Pender County residents woke to a touch of winter Tuesday morning as snow dusted the county.

Hurricane can’t get Cub Scouts off track Since Hurricane Florence, the word ‘resilient’ has been tossed about frequently. Perhaps a perfect example of resiliency is Hampstead’s Cub Scout Pack 235. For more than 37 years the Den was affiliated with Hampstead United Methodist Church. Then Florence visited. “The Methodist Church suffered significant damage, said John Noto, Cub Master. “Some of our members had to be rescued by boat. Some of our leaders are still not in their homes. But slowly and surely, the boys have trickled back. Noto said the Den didn’t meet until the end of October. They couldn’t meet at Hampstead United Methodist Church. Then All Saints Catholic Church in Hampstead graciously

stepped in to assist Pack 235. “The church has been welcoming and we appreciate their hospitality, said Noto. “All Saints Catholic Church has taken us in, said Tricia Dickey, who assists the Den along with her
husband, Michael who serves as the co-assistant Cub Master. “We have 60 boys involved in Pack 235 and 14 leaders, Noto said. “We meet the second, third and fourth Mondays of every month. The fifth Monday of the month is optional. On the first Monday of the month the leaders meet. “We moved from Northern Virginia and John was the first person we met after we moved to Hampstead, said Tricia. “I enjoy the families we have get to know so well who care and are involved. Despite Hurricane Florence’s impact, Pack 235 is back on track. On March 16, at Topsail Elementary School the Pack will host their annual Pinewood Derby. For the second year, Jeff Gordan Chevrolet is a major sponsor. “We have our own track with a

Pender County Commissioners have traditionally met this time each year to discuss long-range planning and budgets. Recovery from Hurricane Florence took discussion time as the Board is in the middle of extensive work on the Pender County Courthouse after the historic building was heavily damaged during the storm. “We are trying to get the courthouse project moving along, but things move kind of slow when it is a historic building, said Pender County Manager Randall Woodruff. “We have to go through the State Historic Preservation Office. They are scheduled to come and take a look at the courthouse. Water needs across the county continues to be an important topic with commissioners. Pender County faces somewhat of a delima – the county’s water source and treatment plant is in the west, and the growth is in the east.
“With the county growing as it is, we have to try to stay a step ahead to make sure we have adequate water capacity to serve the county, Woodruff said. “With the growth on the east side, the pressure is on county government to plan ahead. The county is looking at a variety of options. Short term water solutions to increase capacity include an interconnection with New Hanover County along U.S. 17 to make possible purchase of water. Pender’s water system is currently interconnected with Surf City and Wallace for emergencies. When the main intake on the Cape Fear River was damaged, the county was able to open the connection with Wallace to keep county residents supplied with water. But Woodruff says interconnection is good for emergency or temporary capacity issues, it’s not a long-term solution for county water needs. The current supply line from
