PCU staff will re-evaluate our water shortage response at that time to determine if changes can be made. “We appreciate the cooperation of our customers with these requirements, said Keel. “Thank you for your eff Water restrictions remain in place in EASTERN 0ENDER AFTER RECORD -EMORIAL Day water usage caused a pressure drop and some empty faucets across the area. Dry weather prompted many customers to turn on the yard sprinklers, resulting in a drastic increase in water usage – more than the system could handle.

Enjoy fireworks safely From Staff Reports Fireworks caused 35 wildfires last year during the Independence Day weekend, according to the N.C. Forest Service. That number could rise this year, since abnormally dry conditions are dominating the weather in southeastern North Carolina. The N.C. Forest Service officials are urging extreme caution with fireworks and to celebrate safely. While a burning ban for the area has been lifted, the fire danger is still prevalent throughout the region. Forecast chances for rain in Pender County are slight at best and are unlikely in the southeastern counties for the next several days where warm
temperatures will continue to raise the risk of wildfires. Even small fireworks such as sparklers, fountains, glow worms, smoke devices, trick noisemakers and other Class C fireworks can be hazardous. For example, sparklers burn at temperatures above 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. “Glow worms burn directly on the ground near ignition sources. Wildfires caused by fireworks can be prosecuted under the forest protection laws of North Carolina and individuals may be subject to reimbursing the costs for fire suppression. If you choose to display your own fireworks, here are some safety tips to follow: s$ON T USE lREWORKS SUCH
as ground spinners, firecrackers, round spinners, Roman candles, bottle rockets and mortars, which are illegal in North Carolina. s$O NOT USE lREWORKS NEAR dry vegetation or any combustible material. s$ON T AIM FIREWORKS AT trees, bushes or hedges where dry leaves may ignite. s-AKE SURE lREWORKS ARE always used with adult supervision. s&OLLOW INSTRUCTIONS PROvided with fireworks. s$O NOT USE lREWORKS WHILE under the influence of alcohol. s(AVE A RAKE OR SHOVEL AND a water source nearby.
Rocky Point and Burgaw ďŹ reďŹ ghters (below) battle a blaze June 27 that engulfed a detached garage at a home and threatened the residence. The blaze caught the wooded area behind the home on ďŹ re, prompting the N.C. Forest Service to plow a ďŹ re line around the ďŹ re to contain it. The garage was destroyed, but the home was saved.
