Damage from Hurricane Florence kept Hampstead United Methodist from holding their annual Night in Bethlehem program this season. But church members wanted to do something for the community, so a living nativity was presented. Rain stopped the Friday program, but the church persevered and held the program Saturday evening.

Violators will be fined for illegal dumping From Staff Reports The Pender County Sheriff ’s Office will enforce statutes regarding littering and illegal dumping of debris along the roadways. County officials have received numerous reports of illegal dumping along roadways – an act they claim will cost taxpayers millions of dollars to clean-up. “We are working with county emergency management and Pender County administration to aggressively enforce the littering laws, said Alan Cutler, Pender County Sheriff. Residents who witness illegal dumping of debris on Pender County’s roadways should report a license plate number, the company’s name and, if possible, a photo of the dumping. The non-emergency number to call is 910-259-1212. “We are monitoring the debris that is being left on the roadside, said Tom Collins, Pender County Emergency Manager. “Commercial contractors are required to dispose of debris at the transfer station or an approved landfill. Collins said homeowners have until Dec. 21 to move their construction debris to the roadway – including along dirt roads. However, that is a service for Pender County homeowners and doesn’t include waste from commercial contractors. “Commercial contractors who dump debris along our roadways are in viola-

Nature Conservancy acquires Black River land From Staff Reports The Nature Conservancy today announced that it has purchased property on the Black River that is home to the oldest trees east of the Rockies – bald cypress dating to Roman times. Duke Energy, in conjunction with an agreement with the Cape Fear Conservation and Preservation Fund, provided $225,000 for the project, which the Conservancy is matching with dollars from private donors. The Black River serves as the border between Pender County and Bladen County, as well as portions of Sampson County. “These trees are one of North Carolina’s and the country’s natural treasures, said Conservancy Executive Director Kath-
erine Skinner. “We have protected more than 16,000 acres on the Black River. But these trees are the centerpiece of that work.â€? The 319-acre tract is in Bladen County. It includes the oldest known stand of bald cypress trees in the world, called the Three Sisters. The bald cypress live inPush the wet swamps Mowers • Lawn Tractors • Zero Turn along the river. The new Trimmers & Chainsaws acquisition also includes nice upland forests farther away from the river. “We’re committed to protecting and enhancing the natural resources that future generations will depend on,â€? said Stephen De May, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president. “We value the work The Nature Conservancy is doing to
