Pender Tourism Day is May 7 From Staff Reports Pender County Tourism Day, May 7, is a perfect day to Explore. Experience. Enjoy all that Pender County attractions have to offer. “We urge our residents and neighboring counties to take the time on Saturday, May 7, to explore Pender County,” said Tammy Proctor, tourism director. “We are rich in history and outdoor activities.” Several attractions, such as Penderlea Homestead Museum, the Pender County Museum in Burgaw, and Missiles and More Museum in Topsail Beach, offer free admission. Randall Woodruff tion,” Woodruff said. “And our tax software is woefully inadequate. With so much land transfer and sales activity in the county we have to be sure we are keeping up and not missing out on any tax revenues.” Additionally, the BOC will be asking all county staff to initiate a strong customer service commitment to enhance all interactions with the public. All department heads will be responsible for accomplishing measurable results within their departments, and for holding several employee appreciation events. “We have had a strong economic recovery because of the Board, the management team and the outstanding workforce we have in the county,” said Woodruff. “All departments will strive to be more creative and innovative so we can continue this fiscally responsible approach.” There will be three additional budget meetings before the final budget is voted on by the end of June.

Burgaw family hit with 218 percent rate from lender N.C. Attorney General bans car title lender from state From Staff Reports A Burgaw family facing foreclosure on their home turned to an online car title lender for a loan. The loan of $2,900 was supposedly at 18 percent with a final balloon payment of $531. Months later, after repeatedly requesting a copy of the loan agreement, they learned their loan actually came with an interest rate of 218 percent and a final payment of $3,531. When they complained, the defendants threatened that they knew where the family lived and would come take their car. The family had to move their car to keep it safe.

The online car title lender that charged outrageous interest rates and took consumers’ cars with little or no warning is now banned from making loans in North Carolina, Attorney General Roy Cooper said Monday. “Families who need a little extra money to deal with an illness or a layoff deserve a fair loan, not a rip off,” Cooper said. “North Carolina has long made illegal these expensive loans with excessive interest rates, and my office is here to enforce the law for consumers.”

The Pender County Board of Commissioners reviewed the proposed 2016-2017 budget from County Manager Randell Woodruff at the May 2 commissioners meeting. “We’ve done very well of living within our means,” said Woodruff. “Our tax rate of .685 can remain the same and there won’t be any increases to the Solid Waste Fee, Fire or EMS taxes. I foresee no changes in the level of services Pender County will provide to the public.” With a total budget of $55.4 million, Woodruf f anticipates spending approximately $347,000 less than the prior fiscal year. He projected continued sales tax growth, and had not included a potential savings from the county using a new health insurance plan. Pender County Schools would receive an increased appropriation of $1.25 million, Cape Fear Community College campuses would receive a total of $722,000 and several new positions in the Sheriff ’s department are proposed to provide security at the Pender County Courthouse. There is also a 1.5 percent cost of living wage increase for county employees, and a potential new position created for an Assistant County Manager, and the immediate need of an upgraded software system for the tax office. “We would like to provide more oversight and facilitate our operational effectiveness with this new manager posi-
