BOC approves debris pickup along private unpaved roads By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher Pender County Commissioners voted Monday to have construction and demolition debris picked up on private unpaved roads and private property. Commissioners approved the action with a cap of $600,000 additional

funds for the debris pickup. This week’s vote reverses a decision by the Board two weeks ago when a motion by Commissioner David Williams to remove debris along private unpaved roads died for lack of a second. At the Nov. 5 meeting Chairman George Brown expressed his support for the motion while being unable to

make the second. Commissioners David Piepmeyer, Jackie Newton, and Fred McCoy would not offer a second. A standing-room-only crowd packed the Commissioners meeting room to express their desire to have debris picked up along private roads and property. Many residents recounted emotional

stories of their situations, losing their homes and belongings. More than a few threats of voting commissioners out of office were made by angry residents. Several speakers pointed out that county residents all pay property taxes, regardless of where they live, and deserved to be treated equally in the hur-

County officials talk hurricane recovery with Cooper

Governor visits Pender County flood areas From Staff Reports Governor Roy Cooper visited volunteers working on a home on Croomsbridge Road, Nov. 15. “We appreciate the volunteers who have assisted in our Hurricane Florence recovery efforts, said Cooper. The governor met with volunteers from AmeriCorps who pulled drywall and flood-damaged goods from a home. AmeriCorps joins Baptist Men Disaster Team, Rubicon, and numerous churches who have volunteered to muck out and demo houses. Cooper also met with Pender County Commissioner Jackie Newton, Pender County Manager Randell Woodr uf f and Pender County Emergency Manager Tom Collins in addition to other county personnel. County officials urged for Cooper’s assistance as counties, including Pender, struggle with post-Florence housing issues, infrastructure, and recovery efforts. Cooper met with Con-

gress to secure an additional $5 billion in federal monies for Hurricane Florence recovery. Cooper met with North Carolina’s congressional delegation to garner their support as well as Housing and Urban Development Director Secretary Dr. Ben Carson and White House Security Advisor Doug Fears. Cooper said less than one-quarter of the people affected by Hurricane Florence had flood insurance. In Pender County, more than 1,200 flood insurance claims have been filed, paying an estimated $47.5 million in claims to date, according to FEMA. Pender County leaders asked for efficient distribution of assistance. Hurricane Florence was a record-breaking rain and flood event, battering all of Pender County. Pender County remains under a State of Emergency. Since the federal disaster declaration for Hur-

Burgaw kicks off holiday with tree lighting Nov. 23

By Lori Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer

In keeping with tradition, the Town of Burgaw will kick off the holiday season with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting. The event will take place Nov. 23 from 6 until 8 p.m. in the Courthouse Square. The popular event will feature local groups including schools, churches and community members singing Christmas carols, and of course the main event - the lighting of the big Christmas tree. This year’s theme has been appropriately named Homet ow n Ch r i st m a s, since the entire town is known for decorating with

is time-honored flair. Year after year, many visitors make their way from neighboring communities to catch a glimpse of the decorations and enjoy the hometown Christmas sentiment that Burgaw has always offered. “After the ceremony, we will have Santa Claus is Coming to Town, said Parks and Recreation Coordinator Zachary White. “Santa will be at the Burgaw Community House, across the street from the Courthouse Square. We

will also have cookie decorating so the kids can come and decorate cookies. White continued, “ Since it is Black Friday, and it’s a traditional time for people to go holiday shopping, several of our downtown merchants will be open as well. We encourage people to visit them and keep their money in Pender County and Burgaw. I think this event will help take everyone’s mind off of everything that’s going on
