More than $105 million in FEMA aid distributed in Pender From Staff Reports Since the federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Florence, Pender County residents have received more than $105.7 million in state and federal funds. More than $15.6 million in state and federal grants have gone to more than 2,500 homeowners and renters. More than 1,200 flood insurance claims have been filed. Nov. 23, nearly $36.5 million in U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loans have been approved for 605 homeowners and 34 businesses. Individual assistance As of Nov. 27, 6,923 home inspections have been issued. Nearly 100 percent of home inspections have been completed. Transitional Sheltering Assistance is an option using participating hotel/motels to help survivors identify short or long-term
housing solutions. The current number of households checked is 44. Pender County has been approved for FEMA Direct Temporary Housing Assistance. Travel trailers and manufactured housing units may be provided for eligible applicants. As of Nov. 25, 46 temporary housing units have been licensed. The Disaster Recovery Center for Pender County is located at the Pender County Agriculture Auditorium, 801 S. Walker St.
in Burgaw and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It opened Oct. 5 and has assisted 1,296 visitors. Public assistance Pender County was approved for assistance to local governments for debris removal and emergency protective measures Sept. 14 and permanent work Oct. 12. As of Nov. 27, 14 Requests for Public Assistance were received and 12 approved to date.

The new Surf City bridge gracefully spans the Intracoastal Waterway south of Soundside Park. The bridge, scheduled to open originally in September 2019, opened Tuesday with a ribbon cutting, nearly 10 months ahead of schedule.

The deadline has passed to have all storm-related vegetative debris on the roadside, according to Pender County Emergency Manager Tom Collins. November 30 was the deadline. Collins says all debris must be storm-related and separated according to FEMA guidelines.8 FEMA divides debris into the following stormrelated categories – vegetation debris, construction debris, household hazardous waste, white goods, and electronics. These items should be separated and placed within 12-ft. of the road. Construction debris includes building materials, drywall, lumber, carpet, furniture, and mattresses damaged by the storm; Household Hazardous Waste includes oils, batteries, pesticides, paints, cleaning supplies, and compressed gas; White goods include refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, and water heaters. Electronics include televisions, computers, radios, stereos, DVD players and telephones. The final date to have all other storm-related debris to the road right-of-way is Dec. 21. Debris should never be placed against trees or under power lines. Materials brought to the road right-of-way after these deadlines will be considered illegal dumping. Storm debris does not include new construction materials, repair debris, cut tiles, sheetrock or framing materials. Private contractors are responsible for dis-

For the first time in 16 years, Pender County has a new sheriff. Alan Cutler was sworn in Monday morning, taking over the reigns of county law enforcement from retiring Sheriff Carson Smith. Cutler told Pender County Commissioners Monday he looks forward to working with the Board. Smith will not be leaving public service for long – he will be heading to Raleigh in January as the District 16 Representative in the state house. Smith was honored by the Pender County Commissioners Monday with a special proclamation and presentation of his service
