The Media of Record for the People of Pender County Roper resigning Jun 30
School board taking applications through May 14 By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher The resignation of School Board member Tom Roper has prompted the Pender County Board of Education to receive applications to fill Roper’s unexpired term. The Board is receiving applications from individuals living in Pender County Board of Education District 1. The School Board is a non-partisan board, so no political party will decide Roper’s replacement – the Board of Education will. “We are meeting this week and will discuss more on the process of filling the vacancy,” said board member Kenneth Lanier. “I think we will inter-

view all the applicants before making a decision, unless there is a large number of applicants. In that case, there may be some sort of screening process before the interviews. We have to decide as a board how this will go.” Lanier says the board will choose Roper’s replacement by the end of June, in time to swear the replacement in along with new board member Don Hall and returning member Brad George. Roper resigned his longheld seat on the Board of Education several weeks ago, citing personal reasons. For more information on how to apply for the vacancy, see the ad on page 3A of The Post & Voice.

Pender author publishes new book By Barbara Hazle Post & Voice Staff Writer Author Cindy Horrell Ramsey from western Pender County had met the Boys of the Battleship at a crew reunion and wrote a compelling nonfiction account of the ship itself and many of the men onboard plus other observations about the ship itself. Published in 2007, this distinctive, well received and accurate representation of the 2339 crewmen and officers that were at Pearl Harbor on the USS North Carolina that had earned the title of the “Showboat”, was published to rave reviews. Today the men and their spouses of the Greatest Generation live on in a more personal book of historical fiction called Six Hundred Letters Home. “It started with Paul Wieser, who I met at
a Battleship North Carolina reunion,” said Ramsey. “He told me that he and his wife had donated all of his letters to her to the battleship archives and that I could use them. I went and found them and made copies, then started to transcribe all the pages, but my computer crashed and I had to start from scratch. We also met many times in person so I could hear the stories from him, along with being able to pinpoint the cultural references in his letters, like songs and jokes from that time.” Ramsey’s new historical fiction book is based on Wieser’s correspondence that he and his
