There will be three additional budget meetings before the final budget is voted on by the end of June.

Burgaw family hit with 218 percent rate from lender N.C. Attorney General bans car title lender from state From Staff Reports A Burgaw family facing foreclosure on their home turned to an online car title lender for a loan. The loan of $2,900 was supposedly at 18 percent with a final balloon payment of $531. Months later, after repeatedly requesting a copy of the loan agreement, they learned their loan actually came with an interest rate of 218 percent and a final payment of $3,531.

When they complained, the defendants threatened that they knew where the family lived and would come take their car. The family had to move their car to keep it safe.

The online car title lender that charged outrageous interest rates and took consumers’ cars with little or no warning is now banned from making loans in North Carolina, Attorney General Roy Cooper said Monday.

“Families who need a little extra money to deal with an illness or a layoff deserve a fair loan, not a rip off,” Cooper said. “North Carolina has long made illegal these expensive loans with excessive interest rates, and my office is here to enforce the law for consumers.”

The Pender County Board of Commissioners reviewed the proposed 2016-2017 budget from County Manager Randell Woodruff at the May 2 commissioners meeting.

“We’ve done very well of living within our means,” said Woodruff. “Our tax rate of .685 can remain the same and there won’t be any increases to the Solid Waste Fee, Fire or EMS taxes. I foresee no changes in the level of services Pender County will provide to the public.”

With a total budget of $55.4 million, Woodruf f anticipates spending approximately $347,000 less than the prior fiscal year. He projected continued sales tax growth, and had not included a potential savings from the county using a new health insurance plan.

Pender County Schools would receive an increased appropriation of $1.25 million, Cape Fear Community College campuses would receive a total of $722,000 and several new positions in the Sheriff ’s department are proposed to provide security at the Pender County Courthouse.

There is also a 1.5 percent cost of living wage increase for county employees, and a potential new position created for an Assistant County Manager, and the immediate need of an upgraded software system for the tax office.

Continued from page 1A Cooper filed suit last week against the lender, which does business as Autoloans, Car Loan, Sovereign Lending Solutions and Title Loan America, for charging North Carolina consumers average interest rates of 257 percent on loans of $1,000 to $2,500.

Title loans are small dollar loans secured by consumers’ car titles. State law caps interest rates on such loans at 30 percent for licensed lenders and at 16 percent for unlicensed lenders, such as the defendants.

Under an order signed by Wake County Superior Court Judge Donald W. Stephens, while the lawsuit is underway the company and its owners are barred from: making or collecting on loans in North Carolina; repossessing, selling or placing liens on any car owned by a North Carolina consumer; destroying records; and spending or transferring any money.

Cooper is seeking a permanent ban on the defendants’ illegal lending business, cancellation of previous loans and liens, and refunds for North Carolina consumers.

According to the Attorney General’s investigation, the title lender has operated since 2012 under various names and appears to be based in Florida, although to evade lending laws the business incorporated in the Cook Islands, New Zealand and previously claimed affiliation with a Native American tribe in Michigan. As alleged in the complaint filed with the court, at least 700 North Carolina consumers took out title loans from the defendants.

In addition to charging sky-high annual interest rates of 161 percent to 575 percent, most of the loans included payments on interest only for

the first 11 months and a final balloon payment larger than the original loan amount.

This came as a shock to many borrowers because the lender often misstated interest rates, withheld details of the loan, and failed to give consumers a copy of their written loan agreement.

The lawsuit contends that when consumers couldn’t make the onerous payments, the defendants repossessed their cars illegally. The lender sent borrowers a GPS tracker to install on their cars and placed a lien on their car titles.

If a consumer paid late or missed a payment, the defendants used the GPS tracker to find and repossess the consumer’s car. Consumer affidavits filed with the lawsuit show the impact of the illegal lending scheme: A Garner man borrowed $1,250 from the defendants after his in-laws became ill and needed to move in with him.

He paid more than $4,000 on the loan but was told he owed nearly $4,500 more. He asked for an extension because he didn’t want to lose his car, but the defendants still towed it and sold it.

The Attorney General’s Office has mailed letters to consumers who took out loans from the defendants to make them aware that the defendants cannot collect payments or repossess cars under the current court order. The office has also written towing companies and automobile auction houses that have previously done business with the defendants to notify them about the court’s order.

A total of eight consumers have complained to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division about the defendants’ unfair loans to date. To file a consumer complaint, call 1-877-5-NO-SCAM toll-free within state or use the online complaint form at ncdoj.gov.

Hampstead church honors local law enforcement

By Lork Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer Hampstead Baptist Church recently honored local law enforcement agencies during a special service at the church.

Program Chair man Bobby Todd set out to recognize the officers in an effort to bring awareness to the ongoing dangerous situations encountered by public servants on a daily basis.

Par ticipants that were honored include: the Pender County Sheriff Department, Surf City Police Department, Topsail Beach Police Department, N.C. Fisheries, N.C. Wildlife Commission and the N.C. Highway Patrol. The event was open to the public and free of charge.

Pastor Joey Canady opened the program with a prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and patriotic music.

NC Rep. Chris Millis spoke about how laws are created and presented certificates of acknowledgement and gratitude to each law enforcement agency for serving the citizens faithfully, upholding their oaths and enforcing the laws for the benefit of the people.

Hampstead Baptist Church also presented each of the agencies with plaques of appreciation. Senator Bill Rabon attended the event, as well.

Joann Garner, wife of a retired police officer who was injured on the job, shared her thoughts on the daily struggles of officers and their families. Hippie Kaiser said a closing prayer, and the program dismissed to the fellowship hall for refreshments.

Program Chairman Bobby Todd has held similar events in New Hanover County in the past.

“About 20 years ago, I did this for the Optimist Club in New Hanover County. It was easy back then. You didn’t have all this killing and shooting of police officers. Now about half of what you read and see on tv is about an officer getting into trouble. I thought to myself, ‘We need to do something about this.’ So I talked to the pastor, and he thought it was a great idea to put on a program of recognition for the officers in our coastal area of Pender County. It was a big success.

Most of the law enforcement agencies have already called me and thanked me for it.

I think it meant a lot to the folks,” said Todd.

The lease for the equipment, which includes the phone system throughout the county, runs for five years at a total cost of $1.5 million dollars.

Harvey explained to the Board that the county did not have a fire protection system in place to protect the county data centers and recommended that the county approve a purchase order to BFPE in the amount of $25,000 to install a fire suppression system to protect “the most critical system the county needs to operate on a daily basis.”

She works in the Estates/Special Proceedings division, but she has also worked in other divisions within the Clerk’s Office. Officer Petersen and K-9 Kayda received special recognition for actions taken during a situation that occurred while the officer was off duty. Lt. P. Voorhees of the Surf City Police Dept. wrote a description of the occurrence in a letter to Todd.

In the letter, Voorhees explained that Petersen had received a request for K-9 assistance from the Holly Ridge Police Dept. A vehicle had been found with a large pool of blood in the driver’s seat, with a trail of blood leading to a wooded area. Efforts to locate the driver had failed when Petersen arrived minutes later and gave Kayda the “track” command.

The K-9 picked up the scent of the subject and located him within three minutes.

The male was semi-conscious and still holding a box-cutter style knife, while bleeding profusely from a self-inflicted wound to the wrist area. Petersen promptly disarmed the subject, rendered first aid and summoned Onslow County EMS. “Officer Petersen’s dedication to duty, quick response, countless hours of training and expert K-9 handling skills enabled him and his K-9 partner Kayda to locate a gravely wounded subject. If not for the efforts of Petersen and K-9 Kayda, the subject would have surely succumbed to his wounds and perished. The actions of this law enforcement and K-9 team not only reflect positively upon Petersen and K-9 Kayda, but also upon the Surf City Police Department and law enforcement as a whole. “Sprinklers are not approved for data centers, they would do more damage. Our footprint is small and all the permits and training are included in the price. We would not be able to function for quite a while after a fire as we are, so this is necessary.”

Pirates Promise DWI event at THS May 11

Topsail High School will present Pirates Promise, a DWI Awareness and Prevention program aimed at prom goers from the high school May 11.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will bring in the Breath Alcohol Testing Unit (BAT) Mobile, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol will be setting up a cone course for students to navigate in a golf cart while wearing a set of “drunk goggles” that simulate impaired driving.

The Holly Spring Police Department will be bringing in a simulator in an actual car for students to experience.

The BAT Mobile will showcase how law enforcement is equipped to set up DWI checkpoints in North Carolina.

Amanda Barbee, RN, Health Educator for Pender County coordinated Pirates Promise as part of ongoing health initiatives supported the Healthy Communities Grant Program.

“Pender and Heide Trask High Schools through Pender Emergency Management had crash reenactment programs to focus

on DWI awareness. I had contacted school resource officer for input on this special program. Because Topsail High School has such a large student population it was recommended that I hold this particular program there,” Said Barbee.

“Instead of just pulling up the bus we want students to experience the consequences of poor choices, these are young adults that think they are participating in adult activities, dressing up, going out to dinner, driving with friends away from parents on prom night. What they need to realize is these choices often result in adult consequences or can be deadly.”

The program begins at 12:30 p.m. and will have more than 300 participants, all of whom have purchased prom tickets.

“Prevention awareness should go much further then just prom night,” Barbee said.

“Ideally the day after prom will be a quiet one with zero tragedies the night before. We want you to make it to college.”

Don’t panic – plan and prepare As new forecasts for the Atlantic hurricane season are published, it looks like this might be a slightly busier year than originally anticipated. That doesn’t necessarily mean a thing for Southeastern North Carolina, but it does mean you need to be prepared.

Make arrangements for your pets before the wind starts rising; some shelters do not allow pets, and your home could be inaccessible for days after a storm. Make sure your furry family members have sufficient shelter, food and water in case you are kept from your home for some time.

Keep your vehicles as full of fuel as possible during the storm season. Always make sure, as a storm approaches, that you have sufficient cash for the days ahead. When electricity goes out, ATMs and banks are shut down, too.

Speaking of electronics—remember that without power and wireless service, digital documents are useless. Have paper backups, in a waterproof, safe container, of all your important policies, ownership documents, etc. Keep this in your evacuation kit.

If you use a generator, have it checked out by a professional now, rather than as the storm threatens the coast. Replace worn lines and connections, clean out the leftover wasp nests from last year, and be sure your generator can provide the power you need (which is generally far less than most of us want).

Do you know the route to your “safe place?” Drive it a few times. Experts even suggest noting areas where trees or infrastructure like signs would be most likely to be damaged, so you have no surprises when you leave for higher ground.

There is a justifiably heightened sense of fear when a storm threatens our coast but between local emergency manage offices and governments, plans are in place to protect lives and property. That doesn’t mean we can kick back and enjoy a hurricane party. Each individual property owner and family has the responsibility to be ready on their own end when the skies turn dark and a big storm finally comes this way. Just a little planning now can save a lot of heartache later.

Bill Messer Charles Davis and Sean Franklin told me how their restaurant careers started at a longtime Wrightsville Beach favorite, Middle of the Island Restaurant, known to locals as MOI, washing dishes, and cooking. They have their own restaurants now, and Sawmill Grill operations now include two locations, and a thriving catering business.

“Where are you going with this? Any future plans?”

I asked.

Charles answered, “Right now, the expanding part is the catering business. It’s growing by leaps and bounds.

We have a pig cooker, we have fryers I can put in the back of my truck and carry with me, we have a full service mobile kitchen out there, a couple of temperature controlled catering trucks.”

“How are the margins?”

I asked, the thin layer of left-over money, profit, after expenses.

“Margins are tight,” Sean said, and Charles explained, “There’s food cost and labor.”

Charles amplified their philosophy, “We always thought if you provide a good wholesome meal, a good quality product at a reasonable price, they’re gonna’ show up and come here. We try to make it so that it’s cheaper to come here and eat with us

Resting on the Seventh Day Whether the timing was coincidental or providential, the timing was perfect.

Brother Kincey was reading a passage from the book of Joshua, and just as he spoke the words, “And the Lord said,” the thunder rumbled.

I knew then and there that my plans for the afternoon were likely wrecked; my Sunday afternoon was to have been a busy one, but in reality, only one of the tasks was so critical that another day wouldn’t be just as good.

True, the things needed to get done, and true, I like starting each week with a clean slate, but the rain falls the same on rich and poor, just and evil, industrious and slothful.

Too much Sunday lunch, and too much Saturday ambition, left several joints and muscle groups reminding me that I am no longer 25 and bullet-proof, but rather 50 and just barely bullet-resistant. Since I am rather stubborn about taking anything stronger than plain aspirin – some medical professionals would say phobic, and I wouldn’t call that an exaggeration -- I hadn’t slept well the night before. Between pouring rain and pounding, painful proof of overdoing everything, I opted for a more passive form of productivity, namely, a Sunday nap.

I do not coop well, as the country saying goes; I prefer to be outside as much as pos-

Jefferson Weaver sible. The need to be doing something, almost anything, is excruciating by the weekends, since I’ve been trapped in my little beige corner for several days. By evening time, I’m usually a semi-zombie whose greatest accomplishments are to finish the evening chores, eat supper with utensils, and not kick the dog without reason. That is, on the evenings I’m not still working as the sun drops behind the pines, the geese hurry home, and the horses wait for their evening tribute.

It’s counter-productive for me to take a nap during the evening, since I’m most likely to slide from rest into repose, thence into rapideye movement sleep, only to awaken at 3 a.m. I am blessed to be able to function

very well, usually, on six and a half to seven hours of sleep at night, but that’s generally all my body will allow before something kicks in and I have to get something done, or bust.

I was never a good child at naptime in kindergarten and primary school; I see now that my rebellion against legally-sanctioned sleep was amongst the worst errors of my youth, and possibly will be a black mark against me when I someday stand before God’s throne.

As I have gotten a bit older, I also realize, as did Mark Twain, how brilliant my father actually was.

When he got home in the afternoon (if he got in before supper) he would generally take a nap. His youngest child, on the other hand, wanted Papa to “do something.” I thought Papa was wastin’ precious time. There were balls to throw, kites to fly, a big yard to explore. The Old Man often did relinquish his brief pre-supper rest for a few minutes with me, a sacrifice I now realize was indeed a sign of his true love.

Although my need for sleep is distressingly mathematical, I still have the ability, when time allows, to nap almost anywhere. In a letter to the Old Man (written from the battlefield, before Papa could read), my grand-

My wife and I recently downsized to a retirement community, and somewhere in the move we lost our Social Security and Medicare cards, birth certificates, marriage license and passports.

Worried Ron Dear Ron, Replacing important documents that are lost, stolen or damaged is pretty easy if you know where to turn. Here are the replacement resources for each document you mentioned, along with some tips to protect you from identity theft, which can happen if your documents end up in the wrong hands. s"IRTH CERTIlCATE If you were born in the United States, contact the vital records office in the state where you were born (see cdc.gov/nchs/w2w. htm for contact information).

This office will give you specific instructions on what you need to do to order a certified copy and what it will cost you.

Birth certificate fees range between $9 and $30. s3OCIAL 3ECURITY CARD You can replace a lost or stolen Social Security card for free, and if you live in the District of Columbia, Michigan, Nebraska, Washington or Wisconsin, you can do it online at ssa.gov/ssnumber.

If, however, you live outside these areas, you’ll need to fill out Form SS-5 (see ssa. gov/forms/ss-5.pdf to print a copy) and take it in or mail it to your nearby Social Security office, along with your U.S. driver’s license, or a state-

You also need to be aware that losing your Social Security card puts you at risk for identity theft. By losing your Medicare card, you also need to watch out for Medicare fraud. Incompatible The old adage “opposites attract” may hold some truth, but what if a couple is scientifically incompatible? During my early college years, I was required to take the Myers Briggs Personality Inventory, a series of indicators which provide insight into attitudes, perceptions and preferences.

The responses to a series of ranked questions formulate a composite representation of sixteen personality types which explain our approaches to relationships, work and personal growth.

Although the official Myers Briggs tests are carried out in formal settings, online versions are easy to access, free and relatively accurate.

However, I felt as if the results might serve as a portal to the darker reaches of my psyche where dormant truths might be unearthed. I envisioned my professor marking a large red “X” on my permanent college file as he discovered a new personality composite akin to a mental Pandora’s box, a combination which should be shelved and forgotten forever. As the results were distributed, my immediate response was to spout denials, defenses and arguments as to why this tool was rubbish. ENFP? What could that mean?

Was I an Emotionally Neurotic Fatalistic Psychotic or maybe an Extremely Neurotypical Frenetic Procrastinator? My professor noted my apparent angst and confusion before reassuring me that ENFP was an acronym for Extrovert Intuition Feeling Perception.

Basically, the ENFP personality is imaginative and intensely creative, outgoing and mentally grounded in the future. My personality type tends to plan on the go, effectively reads people intuitively and is highly sensitive and emotional. The creators of this tool must have been absolute geniuses because their descriptors of me are uncannily accurate.

As I delved more into the motives behind my decisionmaking and the manner in which I interact with others, I began to feel much better about myself. This certainly explained a lot and knowing that I shared ranks with the likes of Anne Frank, Robin Williams, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Disney and Mark Twain elevated my sense of selfworth.

Apparently, I’m in very good company and have a lot to offer this world in the way of missed deadlines and happy faces. This ENFP personality of mine also reveals much about my relationships with others, particularly with my significant other.

I decided to take the Myers Briggs again recently to confirm that my personality had not undergone a major change and asked Daniel to try it as well. I assured him that my only intent was for him to enjoy a better understanding of my inner workings and that I would refrain from using any of this information against him in the future. I tried

Newsings & Musings Spring Fest already It used to be later in May. Blueberry Festival is pretty close behind-in June-so Spring Fest was moved up to the first Saturday in May. I especially like it because it focuses on Pender County people and their talents. It’s a good time to try Pender crafts, Pender home cooked food and a chance to see Pender friends and visit with them.

Pender has a lot of talented people who enjoy showing their crafts as well as selling them. My husband used to make wind chimes and wooden nativity sets. He loved Spring Fest because of its homey atmosphere and all the crafts that Pender folks were so talented in creating.

So plan to spend Saturday downtown on the Pender County Courthouse Square.

Enjoy a day of activities, browsing, visiting and buying.

By the way, May 8, Sunday, is Mother’s Day. You just might find something at Spring Fest that your mother would like to have. Many of our mothers have gone on to heaven, but Sunday can be a time to tell your families special stories or events that remind us of our mothers and special things we remember about them.

By Edith Batson Post & Voice Staff Writer a rocking chair on the front porch. As we walked home from Tileston School three blocks away, we would stop on the porch to sit and talk or help shell beans. Neighbors would often stop by to visit.

Mama had a chance to rest a while. She was preparing the evening meal for daddy, five hungry growing boys and for me.

Sometimes the boys, especially Johnny, would bring somebody home to eat, especially if we were having french fries. They would eat them as fast as she cooked them. She never complained and always had enough. As the boys grew up they would find mama her favorite wide armed chair and they would get in her lap, no matter if they were bigger than she was.

I now sit in the chair she used for so many years. The wide arms are great for writing or eating as I watch TV or read. On Sunday

we usually had homemade peach ice cream for dessert.

She made her own cream, with fresh peaches and the children would take turns at churning the salt, ice and the ice cream in the middle. It was the best peach ice cream I ever had.

Our church always has an ice cream (homemade, of course), supper and a talent show. I can’t decide whether I am up to doing something crazy or not. I might just try it. We’ll see. The annual Fly In will be held at Stag Park Air Strip on Saturday, May 14. I think I heard that Jordan’s Chapel will have barbecue plates for sale at lunchtime. Check this out.

bench – requires one to sit up straight. The pew was retired for something more comfortable in the mid-1950s, and somehow drifted into my possession. I think the pew may have been secretly engineered to prevent Sunday somnambulism, since even in its secular role, I can never nap on that bench without rolling off and nearly breaking an arm. Its cousin is far less Calvinistic, if not hedonistic.

That bench was saved from a country store that also played host to, at various times, a cotton gin on one side and a turpentine still on the other.

As befits a bench that catered to customers at a mule-plow era retail center, it’s comfortable. The seat is more than a foot wide, made of a single piece of cypress, and firmly footed with heavy pine.

It naps well, to say the least.

No rolling off of that fine piece of furniture.

The previous owner gave me a copy of a photo of the bench in use by none other than a U.S. Congressman and Gov. Charles B. Aycock; I’ll take his word for it. I fear I usually have much more in common with the dozens of farm workers and turpentine crewmen whose overalls polished the green paint than with those who moved and

shook the rail platform with political rhetoric around the same time. My generous friend (whose wife suffered from that dreadful disease called “Get it off the porch”) talked of seeing the bench lined with tanned faces closed in repose, worn brogans sole to sole with their neighbors, tired men sung to sleep with the lullaby of draft horses and mules gnawing corn shucks.

There was no such music to lull me into dragging a minor profit from a lost afternoon.

Instead, I crumpled into an untidy mess with my head in my wife’s lap for a little while. When a half-cracked eye found the window and discovered the sun returning, I sighed and stretched.

Too much work to do to lie there snoring.

But the sun was but shortlived, and as a new shower began singing on the tin roof, I smiled, closed my eyes, and once again benefitted from my father’s common sense, my grandfather’s wise counsel, and the reminder that, on the seventh day, even God rested. I am not one to argue with that kind of logic.

“And the girls out front, they make the restaurant,” Charles continued. “They are the ambassadors, the bolts that hold the place together.

What makes the restaurant is when John walks in, the waitress knows him and he gets his water and coffee on the table before he gets there.”

Then the reality of it, “As long as they’re makin’ money, they’ll stay,” Charles points out, and it’s directly related to the volume of repeat and satisfied customers that come through the door.

Restauranteurs often have associations with other people in the business, and family. “Sean’s brother partners with my brother in a barbecue place, Jackson’s Barbecue.”

“Do you do oyster roasts?”

“Yeah, we do that,” Charles nods, “Fish frys, hamburgers/ hot dogs.”

We talked for a bit about sources of food, especially fish.

“Most of it comes from Argentina and South America. A lot of the catfish, you can look on the box and it’s North Carolina farm-raised.

There’s a lot of catfish farms around here,” Charles tells me, and Sean points out that, “A few years ago when the shrimp started comin’ out of Vietnam, we were still buyin’ shrimp that came out of the Gulf. And the flounder, the flounder that comes out of Argentina, I prefer the flounder that comes out of the North Atlantic. It’s firmer fish, it holds up better on the grill. It’s better when it fries. The other stuff, it’s just mushy.

“We put a lot of thought into where we get our stuff from. The catfish is American, our shrimp come out of the Gulf. We try to buy American as much as we can.”

“Do you ever buy fresh vegetables?” I asked.

“Oh, yeah,” said Sean, “We buy a lot of fresh vegetables.”

Charles adds, “The only vegetables we buy in a can are green beans. The rest of them are frozen or fresh, like zucchini, squash, broccoli. The casseroles, that’s all fresh.”

Charles gets annoyed when people refer to ‘cannedfood’ restaurants. “Where do they get the idea? You can’t make everybody happy, but when you feed 800 to 1,000 people a day, and someone comes in and eats everything on their plate and then complains about it. People come in here and eat, don’t say a word, and leave, and then get on Facebook and complain, blast away about the bad service, the bad food. And they don’t ask for a manager, or a chance to fix whatever’s wrong. Sometimes people come in here in the middle of a bad day, and see a way to take it out on someone else.”

Sean thinks about it, and shakes his head. “People complain ‘the restaurant’s going down the tubes fast’ but on April 24, it’ll be 18

food we wanted to serve. My dad thought it up, he said, “You know, there were a lot of sawmills around here in the early 1900s, and one of the most important times of the day was mealtime, and the most important man at that time was the chef.” I mean, if you had a bad chef, you would run everybody off to the next sawmill camp.

“We try to serve the same kinds of food that would have satisfied the sawmill camp, what people want to eat.”

I told them about my youthful experience, my poor friends, my huntin’ and fishin’ buddy. A single mom back in those days had it hard, and they lived in low income housing in a small town, and even though I knew it was another mouth to feed, often was asked to join in for a Saturday morning biscuit and white gravy, milk and flour gravy with the frying pan drippings, bacon, ham or sausage. I knew they were on the verve of being destitute poor, I knew I shouldn’t be taking food from my poor friends, but I swear, his Momma made the best biscuits in the world, and the gravy has never been equalled. And even though I knew better, I never hesitated to join in when asked, even though I had eaten breakfast at my home earlier.

Charles laughs, “And there are people who say they ain’t ever comin’ back, but a week later you see ‘em again.”

“That happens a lot!” laughs Sean. “A couple of weeks later, they’re back. And when that person comes back, I’m happy to see ‘em. They left mad, the girls are upset, and I tell them, “Don’t worry about it, he’s just having a bad day.

And 90 percent of the time they’ll show back up.”

Charles laughs, “I had a mad customer once, complained there was an oak leaf in his chicken and pastry.

He ate it all and left it on his plate and complained. It was a bay leaf for seasoning.

“He wouldn’t buy it,” Charles said, and slammed his hand on the table for emphasis like the customer, “He just wasn’t buyin’ it, wanted to know why there was a oak leaf in his chicken and pastry!”

Charles and Sean were gracious with their time, but I knew they needed to get back to the business, but wanted to ask them about the name of the restaurant, and the pictures out by the register.

Sean explained, “They come from the NC Archives.

Charles’s father Michael, who’s a partner in the business, he’s the one who went and found all the pictures.”

ArtBeat of Burgaw summer art camps now registering for June 13 start ArtBeat of Burgaw is now accepting registrations for our Summer Arts Camps. They begin June 13 and end July 22. We are offering half-day camps for ages 8-15 years old that focus on visual arts, theater, creative writing, stilt-walking, horses and more. At the end of each week, there will be a Show-andShare with a Friday show.

All camps are $80, with a one-time supply fee for specific individual visual arts camps.

Our morning camps start at 9 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m., and our afternoon camps run from 1-4:30 p.m.

The first week of camp will be June 13-17. In the morning session, we offer the Studio Eco-Art Camp and in the afternoons, our stilt-walking camp, Walk with the Giants. Penney Vasquez will be teaching the Studio Eco-Art Camp for ages 9-15, where campers will intertwine sustainable, natural, and

recycled materials to create their own masterpieces.

Noah Harrell and Ali Boyce will be leading the stilt-walking camp, geared for ages 8-15.

Campers will learn how to confidently and safely fall, walk, and dance on stilts, making their own cardboard chic costumes to create a stilted character by the end of the week. No previous stilt experience necessary. We provide the stilts – you provide the sense of adventure.

The second week, from June 20-24, Noah Harrell and Ali Boyce will lead Adventures in Acting in the mornings, perfect for the aspiring performer who wants to have an opportunity to learn more about acting on the stage. Lynn Watson will teach the Creative Writing camp in the afternoons for ages 12-15, where campers will explore fiction writing and publishing opportunities.

The third week will be from June 27-July 1, with Rebekah Owens and Melissa Ball-Martin teaching our Altered Books camp in the mornings for ages 12-15. What do you get when you mix up an old book with inspired creativity and heaps of art stuff ? An altered book.

A combination of sculpture, assemblage, painting, collage, and just-plain-magic will have campers telling stories in this adventurous camp.

In the afternoon, Ali Boyce will lead the Broadway Camp for ages 8-11. For the Broadway lover, campers will sing, dance, and act scenes for their favorite Broadway hits. The Friday share will include full ensemble numbers for our favorite Broadway musicals.

Week four of camps runs Ju ly 1 1 - 1 5 , w i t h Pe n n e y Vasquez leading a Clay-o-logy camp for ages 9-15. Campers will create clay sculptures dur-

ing the week, using different techniques.

In the afternoon, Maureen McKenna will teach the Art, Horses and Kids camp for ages 8-12. This is a camp for the young equine enthusiast who loves to “talk horses.” Campers will learn about horse anatomy, draw and paint horses, and make horse crafts.

Our last week of camps from July 18-22, with Penney Vasquez leading an Abstract Painting and Collage camp for ages 9-15 in the mornings, and Maureen McKenna doing one more week of Art, Horses and Kids. During Penney’s camp, campers will learn how to paint from their inner souls and let go of objectivity. They will let their creative juices flow by creating mixed-media artwork using collage and paint.

Family finds support from friends, community

By Lori Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer It has been two years since Wayne and Virginia Conner lost their Hampstead home to a fire. The material things were gone, but in the midst of their loss, they found a community overflowing with love and support.

Friends, neighbors and even strangers stepped forward to provide the many things the family needed to help them get back on their feet. The couple said that it is still hard in some ways, but they can see the blessings that came from the start.

The Conner family members are not strangers to adversity. A Vietnam veteran who has survived cancer twice and continues to live with Parkinson’s Disease, Wayne was home alone that day. His wife had taken her mother to a doctor appointment when the fire began, and he called his wife with the terrible news. At first he couldn’t find Bambi, their beloved dog, but he went back in and discovered her behind the bedroom door.

“I panicked. I just lost it, but the blessings actually started right then and there,” began Virginia. “I was falling apart and I had to tell them I couldn’t continue with the appointment. A lady that was sitting there saw how distressed and distraught I was. She came up while I was at the counter explaining, she put her arms around me and just hugged me so hard. She said, ‘I am praying for you, and God’s going to be with you. Go home, drive carefully, and I will be praying for you.’ That was the first blessing.”

Virginia called a friend, John Westbrook, to tell him that her husband was home by himself. He immediately went to be with Wayne. She also called the kids at school and told them what was going

Wayne and Virginia Connor on. When Virginia arrived, firefighters were working as hard as they could to save the house, but the manufactured modular home was lost. When they got what was left of the house under control, they let grandson Brynnen go back in to see if there was anything to be salvaged.

“Brynnen went in and started lifting up stuff, and he found Wayne’s Bible on the coffee table with not a mark on it. Even when they were spraying the fire retardant, it did not get in the Bible or do anything to it. That was blessing number two. We call them God winks,” said Virginia.

Virginia is well-known at the Topsail schools for her presence as a parent volunteer. News of the family’s loss spread quickly, and people from area schools immediately started gathering items for the Conners. Gift cards were collected and some of the teachers went through their

closets to provide clothes for Brynnen, who was still a student at Topsail High. Virginia and Wayne’s son, Chris, is involved in the theater community in Wilmington. The theater community jumped on the bandwagon, as well as the company he works for.

“They had Chris bring us to town and they met us at Old Navy. We stood at the end of the checkout line while they went through shopping, and they walked out handing us bags of brand-new clothes. It was just amazing. We were staying with friends John and Amy Westbrook, and we had to take Mama to my brother’s for two weeks while we could find a place to rent. She was there being taken care of.“ The insurance company put the family up at a hotel in Wilmington, where they stayed for two weeks while they searched for a place to rent. Once they found a rental, Toni Castoro from Hampstead

Furniture contacted Virginia to donate beds. They donated a queen, a full and two twins, and had them delivered the day they moved into the rental.

People in the community gave sheets, towels and outfitted the kitchen completely. Their church, Living Waters Ministry in Ogden, was also a big help. Virginia said there are only about five pieces of furniture in their house that they have bought since the fire.

Everything else was donated.

The Conners have settled into their new home. Virginia’s mother, who lived with them for years, is now in a facility where her needs can be met for progressing Alzheimer’s symptoms. Virginia has turned her mother’s room into a craft and sewing room where she spends her time working on pretty things to decorate her mother’s room at the facility. She also makes fabric doilies and vintage-style aprons, which she sells.

“God’s got this. That’s the way we feel. Wayne has this wonderful saying when I get down in the mulligrubs. He’ll say, ‘We are all soldiers’ - because he has been a soldier, and we’re all soldiers in the army of the Lord. You never can guarantee when you’re going on that battlefield that you’re not going to catch a bullet. I still get overwhelmed by the generosity of this community and people in general.

People just came out of the woodwork, and they made it so much easier for us to go through.

“What I have learned from this is that people will throw kindness like confetti if you allow them to. I’ve always tried to give and bless other people; so when it came down to us having to receive, it was so hard, even though we needed it. It was so humbling – to humble yourself to be able to receive is quite extraordinary,” said Virginia.

Fundraiser May 7 for Pender EMS volunteer fighting cancer

By Barbara Hazle Contributing Writer There will be a barbecue and fish fry at the Hampstead Pender County Government Annex for John Suozzi, sponsored by Pender County EMS and Fire volunteers and Fire Explorer Post 2711 May 7.

Suozzi has been a long term volunteer with Pender County EMS and has recently found out that the cancer he fought several years ago into

remission had returned. The fundraiser is to help him with his medical bills.

“He is the kind of guy who puts the community first,” said Chris Stenerson Captain of Pender Volunteer EMS. “Over the years, when there has been fire college at Cape Fear Community College sponsored by Pender County, John would volunteer the whole weekend teaching the fundamentals of the fire department to the kids in the program. John

is also a member of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club that does fundraisers for our community.”

The food for the fundraiser has been donated by Atlantic Seafood and Wells Pork and Beef, so 100 percent of the money raised will be presented to John Suozzi. Plates are $10 each and include two sides.

The fundraising committee is hoping that there will be enough contributors for a

bake sale. Contact Stenerson at 910-352-2321 to bring items for the bake sale. There will also be a bounce house and the Pender County Fire Safety Trailer for kids and adults to enjoy.

Plates will be available for takeout from 10:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

“Many in our community have come together to make this happen for John,” said Sternson. “We hope to see you there.”

The years devoted to molding him into my ultimate marital image haven’t hurt, either. Daniel likely gave up the fight early on and realized that living in an unpredictable home rife with stacks of incomplete paperwork, remnants of grapevine wreaths in progress veiled under a slight hint of madness truly completes him. And, I love him-I really, really love him.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Heide Trask Titan senior class knows a thing or two about winning conference titles. Coach Corrina Reece’s crew has won three in a row and is looking for their fourth in as many seasons.

Last week they took a step toward that championship as they defeated East Bladen and Midway after disposing of 4A Wilmington Ashley to begin the week.

First up last week was the 4A Ashley Screaming Eagles.

Sophomore hurler Brittany Foy has stepped in nicely after the injury to A.J. Johnson and has made major strides in a short time. Against the Screaming Eagles she used a variety of pitches including a dominating screw ball to shut the Wilmington school down.

The result was a four hit performance that was aided by a boisterous offense that pounded out 18 hits in running away with a 12-2 win.

Lady Pirates capture conference crown

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Staff Writer Every year, as a season begins, teams aspire for four things – a winning record, a conference championship, a playoff spot, and – of course – a state championship.

Last year the Topsail High School softball team finished with a 20-8 record that included a conference-championship 11-1 mark, and they made it to the 3A regional final before dropping two games to Northern Guilford.

That certainly put a target

“It feels good. We have a good team and they believe in each other, they have each other’s back, and they are like a family. That’s what is important,” Coach Jay Abston on the Lady Pirates’ backs as they entered the 2016 season, but the pressure did not seem to faze them.

Topsail exploded for eight runs in the first inning and added seven in the second to roll to a mercy-rule shortened five-inning 15-0 win at South Brunswick Thursday in the final Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference game of the season.

The win provided the Lady Pirates (19-3, 11-1) with their second-straight conference title, and sends them into both the conference tournament and the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs as the top-seeded team. The latter pretty much guarantees Topsail will be home for playoff games through the regional tournament.

“It feels good, we have a good team and they believe in each other, they have each other’s back, and they are like a family, and that’s what is important,” Topsail Coach Jay Abston said. “We have some good players coming up and in a game like today you can get them in there and see what they have, and they did pretty well. Pirates have trouble on the road Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer Putting it simply there are no easy baseball games in the Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference, especially when you follow a road loss to a team that had won 18 games in a row with another road game against a tough team you beat by two runs (7-5) back on April 4.

That was the dilemma the Topsail High School baseball team faced last week when it traveled to Brunswick County for games against West and South Brunswick, and the results were not good.

South Brunswick scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on to upset Topsail 4-3 Thursday in a road Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference game in Boiling Spring Lakes.

Coming on the heels of a 4-1 loss to West Brunswick Tuesday, the two losses put a damper on the playoff chanc-

es. Topsail is 13-8 overall and 6-3 in the conference heading into games with Hoggard (16-4, 7-3) Tuesday at home, Laney (4-18, 0-11) Thursday at Laney, and West Brunswick (20-2, 9-1) Friday at home.

The Cougars (12-7, 4-6) are at Ashley (8-14, 3-7) Tuesday and at New Hanover (13-8, 4-6) Thursday. If the Pirates lose on Friday against West South, they would be tied at 1-3 in the 3A race for the second playoff spot. The second criteria is overall conference record so the Pirates could need win one of the other two games to secure the spot.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 heading into the fourth inning. The Pirates scored twice in the top of the frame to take a 3-2 lead before the Cougars came back with three in the bottom of the inning. Topsail had several chances to win the game but were unable to capitalize on the opportuni-

The Pender Patriot softball team went into last week holding onto the hope of earning a Four County Conference championship. The Lady Pats needed to beat West Bladen in order to have a chance at dethroning perennial conference champion Trask this week. The Lady Knights had knocked Trask from the unbeaten ranks in conference play earlier in the season, giving both teams an opportunity to go into the final week of the regular season in contention for the title. The West Bladen Ladies ended the Pats hopes with a 9-7 come from behind win.

The Lady Knights took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first frame but the Lady Pats fired back, scoring twice to cut the lead to 3-2. Pender scored a run in the second frame and

the score was tied after two innings.

West scored on a double and a fielder’s choice in the third to take a one run lead.

However, this Pender Patriot team refused to give up.

Pender tied the game in the third and went up 6-4 in the fourth on a two run homerun

After a scoreless fifth frame, West Bladen answered in the sixth with a single and a two-run home deposited over the left-field fence to tie the game. Two errors and an active Lady Knight lineup scored three more runs in the inning. The Pats had two innings to erase the three run deficit. They scored one run in the seventh but could not overcome the five run sixth inning barrage by the Knights.

Kicker’s Corner

Of the 17 games that the Trask girls soccer team has played so far, 14 are shutouts.

Either the Lady Titans have shut out their opponent or they have been shut out. The shutout streak is now at 11 games.

Unfortunately both games this week were shutouts in the Titans opponents favor, losing on the road to Four County 2A mate East Bladen 5-0 and at home to perineal 2A power Midway 3-0.

“The first half of the Eagles game was our worst defensive effort of the year, “said Head Coach Cathy Claris. “In the second half we turned our embarrassment into positive

effort the final 40 minutes.

That was encouraging.”

Friday night’s game was a perfect example of blown scoring opportunities coupled with just a few seconds of mental lapses. Playing hard the whole game minus the lapses, the Titans earned the respect of the Raiders “Defensive set pieces are our Titans achilles heel, “said Claris. “If we can find a cure for that ailment, play with intensity and desire the entire 80 minutes and find the back of the net, we will find ourselves the 1A champion in this split conference.”

Sometimes an outside figure can mean the world to a high school program.

When I say an outside figure I mean a non-staff coach or even a parent that gives a team emotional support.

Many years ago I was a non-staff assistant coach for the Trask softball team.

My close friend Ron Watson was the head coach and asked if I could help. I agreed and stayed on board for two years. When I decided to step away from the team Coach Watson asked me if I would recommend someone to take my place.

I had met this little grey haired gentleman at the Dixie Youth field that was the most enthusiastic person that I had ever been around. He was coaching at the middle school level and was doing a good job. I recommended that Ron talk to this gentleman and thus is the beginning of what I will now call Titan Ray Wilson.

Ray was not the most knowledgeable man when it came to the game of fast pitch softball. However,

what he didn’t know he made up for with his love for the girls. You see, it is not what he knows or how he goes about the art of coaching. It is how he feels about every girl that he has ever coached.

Ray loves the game of softball and he loves the softball program at Trask High school. Most of all Ray loves every girl that has passed through the program.

Most people know that I lost my youngest daughter a few months ago. Holly loved Ray Wilson. She always talked about how he always had a smile and a hug when she saw him.

You see folks, Ray Wilson is what is right about high school sports. He has taught all of us that it is not about how many games you win or how good you are. It is about being good to people.

Ray has taught us all about that.

I was recently told that Titan Coach Corrina Reece wants to name the softball field the Ray Wilson field.

I cannot think of a better name for that field. I would implore the powers to be to get this done. It would be a shame if Ray missed the opportunity to see this happen. Now, let me say this – it would be a shame to miss the smile and probably the tears that would accompany this deed.

I love Ray Wilson as do many others in this community. Get it done folks!

Topsail Sports Roundup

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer It was a good week for the Topsail High School sports’ teams, especially the girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams as the regular season wound down and the NCHSAA playoffs roll into view.

Women’s lacrosse The Lady Pirates finished the regular season on a sixgame winning streak that resulted in a 9-7 overall record and a 6-6 conference mark.

It is the first time the Topsail program has fashioned an overall winning record – they were 6-6 in 2013, a, program-best at the time – and only the second time they had a winning conference mark (6-4 in 2013 in the East Central 2A Conference).

In their first two years in the Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference the Topsail girls were a combined 8-18-overall and 8-16-2 in the conference.

Thursday the Topsail girls defeated South Brunswick 13-1. Rachel Hyatt, Emily Doane, and Sam Robbins each scored twice, and Rose Wescott, Erin McFadden, Jenna Woodward, Amberly Wolf, Lily Ruddell, Sam Greco, and Sarah Tulloch each added a goal.

The win produce the second-straight 3A conference title in the last two years.

“It’s a great feeling,” Coach Courtney Burghardt said. “The girls know I don’t care a lot about the score but more on how we play, and each time we played a team the second time we played them tougher, we improved, and that’s what is important to me as a coach.”

Tuesday the Lady Prates rolled over West Brunswick 12-2. Brianna Allman was tough again in goal with 12 saves. McFadden (4 goals), and Doane, Chloe Ruddell, Delaney Popella, and Madeline Matthews each scored twice to take the pressure off Allman.

Wednesday the girls came back and recorded an 11-8

non-conference win over Cape Fear Academy. Hannah Jones led the way with four scores, Maddie DeVries added three goals, and Ruddell, McFadden, Popella, and Matthews each added a single score. Allman rang up 16 saves.

Topsail will be at home on Wednesday for a first-round playoff game against a yetundetermined opponent.

Men’s lacrosse Topsail ended the regular season with a 19-6 win at South Brunswick. Chase Popella continued with the hot hand with six goals and two assists, and Jake Volpe added three goals and four assists.

Nick Haddock put four balls in the back of the net and assisted on four more scores. Leighton Russell had four goals and Spencer Martindale added two more.

The win seals the thirdstraight 3A conference title for the Pirates and guarantees a spot in the state playoffs.

The Pirates finished the season on a four-game winning streak as they head into the NCHSAA state tournament as the conference’s top 3A seed.

The week began with a 19-3 win over West Brunswick.

The Pirates (7-8, 4-8) were never threatened as they led 6-1 after one period and 10-3 at halftime. Popella had seven goals and two assists, Volpe added three goals and four assists, and Haddock scored three times and recorded seven assists.

Also contributing were Randall, Spencer Martingale, Jeremiah Richardson and Kade Ramsey.

Wednesday was a nonconference game against Arendell Parrott Academy and the end result was a 19-5 Pirates’ victory. Popella set a school, single-game scoring record with 10 goals while dishing out an assist on Senior Night.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Last week the area high school teams began to jockey for position in the upcoming state playoffs. the Topsail baseball team fell to South and West Brunswick in what could spell trouble for their hopes of winning the 3A portion of the Mid-Eastern Conference.

Topsail starting pitcher Payton Rice recovered from a rough start to go the distance against the one loss West Brunswick Trojans allowing just four hits the rest of the way.

The Pirates dropped a one run affair to South Brunswick despite a five hit performance from the duo of Payton Phelps and freshman Aiden Smith.

The Lady Pirates sewed up the conference title last week with wins over South and West Brunswick. Hayley Grizzle turned in a 4-for-4 performance against South that included a triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Victoria Elder started on the mound, earning the win despite pitching only one inning.

Elder went seven innings in the Pirates 5-0 win over West Brunswick, giving up three hits and a walk. Elder struck out four with only two Lady Trojans reaching second base. Senior Keri

The Trask men picked up a big win over conference leader East Bladen last week behind a complete game performance by senior right hander Kenny Smith.

Michael Stroman led the bats with two triples and two runs batted in.

Miles Jordan had two hits and two runs batted in along with two runs scored. Senior Jordan Flora pitched a complete game gem in beating Union.

The Lady Titan softball team is two games away from their fourth straight conference title. they earned three wins last week including two FCC wins and a non-conference win over 4A Ashley in six innings.

Taylor Rivenburgh hit two homeruns last week while sophomore Brittany Foy earned all three wins in the circle. Taylor was 4-5 with three runs batted in to lead Trask while fellow seniors Kyra Holmes and Carlie Savage each had three hits.

This week’s top performer is Topsail sophomore Carmen Pyrtle. The super soph scored four goals last week and is leading the team in goals scored with 15 kicks finding the back of the net.

Titans earn two conference wins

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Mother Nature tried her best to stop the Trask verse Union baseball game. After what turned out to be two postponements the two teams finally met early last week.

Coach Daniel Ward chose to send his senior right hander Jordan Flora out to the mound. The hard-nosed hurler turned in a complete game performance in leading the Titans to a 5-4 win.

That was the first of two conference wins last week for Coach Wards charge as they defeated the first place East Bladen Eagles 9-3 at their place.

“That was a big win for us, “said Ward. “When we’re focused we play pretty good.

We’ve made some major strides this year. I think we understand the game a little better and know what we have to do to be successful.

Osgood is a graceful Lady Titan

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Every high school has that hand full of young ladies that are the epitome of a homecoming queen. They have beauty and grace and in most instances they are very good students.

Seldom are these young ladies accomplished athletes.

At Trask High School, several young ladies fit this bill.

The one that stands above the rest both literally and figuratively is senior Taylor Osgood.

Miss Osgood was a standout on the schools volleyball team and has made her mark on the track and field team as well.

She has topped her senior year off with many accolades that include being voted the 2015-16 homecoming queen by the student body.

Throughout all of this the future UNC-Greensboro student has remained humble and grounded.

Throughout her senior year at Trask Taylor Osgood has remained a picture of beauty and grace.

We’re by no means where we need to be or where we want to be, but we’re better.”

Flora has become the ace of the pitching staff for the Titans and when he gets the ball Coach Ward knows what he’s going to get. Against the Spartans he got a focused young right hander who never gives up.

The Titans were up 2-1 after three frames but the Spartans came back to tie the game and go ahead 4-3 in the sixth inning.

The Rocky Point crew fired back in the top of the seventh frame. Two runs gave Flora a one run cushion that the senior standout would not relinquish.

The Titans only managed four hits in the contest but took advantage of a porous Union defense. Flora and Michael Stroman each had RBI while senior Dean Bogan scored twice for the Titans.

Next up was a visit to the front running East Bladen

Eagles. The Titans knew they would have to turn in one of their best performances of the year in order to keep pace with the Eagles.

Ward called on senior Kenny Smith to ignite the defense from the mound. The senior responded in a big way in holding the Eagles to three runs in going the distance.

The Eagles were trying to secure the conference championship while the Titans were trying to position themselves for a run at the state playoffs.

Michael Stroman tripled in the first inning and fellow senior Tynaffitt Davis scored him to give the visiting Titans an early lead.

The Rocky Point hardballers added four more runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead into the third frame.

East scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames but could not string anything together against Smith and his sturdy defense.

Trask scored four more runs in the late innings to seal the victory.

Smith went the distance in earning the win while Stroman led the bats with two triples and two runs batted in. Miles Jordan had two hits and two runs batted in along with two runs scored.

The final game of the week was a home affair with the Midway Raiders. The Sampson County Raiders had won four in a row and five of six coming into the game. Coach Ward opted to go with his senior ace Jordan Flora. The Raiders got on him early and often in beating the Titans 17-5.

The Titans are 7-11 overall and 5-7 in conference play. They hold the second 1A spot in the Four County Conference heading into the final week of the regular season. They played at Clinton on Tuesday before hosting Pender in the season finale.

The Brunswick County travels began Tuesday when the Lady Pirates went to Shallotte and came back with a 5-0 victory over an always tough, well-coached West Brunswick team.

The Topsail girls wasted little time, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.

Bizzell got the ball rolling with a walk and went to third on a single by Randall. White singled to score Bizzell, sending Randall to second. Randall stole third and scored on a single by Makenzie Williams, with White going to third. Grizzle then dropped a bunt, scoring White.

That was all that Elder needed. The talented junior

went seven innings, giving up three hits and a walk. Elder struck out four and only two Lady Trojans reached second base.

The Lady Pirates tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh on a White (3-for-3, 2 R/S, walk, RBI) single, a stolen base, a Williams walk, a fielders’ choice, and a West Brunswick error. Randall added two hits, a walk, and a run-scored to the Lady Pirates eight-hit attack.

The conference tournament begins Monday. Topsail has a bye and will play the winner of the game between fourth-seeded West Brunswick and No. 5 seed Ashley at home on Tuesday. A win there puts them in the championship game at home on Thursday.

Pyrtle leads Lady Pirates soccer team

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Topsail Lady Pirate soccer team could be called a young team in a rebuilding mode. With one senior and 10 sophomores on the squad along with a freshman and a few juniors the team is definitely young.

One of the young players on the team is experienced in the game of soccer and has become the team’s go-to player when they need a goal. That player is sophomore standout Carmen Pyrtle.

Miss Pyrtle is an outstanding athlete. She can play multiple sports and was on the Topsail volleyball team. However, there is no doubt that the soccer pitch is where she belongs.

Pyrtle leads the Pirates in goals scored with 15 shots that have found the back of the net.

She is also a very good defender.

With two years left to play, Carmen Pyrtle may well end her career near the top of the scoring column.

Panfish are biting

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Angling Expert The panfish were biting fairly well in the Northeast Cape Fear River with a number of different bream showing up. There were shellcrackers, bluegill, and pumpkin seed among others.

The fish were hitting worms and a few crickets.

I didn’t see any catfish, but I heard they were biting at night with cut eel and chicken livers working here.

The sea mullet are making their presence known in the surf along with a few bluefish and black drum. Shrimp will work for these fish.

The reds are starting to show up although not in great numbers yet.

There have been some anglers using gulp baits while others are using soft plastics. If you have the time, find a good top water lure and hope one hits it.

That can be some of the most exciting fishing.

The flatfish bite is beginning to pick up in the creeks and marshes.

Gulp bait along with your favorite soft plastics will work here.

The pier fishing is picking up as well. Some nice size black drum has been hooked on bottom rigs with shrimp while a few croaker have been caught as well.

This weeks fishing tip While we talk a lot about fishing in the ocean as well as the rivers, there are a multitude of lakes and ponds in the area. These lakes and ponds are often on private property.

When searching for a new fishing hole, make sure that you know whose property it is on and get permission to fish it.

I have found that if you ask for permission to fish these private ponds, more often than not you will be able to fish them. If you are turned away, you probably have just saved yourself a ticket and a fine or even a ride in Barneys squad car.

Finally, I have heard of several tickets being written for fishing without a license. Folks, it is a whole lot cheaper to get the license than it is to pay the ticket.

Pender splits games in conference play

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Pender Patriot baseball team has begun to find some success in the Four County Conference. Last week was a prime example of their improvement.

The upstart Patriots defeated Union 6-4 last week. Earlier in the week the Pender nine fell to Midway 8-4 and West Bladen 10-2.

Midway came to Pender for a makeup game that was called the previous week due to rain. The Patriots took a 3-0 lead early and went into the fifth frame tied at 3-3.

Midway plated three runs in the fifth frame and two more in the sixth to ease past the Patriots.

Braxton Treto took the loss with two innings of two hit ball that included four runs.

Treto led the Patriots with a triple and two runs batted in while Chase Norris and Justin Fedoronko each had two hits.

Next up was a home contest with West Bladen. The Patriots were again in this contest with the scoreboard reading 3-1 after four innings.

Goff gives Lady Patriots senior leadership

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer When Brianna Goff entered Pender High school as a freshman, she had high hopes of winning a state championship.

She had been very successful in Dixie Youth as well as on the travel ball circuit. The Patriots struggled during her first two years but seem to have come on strong this year behind the play of several young players. Miss Goff should be credited with helping those young players adapt to the high school game.

Goff has become somewhat of a utility player for the Patriots. She has played both second base and first base while swinging a mean bat.

Miss Goff is second on the team with 15 runs batted in and has five doubles on the year.

With the Patriots entering the final week of the season B.B Goff ’s leadership will be important in the team’s playoff run.

Pender went into the top of the seventh frame trailing 5-2 before a five run outburst gave the visiting Knights a 10-2 lead and the win.

Fedoronko took the loss with five innings of ball that included seven hits and four runs. Only one of the runs was earned. Pender was held to two hits on the night.

The Patriots were looking forward to getting back on track when they traveled to Union to engage the Spartans.

The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

They increased their lead to 5-1 after two frames and cruised into the late innings behind the pitching of Riley Murray. Union made a late run at the visiting Pender County squad but fell short with Pender taking a 6-4 Four County Conference win.

Murray went five innings giving up five hits and four runs to pick up the win. Fedoronko led Pender with two hits while Justin Pierce had one hit and two runs batted in.

The Patriots (3-15/3-9) hosted Wallace on Tuesday before playing at Trask on Thursday.

Men’s tennis Thursday in Ocean Isle Beach, Hudson Smith defeated teammate Jason Lohrer in the championship match of the conference’s 3A tournament. Smith and Lohrer will both participate in the 3A regional individual tournament on Friday and Saturday at Barton College in Wilson.

The Pirates defeated West Brunswick 7-2 on Tuesday.

Smith (6-0, 6-1), Same Garland (6-4, 2-6, 10-4), Lohrer (6-4, 6-0), Thomas Rogers (6-4, 6-4), and Austin Lapaiana (6-3, 3-6, 11-9) won singles’ matches, and Smith and Rogers (8-4) and Garland and Lohrer (8-1) won doubles’ matches.

The Topsail team will be at home on Tuesday against Orange High School out of Hillsborough in the first round of the 3A state team tournament.

The Lady Titans are 17-4 overall and 11-1 in conference play going into the final week of the regular season. They are one game up on West Bladen with two conference games to play. Payton Rice recovered from that start to go the distance, allowing just four hits the rest of the way. But the fundamentally-sound – and well-coached Trojans – parlayed a hit, a walk, and a Topsail error into two runs in the bottom of the third inning, and put a walk together with two hits to score an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

But the Pirates offense, although there were some wellhit balls, remained somewhat stagnant. Topsail got four hits – three from designatedhitter Bryce Cota and one from Chase Riker – manufacturing a run in the top of the fifth on a walk to Layne Marcum, a wild pitch, and a clutch twoout single by Cota.

“We hit some balls good and some line drives but we were unable to put together any hits when we needed them,” Chris Blake said. “We started the game with two starters out (Tyler Ording and Garrett Myrka) and we lost Sam (Hall) after one at-bat, and that hurt us, but that’s where the other guys need to step up.

“They got to Payton a little bit in that first inning but after that he did what we needed him to do. We have to execute and we haven’t done that lately.

We play them again next week so we have to get ready for that.”

The game was halted for 20 minutes while she was attended to by emergency medical personnel. The game resumed with a West Brunswick corner kick which was headed toward the Topsail goal. Lady Pirates’ left-back Amanda Allen, playing goal due to Childress’ injury, covered the shot to secure the Topsail win as the Lady Pirates maintained possession and ran out the clock.

A new park opened in Surf City by t h e Pa rk s a n d Re c re at i o n D e partment. It’s giving park visitors a tail-wagging, howling good time.

The park is Bark Park, designed for dogs.

“We had many requests for an enclosed place that dog owners could bring their furry friends and allow them to run free,” said Kristie Grubb, director of parks.

Bark Park is divided into two enclosed areas – one for small dogs and one for larger dogs.

The park features a water fountain for the thirsty park players.

An obstacle course gives the pups a challenging climb and run. The canines don’t know they are playing on hand-me-downs.

“Damage to one of our play systems following a storm made it necessary to remove it,” said Grubb. “The molded plastic slides were saved, dismantled and then used throughout the dog park as play obstacles making Surf City Bark Park quite unique.”

Grubb said to the best of her knowledge this is the only park dedicated to pup play.

She is quick to point out that many people contributed to make dog dreams come true.

“Local resident Hiram Williams volunteered his time and equipment to come out and mulch up the underbrush cutting our site clearing time in half,” she said. “As an Eagle Scout Project, local Scout Bradley Brosovich and his crew worked in conjunction with our maintenance crews to construct the walkways and fence leading to the dog park entrance. Other local scout troops also

came out and assisted with the spreading of the mulch. Several local families also volunteered time to spread mulch.”

The Surf City Bark Park is located adjacent to the Surf City Community Center at 201 Community Center Dr. It is open during daylight hours.

The Bark Park is open to non-resident dogs, but a dog license is required for all playground visitors.

Surf City offers several parks, including Soundside Park, Nelva Albury Park, and the Kenneth D. Batts Fam-

ily Park, and a much used community center. Surf City Parks and Recreation Department provides athletic leagues, summer camps, wellness activities, and a variety of children’s programs.

“We are excited about the addition of this park to our offerings,” said Gr ubb about the Bark Park.

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (James 4:4) James wrote these scathing words to Christians, not to pagans. He wrote to church-going people, not to church-avoiding people. Yet, he called these Christians, churchgoing people “adulterers.� The question could be asked, “Why did the brother of Jesus do this?�

Apparently, these people had decided to focus their lives on personal power, possessions, influence and their own well-being. That made them adulterers in James’s estimation because Christians are the bride of Christ and Jesus represents heavenly things: justice, peace, service, humility and generosity.

When believers give their top allegiance to worldly things like money, fame, power, authority or influ-

ence they become adulterers because they have betrayed their relationship to Christ.

Consider what 1 John 2:15-16 proclaims about this kind of relationship with the world, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.�

A Christian man can’t be married and remain wishywashy about remaining loyal to his wife. He can’t say, “Well, I’ll be loyal to a point; but if I meet some other woman at work or on the street that I like as well or better, then maybe I’ll align myself with her.� That’s obviously wrong in any culture; but many of us do just that in our relationship with Jesus.

Each of us must make the unnatural choice to strive against our inborn tendency to pursue the world’s attractions. Instead, we must work hard to become more intimately entwined with the life of Jesus Christ.

because he wanted to get through to self-satisfied Christians. These followers of Christ were much like the ones that we read about in Revelation 3:15-16, I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth. James knew that such followers of Jesus would read or hear his words and he wanted to declare they had missed the point.

If we think we’re okay being mediocre or lukewarm Christians, then we haven’t understood what the word Christian really means.

Lukewarm Christians are close friends of the world, which is why James calls them adulterers. In a world full of sinful distractions let us strive to avoid that kind of life.

In his book, The Weight of Glory, C.S. Lewis writes, We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered to us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. What would it take today for members of the church to find joy in serving God? It concerns me that far too often we see being a Christian as a boring thing.

If we are willing to take this journey that will lead to heaven then we would be as a wild fire that cannot be extinguished. Sadly, what seems to put out the spiritual fire in many churches and Christians is their own personal fire extinguisher.

Consider this week the words of John the Baptist, I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11) If you find it hard to have joy for the work of Christ, then pray for that spiritual fire to be rekindled. I would also encourage you to try and build relationships with people who have a zeal for God, because it will cause us to desire the same in our own life.

Just imagine what the local church would look like if we were totally devoted to the Lord.

Hope’s Cooking Corner

By Hope Cusick Contributing Writer Here are some special treats for Mother’s Day. The pineapple casserole is one of my best recipes and is based on a recipe from the 1800’s.

Happy Kentucky Derby Day, these recipes will go well with that celebration also along with a cool mint julep.

Pineapple casserole This delicious recipe dates back to the 1800’s and will please everyone in the crowd.

It very rarely has leftovers, yet it tastes as good as the first time around. The recipe may be cut in half if desired.

2 20-ounce cans pineapple tidbits, drained, juice reserved ½ cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch Ÿ cup pineapple juice, from reserved juice 4 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Butter a 10 x 7 x 2 inch baking dish or two quart casserole

baking dish. Set aside.

In a large bowl stir together pineapple, sugar, cornstarch, pineapple juice, eggs, and vanilla. Pour this mixture into prepared baking dish. Dot the top with butter; evenly sprinkle with ground cinnamon.

Bake in a 350-degree oven for 50 to 60 minutes until golden brown on top. Serve hot; or serve cold as leftovers.

Lemon –orange cookies Makes about 12 cookies.

Try these cookies for a special lemon and orange flavor.

These are large cookies, they may be made into smaller sizes if desired.

1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1½ cups granulated sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 2 large eggs 1½ teaspoons grated lemon peel 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon orange juice 1 teaspoon orange zest 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda Pinch of salt 4 teaspoons coarse sugar Preheat oven to 350°.

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs. Beat in lemon peel and juice.

In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt; gradually beat into creamed mixture.

Shape 1/4 cupfuls of dough into balls. Place 6 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Flatten to 3/4-in. thickness with bottom of a measuring cup.

Lightly brush tops with water; sprinkle with coarse sugar.

Bake 12-15 minutes or until light brown. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely. Store in airtight containers.

Peach and bourbon glazed skillet chicken I prefer the thighs in this recipe. It serves 4.

4 4-ounce boneless chicken breasts or 8 chicken thighs Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste 4 teaspoons canola oil 1 m e d i u m sw e e t o n i o n , chopped ž cup chicken broth or stock Ÿ cup bourbon 1/3 cup peach preserves 1-2 tablespoons orange marmalade (Optional) 1 tablespoon cider vinegar Pound chicken breasts lightly between two sheets of plastic wrap to make and even thickness. Season with salt and pepper.

In a skillet heat oil. Add chicken and cook through, browning on both sides, turning occasionally. Remove chicken and cover with foil to keep warm.

Add onion to skillet and cook until caramelized about ;six minutes. Scrape the skillet gently to loosen meat particles.

Add chicken broth, bourbon, peach preserves, orange marmalade, and cider vinegar and cook to reduce to a saucy consistency.

Return chicken to the skillet along with any juices and stir sauce to combine, spooning

sauce over chicken. Serve hot with noodles, rice or mashed potatoes.

Grand Marnier supreme cake This is a cake that is simple and easy to make that tastes delicious.

1 package orange supreme deluxe cake mix 1 3-ounce package vanilla instant pudding ix ½ cup canola oil 4 ounces frozen orange juice 4 ounces water 4 large eggs Ÿ cup Grand Marnier or orange liqueur Glaze 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 tablespoon frozen orange juice 2 tablespoons Grand Marnier Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Grease and flour 10-inch tube pan or Bundt pan. Set aside.

In a large bowl with an electric mixture beat together cake mix, pudding mix, canola oil, orange juice, water, eggs, and Grand Marnier for five minutes.

Pour batter into prepared tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes until center of cake springs back when pressed lightly. Cool in pan for 12-15 minutes turn out on a wire rack and let cool. Glaze cake when ready to serve.

To make the glaze, in a bowl with an electric mixer beat together confectioners’ sugar, orange juice, and Grand Marnier, add more sugar for desired consistency. Pour or drizzle over cooled cake.

Master Gardener Plant Propagation Class May 7 The Pender County Master Gardener Speakers Bureau is offering a plant propagation class to be held May 7 at the Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church, 10255 U.S. Hwy 17, Scotts Hill. The class is scheduled from 10 a.m. until noon and will be led by Master Gardeners Sandra Brown and Steve Bundy.

Several for ms of plant propagation will be discussed including rooting, layering, division, and growing plants from seed. The most effective form of propagation for various plants will be included.

This will be an interactive class in which attendees will have the opportunity to propagate several types of plants that they will take home at the end of the class. Class size will be limited to 20 attendees and a registration fee of $5

Medicare Education Workshop May 9 If you have Medicare questions, plan to attend the Medicare Education Workshop at the Topsail Senior Center, 20959 U.S. Hwy. 17 North, Hampstead. The program will be held on Monday May 9 from 5:30-7 p.m. Kay Warner and John Lutz with the SHIIP program in Pender County will be presenting the workshop. Stephanie Bias, with Senior Medicare Patrol, will be participating to talk about Medicare fraud.
