Beach erosion prompts sand push

Are You OK, Hot List programs working

Beach work underway in Surf City Fall storms caused erosion, brings sand push

By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher Several community outreach programs sponsored by the Burgaw Police Department are being received well, according to Police Chief Jim Hock. The Are You OK (RUOK) program, which was started last year, has more than 20 participants. The Police department makes regular phone calls to participants to check on them, going to their homes if they don’t receive an answer at their regular call time. “Right before Christmas, we made some gift boxes for all the folks and delivered them. That way we can put a name with a face,” Hock said. “We have a group that is very appreciative and get a lot out of the program. It makes sure they are fine, as well as giving them someone to talk to. Some of the folks don’t have relatives close by so it’s good. Our numbers in the program are increasing.” Hock says the RUOK program is a great idea in a small community. “Could you do this in a bigger community? It would be very difficult to do. Residents are invited to contact the Police Department with concerns and problem areas they feel need attention. Hock says the department is receiving positive feedback from residents concerning the

The Town of Surf City is halfway through a dune push sand bulldozing project to rehabilitate the beach and dune erosion created by multiple storms in 2015. After a competitive bidding process with strict specifications on the scope of the project the town contracted with C.M. Mitchell of Sneads Ferry. The dune push has a 30day window however due to holidays, inclement weather and low tides during daylight hours the timeline will stretch beyond one month and is moving from the southern town limit northward. “I anticipate they will be done by the end of January or beginning of February depending on those factors,” said Larry Bergman, Surf City Town Manager. “We do follow state guidelines from the Division of Coastal Resources on how much sand we can disturb, and how the slope of the dunes is created. The estimated cost will be about $160,000 and we fund that from our beach nourishment and shoreline protection fund that is supported in part by accommodations taxes.” Resident Marty Martin asked the town council at the recent Jan.5 meeting to consider using plywood around some of the residents’ walkways over to the beach to cap-
