First school bond sale scheduled for June 7 By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher The first bond sale to fund the Pender County school projects is scheduled for June 7, according to County Manager Randall Woodruff. The first sale will total about $20 million. County voters authorized up to $75 million in bond debt to fund the school projects. All of the money is not borrowed at one time – bond sales are conducted as construction projects progress and money is needed to fund the work. All of the money advanced by the county to the school board so far for bond projects, about $6 million, came out of the county general fund and
sory Board,” said Carolyn Moser, Health and Human Services Director. “There is no need to have a DSS Advisory Board, there is no requirement, we haven’t met in a year and we have had two members resign. We consolidated Health and Social Services back in 2013. I know Chairman Brown supports this and asked for it to be on tonight’s agenda.” Commissioner Demetrice Keith asked what void would be created if the board was dissolved and was
concerned that many of the positive actions taken by members of the board might be lost. Moser said the individuals formerly on the advisory board could continue to be advocates for the DSS. She did not elaborate how this could be achieved, why the Advisory Board had not met in a year, or why members had resigned. In other action, a decrease in the DSS Crisis Intervention Program revenues and expenditures in the

County budget meetings start this week By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher Pender County commissioners will begin work on the upcoming budget this week with the first work session scheduled for April 14. The county manager’s office has received requests from county department heads for funding in the 2016-17 fiscal year budget. County Manager Randall Woodruff is optimistic this year’s budget work will run more smoothly than last year. “We are looking forward to a less stressful budget process. We have been working on it for several months now and all of the departments have submitted their requests,” Woodruff said. Department heads have met with Woodruff regarding budget requests and will next go before the Board of Commissioners to answer questions and make their pitch for funds. Woodruff puts together a proposed budget and submits it to the commissioners at the first May meeting. The board has May and June to work on the final budget and approve the document by the end of June. Commissioners have budget work sessions scheduled for April and May.

item and noted that based on current spending even with the return of funds the county would be able to meet citizen needs. Also, $25,000 grant from the Migrant Farm Workers Program to perform dental services to migrant farm workers and their families was passed unanimously by the BOC. Since no county funding was needed the grant goes directly to the Pender County Dental Clinic.

amount of $105,000 was also approved. “This whole program is state funded so has nothing to do with county dollars. We would like to return that money to the state, to be that team player and help out other counties that are hurting,” said Moser. Keith asked what type of services were offered and if the money could be used elsewhere. Moser said it could not be changed to a new line
