Residents along Black River evacuated; flooding worse than Hurricane Floyd

Inland Pender County hit hard by Matthew By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher Usually hurricanes skirting the coast do the most damage along the beach, but not Hurricane Matthew. The most damage from the Oct. 7-9 storm was felt inland, with longer periods of sustained wind and much heavier rain. Pender Emergency Management officials are expecting historic flooding along the Black

River – flooding that will rival the legendary Hurricane Floyd in 1999. The Northeast Cape Fear River, which will rise well past flood stage, is expected to crest at just under 16 feet. Hurricane Floyd hit 22 feet on the Northeast Cape Fear. Heavy rain from the hurricane that fell in Cumberland and Sampson counties drains into the Black River, and that area had already experienced much rain prior to Matthew, which

had the level on the Black River rising prior to Matthew. Pender County received between six and nine inches of rain, with some inland counties receiving nearly 15 inches. Wind gusts were recorded at 74 miles per hour in the county. Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins says the county weathered the storm well. “We have some debris issues. We had people

in the shelters. We are having all the usual issues with this type of storm, Collins said. “We had a total of 14 people in the Burgaw shelter and 39 in Topsail. Power outages were widespread across the county, with most power restored by Tuesday. Much was restored by Sunday evening. Collins says the real impact of the storm is

Maple Hill parade, fest cancelled Staff photo by Andy Pettigrew

Crews worked Sunday morning to remove trees down on the Courthouse Square in Burgaw after Hurricane Matthew. The gazebo on the square sustained minor damage, but no other damage was reported.

Officials in Pender coastal towns were very concerned as Hurricane Matthew took aim at the Pender County shoreline. But when it was over, coastal areas saw less damage severe weather than inland portions of the county. “We were very blessed, said Surf City Mayor Zander Guy. “It could have been a lot worse when you think about the people in Hati and Cuba. The beach in Surf City sustained heavy erosion, losing nine to 12 feet of elevation and the dune was breached in several places along the 1400 and 2000 blocks of Northshore Drive along with some flooding. “Saturday night when the wind switched to offshore, it blew sand back on the beach. I think we may have gotten some sand back that way, said Guy. “Obviously when you are along the coast and you get four to 10 inches of rain, you are going to have some flooding. Guy credited work done by the town and the N.C. DOT to mitigate flooding problems

Due to the extensive flooding from Hurricane Matthew, the annual Maple Hill parade and festival scheduled for Oct. 15 has been cancelled. There is no word yet on if the event will be rescheduled.

Holly Shelter Shooting Range opening postponed

The Holly Shelter Shooting Range ribbon cutting scheduled for Oct. 14 has been postponed. The ribbon cutting event will be rescheduled, and updated information will be provided at a later date. The event was postponed due to Northeast Cape Fear flooding along Shaw Highway from Hurricane Matthew.

Hurricane Matthew left its mark on Poplar Grove Plantation, where it claimed four of the historic site’s prominent oaks. Three of the trees stood proudly on the front section of the property, providing shade and shelter for farmers’ market visitors each week. The fourth tree was one of two prime wedding ceremony settings on the back lawn. It will long be remembered as the site where numerous couples shared their vows. Wedding Director Chrissy Fennell spent much of the day calling future brides to impart the sad news. Some of the couples will choose another tree for their ceremonies, and others will opt for the gazebo. “We have had a lot of beautiful ceremonies under that tree, said Fennell. “It’s heartbreaking, but we still have a lot of other beautiful trees on the property. This weekend, two weddings were

supposed to be held there. I’ve called the brides for this year’s weddings, for next year and for 2018. They’re sad, and I’m sad. When I walked onto the property, I cried. It’s a beautiful tree, and it has lived a long life. Prior to Hurricane Matthew’s appearance, Poplar Grove Executive Director Caroline Lewis was aware that some of the trees on the property were not thriving, and she had consulted Connolly Tree Preservation in Push Mowers Wilmington about possible conservation efforts. “They had come out and given us a quick overview of some of the trees, so we could find out which ones we could possibly save. We knew there were some trees that were not thriving, and they had earmarked three of them at the front of the property where the farmers’ market is. We had lost one oak next to this one because of disease, and we were going to try to
