Superstreet, bypass project are linked, engineer says

By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher While the latest draft of the N.C. Department of Transportation’s 10-year plan has the Hampstead superstreet project pushed back to 2023, DOT officials say there is a good reason for the change.

DOT Deputy Division Engineer for District 3 Chad Kimes says the superstreet project and the Hampstead bypass project are linked together. “The Hampstead bypass and the median project are lumped together as one project. We can’t go out there and work on the superstreet until the bypass is complete and the alternate route open,� Kimes said. “The median project will be let in 2020. It will take three years to open up the bypass. It will be 2023 before we can begin on the median project.�

The projects are still on schedule. Once the bypass is open, we are going to jump on the superstreet project,� Kimes said.

The Hampstead median/superstreet project will include a grass median along U.S. 17 through Hampstead, with u-turnarounds to eliminate left turns along the highway.

Left turns are often the cause of accidents in the area.

The superstreet will be a combination of u-turn bulbs and regular intersections with traffic signals. “There will be a lot more u-turns than some superstreets in the state.

We want to make sure the businesses are within 1,500 feet of a turnaround,� said Kimes said.

The driver of the first vehicle, 23 year old James Coleman Thomason of Topsail Beach, sustained serious injuries and was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

impaired, two counts of felony death by motor vehicle, open alcohol container, improper passing, careless and reckless driving, driving left of center, exceeding posted speed, failure to and reduce speed.. He is being held on a $100,000 secured bond.

dune restoration project, adding 25 feet of dune to the areas where the dune has been totally lost, and building any remaining dunes to the 25-foot level. This cost would be estimated at 18.75 million dollars.

As an alternative, the town could elect to close the gaps in the existing dunes, build dune where it has been totally destroyed, and protect the hypercritical sections identified at the south end of town.

This could be done for about $5 million, which should be eligible for FEMA reimbursement. Gibson cautioned that contrary to what many folks think, FEMA is a reimbursement program and money must first be fronted by the town. “Every dime spent comes out of local government coffers, then at some point in time FEMA reimburses them,� Gibson said.

A second possibility would be to rebuild to prestorm condition, restoring both the dune line and the beach profile to where it was back in August, 2018 at a cost of approximately $23.5 million.

Doing so would utilize sand from Banks Channel, identified in the pre-storm beach restoration project as good material, and pumping it as much as six miles. This project would hopefully utilize the state’s Shallow Draft Inlet Fund, which provides for a 2/3 cost sharing, and the state’s cur rently underfunded beach fund, which requires a 50/50 cost sharing.

Gibson noted that following the storm, coastal communities submitted requests totaling $162 million from the state.

The third scenario is what Gibson called the “Hold the Line� project, combining the restoration of the dunes with the original beach restoration project to change the profile of the beach entirely, forcing wave energy to dissipate offshore and thereby reduce erosion, while building a functioning protective dune line. At a cost of $34

million this would appear to be unaffordable for the town, even if it could secure 50/50 cost sharing from the state.

The fourth option is a federal project, something the town relied upon happening for many years, but which was never funded.

This project, which includes North Topsail if ever funded by the Corps of Engineers, carries a price tag of $87 million and would require 35 percent of the cost to be borne by the state and towns. As resident Jack Solak stated in the public comment portion of the meeting “You know we’re not going to get any federal money. We’ve been talking about it for 20 years – it’s not going to happen,� said resident Jack Solak.

Councilman Donald Helms said the council has been working on this for years on a beach renourishment plan. While Councilwoman Nelva Albury lamented the “over $100 million� the town had put out since the storm, she indicated that the tax which funds beach renourishment was unlikely to sunset as was originally promised.

Councilman Fowler said the board has worked to keep tight control of taxes and spending during the 15 years they’ve served, and the decision to implement the small tax that’s devoted to beach renourishment.

Surf City has an accumulated balance of $11.8 million in the fund which was originally intended to meet the requirements of a federal project.

Councilwoman Teresa Batts offered an interesting suggestion – rather than pushing sand from the beach to build berms, which is not recommended, why not actually scoop sand at the tideline, at low tide, and then deposit up on the berm line. This could save considerable sums expected from trucking sand from outside sources.

Slow down I absolutely love to dim the lights and sit around the Christmas tree over the holidays. I remember doing it as a child, and still enjoy it immensely.

Magnify the magic by adding a cocktail, some cheese and crackers, olives, nuts and chocolate.

Everyone gets so busy with the hustle and bustle of the holidays I think some miss the entire season. By Christmas, many are too exhausted and grumpy to enjoy themselves (Sound familiar?) We shopped online and made photo books this year; simple stuff that everyone can enjoy year round and we got it all mailed early. There is still something very exciting about coming home to packages at your door, even if you bought them yourself for other people.

I remember the childhood excitement of big brown boxes filled with presents appearing on the front porch weeks before Christmas and still love sending and receiving them.

What an unexpected gift I received when my trip to work in Greensboro was suddenly postponed by snow. I was showered, dressed, packed and ready to roll, when my client finally emailed to report they had 10 inches of snow so she postponed our program until January.

Suddenly, two days I expected to travel and work became mine to do with as I wished.

I joyfully invested my day shopping for the perfect dress for our New Year’s nuptials. Surprisingly, I found everything I needed and then some at the first store I stopped.

Met my bestie for endless enchiladas and margaritas before heading home to dim the lights and sit around the tree. A perfect day in my mind and completely unexpected; any extra productivity was gravy.

Just as I celebrate birth month for myself, I savor the entire season between Thanksgiving and Epiphany. By then, we have kicked off a new year and it is game on.

2019 is off to a great start with the usual efforts of planning purging and shedding those holiday pounds we packed on. Our big adventure was eloping to Asheville and soon it will be spring when we will celebrate with friends and family. The older we get the faster time flies, making us more appreciative of every minute and every memory.

Slow down, enjoy the moment without worry of what comes next. Sit and savor the simplicity of doing nothing because all time wasted is not wasted time. Cuddle someone close, sip cider, eat snacks, dim the lights and enjoy the Christmas spirit year round.

Do not be anxious about anything; enjoy the experience of making memories because in the end they are all we have to take with us.

Being our best There’s a whole lot of talk these days about toxic masculinity, whatever that is.

I am of the opinion that many of today’s problems come from a lack of masculinity.

Society has taught men that we are inherently bad. We are often painted as barely one step above Australopithecus, club-wielders incapable of thoughts outside of sex and food. Hence, there are marches to empower women, although I have yet to see how using teaching small children that the foulest of vulgar language, wearing huge genitalia as costumes, or other such antics empower anyone.

There are lengthy, erudite, dumbed-down opinion pieces on how we men can’t help our crude stupidity, and we should be allowed out of our cages only after completing sensitivity training, and then only while wearing a shock collar.

Dear Concerned, Many seniors worry about memory lapses as they get older fearing it may be the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease or some other type of dementia. To get some insight on the seriousness of your husband’s problem, here are some resources you can turn to for help.

Warning signs As we grow older, some memory difficulties – such as forgetting names or misplacing items from time to time – are associated with normal aging. But the symptoms of dementia are much more than simple memory lapses.

While symptoms can vary greatly, people with dementia may have problems with shor t-ter m memory, keeping track of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning and preparing meals, remembering appointments or traveling out of the neighborhood.

To help you and your husband recognize the difference between typical age-related memory loss and a more serious problem, the Alzheimer’s Association provides a list of 10 warning signs that you can assess at 10signs. org.

Memory screening Another good place to help you get a handle on your husband’s memory problems is through the National Memory Screening Program, which offers free memory screenings throughout National Memory Screening Month in November.

Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, this free service provides a confidential, face-to-face memory screening that takes about 10 minutes to complete and consists of questions and/or tasks to evaluate his memory status.

Screenings are given by doctors, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers or other healthcare professionals in thousands of sites across the country. It’s also important to know that this screening is not a diagnosis. Instead, its goal is to detect problems and refer individuals with these problems for further evaluation.

It’s best to check for a screening location at the end of October, because

new sites are constantly being added.

See a doctor If you can’t find a screening site in your area, make an appointment with his primary care doctor to get a cognitive checkup. This is covered 100 percent by Medicare as part of their annual wellness visit. If his doctor suspects any problems, he may give him the Memory Impairment Screen, the General Practitioner Assessment of Cognition, or the Mini Cog. Each test can be given in less then five minutes.

Depending on his score, his doctor may order follow-up tests or simply keep it on file so he can see if there are any changes down the road. Or, he may then refer him to a geriatrician or neurologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating memory loss or Alzheimer’s disease.

Keep in mind that even if your husband is experiencing some memory problems, it doesn’t necessarily mean he has dementia. Many memory problems are brought on by other factors like stress, depression, thyroid disease, side effects of medications, sleep disorders, vitamin deficiencies and other medical conditions. And by treating these conditions he can reduce or eliminate the problem.

Walters for initial entry rotary wing pilot training, in Destin, TX. From there, the completion of that school was done at Fr. Rucker, AL. “I applied for flight training with the knowledge I would be going to Vietnam, in ‘67. My first helicopter was the OH-23 Hiller, the ‘D’ model which was the trainer. They had two other helicopters, a PH-55, and a Bell 13. The ‘55’ was for people under 5’ 8” because of the ability to reach the anti-torque pedals, the ‘23’ and ‘13’ were for taller pilots who didn’t need to adjust the pedals.

“My flight classes got diverted because of the buildup at the time. Classes at the time were going from 150-200 soldiers. The average flight school class today is about 20.

“At Ft. Polk, the barracks that I was in were WW-II barracks. My father, in 1950, was a company commander for an ordnance company and I took basic training in the same billet he had commanded. Boot camp started in March and ended in May. Because I was going to flight school, I didn’t have to go off for AIT (Advanced Infantry Training). Flight school lasted 9 months.”

We talked for a while about the equipment, the technical arcania about engine type and size, lifting capability and such things of interest to pilots.

Mike continued, “At Ft. Rucker you got Advanced Instrument and Huey training. I didn’t get qualified in the OH-13 Sioux, what you see on M*A*S*H (the TV show). The Huey (UH-1) is a Utility helicopter. It’s turbine powered, the OH-13 has a piston

engine.”

“Your favorite?” I asked.

“The OH-6 that I transitioned to, the Scout.”

The OH-6 Scout was a Light Observation Helicopter with enormous capability, and Wikipedia lists some of the world records: “The OH-6 set 23 for helicopters in 1966 for speed, endurance and time to climb. On 26 March 1966, Jack Schwiebold set the closed circuit distance record in a YOH-6A at Edwards Air Force Base, California. He flew without landing for 1,739.96 mi. Subsequently, on 6 April 1966, Robert Ferry set the long distance world record for helicopters.

He flew from Culver City, California, with over a ton of fuel, to Ormond Beach, Florida, covering a total of 2,213.04 mi, in 15 hours, and near the finish at up to 24,000 feet altitude. As of 2018, these records still stand.”

“In April 1968 I graduated from flight school.

My parents picked me up at Ft. Rucker, and we travelled back to Wilmington. I had 30 days leave.

Martin Luther King was assassinated right after I graduated and we saw the country in a state of unrest with martial law, as we drove back from Alabama.

“We came through, I think it was Augusta, Georgia, and here was a checkpoint with National Guard soldiers, armed with M-1 Garands checking ID. My father had military ID and I did too so they let us go on our way.”

“I remember that well,” I told Mike. Augusta was my home town, and I had been home from the Navy only a few months, and back in college.

“I do want to go back a bit,” Mike said. “I was a 1966 graduate on New Hanover High School. I was also the first graduating class out of Roland-Grise, seventh, eighth, and ninth grade.

“In the ninth grade, I lived on the Intracoastal Waterway in Porter’s Neck. My father was teaching in the high school there. I had access to Figure Eight Island, with no houses there. I had a flat bottom boat with a 10 h,p, motor that I would load up and go over to Figure Eight for fishing and surfing. Having gone through water skiing, two skis, slalom ski, water coolers (tops) – knee boarding, skim boarding.”

Imagine travelling from Raleigh to Charlotte in about 22 minutes; not by train, plane or car, but instead in a pod, transported through an almost friction-free tunnel. This concept is under experimentation right now, as nearly 1,000 learned last week at the N.C. Transportation Summit.

The commercial shows men as mindless drones encouraging children to fight, and male executives as sleazeballs about a half-inch from a sexual harassment suit or a welldeserved beating. The commercial implies that bullying, sexual harassment, objectifying and running down women, and other behavior is considered normal.

Normal for whom, I must ask.

I was bullied – try being a chubby kid bigger than the kids two grades up, and unwilling to fight. I learned to fight to defend myself, and found friends who backed me up. I stood up for myself before friends stood with me.

You stand up for yourself, and your friends, and even strangers, or you don’t have the right to call yourself a man. I don’t tolerate bullying, but I also don’t tolerate the victim mentality.

Had I ever been engaged in a fight in the presence of adults -- like the commercial shows – I can guarantee you no one would have laughed and said “Boys will be boys.”

The fight would have been stopped, the principals questioned, and if necessary, punished. The fight might have been finished later in private, but there would have been ramifications for that as well.

Both my upbringing and my faith give me a very, very low tolerance for blue humor and language.

I don’t see such as being a necessary part of being a man.

There were times when I was not a gentleman toward a lady. I regret that behavior; a stern guilty conscience and the desire not to disappoint my father or disgrace my family are still strong influences.

Again – my upbringing is why I don’t tolerate shoddy behavior toward or around ladies, even when ladies say they can

But woven throughout the presentations and discussions was the everpresent challenge of how to fund transportation.

Approximately 25 percent of North Carolina’s transportation funding comes from the federal government, largely through the Federal Highway Trust Fund.

The bulk of that money comes from the federal gasoline tax, currently at 18.4 cents per gallon, a rate hasn’t been changed in 23 years. In 1993, the year the rate was established, tuition at N.C. State University was

$1,500 per year. Last year it was $9,000. You know what has happened with costs in 23 years. Additionally, these revenues are static to declining.

And while we hope it is only temporary, the federal government shutdown has halted transportation funds going to states. A growing number have already pulled road construction projects. Fortunately, North Carolina is not in that condition – yet.

Our state also depends heavily on a state gas tax for funding, also facing revenue declines. Today’s vehicles are more fuel efficient and use less gas, there are growing numbers using electric or solar fuel that help little in offsetting costs of construction or maintenance, and the price of gas is dropping, meaning fewer total dollars are being collected. Meanwhile, the addition of 100,000 new residents each year adds

handle it. They shouldn’t have to do so. I am of the solid, Bible-based belief that it’s a man’s fault some guys are idiots, due to the failure of a father, somewhere along the line, even unto the seventh generation, as the verse says. If necessary any man should be ready, willing and able to help correct that fault. It doesn’t mean a woman is weak; it just means a man should do the right thing in the first case.

I like the concept of men encouraging other men to behave, but to package it as your own idea in order to sell razors is silly. And to attempt to paint all masculinity as toxic to produce a spineless generation of girlyboys won’t help. I find it amusing that the firm in question hasn’t yet apologized for its G-girls who wear blue leather-like jumpsuits at NASCAR events, and have the company’s name printed across their backsides.

I have the cynical view that the commercial was designed primarily to encourage women to pressure men into buying these particular products, in hopes of turning sometimes misguided men into some sort of neutered metrosexual housepet.

A watch company has come out with an outstanding response to the razor ad. Mayhap some other razor company will be willing to show fathers who do their best to raise young gentlemen, who by their behavior, their example or if necessary, their fists show other guys it’s not cool to be a jerk.

We need men willing to be fathers, husbands, friends and heroes – not politically correct drones who are taught they are inherently inferior to women.

A friend of mine suggested that rather than gelding young men with drugs and guilt, we should instead establish a finishing school of sorts for boys who, for some reason, cannot be reared by traditional means. Perhaps there is an absentee father and a mom doing her best to raise a boy on

her own. Perhaps there is a “traditional” family, but for some reason they have set aside the lessons that created generations who built this country and society, in favor of some milktoast version of something that the stylemakers have decided is fashionable and therefore, correct.

Chris suggested that this finishing school would include intensive classes on scripture; military history; selfrestraint and self defense; driving and auto maintenance; hunting, fishing, and preparing meat for consumption; subsistence farming; basic carpentry and home repairs; using and maintaining tools; leadership; grooming and dressing; philosophy and culture; literature and classic poetry; practical math and finance; civics; and other skills that are for some reason being forgotten or outlawed.

No matter how loud the pink-hatted protestors and professors scream, men and women were made differently, with different skills, to complement each other. We were designed to work hand in hand and side by side, either literally or figuratively. We each have different strengths and perspectives, because God knew and still knows what He was and is doing.

Men and women were designed to be different from each other – not better than the other, not supremely superior to one another, not subservient -- just different. When we recognize that, we’re all truly closer to being our best.

If my opinion “triggers” someone, or hurts feelings, I am truly sorry.

It wasn’t my intent.

Just blame it on being a man.

You, like the audience at the Transportation Summit, are probably getting a picture of a transportation system soon to be in crisis.

Gas taxes will likely always be a funding source, however supplemental funds are needed. Among the options are tolls, the mere mention of which raises the dander of most Tar Heels. No elected official who wishes to remain in office is willing to either raise the gas tax to levels needed to build and maintain our roads or to accept tolls.

But tolls are coming, likely through publicprivate partnerships that build optional “hot” lanes on multilane freeways.

Motorists can choose to escape congestion by paying a toll. Many favor a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) funding mechanism, but there are privacy issues for folks not wanting “big brother” to know where and how often they drive. Besides, nobody has perfected how to record each motorist’s annual usage or, more significantly, how to bill and collect the taxes from millions of resident motorists, much less visitors using our roads. Then there are dedicated sales taxes, yet another option that generally presents opposition.

North Carolina has 80,000 miles of statemaintained roads, the second largest network in the country. For the safety

of our people, the future economic development of our state and the need to efficiently transport people and goods from one place to another, we must find ways to maintain and expand this system. To do so requires adequate funding to help us travel to this future, regardless of which mode we choose.

Read a good psalm lately?

By Dr. Ray Mendenhall Contributing Writer Let Everything that breathes Praise the Lord, Alleluia! Psalm 150:6 I was sitting in a group of people some years ago, 25 to be exact, planning a special Educational Event for the Presbyterian churches in our region.

I was suggesting that we bring in, as a keynote speaker, a friend of mine who had built a significant following by advocating the singing and preaching of the psalms in the church.

One of the people on the planning team, a professor at a nearby seminary, said with some dismay and a bit of bravado, “nobody preaches the psalms anymore, they are just devotional material.� It was a common idea back then and persists to this day.

The great Psalms of the Judeo-Christian tradition have been relegated to the status of material solely for personal devotions.

It is a profound tragedy, for the Psalms have been in many times and many places at the heart of Jewish and Christian worship and music.

The great psalms were the hymnbook of the Temple in Jerusalem. Unfortunately we have lost the music and, to tell the truth, even if we had it now, it would probably be quite different from our music today; but we have the words These great words of worship which can enrich our prayer life in church and out. The psalms are model prayers. In the 150 psalms of the Bible, one

finds every human emotion expressed fron the highest exhilaration to the cruelest of thoughts (refer to psalm 137:9).

They express joy, sorrow, confession, contrition, undying faith, hope, the height of love, the breadth of grace. They praise God, creation, the king, the land, blessings and most of all the power presence and the providence of God. They are a literature rich in Theology and literally filled to the brim with faith.

It was a common thing in the Jewish tradition for the people to memorized the psalms from thweir youth. The Old Testament is shot through with references to the psalms. Jewish quoted psalms as well as Old testament scripture.

The last two Presbyterian books have made an effort to bring back psalms but it has not made much of a stir. The psalms seem lost on the contemporary church and its worship by and large.

The Anglican church still uses psalms here and there, but by in large the psalms are ignored. Which makes what Deitrich Bonhoeffer said of the psalms in the 1940s all the more interesting. In his small book The Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible he wrote, “Whenever the Psalter is abandoned, an incom-

parable treasure vanishes from the Christian Church. With its recovery will come unsuspected power.� p. 26 Eugene Peterson of our own age has said the the Psalms are our answers to God’s call. In the psalms, God has given us the words and way to answer His call faithfully.

So I ask you again, Have you read any good psalms lately, or better yet sung any? They are a great and neglected treasure of our faith and a major means to deepening and growing ones spiritual life.

Later as the Reformation made it way to Scotland, the Scottish church sang metrical psalms, psalm text set to metrical tunes.

An example would be “the Lord of Love My Shepherd is,� Psalm 23.

Years later, Isaac Watts developed the psalm paraphrase, a hymn based on a psalm text.

The most famousof these is perhaps, Joy to the World. Contrary to popular belief, Joy to the World is not a Christmas� song, it is a paraphrase of Psalm 98 by Watts.

The Presbyterian Hymnbook of 1955 was the last Presbyterian hymnbook to include psalms as responsive readings though some of the psalm paraphrases persisted in later books.

Lewis Franklin Dunn BURGAW -- Lewis Franklin Dunn died peacefully at Pender Skilled Nursing Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019.

95 years of age, he was born in northwest Mecklenburg County Dec. 1, 1923 to Robert Franklin Dunn and wife Sara Estelle Alexander. The youngest of seven children, he is preceded by his sister Mary Dunn Kearns and husband Tom of Pleasant Garden, and five brothers: Thomas Jefferson Dunn and wife Alice of Charlotte, Crosby Alexander Dunn and wife Thelma of Charlotte, Jackson Freeman Dunn and wife Nell of Sylva, Joseph Blevins Dunn and wife Sarah of Greensboro and Maurice Beaty Dunn and wife Phoebe of Charlotte.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 70 years Eleanor May Johnson Dunn of Charlotte, now living in Burgaw, and three children - David Franklin Dunn of Burgaw, Judy Lee Dunn Scroggs and husband John of Asheville and Robert Johnson Dunn and wife Melanie of Morganton, and three grandchildren: Melody Christine Dunn Jenkins and husband Jason of Raleigh, Eric Franklin Dunn of Raleigh and

Courtney Gail Dunn and husband Geoff King of Portland, Oregon.

D evo t e d n i e c e s a n d nephews are Heather Hice Davis and husband John of Pleasant Garden, Thomas and Sue Dunn of Bahama, N.C., Bobby and Priscilla Kear ns of Georgetown, S.C., and Susan Dermid of Wilmington among so many other relatives.

Known as Lew, he was a graduate of N.C. State University and an Elder Emeritus of Burgaw Presbyterian Church. Lew loved flying and had a Piper Cub before his service in the U.S. Army in WW II, rising to the rank of Staff Sargent. He was a member of EAA Chapter 297 based at Stag Air Park for many years and flew into AirVenture Oshkosh on two occasions with his nephew Andy Dunn, USAF Lt. Col. (retired).

Combining his love of flight with his woodworking skills, he helped build the Wright Brothers scale replica now on display at ILM Airport (Wilmington Int’l Airport).

Lew was a master gardener and loved raising and giving away his superb cantaloupes.

His professional career spanned teaching, dairy farming and public service. He was an Industrial Development Representative with the N.C. Dept of Commerce and specialized in food processing. This led to his appointment in 1969 as the first Executive Director of the North Carolina Fisheries Association, with headquarters in New

Obituaries Bern. Subsequent postings were as County Manager in Franklin County, and as Executive. Dir of the Pender County Economic Development Commission when he retired in 1988.

Lewis Dunn received recognition from numerous sources, starting with his designation as a Country Squire by Gov. W. Kerr Scott in 1952, and as Tar Heel of the Week in 1969.

In 1970 Gov. Robert W. Scott appointed him to the N.C. Marine Science Council.

He was a member of the Oyster Institute of America, the National Small Business Association and served as President of the ENC Economic Developers Association and Secretary of Pender Progress Corp.

Services will be held at Burgaw Presbyterian Church Thursday, January 24 at 2 p.m. Reverend Will Davis and Reverend Doctor Ray Mendenhall will officiate. Private burial will precede the service at Burgaw Cemetery with military honors accorded by the United States Army.

She was married to the late Rev. Bert Lawrence Wheeler and is the mother of Valerie Holmes (Lewis), Barbara Roberts, Steven Lawrence and Rodney Wheeler all of Georgia.

Sister-in-law of Lowell Wheeler and Alberta Robertson. Grandmother and Aunt to many.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2019 at Dunn Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Burgaw.

The funeral service will be noon Saturday, Jan. 27, 2019 at Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church.

Interment will follow in the Duplin Memorial Garden, Teachey.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at Union Missionary Baptist Church in the Deep Bottom Community of Wallace.

Burial followed at the Pickett Cemetery. The family received friends Friday, Jan. 18, 2019 from 6-8 p.m. at Union Missionary Baptist Church in the Deep Bottom Community.

Hazel was born Jan. 26, 1955 to the late James Albert “Buddy” Hall and May Elizabeth Brown Boney. She was reared by the late Mr. and Mrs. James Roosevelt and Lottie Farrior Brown of Deep Bottom.

She was united in holy matrimony to Ronnie Williams and this union was blessed with one child.

She later in life united in holy matrimony to Herbert Thomas and this union was blessed with three children.

American Legion Post 167 Valentines event

By Lori Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer American Legion Post 167 in Hampstead is planning its 2nd Annual Ladies and Gents Valentines Casino Night fundraiser.

The occasion is being offered to the public Feb. 9 in an effort to support our hometown veterans.

Tickets are available online in advance for $45 per person or can be purchased at the door for $50 each. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the event will last until 11 p.m.

Each ticket includes admission, hors d’oeuvres, beverages and $10,000 in chips. There will be gaming opportunities such as roulette, black jack, poker and craps.

A silent auction will also be held. Prizes will be given, including a barbeque grill, a 50-inch tv and an Amazon Echo with Fire Stick. The fundraising event will feature music by DJ Paul, food, soda, water, beer and wine.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans’ organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.

Known as the nation’s largest wartime veterans’ service organization, its members are committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring wholesome programs in our communities. The group promotes p at r i o t i s m a n d h onor, strong national security and continued devotion to fellow service members and veterans.

Hampstead’s AL Post 167 stays involved in a variety of activities to benefit the community. Among these are two American Legion baseball teams and annual sponsorships of participants in Boys State, a summer leadership and citizenship program for high school juniors. The group also provides partial nursing scholarships and seeks students to participate in the state oratorical competition.

The group invites anyone who has served during a time of conflict or is actively serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard to join them.

My dad bought me my first board, which was considered a ‘popout’, a store-bought board, a 9-foot Lancer, foam fiberglass.

“My mother and father lived in Carolina/Kure

Beach until Sunny Point took the land away. So, I was exposed to the Kure Beach Pier, riding surf mats at Kure Beach Pier, when I was three years old. My dad was riding surf mats when I was three years old. Surf mats were inflated, if you didn’t have a tee-shirt on it rubbed your chest raw.

“So I got a Lancer, and in the ‘60s, I was the only person going to Figure Eight.”

No playoffs for Pender Lady Pirates cruise to pair of conference wins

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Pender Patriot basketball team hosted the 4A Laney Buccaneers Dec. 7 in a nonconference game. During the contest, a scrum of sorts broke out and several Pender players left the bench area. Three Laney players also left the bench.

When order was restored, there were several players disqualified from the game. After the contest the North Carolina High School Athletic Association made their judgement – seven Patriots left the bench area and were to be suspended. In addition, both schools would be disqualified from post season play.

Pender High appealed the ruling and was notified last week that the appeal was denied, and the Pender High boys varsity basketball team would be ineligible for the playoffs. Although there were little if any punches thrown, pushing and shoving along with entering the court from the bench area constitutes fighting, according to the NCHSSA. “In the eyes of the state if you leave the bench you are fighting, “said Pender Athletic director Matt Davis. “It is very unfortunate for our coaches and kids. However, we will move on from this and hope our young men have learned a lesson from this.”

The Patriots are in the first year under Coach Ray Hankins. They are currently sitting atop the Coastal 8 Conference standings and was undefeated until losing at East Carteret on Friday.

Pender will make a run for the conference title and will also participate in the conference tournament before calling it a season.

Coach Davis hopes that the student-athletes understand the severity of their actions and will think twice before acting in the future.

“I hope this is a learning experience for them.

They need to understand that there are consequences for their actions. These are good kids that made a bad decision. We at Pender High expect more from our student-athletes. We are trying to set a high standard here and I hope that this resonates with them in the future. It is very disappointing for everyone involved.”

Topsail beats Ashley, North Brunswick

Methodical is defined in Roget’s Thesaurus as, “systematic, disciplined, precise, and orderly,” and all four definitions can be used to describe the efforts of the Topsail girls’ basketball last week as they raced to a pair of double-digit Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference victories.

While every coach loves that one superstar, the Lady Pirates make full use of the word, “team,” with any one of several girls able to score, rebound, and defend, and that balance prevents opponents from keying on one player, thus allowing the Topsail girls to “methodically” execute Coach Jay Kapiko’s offense and defense.

Julia Sullivan scored 12 points, pulled down nine rebounds, dished out four assists, blocked three shots, and came away with five steals, and Payton Little added 12 points, five boards, and three blocked shots as Topsail recorded a 50-38 road win over Ashley Friday in a game that was not nearly as close as the final score might indicate.

Topsail (13-4, 5-2) led 28-12 at halftime and carried a 41-20 advantage into the final period before the Ashley starters put up a 17-point fourth quarter as Kapiko cleared his bench – playing all 12 girls on the roster – for large portions of the third and fourth quarters.

It was a moment that every young basketball player dreams of. There is no time left on the clock and you step up to the free throw line with the score tied. You dribble once, dribble twice. The home crowd holds their breath. The gym is quiet. You shoot the basketball and it tickles the twine. The crowd goes wild and you are the hero for the night.

That is exactly what happened last week at Pender High School.

Super sophomore Khalil Marshall stepped up to the line with the clock showing zeroes and calmly drilled a free throw, giving the Patriots a 56-55 win over the Richland Wildcats.

It was obvious from the opening tip that this would be a close game.

Taylor resigns as Trask football coach Coaching a high school sport can be very demanding. Coaching a high school football team may be the most demanding of all sports. It takes an inordinate amount of time to run a successful football program and the burnout factor is high.

Sometimes a coach decides to get out before they reach that factor.

Last week Heide Trask High Schools most successful football coach ever decided that he needed to step back and take some time for himself and his family.

“Every year after the season I take time and pray about things. I have always said that if coaching began to feel like a job I would get out. I just don’t feel like I have that same feeling that I have had in years past, that excitement. If I don’t have that juice then I feel like it’s in the best interest of the school, the kids and myself to give it up, take a

have to learn to help them more in those type of situations.

“But I was pleased with the win.

I thought Payton played well inside and I thought Julia was Julia, and I thought Dashanique (Sidbury) played very well defensively and offensively, and I was really impressed how she too control of some situations.”

Along with Sullivan and Little, Sidbury added 11 points, four rebounds, and four steals, and Lauren Caveness had seven points, four assists, and three steals, and Madison Kita (four points) and Bella Kross (two points, four rebounds) came off the bench to contribute at both ends of the floor.

“Teams can’t simply game plan for one girl,” Kapiko said. “On any given night any one of our girls can get 12, we’ve only had one of two games where someone was in the 20s.

Most of the time we have 12, 14, and then there’s two or three girls with six or seven. It’s spread around.”

Tuesday the Lady Pirates were in cruise control as they raced to a 60-32 victory over visiting North Brunswick. Topsail controlled every aspect of the game, limiting the Lady Scorpions to single digits –seven, five, and seven – in the first, third, and fourth quarters, respectively.

By Bobby Norris and Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writers Last week all three Pender Count high school wrestling teams were in action. The Trask Titan grapplers participated in the Veterans Cup at Ashley High school while Topsail was at the Dan Varner Patriot duals.

Topsail headed to Carteret County last Saturday for the Dan Varner Patriot Duals and went 3-2, defeating East Carteret 65-15, Heritage 55-19, and Richlands 54-29, while falling to perennially-powerful Croatan 38-27 And host West Carteret 42-30. Devon Bell (160) and Ben Baker (113) each

went 5-0, while Ethan Rivenbark finished the day with a 4-1 record. All other Pirate wrestlers finished with 3-2 records. Josh Holmes (220), Jakob Mackleer (103), and Jeremy Crowell (152) recorded pins in the loss to West Carteret.

The Pirates wrestled conference foe Ashley early last week, falling to the Screaming Eagles 39-34. Alex Jones(195) recorded a pin as did Bell.

Daniel Diaz also earned a win by majority decision.

The Pirates celebrated Senior Night at home Tuesday in a MidEastern 3A/4A Conference dual meet with South Brunswick. They head to New Hanover Saturday for the conference individual championships.

Trask participated in the Veterans Cup last weekend. Rogan Heath finished first at 120 pounds while Elvis Lopez (113) and last weeks number one seed in the Post-Voice Top Eight Zion Cruse finished third at

170. Cruse ran into Laney’s Cael Willis in the semi-finals. Eric Lopez finished fourth at 126 pounds.

Pender’s Andrew Ocampo has begun his annual late season surge. He won the 113-pound weight class at the Cup Tourney.

All three high school wrestling teams will participate in their respective conference tournaments this Saturday. Trask and Pender will be at Trask while Topsail will be at New Hanover High school.

Titans falter late; fall to Dixon Trask drops two conference tilts

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Throughout the 201819 high school basketball season there has been one common denominator in the Heide Trask men’s season; poor shooting. The Titans play hard on both ends of the floor and do everything needed to win high school basketball games with the exception of one thing, that being of the utmost importance, putting the basketball in the hoop.

That problem reared its head last week when the Titans lost for the second time in less than a week to

Lejeune before falling at Dixon.

In the Lejeune contest the Titans had trouble finding their mark. The Devil Pups had beaten them badly in Rocky Point the week before and the Titans were determined to make amends. That didn’t happen with the Onslow County team taking a 60-48 win.

Henri Lambe led the Titans with eight points with junior Watson Orr chipping in seven. The Titans shot 37 percent from the floor including a onefor-nine performance from beyond the arc.

Next up was a Friday night affair with the Dixon Bulldogs. The Titans traveled to just beyond the Pender County line with

hopes of ending a fourgame losing streak. For just over three quarters of play it appeared that the proverbial monkey would be knocked off of the Titans back. However, a 24-11 fourth quarter run by the Bulldogs ended that hope.

Trask came out on point. They went to their strength of playing tough defense and running when given the opportunity. That translated into a 15-14 lead after one quarter of play.

The Rocky Point crew continued their inspired play in the second period and took a 29-26 lead into the break. The Titans were one half of basketball away from their first win since beating Hobbton Dec. 28.

looned to 11 points early in the third frame before the Bulldogs began to cut into the lead. An 18-15 Dixon advantage in the third period tied the score at 44 apiece going into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs continued to build on the third quarter run and outscored the Titans 24-11 in the final eight minutes to take the win.

Ivey Batts led the Titans with 13 points and eight rebounds while Will Berry chipped in 12. Watson Orr scored 10 points in the loss.

The Titans are now 5-11 overall and 1-6 in Coastal 8 play. They were at Croatan on Tuesday and at Southwest Onslow on Friday.

Pirates follow big win with loss to Ashley

That seems to be the word that best describes the Topsail boys’ basketball team, and at no time was it more evident than last week where the Pirates played really well in an outstanding come-from-behind home victory over West Brunswick, followed by one of their worst efforts of the 2018-19 season at Ashley.

Ashley senior Tai Freeman (21 points) and junior Mikai Stanley (20 points) combined for 11 of their team’s 16 first-period points as the Screaming Eagles (4-13, 3-4) raced out to a 9-2 lead that ended with a 16-7 first-period advantage, and the Pirates (8-8, 2-5) – despite a second-quarter stretch where their outscored their hosts 10-2 to close to within 18-17 with 2:58 left in the first half – never really responded.

Lady Patriots drop two Coastal 8 contests

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Coastal 8 Conference schedule has not been kind to the Pender Lady Patriots this season. with a 1-3 record going into last week, the Pats were looking to right the proverbial ship.

However, in the way was two of the top teams in the conference in the Richlands Wildcats and the East Carteret Lady Mariners. The Pats played the Lady Cats much better the second time around but came away on the wrong end of a 55-44 score early in the week. They ended the week being beaten by the Lady Mariners 68-30.

The Lady Patriots plan to go inside to Sonti Robinson early worked to perfection. The sophomore had her way with the Wildcat post players early. Robinson scored the Patriots first four points and Pender held an early lead. The Wildcats finished the first period with a 13-10 advantage.

Richlands opened the second period with a 5-0 run and held a 27-17 lead at the break.

Pender used a 10-1 run to open the third quarter and cut the lead to one. The Wildcats used a 7-4 run to take a 35-31 lead into the final eight minutes of play.

The Lady Patriots were close to beating a team

that had beaten them by 41 points only five days earlier. The Wildcats would not stand for that.

A 12-0 run by the Onslow County Cats gave the visitors a 47-31 lead. A late Patriot run trimmed the deficit to 10 points before the buzzer sounded ending the game.

Robinson led the Patriots with 10 points with Tyanna Holmes chipping in eight.

Next up was a ride to East Carteret. The Lady Mariners were boasting an 11-1 record with their only loss coming at the hands of the first place Croatan Lady Cougars. The Mariners had beaten the Lady Patriots by 19 at Pender early in the season. This game was no different as the Lady Pats were beaten 68-30.

The Lady Patriots are now 4-12 overall and 1-5 in Coastal 8 Conference play.

They hosted Southwest Onslow on Tuesday and Croatan on Friday.

consecutive shots at taking the lead, and possibly seizing the momentum, the Pirates went scoreless for the remainder of the half, watching almost passively as Ashley parlayed a 7-0 run into a 25-17 halftime lead.

That eight-point deficit would wind up being as close as Topsail would get the rest of the game as Ashley opened the second half with a 9-0 run that produced a 34-17 lead just 2:50 into the third quarter.

Freeman made sure the Pirates would get no closer than 12 (37-25) with seven third-quarter points, and

6-foot-2 Stanley dominated the lane and the boards with 12 of his 20 points over the final eight minutes of the game.

“The effort simply wasn’t there,” Topsail coach Jamie Rochelle said.

“It was definitely disappointing. I don’t know what it was, maybe they saw Ashley’s record and didn’t think they were that good. That’s something I warned them about, a record is not always an indicator of the talent.

In My Opinion What do you tell a group of high school student-athletes when the state of North Carolina decides that despite all of their hard work and dedication that because they made one mistake, they are deemed ineligible for the playoffs?

The Pender Patriot men’s basketball team was playing E.A. Laney a few weeks ago when what can only be described as a skirmish broke out. There were no punches thrown and the players initially involved were not ejected. However, there were several players disqualified for leaving the bench. The NCHSSA takes this type of behavior very seriously and very rarely if ever changes their minds.

That being said, the Pender Patriot men’s basketball team will be punished for this action, resulting in not being able to go the playoffs.

This is heartbreaking for the young men involved.

Pender is currently 6-1 in conference play.

They were undefeated before the ruling was upheld. They traveled to East Carteret and lost by three points. You can say what you want but I believe that the ruling

I have heard a lot of things since the ruling.

A lot of talk about who deserves what or why this happened. It happened. This can not be changed. Now it is the job of first year coach Rayford Hankins to put this in perspective and use it as a teaching tool.

Coach Hankins seems to have a very good relationship with his players. I also think he has a grip on the situation as a whole. It doesn’t matter how you look at it, this is not good for the players, the school or the athletic department as a whole. Athletic Director Matt Davis must wonder when it all will stop.

Hurricanes, flooding and now this. I guess he can look at it like this. What else can happen?

By Bob Willard Special to the Post & Voice Five weeks down with four to go, action getting much stiffer and more competitive as the the TBA season passes the half way mark in this years schedule.

This past week, in the junior division of TBA, the co-ed’s saw Hampstead Fence improve their record by out scoring Coury Science and Engineering 29-12.

Denise Anderson led the fence guys with 14 points.

Pierpan family Dentistry out shot Discovery Place Child Care 37-22. David Johnson was the big scorer for Pierpan. Renovation Church continued their successful season by taking it to TARC Logistics, 25-10.

Brooks Blosser and Brodie Dawson led the Renovation attack with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The third through fifth grade girls took over play.

Window World upended Dwyer Electric 21-15 behind the marksmanship of Nevaeh Brown and Francesca Cantone. Brooklyn Beatty hit for 14 markers in a losing cause, while The Kitchen Man squeeked out

a victory over RJ Miller Construction 14-10. Sydney Manning tallied 6 points to lead her Kitchen Man squad.

In the third-fourth grade boys division, AllKindsOfStuff.biz had a close call but prevailed by posting a 40-37 victory of a scrappy Coury Science and Engineering aggregation. Carter Sitorius and Kellan Coleman each chucked in 13 points for the win. Tye Coury matched the 13 point perfomance for the Engineers, but in a losing cause. In a burnburner, down to the wire contest, The Bagel Bakery eked out a 33-31 win over Finessee Pro Services.

Alexander Wolf hit the nets for 17 points for the Bakers, and Kyle Minguet popped in 14 points for Finessee. In the junior circuit finale, Isla Spa over Darden Agency 25-21 in a very well played contest. Cameron Creech hit for 11 counters to lead his Spa team to victory.

In the senior division of TBA, the high school boys started play early Saturday morning with Reliant Roofing topping Hwy 55 56-31 with two roster players hitting double digit scoring figures for the roofers.

VRBO #967800 posted a big win over Island Family Medicine 44-28. Ogden Tap Room prevailed over Sport Shots 54-41 behind a 29-point effort by Jacob Sydes. Ian Lister tapped in 25 points for Sport Shots.

The girls sixth through eighth grade took center stage with Cherubini Orthodontics outlasting Nunzio’s Pizza 47-41. Ryan Lambert served up 21 points for the Orthodontist, while Alexis Dawson tossed in a game high 28 points, but in a losing cause. Ronel Austin Coastal Realty kept up their winning ways by outlasting Coastal Fitness Center 2820. Lillian Austin led the Coastal Realty attack with 12 points.

The fifth-sixth grade boys took over play at 1 p.m. Hampstead Dental over White & Johnson Pediatric Dentistry 50-38. Jacob Edwards led all scorers by showing off his basketball talents and tickling the twines for 25 points to lead his team to victory. Tyler & Roth mastered a big win over TCL Marketing, 23-8.

Twins Halen and Ryder Willcox led the Executive Search attack with 8 and 9 points respectively. Dicks

Sporting Goods won over Breakaway Fitness and Performance 29-10 with a very even scoring attack spread throughout their 10 man roster, and in an oldfashioned thriller, North State Acceptance survived a double overtime nailbiter , winning 16-15 over ShipOnSite.

Finally the seventh and eighth grade boys started play at 5 p.m. RJ MIller & Construction scored 29 points to outlast Cape Fear Seafood Company 29-22.

Brewer Smith led the Construction guys in scoring, posting 12 points including a three-point heave. The Paint Store squeeked by a pesky Prism Painting squad 33-29. Austin Hobson tossed in 12 points for the losers, while Carlos Vazquez led his team with 17 markers.

And in the senior division finale for the day, Intercoastal Coolers eked out a narrow 44-42 win over a determined and well coached JT’S Brick Oven Pizza squad. Intercoastal showed well-balanced scoring amidst their team roster and Jackson Moore popped in 17 points for the Pizza makers, only in a losing cause.

The swim teams had a rare dual meet with Laney as the opponent, and the track teams, especially the girls, ran in a meet at Swansboro without several of their top-tier athletes. s3WIMMING Laney won both the boys’ and girls’ meet with the Buccaneer boys scoring 96 points to 74 for Topsail, and the Lady Buccaneers topping the Lady Pirates 111-53.

Taylor leaves a legacy at Trask High

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Although this space is reserved for student-athletes, there is sometimes an exception for this. This weeks Heide Trask athlete spotlight is dedicated to Johnathan Taylor.

Coach Taylor came to Trask and took over a program that had never had a winning season. His goals included changing the teams’ mindset to that of a winner. After the last three years, one can safely say that he reached his goal.

The Titans were 20-14 in his last three seasons as the Titans head man. The team finished in the top three in the conference standings in two of those years.

Hurricane Florence ravaged our county. Coach Taylor helped keep these young men grounded and offered a helping hand when needed.

Coach Taylor’s legacy at Heide Trask High school will never be forgotten.

(35-7) in the shot put. Senior Kosmas Fertittaboutis was second (33-7) in the triple jump and fourth (16-3-1/2) in the long jump, and senior Cameron Barras was second (19-7) in the long jump, fifth (1:23.30) in the 500-meter run, and tied for seventh (6:80) in the 55meter dash.

Oher individual scorers were juniors Brendan Parrella and Brandon Hayes and senior Eddie Rooke, who finished fourth (5:11.50), fifth (5:12.00), and sixth (5:45.00), respectively, in the 1,600-meter run, and junior Ian Webster with a third (17-11) in the long jump.

The 4x200-meter relay was second (1:37.90), as was the 4x800-meter relay (9:33.00).

Also, sophomore Arianna Blevins was fourth (30-4) in the shot put, fifth (49.10) in the 300-meter dash, and fifth (13-5) in the long jump.

Junior Alycia Artman had a second (30-7-1/2) in the shot put, sophomore Kayla Garcia was fourth (4:25.30) in the 1,600-meter run, freshman Breanna Fabbrie was fourth (1;36.40) in the 500-meter dash, sophomores Emma Mar tin (four th; 11:20), Emma Huff (fifth; 11.50), and Rini Hermawan (sixth; 13.06) all placed in the 50meter hurdles.

Often times that player develops some confidence and becomes a player to watch. Over at Topsail High School there is a player on the men’s varsity basketball team that fits that bill.

Junior James Stuart has gotten better in each and every game that he has played in. He has reached double figures in four of the last five games that he has played in. Last week he scored 16 points and ripped down 11 rebounds in the Pirates comeback win over Mid-eastern Conference 3A foe North Brunswick.

The Pirates play in a very tough 4A-3A conference.

They will need the 6-1 Stuart if they are to make a run to the 3A state playoffs. James Stuart is becoming a player for the Pirates.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Pender Lady Patriot basketball team has an abundance of players suited for playing on the perimeter.

But they have very few that want to go inside and mix it up.

One player that has shown the ability to play inside is sophomore Sonti Robinson.

Miss Robinson has the size and strength to battle inside. She can rebound with the big girls and is also capable of filling the lane on the break.

Last week the Lady Patriots hosted the Richlands Wildcats. The Cat’s had beaten the Pats by 41 points five days earlier. This time with Sonti battling inside, the game was much closer.

Robinson was able to push the Wildcats inside and was very good on the boards.

With two more years at Pender, Sonti Robinson is sure to get better and better.

As comebacks go, Tuesday home game against North Brunswick was a classic if you were rooting for the team in black-andgold. The Scorpions seized the lead at 20-18 with 5:40 remaining in the first half, and extended it to 33-25 at halftime thanks to a 15-t second-quarter finishing run.

before Long (27 points, six three-pointers, three steals) and Stuart (16 points, 11 rebounds) combine for 18 of the Pirates’ 25 third-period points as they converted the eight-point halftime deficit into a 50-41 lead entering the final eight minutes of the game.

A 10-2 run tied the score at 35-35 before Andrews broke the tie with a twopoint basket. Stuart scored the next six Pirate points before Sullivan (seven points, 11 boards) scored the 49th-and 50th points.

The Pirate defense helped the cause by holding

the Scorpions to just eight points in the quarter. North Brunswick committed 17 turnovers – 10 of the coming in the second half.

“In the beginning of the game we were playing well, then it suddenly went downhill,” Rochelle said.

“In the second half they responded and did what they needed to do, they responded to our halftime pep talk, or whatever you want to call it.

“I was rethinking some of the games and realized each of the five guys that started tonight was a leading scorer in at least one of

game-high 15 points in the second quarter to keep her team relatively close.

Kita and Destiny Idol (four points, three bounds, steal) helped Topsail finish out the win with a 14-7 disparity in scoring over the final eight minutes.

Kross had five points off the bench, while Sidbury had six points, seven rebounds, and four steals.

“It’s important for the girls who come off the bench to contribute in the event of foul trouble or injury, and we are fortunate to have girls who can do

that,” Kita said. “I mean, like everybody else I would like to start at some point but, as far as coming off the bench, after the game gets started I think it gives me a look at what the other team is doing, what plays they are running and what kind of defense they have, and who goes where.

“We went 4-0 so f ar against the 3A schools so it’s really important for us to go to New Hanover next week and continue the momentum, go in with the same mentally. We have a big game Friday, too, with

Hoggard, and beating them would definitely help us with the playoffs.

Topsail travels to New Hanover Tuesday, then returns home for a rematch with the Lady Vikingsa team they have never beaten.

“We’re excited about every game but it’s a big week, especially on the road,” Kapiko said. “We are facing a good squad at New Hanover, and everyone is aware of our lack of success against Hoggard.”

terback and senior leader Tyrease Armstrong in the first game of the year to injury. Despite the record, the Titans were left out of the state playoffs.

Last year was Taylors toughest by his own admission. A late transfer along with Hurricane Florence proved to be the team’s toughest opponent.

“With the things that hap-

pened before the season started and the storm along with some family issues, it was by far the toughest year. You know we played a football game on every day of the week other than Sunday last year? We finished the year 5-6 but we were in almost every game. I think I was probably the proudest of these guys than any team that I have coached.”

“All the coaches gave us a real pep talk at the half, they talked about heart and skill, and all that, and I thought we came out strong to start the second half,” Long said. “I believe that

we started looking for everybody, making better passes, and taking better shots.

“The guys got me the ball and gave me open looks, and I was able to knock some shots down. As soon as I made the first one (three) I knew it was going to be a good night.”

It was 57-46 with 5:30 to go, 68-52 as the clock wound down to 2:54, and 73-54 with 40.3 ticks left.

The Pirates went on the road Tuesday for a rematch with New Hanover before heading home Friday to take on Hoggard.

The Mariners took advantage of what may have been a letdown, beating the Patriots 50-47.

Pender led at the end of the first period and took a 26-23 lead into the second half. They were outscored 27-21 in the final 16 minutes of play.

The Patriots are now 10-7 overall and 6-1 in Coastal 8 Conference play.

They hosted Southwest Onslow on Tuesday and Croatan on Friday.

The Pats were one day removed from finding out that they would be disqualified from participating in the 1A state playoffs Coach Taylor will remain at Trask for the remainder of the year and then weigh his options. No matter what happens in the future he said will always look at his time coaching the Titans with fondness.
