J.B. Lewis BURGAW -- J.B. Lewis, age 97, of Burgaw, passed away gently on Sunday May 22, 2016 at Pender Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 15, 1919 in Greenville to Howell and Luzetta Lewis. In addition to his parents, J.B. was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Daisy Lewis; grandson, James Lewis; son-in-law, David McLendon; sisters, Alma Ellen, Vera Edwards and Hilda Alexander; and brothers Howell Lewis, Earl Lewis and Jasper Lewis. J.B. moved to Burgaw in 1952 where he and his wife founded Lewis Sausage Company. J.B. was a faithful member of Burgaw Baptist Church where he served three terms as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He also served his community as a member and chairman of the Pender Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, a member and past president of Burgaw Rotary Club, past president of King Solomon Lodge No.138 A.F.& A.M. where he was a 32nd degree Mason, and was a member and past President NC Meat Packing Association. His love and commitment to his community was reflected through his service and devotion to his church and numerous organizations. J.B. enjoyed extensive travels to many countries during the years he was involved in the meat packing business and during his retirement. He derived the most pleasure from his family and their much anticipated reunions at the Lewis Family Farm. He always instilled the importance of education in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his
daughters Ruth Lewis Taylor (William Ivey Taylor III) and Dorothy Lewis McLendon; son James “Jimmy” Bryant Lewis (Linda B. Lewis); grandchildren Roberta LaSure (Bruce), John William Taylor, David McLendon (Berta), Elizabeth McLendon and Tammy Horne; great grandchildren, Taylor and Kristen LaSure, Alarin, Alix, Cypress and Moss Taylor, David and Jose McLendon, and Nicholas Horne; sister Margaret Lewis; and brothers Coye Lewis and Charles Lewis. He is also survived by special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. J.B. will be greatly missed by his loved ones. Funeral services will be at noon Thursday May 26, 2016 at Burgaw Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Burgaw Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday May 26 at 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall until the hour of the service. Dimas “Paco” Betancourt CURRIE -- Dimas “Paco” Betancourt, 62, of Currie, died Monday, May 16, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. Paco came to Burgaw in the early 80’s as a migrant worker and was later married to the late Betty Mae Mitchell of Burgaw. Paco lived in Burgaw until Betty Mae’s death and then moved to Currie with a kind-hearted friend and caregiver Cheryl Keitt. Survivors are three stepchildren: Thomas, Nakea, and Carla Mitchell. Alice Cornelia Squires Johnson ATKINSON -- Alice Cornelia Squires Johnson, 86, of Atkinson, passed gently from her earthly life to her eternal rest May 16, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born on Nov. 25, 1929 in Kelly, the second of four daughters born to Zannie and Fannie Mae Brown Squires. Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Lee Roy Johnson; and sisters, Edna Ceruzzi and Roma Lee Kelly. Alice is survived by her children, Nancy Applewhite (Wayne) and Roy Johnson (Gay), all of Atkinson; grandchildren, Wendy Applewhite, Bryan Applewhite and Jared Johnson (Ivy); great grandchildren, Justin Henry (Ginger), Hope Fussell, Taylor Applewhite and Shelby Applewhite; one great great grandchild, Skylar Henry; sister, Lucille Bramble; special sister-in-law, Kay Jordan (John), special niece, Brenda Ceruzzi (Tommy); nephew, Louis Ceruzzi and many additional nieces, nephews and friends. Jerrell James Jordan received the 2016 45 Under 45 Alumni Award from Saint Augustine’s University during the University’s Stone of Hope Gala fundraiser. He was recognized for his success and achievements as an outstanding Falcon. Jordan is a 1997 Pender High School graduate and continued his education with a baseball scholarship at St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh. Jerrell is married to Ashley Jones-Jordan of Currie and they have three children. Jordan’s parents are Valerie Lee Jordan and Joseph Jordan of Burgaw. He is also the grandson of Mrs. Annie L. Alice, in her sweet, caring, gentle, and humble way made many friends through the years. She was a wonderful homemaker. Alice will always be remembered for her love and devotion as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Next to God, her family was the focal point of her life. Jean Brown Carraway WILMINGTON -- Jean B row n C a r r aw ay, 9 0 , o f Wilmington went to be with the Lord May 16, 2016. She was born in Wilmington Feb. 28, 1926 to the late Avery Burr Brown and Janie Ruth Scott Brown. She is also preceded in death by her husband of more than 60 years, John Carraway; daughter, Leigh Carraway; and sister, Sumaleigh Brown. She was a member of Pearsall Memorial Presbyterian Church for 50 years and Burgaw Presbyterian Church for 40 years. She sang in the choir and was active in the words to the point of numbing redundancy. I sincerely doubt there will be a “hashtag” campaign for my idea anytime soon, much less even a questionable date on the calendar. But that’s okay – I’ll just observe it everyday with as many friends as will join in. After all, we can’t observe every day that someone
