matches.

However, what is more important is that he sets a good example with a great work ethic.

Jose Morales is the captain for good reason.

He leads the team by example.

The Heide Trask Lady Titans have found their youth to be both encouraging and difficult early in the season. The team has talent but is very inconsistent. Last week the Lady Titans played a much- improved Southwest Onslow team at their place. The match was tough in the easy going with Southwest taking a 28-26 win in overtime. In game two the Titans we were down 0-10 but came storming back to tie the game at 12. They were down 16-23 before making another run. The Lady Stallions took the game 25-21.

Cecil Ross Poole Jr. SURF CITY -- Cecil Ross Poole, Jr., 78, of Surf City, passed away Sunday, Sept.

2, 2018 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday Sept. 8 at New Life Christian Church with Pastor Dean Perry officiating. A reception will follow the service at the home, 1402 North New River Drive; Surf City.

Born in Charlotte, Aug. 21, 1940, he was the son of the late Cecil Ross Pool, Sr. and Ruby Stokes Pool. He was a strong believer and was active in his church.

He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed fishing and spending time on the beach.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Suzette Jackson; his sister, Patricia Poole Morgan; and his grandson, Steven Register.

Danny Noble WAKE FOREST -- Danny Noble of Wake Forest and formerly of Burgaw, passed away at home Aug. 20, 2018 at the age of 63. Danny was blessed to have been married to his high school sweetheart, Carol Saunders Noble for 44 years. They had one daughter, Ashley Carole, who married the son Danny never had, Joseph Morris. He was blessed with two grandchildren Caroline Grace and Thomas Bryan.

Danny was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis four years ago and always trusted God through his trial.

Danny was an employee at Invista for more than 43 years and was also a member of the Burgaw Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years. Danny

was never happier than when he was in the woods hunting deer, at Lea Island with friends, or holding his grandchildren.

Danny and Carol, who had lived their entire lives in Pender County, decided to move to Wake Forest two years ago when their first grandchild arrived, and to participate in the Duke Lung Transplant Program.

Danny and Carol joined Wake Forest Presbyterian Church, where many friendships have formed.

Danny is also survived by sisters Peggy Brown of Maple Hill and Wanda Kelly of Atkinson. As per Danny’s wishes, there will be no formal service with his ashes spread on family farmland adjacent to the Noble Cemetery in Maple Hill.

Dorine Howard Coffee WILLARD -- Dorine Howard Coffee, age 86 of Willard, passed away Sunday Sept. 2, 2018 in Jacksonville surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Nov.15, 1931 in Pender County daughter of the late John and Cola Edens Howard.

She is survived by three sons, David Coffee and wife Janice of Roseboro, John D. Coffee of Willard and Steven C. Coffee and wife Harriet of Wade; daughter Shelia Diane Sutton of Jack-

sonville; six grandchildren, David Coffee, J. R. Coffee, Kelli Jo Coffee, Stephanie Coffee, Amy Marovich and Bailey Brown; and ten great grandchildren; and sister Lois Hall of Fayetteville.

Dorine loved her family and put them first. She was Jehovah’s Witness attending Kingdom Hall in Rose Hill.

There are few things that I anticipate more than opening day of dove season. The opening day is perfectly positioned as a precursor to all other seasons. You know that after opening day, deer season is nearby, along with the appearance of the fall leaves, the chill of the autumn nights, the departure of the pesky gnats and mosquitoes, and the migrations of the various waterfowl.

I grew up dove hunting.

It was by far my favorite activity with a firearm.

Dove hunting provides the first classroom for many of our young hunters and

new adult hunters. First, it usually gives ample opportunity for shooting the shotgun. You may have spells of no activity, but when they fly, it is constant and quick. Usually within a few shots, you self-correct and begin to understand how far to lead, what the maximum distances of a successful shot are, and when to take the shot.

It also teaches us patience. During the waits between flights, we enhance our peripheral vision. We spot the birds from great distances, able to recognize their flight pattern and silhouette. Before ever hunting dove, that same bird would have gone unnoticed, not to mention unidentified. These are skills needed as the novice hunter advances to other game.

Dove hunting teaches us how to be safe. We quickly learn how to identify where other hunters are and instinctively know

not to shoot in that direction. We let low flying birds pass, shouting it out in order to make other hunters aware that a bird is too low to fire.

We learn the art of camouflage. We use natural colors in our clothing. We nestle in non-descript areas to help shield us from a flying bird’s view.

We recognize possible flight patterns and targets.

A lone tree makes a great point of reference for a fast moving bird, as well as a hiding place to dodge the flying lead. This means it is a great location to set up as the birds will tend to target the location.

We lear n the feeling of success. One bird or a limit, you will remember the shots made. You replay them, sometimes many years later.

Doves are easy to clean and fairly tasty. Because of this, it is the ideal game for the new hunter to get their hands dirty. Processing your own game, taking it

from field to grill, makes the meal that much better.

You worked for the nourishment. It was not bought at the store in shrink wrap in the cooler section. It is exactly as God intended.

And lastly, dove hunting provides the memories for which you never wish to relinquish. The bridge of generations, hunting together, lear ning from one another. Few other activities can teach so much.

Few classrooms can provide so much enjoyment.

The robbers, realizing they needed a new getaway vehicle, new clothes, and a bath, stole a car from another motorists a few miles down the road. The driver sensibly fled, taking his clothing with him, so the robbers, smelling of decomposition and vulture scorn, piled into their purloined Pontiac and continued their escape.

The trooper, meanwhile, righted his bike, brushed off some dirt and embarrassment, and continued the pursuit. It should be noted there were few police radios in those days, and none on motorcycles.

The trooper passed the corpse of the hero buzzard, then shot-up, smelly coupe abandoned by the robbers.

A short distance away, the

owner of the Pontiac waved him down with a description of the new getaway car.

A few miles down the road, the trooper found the Pontiac parked beside a country store at the intersection with what would become U.S. 421. One of the robbers was half-undressed while his partner worked a handpump, trying to wash away the redolence of their guilt. He quickly drew down on them, and handcuffed them to a convenient tree.

The third gunman was inside the store, trying to negotiate for a new pair of overalls on credit.

The storeowner spotted the trooper with revolver in hand, and immediately pulled a double-barrel persuader on the rancid, reeking robber. Legend has it that the storekeeper told

police and reporters that there was something about the robber he didn’t like – namely that “he smelled bad.”

So the next time you see a graceful circle of vultures in the sky, remember that they’re really good citizens.

Indeed, when you get down to it, buzzards have a lot more going for them than many people. Not only do they tirelessly work for a living at a job no one else wants, but they are good parents, too. They don’t judge, and they treat everyone and everything equally when that time has come, as it must for everyone and everything.

Buzzards mind their own business, they bother no one, and once in a while, they even fight crime.

What more could you ask for in a neighbor?

Pender County celebrates National Child Welfare Social Worker Recognition Day Pender County Department of Social Services (DSS) is celebrating Sept. 20 as National Child Welfare Social Worker Recognition Day. This day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the essential work being done across the country by this dedicated group of social work professionals. “Our child welfare social workers are out on the front lines every day,� said Wes Stewart, Pender County Department of Social Services Director. “Like our law enforcement, emergency services and other first responders, the staff answer calls for assistance at all hours and they are acutely aware that lives may be at risk as they respond. The unique aspect to this work however is that child welfare workers, while often among the first responders, are involved with children and families as a resource and support for as long as they are needed.�

Stewart stressed the importance of building relationships. “Child welfare social workers work to build relationships with families and help guide them

through difficult family circumstances,� Stewart said. “Child welfare social workers help children heal from trauma and help parents create stable, nurturing environments where children can thrive. In situations where children need an adoptive home, child welfare workers help identify these permanent homes.�

This day of recognition is a wonderful opportunity to thank a dedicated group of people who may often go unseen by the general public but whose work is critical to the future of our communities, Stewart added.

On Sept. 20, County Departments of Social Services across North Carolina will host events to recognize their child welfare social work staff. Many county agencies will view One Heart Can Make a Difference: Impacting Lives through Dynamic Service Excellence by Mark Anthony Garrett, a live virtual event hosted by the National Child Welfare Workforce Institute (NCWWI) and the Children’s Bureau. Bird hunting seasons open Sept. 1 Hunters will have their first chance back in the field Sept. 1, as dove season opens in North Carolina.

Three seasons are set for this year – Sept. 1-Oct. 6, Nov. 17-Dec. 1, and Dec. 10-Jan 31. The daily limit is 15, and covers both mourning doves and the growing flock of invasive whitewing doves.

As with all migratory birds, shotguns must be plugged to hold no more than two rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber.

North Carolina and federal laws prohibit hunting over bait, which is defined as any food product intentionally scattered or left to attract wildlife. The Wildlife Resources Commission maintains several millet fields designed for wildlife habitat that are available

for hunting on gamelands throughout the southeast, and hunting over a harvested corn field is legal, as long as the field does not feature intentionally “sloppy” harvesting.

Other species that come in Sept. 1 are king, clapper Virginia and Sora rails, along with gallinules and m o o r h e n s. W h i l e g a l linules are not popular among wildgame cooks, their striking purple feathers and bright colors make them a popular bird for taxidermy.

Rails, moorhens and gallinules may be hunted Sept. 1-Oct. 13, and Oct. 22Nov. 28. Limits are 15 king or clapper rails, 25 Virginia and Sora rails, and 15 gallinules and moorhens. All limits are for single species or in aggregate.

Volunteers needed for Pender County rebuilding ministry event

Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry (WARM) will hold a rebuild event called Pender County Day of Hope Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. WARM is a nonprofit that serves Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover counties by organizing volunteers and raising funds to complete safety-related urgent home repairs for low income homeowners.

Lindsay Miles is the Volunteer Coordinator with Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry.

“We are going to be working on a home in Pender County and we want to get the word out to the community,” said Miles. The location of the home will be shared with volunteers at registration.

The homeowner is battling Lyme and Meniere’s Disease which makes mobility difficult in her aging home. Living on disability, she is unable to afford maintenance and repairs.

Miles said that WARM is trying to recruit volunteers to help with the rebuilding project. The nonprofit believes that by preventing home accidents and illnesses, they can help people age in place safely, as well as preserve their dignity and independence. The group’s motto is “Small Miracles, Safer Homes.”

The location of the home will be shared with volunteers at registration.

WARM began in 1996 in response to hurricanes Bertha and Fran. Volunteers from across the area were organized by leaders of the Wilmington District of the United Methodist Church to repair the damaged homes of low income and elderly residents. As they went into the homes, volunteers realized that much of the damage preceded the storms. The residents had not had access to the resources or funding needed to make repairs. As the volunteers responded to the natural disaster, they discovered that substandard housing was an underlying problem.

Since that time, WARM has continued its mission to improve the living conditions of low income homeowners, many of them elderly and disabled. Throughout the years, the program has helped more than 700 families in southeastern North Carolina. For more than a decade, the organization operated as an all-volunteer nonprofit with a volunteer board of directors who reviewed all the applications, acted as project managers and handled grant management functions.

With a growing number of applications coming in between the year 2000 through 2009, the Board of Directors saw the need to strengthen WARM’s infrastructure so that they could serve the homeowners more efficiently. With a grant from The Duke Endowment, the nonprofit hired administrative staff and rented an office in the Jo Ann Carter Harrelson Center in downtown Wilmington. The staff and board collaborated to increase awareness of the problem of substandard housing and to draw community support for their mission.

Consequently, volunteers from local churches, businesses, and civic clubs participate in WARM’s many projects on an ongoing basis. Each summer, hundreds of youth and adults travel to the region on their church mission trips to build wheelchair ramps, repair floors and complete other projects in the area.

what this dream could mean for himself and for his people, so he summoned his advisors and said, “Interpret my dream for me.� These charlatans thought, let’s just make up something. How will he know the difference? So they asked the king to describe his dream.

However, King Nebuchadnezzar knew his men. “Before you tell me what my dream meant,� he demanded, “you must tell me what my dream was.� The advisors objected, “Nobody can do that, not even the gods.� Their rash response angered King Nebuchadnezzar and he replied, “If you can’t tell me my dream and what it meant, then I’ll have you all executed.�

Volunteers needed to transport cancer patients to treatment The Pender Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has developed a new partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS) to provide no cost transportation for Pender County cancer patients to treatment centers in New Hanover County.

The program is part of the ACS Road to Recovery Program and is for cancer patients who have no

other means of transportation to and from their cancer treatment appointments. “We are honored to be part of this program which will be a lifeline for some of our Pender friends and neighbors who might not otherwise be able to get to their cancer treatment appointments,� noted Pender RSVP Director, Barbara Mullins. “Our

first task is to recruit and train volunteer drivers to make this program work.�

Volunteer drivers will donate their time and vehicle to transport cancer patients to and from their cancer treatment centers in New Hanover County.

Drivers of any age will be considered and training will be provided. Background and DMV checks are required.

ArtBeat Community Center Located in the old EMS Building at 108 East Wilmington Street in Burgaw, ArtBeat is the new headquarters of the Pender Arts Council. ArtBeat offers arts programs to the community through classes, events, and workshops. The Pender Arts Council mission is to increase awareness and access to the arts in Pender County. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community of Pender County. ArtBeat is sponsored by the Town of Burgaw. Memberships are $15 for individuals and $25 for families.
