More than $105 million in FEMA aid distributed in Pender From Staff Reports Since the federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Florence, Pender County residents have received more than $105.7 million in state and federal funds. More than $15.6 million in state and federal grants have gone to more than 2,500 homeowners and renters.

More than 1,200 flood insurance claims have been filed. An estimated $53.6 million in claims have been paid to date. As of

Nov. 23, nearly $36.5 million in U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loans have been approved for 605 homeowners and 34 businesses.

Individual assistance As of Nov. 27, 6,923 home inspections have been issued. Nearly 100 percent of home inspections have been completed.

Transitional Sheltering Assistance is an option using participating hotel/motels to help survivors identify short or long-term

housing solutions. The current number of households checked is 44. Pender County has been approved for FEMA Direct Temporary Housing Assistance. Travel trailers and manufactured housing units may be provided for eligible applicants. As of Nov. 25, 46 temporary housing units have been licensed.

The Disaster Recovery Center for Pender County is located at the Pender County Agriculture Auditorium, 801 S. Walker St.

in Burgaw and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday through Saturday. It opened Oct. 5 and has assisted 1,296 visitors.

Public assistance Pender County was approved for assistance to local governments for debris removal and emergency protective measures Sept. 14 and permanent work Oct. 12. As of Nov. 27, 14 Requests for Public Assistance were received and 12 approved to date.

Surf City bridge open ahead of schedule

The new Surf City bridge gracefully spans the Intracoastal Waterway south of Soundside Park. The bridge, scheduled to open originally in September 2019, opened Tuesday with a ribbon cutting, nearly 10 months ahead of schedule.

The deadline has passed to have all storm-related vegetative debris on the roadside, according to Pender County Emergency Manager Tom Collins. November 30 was the deadline.

Collins says all debris must be storm-related and separated according to FEMA guidelines.8 FEMA divides debris into the following stormrelated categories – vegetation debris, construction debris, household hazardous waste, white goods, and electronics. These items should be separated and placed within 12-ft. of the road.

Construction debris includes building materials, drywall, lumber, carpet, furniture, and mattresses damaged by the storm; Household Hazardous Waste includes oils, batteries, pesticides, paints, cleaning supplies, and compressed gas; White goods include refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, air conditioners, stoves, and water heaters.

Electronics include televisions, computers, radios, stereos, DVD players and telephones.

The final date to have all other storm-related debris to the road right-of-way is Dec. 21.

Debris should never be placed against trees or under power lines.

Materials brought to the road right-of-way after these deadlines will be considered illegal dumping.

Storm debris does not include new construction materials, repair debris, cut tiles, sheetrock or framing materials. Private contractors are responsible for dis-

Smith honored by BOC

For the first time in 16 years, Pender County has a new sheriff.

Alan Cutler was sworn in Monday morning, taking over the reigns of county law enforcement from retiring Sheriff Carson Smith.

Cutler told Pender County Commissioners Monday he looks forward to working with the Board.

Smith will not be leaving public service for long – he will be heading to Raleigh in January as the District 16 Representative in the state house.

Smith was honored by the Pender County Commissioners Monday with a special proclamation and presentation of his service

Outdoor Dream Foundation fulfills boy’s wish

By Lori Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer Coulter Hnatt refuses to let difficulties stand in the way of living his life to the fullest. The ten-year-old boy was diagnosed with brain cancer when he was only four.

Since then, Coulter and his family have been fighting the hardest battle of their lives; however, it hasn’t stopped him from achieving his dreams. One thing Coulter has always wanted to do has been to go on a bear hunt. Recently, Outdoor Dream Foundation (ODF) was able to make his dream a reality.

With help from the nonprofit’s program, Coulter traveled from his home in Texas to Bladen County for the hunt. He came with his family and his chaperone for the adventure, Georgia wildlife officer Stan Elrod.

Kevin and Jennifer Jarman, of Beulaville, hosted the family during their stay.

The couple first began participating in the program 14 years ago after the loss of a dear friend. He had been an avid hunter, and they wanted to do something special to remember him.

“My wife and I enjoy it,” began Kevin Jarman.

“We host the kids who come to hunt every year.

We have a couple of hunting buddies from Alabama that come in and help us with the hunt, along with our friend Keith Daniel.

We made it happen this year. We almost gave up.”

Coulter had been up, moving around and talking when they first planned the hunt, but then his condition began to worsen.

When he first arrived in Beulaville to meet the Jarmans, he was too weak to walk, had no appetite and couldn’t keep anything down when he tried to eat.

Everyone was beginning to give up on the hunting trip, but then they got a call.

Keith Daniel was on the other end of the line, saying that they had a bear - and it was at the right place at the right time.

“They ended up asking Coulter if he wanted to go and he said yes,” said Daniel. “They put him in the truck and drove him over, but it took them three and a half hours to get there.

We waited, and we had the bear up a tree the whole time. I was right there when he shot the bear, and it was unbelievable, the most special moment. I’ve been hunting since I was nine, and this was as good as it gets.”

Coulter’s dad was able to get close enough to where the bear was, allowing his son to see the creature clearly and to take his shot from the truck. After the bear fell, the young hunter was smiling from ear to ear.

Coulter looked to his father and, still smiling, he simply said, “Thanks, Dad.” By all accounts, the

encounter left the group of hunters teary-eyed and humbled. Coulter’s face was full of excitement when he asked to go to the the bear. They took him over and he was able to stay for a while. Growing weak from all the action, he left with his mother to return to the Jarmans’ house.

Each year, ODF grants outdoor adventures to children who have been diagnosed with ter minal or life-threatening illnesses.

They provide hunting and fishing adventures to children and youth under 21 years of age across the United States and Canada.

One of the hunts takes place in Bladen County each year. Every time, there is a different person with a different story.

“It was an emotionally stressful experience, but the good Lord was looking out for Coulter with this hunt and we were able to make it happen. We are proud to be a part of it,” said Jarman.

Atkinson Cemetery seeks donations, help

By Lori Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer The Atkinson Cemetery is in need of donations.

Sara Lanier, Secretary for the cemetery, said that while a lot of people think that the Town of Atkinson supports the upkeep of the cemetery, it is actually not affiliated with the town.

The only support they receive for maintenance comes from donations from families that have plots or who have loved ones buried there.

“It’s supported by donations, and a lot of people do not realize that,” said Lanier. “Our funds have gotten very low this year.

When we started at Easter, we had enough funds to mow the cemetery six times all summer long. So needless to say, the donations we got have been stretched out.”

Lanier said that a number of people in and around the community have made comments that they would like to donate, but were not able to give much.

“Small donations add up,” said Lanier. “One year, we had three different families that had family members who passed away. They all asked that people give donations to the cemetery instead of flowers. That year, we ended up with $15 left after the expense of upkeep of the cemetery. Even $10 at a time helps. A lot of people just don’t think about that. If they can’t donate enough to actually

But, Wait Financial literacy is not a strength within my skill set, but I embrace this deficit as a part of who I am. Isn’t it enough that I work full time, mother two kids and display a modicum of domesticity? I’m not a machine, after all, and defer to my gift of gab when the bank ledger dips into the negative.

My cash reserve needs its own reserve, which results in at least one monthly call to Bank of America. Normally, I plead my case for the overdrawn items, beg forgiveness and promise that I will be good from that point on. I sincerely mean it, too. Then, life happens and tracking the withdrawals is just one more task that simply can’t be endured.

So, when I notice a seemingly less than legitimate offer, I wonder why everyone’s not screaming to the heavens about it.

Products sold on late night television are a prime example. Last Saturday night, a special wrench capable of doing the most amazing things was advertised for the low, low price of $19.99.

But, this offer was only available to the first 50 callers and for a limited time only-a double whammy. Instantly, I wanted to be among the privileged few savvy enough to snag this incredible deal, but soon faced the realization that I didn’t need such an amazing wrench or that, if I did own one, It would never reach its wrench potential.

After all, this tool was equivalent to 20 different wrenches and I figured I’d use only three to four wrench variations at most. Just as I was about to turn the channel, the words, “But wait,” stopped me cold in my tracks. If I called in the next five minutes, I could be the proud owner of a second wrenchfree of charge. Now, a deal of this magnitude doesn’t happen every day. I’d be a fool to pass it up.

Suddenly, my internal scam sensor alerted when a quickly spoken caveat followed this extraordinary offer.

“Just pay a separate fee.”

So, if I pay this separate fee for my second wrench, then it’s technically not free. “Liar, liar pants on fire,” I fumed, resisting the urge to call this company out.

Feeling victimized, I questioned the prices of these wrenches. Why is this product in the same price family as the Dirt Daddy Universal Vacuum Attachment, Peti-Care Dog Nail Clipper, Himalayan Salt Crystal Lamp and Atomic Insect Zapper?

Rudolph, Cervantes, and Krampus There are times when, like Miguel Cervantes’ famous and misunderstood character, I find myself incensed by man’s inhumanity toward man, the sheer idiotic desire to make misery out of mirth. Unlike Ol’ Mike’s hero, I have no plans to mount a broken-down horse, grab a battered, rusty sword and go fight windmills whilst defending the honor of a random tavern wench, but I can very well understand the good Don’s frustration.

What has this to do with the Christmas season, you might ask?

Oddly enough, everything.

I grew up watching the “Claymation” Christmas classics – Santa Claus is coming to Town, the Little Drummer Boy, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and all the rest. I am not ashamed to admit we still watch them in our household.

Back in the dark ages of black and white television sets, rabbit ears and maybe three or four channels, those specials came on once a year, and it just wasn’t Christmas if you missed them.

My parents usually joined me when the shows came on. Sometimes we even had hot chocolate, eggnog, or some other kind of Christmas treat.

At school the next day, we young’uns could quote lines from the programs, and have deep philosophical discussions about what we might do in similar circumstances. A very wise teacher once castigated our class after we teased a fellow student to tears, and pointed out that Rudolph, while also different, saved the day.

Once upon a time, kid’s programs were kid’s programs. We were entertained, we sang the sons over and over, and we learned. There were no sociopolitical undertones, no hidden messages, no attempts to brainwash children into becoming neo-Nazis or worse, acolytes of some generic new world order.

Historical anachronisms aside, the Drummer Boy was -- and is -- a beautiful tale about the birth of Christ. What with our society’s never-ending headlong rush to political correctness, a Christmas message that doesn’t focus on the secular aspects is simply not acceptable, so Drummer Boy (and Nestor the Long-Eared Donkey) were cast into the shadows of networks with lower market shares. I was rather pleased to see both Rankin-Bass classics on

the schedule for one of the “big” cable channels in the coming days.

I have to wonder how long it will be before the adventures of a misfit reindeer are also banished and only shown with apologies.

It seems the standard bearer for all things leftist, a digital newspaper published by one of the most unpleasant persons ever to be bleeped on national television, is attacking Rudolph. Whether said “news service” planted some social media comments and then harvested the crop is debatable, but they have reportedly done so in the past.

The Huff crowd survived that scandal

Jefferson Weaver and several more, and have set their sights on finding more ways to make all Americans unhappy as they are.

Enter a poor little misfit reindeer and his equally misfit friends.

Rudolph, according to the HuffPost, is racist, homophobic, sexist, encourages bullying, and encourages sadism.

I had no idea there were such twisted subtexts in a classic children’s program, whose producers said in a 1960s magazine interview that they were trying to get away from the subliminal Madison Avenue hyper-commercialism that dominated the time (as it does ours).

Some of the criticism focuses on Herbie the elf, who doesn’t want to be a toymaker, but instead wants to be a dentist. Alleged grownups whose parents didn’t hug or spank them enough are suggesting Herbie is a serial killing sadist who uses teeth from his victims to make toys. What kind of sick, twisted person thinks of such things?

Then there’s the search for Rudolph, after he runs away. Feminists are howling and throwing their pink hats because Donner (Rudolph’s dad) says finding Rudolph is “man’s work.” Of course, Rudolph’s mom and girlfriend set out to rescue him anyway (and it’s a good thing they did).

Never mind Donner being an abusive father because he talks tough to Rudolph and tries to make him wear a fake nose.

Yet another critic complained that the Island of Misfit Toys was cruel.

Easy Riders Dear Easy, If you’re interested in leisurely, recreational riding for fitness and fun, a great option is a “comfort bike,” which is very popular among baby boomers. Here’s what you should know about this option, along with some tips to help you shop and choose.

Comfort bikes A comfort bike is a style of bicycle that’s easy on an aging body because it lets you ride in a more comfortable upright position. These bikes have high handlebars so you don’t have to hunch over, which eases lower-back strain and reduces pressure on the wrists and hands. They also come with wide tires for a smooth ride, offer fewer gears, and have soft, wide seats to eliminate saddle soreness.

Most comfort bikes also come with shock-absorbing forks and seat posts for additional comfort. And some offer unique design features like an ultra low step-over bar that makes getting on and off easy

Shopping tips To find a quality comfort bike, your best option is to find a good bike shop in your area. Bikes from big box stores, like Walmart and Target, are mass-market bikes that may be less expensive, but the quality isn’t as good and they’re typically seven to eight pounds heaver.

They also come in only one size, so you’re not likely to get a great fit.

Before you buy any bike, be sure you take it for a test ride first to ensure that the seat and fit of the bike is comfortable,

the brakes and shifters are easy to use, the gears can go low enough for climbing hills, and the frame and suspension adequately smooth the bumps.

Recumbent bikes If the comfort bikes don’t meet your needs, another popular style among older riders is a recumbent bike. These are the low-to-the-ground, stretched-out frame bikes with La-Z-Boy style seats that allow you to recline with your legs positioned in front of you.

Recumbent bikes are very comfy, easy on the back, arms and shoulders, and aerodynamic which make them ideal for long rides. The disadvantages, because they are low-tothe-ground, they can be harder to balance and maneuver, and are more difficult for other vehicles to see.

Not going gently into the night

Bill Messer Last week, I was invited to a celebration of people ‘over a certain age’, and the age was 90 That’s a lot of years, but increasingly, I’m aware of more and more people who are joining this elite group.

I remember how shocked I was, at age fifty, to get my invitation to join the American Association of Retired Persons, now just the letters AARP. I thought that was quaint, that for some reason middle age had come to an end and I was now relegated to the last of the check-boxes.

Check-boxes? How many times have I been annoyed there are no more check-boxes on forms, like ‘65 and older’ as the last choice? With no options after.

“Do not go gentle into that good night,” urged the poet Dylan Thomas.

“Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

If interviewed about my own demise, if asked what my last words might be, it will be, “No, not yet!

I don’t want to go!”

It’s not like I’m not ready to meet my Maker, just not this afternoon, say.

There seems to be a common thread among those attending the event; old, wrinkled, stooped over, maybe, but those are mere physical impediments to living one’s life to the fullest. Many are still quite active, mentally alert and contributing to community and family.

Old people may have trouble recalling events of the past, not because of a deficiency of memory, but because they have so many memories to recall.

“Johnny, Fritzi, Billy,” my grandmother used to call out, when I had done something alarming requiring immediate attention, as she worked down from the top of her list, through her children to the grandchild.

Middle age just does not stop for whole generations of people who don’t slow down in their exploits.

In 1895, at age 51, Joshua Slocum set off in a 37 ft sailboat, sailing singlehanded around the world.

It took him three years to complete the circumnavigation. In my younger sailing days, I thought 51 was ancient, but that’s the age I was when I moved to the coast and realized my dream of ocean sailing.

I read many books about sailing alone around the world, and I was satisfied to read and dream. Ten years later, done with the dream, I passed the boat along to a new dreamer.

70 is the new 50, whatever that means, and to live in denial seems to work pretty well for coping with aging.

The Town of Pine Knoll Shores threw a party a couple of weeks ago, for residents who were of a certain age, part of their effort to structure the community as ‘aging friendly’, and it was wellattended, those over-90s bringing along their 70year-old kids.

After the evening ended, I wondered if they seemed active and continued to age well, or they aged well and continued to be active.

Many of my friends are ‘aging out’ and passed retirement age some time ago, but, like the Energizer Bunny, they keep moving right along and banging on life even as their batteries run down.

At least two of my friends have resorted to a solution my grandmother adopted, seat cushions for the driver’s side of the car, making it easier to see across the top of the steering wheel, instead of through the gap between the top of the steering wheel and the dash panel.

“Rage, rage against the dying of the light,” Thomas urges his dying father, begging him to rise from his deathbed and fight the coming of ‘that good night’.

Bob Zimmerman, as a young singer whose work was beginning to be noticed, chanced upon some Dylan Thomas poems, and is thought to have adopted the poet’s first name for his own last name, now Bob Dylan. Dylan’s songs often reflect the intensity of Thomas’ lyric emotion.

Do not grieve at the passage of life, Thomas suggests.

I have found that for some people, growing up hard, never had an early opportunity to explore those things beyond meeting basic needs.

Change is coming As I was leaving Topsail Island the other night, a group of seagulls perched on the swing bridge dropped a gift on my freshly-washed car. I thought to myself, I’m not one of the folks that is going to miss this bridge.

I have the same thought nearly every week when I’m waiting in line to get on or off the island with a schedule to keep.

And after reading a lot of the Facebook posts, I wouldn’t be surprised to see protesters chaining themselves to the bridge when the work crews arrive to begin to dismantle the structure.

The old adage says the only things certain in life are death and taxes. There is a third – change. Let’s face it – the future is here and the old bridge just doesn’t meet the needs of travelers and residents today.

I understand the nostalgia connected with the old bridge. It is most definitely a throwback to a slower, easier time when Topsail Island was a quiet little

I have some reservations about that myself, but Rudolph was written before social media and cell phones. I would argue that Santa just plain didn’t know about the island kingdom, and that he was a hero for righting someone else’s wrong.

And by the way – Santa Claus? My goodness.

Some of the comments about Santa Claus make one think the Krampus is preferable. (Look up the Krampus, if you don’t know the story).

I think one reason I have always liked Rudolph was because as a little kid, I could actually relate. I didn’t go to the same school as a lot of the children my age, so our social interactions were sometimes strained.

I didn’t have a lot of friends, because I was bigger than most, and quite honestly, overweight. I wasn’t a really good ballplayer, although I tried. I had big ears. I didn’t like a lot of the same things kids my age were supposed to like, since I spent more time around adults.

In short, only a red nose would have made me more weird.

While I lounge in my Snuggie munching on a pair of Bread Gloves, I’ll bask in the knowledge

beach, not unlike many along the North Carolina coast. That time is gone.

Now the new bridge is going to open soon. It is a graceful span of modern engineering that arcs across the Intracoastal Waterway with room for walking and bike riding, providing a beautiful view from the peak of the arc. I still find it amazing that people can build something like that. It all fits together, and ends up exactly where it was supposed to.

Someone on Facebook wrote it was a “monstrosity.” I beg to differ.

Remember a while back when the swing bridge broke? What a mess that was. And it could happen anytime with a bridge that old. It can block vehicle traffic, boat traffic, or both if it malfunctions.

In the time of emergency – which we have seen a lot of recently – it is just inadequate to handle the traffic.

And let’s not talk about the routine summer traffic. Emergency traffic can’t access the island or mainland when the traffic is jammed because of the swing bridge without making the long loop through North Topsail Beach.

The swing bridge is a wonderful part of the history of Surf City and Topsail Island and will be remembered by many.

Perhaps the pieces of the swing bridge should be cut when it is dismantled and sold as souvenirs, donating the money to charity. That would be a nice way to remember the bridge and give to a good cause. Just a thought. games, and relishing the day when those who shunned me would be put in their places. Instead I just learned how to interact without becoming a member of the sometimes cruel crowd of social compliance – and I made friends because of said semi-rebellion.

Rudolph taught me to persevere, to focus on a few true friends, and that we don’t always win.

Rudolph taught me to treat others as I wish to be treated, and that it ain’t always smart to be part of the crowd. Rudolph also shows us that even those who seem least in society can sometimes be the hero.

Where have we heard those themes before? A right smart long time ago – all the way back to 1612, or 1605 if you speak the archaic Spanish in which Cervantes first wrote the adventures of “The Ingenious Nobleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha,” better known as Don Quixote.

I don’t think very many people, not even the saddest of snowflakes intent on ruining everyone’s Christmas, will pay much attention to the Huff People. But it still bugs the stuffing out of me, to the point that I want to at least figuratively saddle up Old Red, find a willing sidekick to ride Mabelline the Donkey, and strap on a rusty sword.

Mess with the icons of my childhood too much, and I am willing to make Krampus look like a rank amateur. that I stuck it to The Man yet again when this company goes belly up.

And, yes, I do own a singing bass and regret not purchasing two.

When my crooning fish goes vintage, I plan to buy enough Pajama Jeans to clothe an entire army of middle-aged moms.

Variety of vendors at Christmas on the Square Dec. 15 The Town of Burgaw.

And another important part of the Christmas on the Square market is the wide variety of vendors who will be selling their handmade and homemade craft items.

On hand this year will the Southport Toymaker, Paul Guerin, whose handmade wooden toys were featured in the last Spider-

Man movie.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Burgaw Dec. 15 and seeing many of the people I met last year there who went home with one of my trucks, trains and fire trucks said Guerin. “Kids always come to my booth and are amazed with the toys but are afraid to touch them in fear of breaking one. But I encouraged the children and their parents to look them over because my toys are made to be played with and not just sit in a shelf,” said the toymaker from Brunswick County.

The market will feature several jewelers who make one of a kind items, handcrafted pottery items, fragrant and healthy all natural soaps and body products and craftsman who can take a piece of wood and transform it into a beautiful piece of furniture.

One of the craftsman, Brent Byerly, has stayed busy the last few weeks, building up an inventory of his wooden nativity sets, a big seller at last year’s Christmas on the Square.

“There are never two nativity sets that are just alike. I cut out each one by hand and them put them together but everyone is a little different,” Byerly said.

Byerly also is very aware of the struggles caused by the record flooding from Hurricane Florence this fall and is bringing some of his wooden creations that people can purchase with the proceeds going to the recovery efforts in Pender County.

Seafood, burgers, kettle corn and frozen desserts are just some of the food items that will be available.

There are plans for

local entertainers to perform again this year around the courthouse.

There is no admission fee to visit and shop at Christmas on the Square and those attending are also encouraged to visit with some of the Burgaw merchants who will have special activities.”Christmas on the Square began last year, along with a special Polar Express showing at the Burgaw Train Depot.

And it is estimated that the two events brought more than eight thousand visitors to the Burgaw community and were tremendous successes for both.

Vendors will have their items ready for sale at 10am around the courthouse. So if you are looking for unique gifts for the entire family, chances are you will find them Saturday, Dec. 15 in downtown Burgaw.

find themselves under water in debt. Most farms have outstanding loans used to purchase and cultivate more land, buy new equipment or construct new buildings.

When the weather and markets turn against them farmers don’t have sufficient cash flow to service existing debt and credit markets aren’t eager to loan more for storm damages. Cash shortfalls necessitate operational cost reductions.

The average age of our farmers is 58 and the younger generation isn’t taking over. Young people who might want life on the farm recognize the threats or, in many instances, are being told that the farm that has been in their family for generations isn’t generating enough revenue to

support them and their parents. 77 percent of our farms generate less than $100,000 in annual revenues; 55 percent yield less than $10,0000.

Why do we call this a crisis? Agribusiness is the number one contributor to North Carolina’s economy, employing more than 700,000.

Fewer profitable farms mean job layoffs in rural counties already suffering. More troubles will further exacerbate the economic and population declines and widen the urban-rural divide.

Here’s what it means to you and me: if farming and agribusiness aren’t viable businesses in our state who is going to grow the food you eat and how much are you going to have to pay

for it? And how much additional public support will be required to prop up infrastructure, health care and education?

So before you finish the last of the turkey hash (by the way we are second in the production of turkeys in the U.S.) contact your legislators and urge them to allocate a good helping of hurricane aid to our farmers. And if you see a farmer – thank them!

This Thanksgiving was different Instead of going over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house we traveled east this Thanksgiving.

It was comforting to see that most of the furniture, downed trees and debris that had littered roadsides since Hurricane Florence had been removed, but it was equally clear that life was far from normal in our coastal plain region.

We have great empathy for all those who had damage and are glad our legislature is considering additional aid, but nowhere is that devastation greater than to our farmers.

Many farmers were already in crisis before Florence. Weather, always a major determinant in how well our $87 billion agribusiness economy fares, has not been favorable to farmers in recent years, with either too much rain or not enough. Hurricanes Matthew and Florence further destroyed cotton, sweet potatoes, tobacco or peanut crops; they either drowned or rotted in fields.

When the crop is ripe you harvest it and sell it or lose it. Some crops can be stored but not for long periods. Market prices play a huge factor in the farm crisis. According to statistics from the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services prices for tobacco, cotton, soybeans, corn, peanuts, winter wheat and potatoes were lower in 2016 (the last year their website reports) than in 2012 and are generally on a downward trend. Recent tariffs have further restricted sales and even though our government promised relief for those affected, that relief hasn’t materialized.

This leads to the fourth major crisis point: cash.

Contributing Writer Holiday Recipes The holidays bring out the best of our special family and traditional recipes to share with family and guests. Here are a few new recipes that you might enjoy adding to your holiday favorites. You can cut calories by using low fat ingredients, but the dishes will be less creamy.

Peach and blueberry baked pancake delight Serves 8.

The recipe may be made the day before and refrigerated before baking, then baked the next day. The recipe may be doubled and leftovers may be heated up and enjoyed another day.

1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 3 Large eggs 1 15- ounce container ricotta cheese or cottage cheese ½ Cup granulated sugar 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract 1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice ½ Cup peach preserves 1 Tablespoon butter 2 Tablespoons brown sugar 1 Tablespoon confectioners’ sugar 1 Cup fresh or frozen blueberries 1 Cup canned, sliced peaches, cut into quarters Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl with an electric mixer beat cream cheese and eggs until well blended. Add ricotta cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla, and lemon juice, and mix until well blended.

In a skillet add butter and brown sugar, bring to a low boil, add peach pieces and sautĂŠ until glazed and heated through.

In a hot greased skillet pour 1/3 cup pancake batter to make four pancakes; cook about three minutes on each side until done to a golden brown.

In an eight-inch square greased baking pan place four pancakes on the bottom, top with layers of 1/3 cream cheese mixture, Âź cup peach preserves. Repeat layers. Cover with remaining pancakes and cream cheese mixture. Place dish on baking sheet.

Bake for 40 to 50 minutes

or until center is set and edges are golden brown.

Sprinkle top with confectioners’ sugar and top with sautÊed peaches then with blueberries.

Scalloped creamy russet potatoes Serves 4-6 2 Pounds white russet potatoes, peeled and cut into ½ inch thick slices 2 Tablespoons butter 1 Small sweet onion, finely chopped 2 Cloves garlic, minced then smashed 1½ Cups heavy cream ½ Cup whole milk Ÿ Teaspoon dried powdered thyme Salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste 4 Ounces cheddar cheese, shredded, about one cup Place oven rack in middle position. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a Dutch oven over medium high heat melt butter. Add onion and cook until softened and are golden, about 4-5 minutes. Add garlic and sautĂŠ for two minutes. Add cream, milk, thyme, salt, and pepper, stir to mix well, add potatoes, and bring to a simmer.

Cover and simmer until potatoes are almost tender, about 15-18 minutes.

Transfer potato mixture to a two-quart gratin or baking dish, layering the potatoes, and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Bake until bubbling and top is a golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Let stand and cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Corn relish 1 Medium sweet onion, finely chopped 2 Pablamo or jalapeùo peppers, minced ½ Red bell pepper, finely diced 2-3 Cups yellow kernel corn, if frozen thaw 1 Medium ripe red tomato, diced ½ Cup fresh cilantro, chopped Juice of 1-2 Limes Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste In a saucepan over medium low heat sautÊ onion, for about 5-6 minutes, turn off heat; add peppers, stir and let cool. Pour into a bowl, add corn and tomatoes, stir ; add lime juice, to taste, and salt and pepper; stir. Fold in cilantro. Refrigerate or serve at room temperature.

Rack of lamb Serves 4.

2 Racks of lamb, 8 bones each, frenched Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste 2 Tablespoons olive oil 1 Tablespoon ground dried rosemary 1 Teaspoon garlic powder 1 Teaspoon onion powder ½ Teaspoon dried thyme

Rub lamb racks with olive oil, place top side up on racks in a shallow roasting pan, and set aside.

In a small bowl mix together thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper, mix well. Rub mixture evenly onto the outside of lamb racks, coating over all.

Place lamb in oven and roast for 18-22 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 145 degrees. Remove from oven, cover with foil, and let rest for 10-12 minutes.

Slice racks into chops. Serve with mint jelly and/or make a light sauce with the drippings from the bottom of the pan, adding dry white wine to make it thin.

Blueberry coffee crumble cake Cake 2 Cups all- purpose flour ž cup granulated sugar Ÿ Cup shortening (I like to use Crisco.) ž Cup milk or almond milk 1 Teaspoon lemon juice 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract 2 Large eggs 2½ teaspoons baking powder ½ Teaspoon salt 2 Cups fresh or frozen (thawed and drained and patted dry) blueberries Crumb Topping ½ Cup granulated sugar 2 Tablespoons brown sugar 1/3 Cup all-purpose flour ½ Teaspoon Chinese Fivespice powder or ground

Grease bottom of a 9x3-inch springform pan, and dust with flour. s4OPPING )N A BOWL WHISK together ½ cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, 1/3 cup flour, and Chinese Fivespice. Cut in cold butter with a fork or pastry cutter to form crumbs. Mix in nuts. Set aside. s#AKE )N A LARGE BOWL with an electric mixer, stir together flour, sugar, and shortening, add in milk, lemon juice, vanilla, eggs, baking powder, and salt, mixing well to combine evenly.

Dust blueberries with one tablespoon flour and shake off excess. Fold blueberries into batter. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle with crumb topping.

Bake for 45-50 minutes in oven or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes and remove side of pan. Remove bottom of pan. Place cake on a serving plate.

In a mixing glass cup combine glaze ingredients and mix until smooth and thin enough to drizzle, use extra water or confectioners’ sugar as needed. Drizzle glaze over warm coffee cake.

Topsail Elementary School held its Science Fair Nov. 14-16. Topsail High School students in Mrs. Burke’s and Mr. Jeffcoat’s classes helped judge the projects, along with teachers and other community members.

A Grinch-sized heart

For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.

I Samuel 16:7 When Samuel was to anoint the next King of Israel, He used a method that many would use today in hiring someone for a job. He considered looks, ability and charisma, but forgot the standard of God was what is in a person’s

heart. We can be fooled by an attractive smile, clever personality or a person’s impressive job rÊsumÊ.

However, God knows what is really behind all those things.

During Christmas we might drive by a person’s home and never see a lighted tree, a green wreath hanging on the door or even a huge red bow. We could think that because that person doesn’t have all those things show they lack the spirit of Christmas.

Nevertheless, we might not know the full reason why that person doesn’t have all the exterior images of Christmas

The program is part of the ACS Road to Recovery Program and is for cancer patients who have no other means of transpor-

tation to and from their cancer treatment appointments.

Pender County households containing a person aged 60 or more, or someone receiving disability benefits and services through the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services can apply for help covering the cost of heating their homes.

“All households can apply from Jan. 2 through Mar. 29,” said Wesley Stewart, Department of Social Services director.

The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program provides eligible households with a one-time payment to their heating vendor to

collect enough donations to work on some of these issues, in addition to the mowing.

“We’re just trying to get the word out. There used to be a governing body, but I think the last one they had was in the early 1990s.

One person is still living out of that group, and she donated her job to me as secretary,” said Lanier.

After Hurricane Florence, there were dead trees with broken limbs and azaleas that were growing out of control. A group of community members spent a day working at the cemetery to clean things up. The 15 to 20 workers, according to Lanier, were

all between the ages of 60 and 73. The group worked all day and some of them worked again the following day to finish up.

“It looks a lot better, and that helped out a lot.

We do have a number of families that have donated faithfully every year, but these people are dying out.

The older generations are dying out, and the younger generations don’t think of things like this that much,” said Lanier.

“Worry about nothing, pray about everything, and thank God for anything,” she said, and tur ned to continue on her way, leaving me with Emily and the cat.

“Aha,” I thought out loud, “Then there’s a major point coming up soon on your timeline. How do you think it’ll be turning 30?”

“That’s not going to happen,” she said, clamping down on the ‘under-30’ designation of being a young person.

“That’s right, because the day after you will join the ‘life after 30 group’.”

I recalled the admonition from the ‘60s, “You can’t trust anyone over 30.”

“Yes,” she laughed, “I’m going to go from 29 to 40.”

Emily sees herself as one day returning to the mid-west, and continuing her work in a museum.

And yet, she developed a fascination with the simple and sincere thoughts expressed in greeting cards, and started writing her own.

It costs nothing to be a poet.

She amassed a collection, and she and her mother went to a drug store and wrote down the addresses of the card publishers.

They loved her work and bought more, and she went on to write books about g rowing up, and won a song contest, and the song was recorded by a major artist.

Recently, on the way up the brick walk to the big house at Poplar Grove, I had paused and sat on the steps to visit with one of the cats, Missy. and two people came out and down the steps.

We exchanged pleasantries, and I mentioned to the older one that I had just been to a celebration of life for several people over 90 years old.

“Why are you telling me this?” she asked, seemingly

offset the high cost of heating during the cold-weather months.

Obituaries Peter Sean Dunbar BURGAW -- Peter Sean Dunbar, 52, of Burgaw, passed from this earthly life, Wednesday Nov. 28, 2018 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after battling a long fight with cancer.

He was born April 14, 1966 in Brown County Wisconsin, son of Alice Turk Dunbar and the late John Alvin Dunbar.

He is survived by, in addition to his mother, his wife, Susan James Dunbar of the home; a son Joshua John Dunbar of Wilmington; two broth-

ers, David Dunbar and Ivan Dunbar both of Wis.; three sisters, Meg Dunbar of Washington, Bridgette Elsen and husband Joe and Delores McGlachlin and husband Jeff all of Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Peter was an artist when it came to woodwork and he took pride in all he did. He was a loving husband and a wonderful father. Soft spoken and kind he was very strong in his faith, and a devoted member of the Burgaw congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

He was loved dearly and will truly be missed by the many lives he touched.

The family will receive friends Friday 6-7:30 p.m. at Harrell’s funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday Dec. 8, 2018 at the Burgaw Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness. Elder John Hawg will lead the service.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is roughly 70 miles of coastline area amongst several barrier islands in North Carolina.

Congress authorized it in 1937 as a first of its kind, and later in 1940, became the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area, another first, due to the cultural history of hunting in the area.

Lying in what is familiarly known as the Outer Banks, those aren’t the only firsts. Virginia Dare, born in 1587, was the first English-born child in the New World. She was also the first child christened in the New World into the Church of England.

The Native American Manteo was the first person christened into the Church of England and gave his name to the small town on Roanoke Island where the colony was located.

North along the outer

banks is where the first heavier than air flight took place by the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Strong winds and open land provided the lift and safety for the brothers to successfully take to the air. The Wright Brothers Memorial stands where they made history, and markers show the various lengths of the flight paths from that event.

Getting to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a long drive made to seem longer, with long stretches of road with open fields as the only sights and small towns dotted here and there. Add in the anticipation of the arrival, and the travel time doubles in feel.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore boasts some of the darkest skies east of the Mississippi due to the distance from cities and artificial light.

Three lighthouses stand and operate there, Bodie Island Lighthouse, the norther nmost standing 156 feet tall with a black and white striped pattern, Cape Hatteras light, located on Hatteras Island is considered the most important lighthouse on the eastern coast due to the protective beacon marking the dangerous shoals and

standing as the nation’s tallest and second tallest in the world at 210 feet with a range of 28 miles, and Ocracoke Lighthouse, the state’s oldest operating light standing 75 feet tall.

Two other lighthouses are in the general area with the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, a river light, located in Manteo on Roanoke Island, and Currituck Lighthouse, located in the northern portion of the outer banks standing 162 feet tall in the town of Corolla.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore and its lighthouses are along an area that is particularly treacherous for seagoers, as the Gulf Stream and Labrador Currents collide, causing rough seas and strong storms.

Separating two portions of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. This is where some of the wildlife magic happens.

Pea Island NWR was established in 1937 as well as the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Encompassing just shy of 6000 acres spanning 13 miles no wider than one mile, and close to 26000 acres of bordering waters, the Pea Island NWR is known as a

birder’s paradise.

While the area is either a home or temporary home to 25 species of mammals, 24 species of reptiles and 5 species of amphibians, the main attraction is the 365 species of birds. Some 2.7 million visitors come to the island yearly that include birders and nature and wildlife photographers.

During the winter months, the skies become blanketed with wintering snow geese and tundra swan, as well as numerous species of ducks and other waterfowl. Recently a span of 5 miles of beach was covered in wing to wing cormorants, turning the usually white sands into a sheet of black feathers.

Ideal for a day trip during the weekend, it is a good way to get away for a mini vacation during these cold days.

Award honors local volunteers Nominations open for Governor’s Volunteer Service Award Nominations are being accepted for the 2018 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award in Pender County.

The Governor’s Volunteer Service Award honors the true spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals, groups and businesses that make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service.

Any person, group, or entity from the public, non-profit and private sector may be nominated for an award to their county award coordinator. There

are cate gories for the type of nominee (senior, youth, faith-based, family, group, business, etc.).

Additional categories are based upon the area of service (animal, environmental, disaster, youth, preservation, etc.). County recommendations are reviewed by the Commission and awards are given out in the counties.

The Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service was implemented in 2006 to recognize the top 20-25 volunteers in the state. Medallion recipi-

ents are nominated at the county level by the county award coordinator. Only one Medallion nomination is permitted per county.

A statewide panel reviews and evaluates all these nominations to determine the award recipients.

Pender County FEMA center to change hours FEMA disaster recovery centers will change their hours of operation beginning Monday, Dec. 3, 2018.

The centers will operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays.

FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments, but eligible homeowners and renters may be able to receive money from FEMA for losses not covered by insurance to help pay for basic home repairs, temporary rental assistance and other needs such as replacing

personal property. FEMA Individual Assistance is grant money that does not have to be repaid.

By Bobby Norris and Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writers Topsail headed to New Bern last Saturday and finished fourth (114.0 points) in the prestigious and tough 18-team Swiss Bear Classic. Host New Bern was first (158.5), followed by West Carteret (157.0) and Croatan (148.5). Dixon was sixth (87.0).

Three Pirates – juniors Ethan Rivenbark (126 pounds) and Ben Baker (13), and freshman Devon Bell (160) won gold medals.

Rivenbark (10-0) drew an opening-round bye as the No. 1 seed at 126 then recorded a 15-3 major-decision win in round two. Rivenbark decked Northside’s Keith Harris in the semifinals, then put New Bern’s Thau Rocham on his back in the championship bout.

Baker (8-1) was the No. 2 seed and earned first-round bye at 113. The Pirate junior racked up a 12-2 majordecision victory in the second round, and wasted little time in pinning Northside’s Jeremiah Figueroa in the semifinals. Baker then recorded a 9-3 win over topseeded Max Buglisi of Croatan to take the top spot in the weight class.

Bell (8-1) moved into the second round via a bye before recording a 9-4 win by decision in the second round. Bell then pinned top-seeded Colton Sullivan of Croatan in 3:40, earning at shot at New Bern’s secondseeded Connor Wrought (11-1) in the finals. Bell handed Wrought his first loss of the season by virtue of a goldmedal winning 4-2 decision.

Two Pirates – senior Nathan Bray (120) and freshman Jakob Mackleer (106) finished fourth in their weight class.

Last Tuesday the Pirates ventured into New Hanover County for a tri-meet with county neighbor Trask and Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference foe New Hanover, coming home victorious by a wide margin in both matches.

Topsail gave up a single bout against Trask in 58-6 rout of the Titans. Trask’s Zion Cruze earned those six points when he decked Topsail’s Ethan Parker at 182-pounds. On the Topsail side, the Pirates got pins

The Wildcats didn’t fare much better as they forfeited five weight classes in a 72-9 loss to Topsail.

Baker, Bray, McRae, Bell, Sims, Allison, and Holmes all recorded their second wins by fall on the evening.

Powerful North Brunswick is at Topsail Wednesday before the Pirates head to Croatan Friday for the twoday Beast-of-the-East Tournament.

The Titans lost to Topsail 58-6 last week but beat Wilmington New Hanover 48-34. Cruse, Kolby Lanier, Kendin Carr, Rogan Heath and Jacob Johnson picked up wins against the Wildcats.

The Titans participated in the Caleb Hawkins invite at West Brunswick last Saturday. Rogan Heath was 4-0 in the tournament and won 1st place at 120 pounds. He is 12-3 on the season. Zion Cruse was 5-0 for the day and won his weight class. He is 13-1 on the season.

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer While the swimmers enjoyed a week off from competition, the runners, jumpers, and throwers on the Topsail girls’ and boys’ winter track teams headed to Swansboro on a frigid Wednesday, with the girls finishing in second place (04 points), and the boys coming in fourth (41 points).

Junior sprinter Madison Lofton and sophomore distance runners Isabella Bufalini were the each

won twice for the Topsail girls. Lofton was first (7.01) in the 55-meter dash and first in the 500-meter dash, while Buffalini captured gold medals in the 1,000meter run (3:19.40) and in the 1,600-meter run (5:39).

Freshman Naili Schoelberger was fourth (7.30) in the 55-meter dash and tied for fourth (14-8) in the long jump with teammate Arianna Blevins – who was also second in the triple jump (30-2). Kaylee Adams was second (26-2-/2) in the shot put, followed by teammate Alycia Artman (25-9-

1/2).

Other Lady Pirate scorers were Skylar Libretto in the 500-meter run (1:34.4), Bailey Wells in the 1,600meter run, freshman Mayla Westin the 1,000-meter run (3:54.00), and Rini Hermawan in the hurdles.

For the boys, Cameron Barras was first in both the 55-meter dash (6.60) and the long jump (20-3), teammate Ian Webster was right behind in the long jump (18-3), and the boys’ 4x200-meter relay team finished second (1:45.70).

Lady Patriots fall at Topsail, drop three conference games

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Pender Lady Patriots are hoping that this is the year that they make a move in the Coastal 8 Conference standings. They hope that their tough nonconference schedule will prepare them for the rigors of conference play.

Last week that tough non-conference slate proved too tough to tame

with the Lady Patriots dropping three games for the week.

First up was the James Kenan Lady Tigers. In the first matchup the Lady Patriots played well, earning the win. This time around the Lady Tigers took a 6764 win in overtime. The score was tied after each quarter of play and the scoreboard read 60-60 at the end of regulation.

Next up was a visit to Topsail High School.

The Lady Pirates are on a roll early in the season and would prove to be too much for the Patriots, taking a 74-36 win.

Topsail jumped out to a 17-5 lead after one quarter of play and stretched that lead to 36-15 at the half. A 22-10 third frame erased any doubt as to the win-

ner of the game.

Pender finished the week off at Laney High School. The Bucs used their run and gun style of offense along with a very good defense to outscore the Pats 74-21. Pender sophomore Tyanna Holmes led the Pats with eight points.

Pender is now 1-4 on the year. They hosted Laney on Friday.

In the North Brunswick win, the Titans played within their selves. The teams were tied at the end of the first period with North Brunswick taking a 28-23 lead at the break.

Trask got things going in the third frame. Will Berry and Robert Pridgen led the Titans to an 18-9 advantage in the period and gave the Rocky Point team a 41-37 lead going into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter was a very competitive stanza. The Scorpions were within a point with time expiring. A Scorpion layup tickled the twines as time expired but the officials said it came after the buzzer, thus preserving the Titans first win of the year.

Trask had three play-

Most of the people in Pender County that follow high school athletics and in particular high school football are aware of what I call the transfer that rocked Pender County.

This happened shortly before the football season started and rubbed quite a few people wrong.

I have not touched on this subject in the paper because I know that it is in fact a very touchy subject. It’s time I air my opinion on the subject.

B.J. Jordan transferred to Southwest Onslow a few days before the season. His father moved and he followed. That put him in the Southwest Onslow school district. This was investigated and proven to be the case.

Now, I have been approached many times and told that everybody knows that this is not the case. I don’t know that it is not the case. I do know what his father told me and I believe him and will continue to believe him until proven otherwise.

Let me put it this way. If I had a son that I thought could play at the next level and I moved to a district that had a great football team, I would not hesitate to take him with me.

Finally, BJ Jordan is still one of our own. He grew up in the county and still has many roots here. My suggestion would be to pull for this young man this week. In my mind he represents every coach that ever worked with him every time he touches the field.

I am sure he still has many friends in Pender County that feel like he is in the best place.

The Trask boys’ basketball team earned a win over North Brunswick last week. The Titans had three players reach double figures. Will Berry led the team with 13 points while Robert Pridgen chipped in 11. Henri Lambe scored 10 points with Watson Orr contributing nine.

Next up was the South Brunswick Cougars. The Brunswick County team was smarting over a loss to

Topsail. Khalil Marshall led all scorers with 23 points while Malcolm McLean chipped in 18 in the two point loss.

The Topsail girls are off and running. They are undefeated after winning last week. The Lady Pirates slammed Pender last week at home. Senior Madi Kita came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points, and juniors Sydney Hartgrove (14 points, eight rebounds) and Julia Sullivan (11 points, six boards, here steals, two blocked shots) joined Kita in double figures. Lauren Caveness had 14 points and three steals in the Pirates win over East Columbus. Payton Little had 11 points and 10 boards.

The Topsail boys basketball team is off to a great start. Derek Gardner had 18 points and Jamison Long pitched in13 in the Pirates win over Pender. Jackson Sullivan scored 16 points in the win over East Columbus. Amir Andrews scored 15 points to lead Topsail over Dixon.

Eleven of the 12 Topsail girls scored, and the 12th made her presence felt on the defensive end of the

court, and on the boards.

Led by Kita’s 18 points, the players off the Topsail bench accounted for 34 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and three blocked shots, while forcing almost half of the Lady Patriots’ 17 turnovers.

“I think, from last year, we’ve improved like crazy and we’re playing together really well,” Kita said. “The girls we have on the floor this year are just working together really well. We have it together this year and I think we can go pretty far.

“It doesn’t matter who starts or who comes off the bench, everybody does something that contributes to the team, no matter whether it’s assists,

rebounds, steals, or points.

Every single person who came off the bench can put points on the board. I know we haven’t played the best teams yet but, this year, I think we have a chance to do well against them.”

The week started with an extremely easy 70-24 home victory over the Lady Gators of East Columbus.

Much like the season opener against Swansboro, balance was the name of the game as Lauren Caveness (14 points, three steals), Payton Little (11 points, 10 rebounds), Julia Sullivan (10 points, nine rebounds, seven assists), and Madison Kita (10 points), two steals, blocked shot) led a balance attack that saw 10 of the 12 girls who played hitting the

scoring column.

The Topsail defensive effort produced 16 steals and forced the Lady gators into 30 turnovers. East Columbus made just seven field goals (7-or-41; 17.3%) while the Lady Pirates hit on 30of-66 shots (42.4%) from the field, and 7-of-10 (70%) from the charity stripe.

Sullivan and Sydney Hartgrove (six points, five rebounds) led the opening salvo that accounted for a 17-7 first-period advantage.

Kita came off the bench to score six of her 10 points in the second period, leading a 19-4 disparity over the second eight minutes, and a 36-11 halftime advantage that removed any semblance of competitiveness from the contest.

The Lady Pirates concluded their three-game week with a resounding 60-19 win over Dixon. For the fourth-straight game Topsail had a different leading, scorer with Sidbury topping the statistical sheet with 15 points (six rebounds, three steals), followed by Caveness with 10 points. Eight Lady Pirates scored and Kapiko utilized his entire bench by the midway point of the second period.

The Topsail defense recorded 10 steals – led by Kita with four – and forced the Lady Bulldogs into 31 turnovers.

“Early on we were turning the ball over and not running our plays, and after a while we started running our plays and getting better shots,” Gardner said. “We have 12 guys who can play every night, and it’s a case of next man up. The week opened for Topsail with a 63-57 win over visiting East Columbus.

After forging a 31-23 lead at halftime behind nine second-period points from Long (11 points), the Pirates outscored the Gators

16-8 in the third period to open up a 47-31 advantage entering the final eight minutes of the game.

But some point decision making opened the door for East Columbus, and they did their best to kick it down by outscoring Topsail 26-16 in that final stanza. A 7-0 run closed the Gators deficit to 51-38, and a 16-8 run brought the visitors even closer at 5954 with 1:00 remaining in regulation.

Montano hit two free throws with 44.1 seconds left to take the 59-54 lead out to 61-54. Gardner scored Topsail’s 62nd point on a free throw with 24.5 seconds on the clock, and Montano drained a charity toss with 5.7 seconds.

“We have a lot of guys who can score and we were able to move the ball around pretty well,” Long said. “It also allows us to substitute early and often, which helps keep our legs fresh.”

The final game of the week turned in to a barnburner when Dixon came from 15-points down (64-49) early in the fourth quarter before succumbing to Top-

sail 76-72. The Pirates’ in ability to hit free throws throughout the game almost did them in.

Down the stretch, Topsail missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity six times, allowing Bulldog Everett Lewis (20 points, 12 in fourth quarter and his teammates to outscored them 26-16, erasing a 14point (60-46) lead after three periods.

“Obviously we are very excited to win and to be where we are so far early in the season,” Rochelle said. “But we kept them in the game with our poor foul shooting, we kept them in the game with some poor, late defense, and we kept them in the game by allowing a ton of second-chance points on their offense end

Amir Andrews scored 15 points to lead yet another balanced attack for Topsail. Long added 12 points, Gardner hit for 10 points, Ryan Morris added eight, Montano had seven, and Sullivan and Vasquez each had six.

The Pirates were on the road at White Oak Tuesday, and head back to Jacksonville for a game with the Cardinals of Jacksonville High Wednesday.

Lady Titans The Lady Titans traveled with the boys to North Brunswick. They found that the Lady Scorpions were not as hospitable as the boys. A 12-0 second

Trask outscored them 16-7 in the third frame but fell 51-33. Anisa Lewis led all scorers with 19 points.

Lewis was not available for the home game verse South Brunswick on Friday night. The Lady Titans beat South a week ago. However, without Lewis the Lady Cougars had their way with Trask, taking the win.

Next up was the Laney Buccaneers. The Bucs play in the tough Mideastern Conference and are always a tough out for the Pats.

This time was no different as they earned a close 76-67 win. No other details were available.

The Patriots are now 2-3 for the year. They hosted Laney on Friday night in their only action of the week.

Thompson has big shoes to fill at Trask

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer As a high school wrestler, Jervon Faison worked hard.

He wrestled all four years at Heide Trask and through hard work and diligence became a state champion during his senior year.

Mr. Faison is now paying it forward in a big way, helping his younger brother Jasheen Thompson find his way.

Jasheen has worked hard to become a good high school grappler. He wrestles in the heavyweight division where the competition is full of upperclassmen with size and strength.

Mr. Thompson won his first match last week, pinning the Pender heavyweight late in the match.

Jasheen is just a tenth grader and is wrestling for the first time. He is learning on the go. Jasheen Thompson looks to follow in his big brothers footsteps – and that is a remedy for success.

Bray looks for strong senior year at Topsail

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer As a junior Nathan Bray made some noise in the 3A ranks of the state wrestling scene. He finished third at the eastern regionals before making it to the state meet.

He was 1-2 at the state 3A meet but gained some valuable experience.

In this his senior year he is looking forward to taking the next step in his wrestling career, a regional and state championship.

Nathan Bray finished the 2017-18 regular season with a sterling 35-1 record.

He was the Mid-Eastern Conference’s top 113-pound wrestler and showed great promise going into the regional. He spent part of last season as the top grappler in the Post & Voice On the Mat’s top eight.

If last year is any indication of what’s to come, look for Nathan Bray to take the next step. That next step may very well be a regional and state title.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer When the Pender Patriot grapplers hit the mat this year they will have a good mix of young and inexperienced wrestlers along with a few young men that have wrestled for a while.

Some of those young men have found success while others are looking for their first taste of success on the mat. Then there is senior Andrew Ocampo.

Mr. Ocampo has wrestled for the Patriots since arriving at the school. He was very good out of the gate, finding success in the early going. However, last year he seemed to find his stride, making a deep run in the post season.

Andrew comes into this season as one of the most experienced grapplers on the team. He is expected to make another run deep into the post season. The coaches expect Andrew Ocampo to leave it all on the mat every time he competes.
