carefully. Early voters can cast ballots at any polling location in Pender County – early voting in a particular precinct is not necessary. Computers at each polling location are connected through the Internet to the county elections office. Each location shares the same voter information. “You can’t vote here at the elections office and then go down the road to another location and vote again. We would know about that, Boyles said. “We are averaging about seven to 10 minutes a voter. Voters casting ballots on Election Day Nov. 8 will need to vote in their assigned precinct. Early voting will continue through Saturday Nov. 5 at 1p.m.

Pender County Emergency Management is moving from the hur ricane emergency phase into storm recovery and clean up. Pender County Emergency Manager Tom Collins says only one family remains in the emergency shelter as of Monday. He hopes that family will be able to move to temporary shelter Monday or Tuesday and the county can officially close the shelter. “Hopefully by today (Monday) FEMA will have a place for them to stay. We have everyone else into housing except one family, Collins said. “Once we place them, we can close shelter operations. FEMA has been finding people places to live until they get their house back. Some people displaced by the flood won’t be returning to their homes. “Some won’t go back, unfortunately. They will either sell or just won’t fix it back, said Collins. Collins says all roads in the county are open, except one road near the Black River near Canetuck Road. Debris pickup The Pender County EM announced county-wide storm debris pick-up is underway this week.

“Residents with vegetative debris should leave leaves, branches, and tree limbs on the edge of the state right-ofway, said Collins. “Please do not pile any debris under power lines or in a location that blocks vision of roadways. Collins said the debris clean-up is going to take time and he urged residents to be patient. “For neighborhoods with vegetative debris, especially in Hampstead and the eastern portion of the county, pick-up should begin the week of Oct. 24, said Collins. “We apologize for the delay but we still have serious flooding issues in the county. Debris should to be placed in a pile along the edge of the state right-of-way. “There will only be one

Burgaw was haunted Saturday night. It was a howling good time. The Gray Lady who walks in the mist along Topsail Island, Patriots from Moores Creek National Battlefield, widows of the sea, Benjamin Gould, and a Gullah Geechee ax murder were among the ghost stories shared. More than 420 ghost walkers attended the first ever Ghost Walk: Ghosts of Pender’s Past. They came from as far as Burnsville, Rocky Mount, Raleigh, Wilmington, New Bern, Jacksonville, and Myrtle Beach, SC. The idea of a Ghost Walk started in the Pender County Tourism office. We’re located in the renovated historic jail and we hear the sound of chairs dragging. We hear doors open and footsteps follow – but no one is present. As we shared this with co-workers,

they in turn responded with their own ghost stories. The county courthouse has had its share of visitors, we’ve been told. We decided: we need to have a ghost

walk. We’re a government agency, an office of two, and we knew we could not pull

produced a 20 percent reduction in water usage – enough to keep the county out of a water emergency as repairs on the pipe have reduced flow to the three county systems. Pender Utilities Director Michael Mack says despite the reduced availability of raw water into the county’s

treatment plant, water conservation has kept the system running without the need to use emergency water from Wallace. Settling of a 48-inch pipe that delivers raw water to the three county systems opened a football-sized hole that has prompted a reduction in the

flow of raw water to the plants and forced conservation measures. The break in the pipe has cut the water flow nearly in half. “Conservation has been very effective. We have seen at least 20 percent reduction.
