By Barbara Hazle Contributing Writer The Pender County Sheriff ’s Office along with officers from county met recently with Pender EMS and Fire Training Officer David Dudding to schedule training for the use of Naloxone. Naloxone also known by the brand names Narcan or Evsio, is an opiate antidote used in the treatment of an overdose of heroin or prescription pain pills such as oxycodone. Naloxone can be injected intravenously or in a muscle, or administered via a nasal spray, and is classified as an opioid antagonist. Sometimes referred to as a “save shot” the

Poplar Grove Derby Day May 7 Cb`m By Lori Kirkpatrick
Poplar Grove Plantation will hold its third Annual Kentucky Derby Party May 7, with the gates opening at 4 p.m. and closing at 8 p.m. The event is being held to support Poplar Grove’s efforts of conservation, education and preservation. It will also help raise funds to support the on site animal sanctuary. Tickets for the event are currently on sale for $50, and include a one-year individual membership to Poplar Grove. The occasion is limited to ages 21 and up. Participants are invited to show off their stylish hats and seersucker suits, as well as less formal attire, if preferred. There will be an open bar featuring mint juleps and apple martinis, and rockabilly music will be performed by The Phantom Playboys. Under the tents, provided by L & L Party Rentals, southern fare selections from The Beam Room will be offered. The Woodford Reserve Turf Classic and the Kentucky Derby will be televised in the barn, and prizes will be awarded for Win, Place and Show. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each for the Woodford Reserve and $10 each for the Derby. All proceeds collected from the raffle races will directly support the Animal Sanctuary. By Jefferson Weaver Contributing Writer Wildfire danger remains high in Pender and neighboring counties in District 8, according to the North Carolina Forest Service. District 8, which includes Pender, Bladen, New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus, and Duplin counties, remains at RP 5 – the highest state of readiness. Readiness Plans are daily action plans that provide a degree of readiness commensurate with expected fire danger for wildfire response. Readiness Plans range in scale from one to five. Each of these steps represents a different level of resource availability. Wildfire crews were wind-
ing down operations at a major Brunswick County fire over the weekend. Brian Haines of the N.C. Forest Service (NCFS) said workers from District Three – which includes Pender County – were among the teams of ground personnel and equipment operators involved in the Clemmons Road fire near Bolivia. Smoke from the 1,500acre fire was visible 40 miles away, and reportedly caused health problems for people as far away as Wilmington. Dense smoke advisories were still being issued by the National Weather Service and the NCFS on Monday. “The rain has been helping

Cigars will also be on site. Other nonprofit organizations, local businesses, and wildlife rescue groups will be participating, including Cape Fear Raptor Center, Pineview Veterinary Hospital, and New Hanover Animal Services Unit. The Animal Sanctuary at Poplar Grove is dedicated to providing aid and support to equines and other farm animals that have been abused, neglected or rejected by their owners. Poplar Grove’s rehabilitation program focuses on each individual animal’s needs for healthcare and medical treatment, nutrition, and careful handling and training; with the aim of restoring the animals’ viability and vitality. Poplar Grove serves as a rescue agency that receives equines from distressed environments; as a placement agency that arranges adoptions for rehabilitated animals; and as a home to the animals not suited for placement. Poplar Grove Plantation is located at 10200 Hwy. 17 N. Tickets for the Kentucky Derby Party can be purchased online at www.poplargrove.org/kentuckyderbyparty, or by calling (910) 686-9518.

naloxone injection works by blocking opiates in the brain long enough to allow the respiratory system and the central nervous system to kick start itself back into action so the person regains consciousness and breathing. If the initial dose does not counter act the overdose drug within two to five minutes additional doses may be given until the person is stabilized. Often law enforcement officers are the first on the scene of an overdose so it can be quickly administered prior to paramedic’s arrival. Chief Sam Gervase of Topsail Beach recently updated

Local law enforcement to carry drug OD save shot Drug can be administered in heroin, opiate overdose situations
By Barbara Hazle Contributing Writer The residents of the Edgecombe community turned out in force at the April 18 Surf City Town Council meeting to express concerns about the upcoming annexation of the 89 acres accessed by Shepards and Perkins Roads for the proposed elementary and middle school campus. Their primary concern was the depth of the easement to the school, the construction through their neighborhood, preserving wetlands and making sure that no other property was being annexed so that they would not be county and Surf City residents simultaneously. Pender County School’s attorney Rick Biberstein, Superintendent Dr. Terri Cobb and Ken Fuller, Chief of Auxiliary Services also attended. Douglas Hardison represented many of the homeowners that were not in attendance. “We have a lot of questions, and we have had a meeting with the school board and the town council, but we really don’t have answers. We want to know what modifications Surf City would make with regard to zoning, and we want in writing that the whole area on both sides of Shepard’s Road will not be annexed. We also feel like this was just a done deal before we found out anything about it.” Biberstein explained a public agency that is buying land is not legally obligated to advertise what land they are buying ahead of time. He also pointed out that all subsequent hearings on the matter had been advertised in the local paper up to this point. Lavinia Shepard expressed concern that the driveway to the school was extremely close to her home, up into her yard. “Can the access be moved further down? Why didn’t the driveway come off of Highway 17?” . Biberstein stated that the road could not be moved and that the School Board did not have a choice, the road being built had already been on the plat as an existing roadway whether it was built or not.
