City of St. Cloud Recognizes 72 Employees for Their Years of Service to the City and Community

The City of St. Cloud hosted a special awards dinner on Friday, February 28, to celebrate and recognize 72 dedicated employees for their years of service to the community. The event highlighted the commitment and contributions of city staff who have worked tirelessly to provide essential services to residents.

“I am proud of each of our employees who come to work every day and do their jobs to provide excellent services to our residents,” said City Manager Veronica Miller. “The longevity of these employees is a testament to their dedication to helping us meet our goal of continuing to make St. Cloud a great place to live, work, play, and do business.”

Thousands Join Osceola School District’s “Keeping Pace with Wellness Family Fun Walk/Run 5K” on Saturday

The City of Kissimmee has officially selected Charles “Chuck” Broadway as the 35th Police Chief of the Kissimmee Police Department (KPD). Chief Broadway, a veteran with 29 years of law enforcement experience at both local and state levels, will assume the role by April 1.

His swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Kissimmee City Commission meeting on April 1, 2025.

Chief Broadway most recently served as Chief of Police for the Clermont Police Department, where he led the agency since 2012. Before that, he served as a Special Agent Supervisor with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), overseeing major criminal investigations, violent crime cases, and police-involved shooting reviews. His career began with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), where he worked as a detective and played a role in the 9/11 search and recovery efforts.

Beyond his service in law enforcement, Chief Broadway is deeply involved in professional and community organizations. He served on the executive board of the Florida Police Chief Association and was appointed to its subcommittee on accountability. School District workforce.

McCormick Research Institute’s Horses & Heroes Roundup: Rodeo Thrills Supporting Vets Special Needs Programs

The McCormick Research Institute hosted its Horses & Heroes Roundup on Saturday, March 1, bringing together hundreds of supporters for a day of exciting rodeo entertainment and meaningful fundraising. The event showcased horse trick riding, Roman riding demonstrations, rope tricks, and cowboy gun expertise, all while supporting the institute’s life-changing programs for veterans and individuals with special needs.

Attendees witnessed daring horseback performances, including balloon-shooting stunts at full gallop, while also enjoying pony rides, food trucks, raffles, and other family-friendly activities. But beyond the entertainment, the event highlighted one of McCormick’s core missions—helping veterans overcome PTSD through equine-assisted therapy.

Originally founded as Heavenly Hooves in 2002, the McCormick Research Institute has grown into an internationally recognized leader in equine-assisted therapy. The organization first gained recognition by providing horseback experiences for children with life-threatening illnesses at Give Kids the World Village.

Osceola and Polk counties are growing rapidly, with communities like Poinciana leading that change. The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) is working with local leaders to find ways to relieve traffic congestion resulting from Poinciana’s rapid growth.

CFX is proposing the Southport Connector Expressway as part of a series of new roadways to help Move Poinciana. The proposed expressway would be part of a regional solution for easier and more efficient travel - including making it more convenient to get to Interstate 4 and Florida’s Turnpike.

Study Description

• CFX would widen Cypress Parkway to six lanes to help relieve traffic backups, making travel easier and benefitting everyone.

• Elevated expressway in the middle of Cypress Parkway would let people making longer trips get to their destinations more quickly. That also would mean less traffic on the local road.

• Based on community input, CFX is looking at building the elevated expressway on bridge structures, which would maintain more open, community views; on fill dirt with retaining walls; or a combination of both.

• Cypress Parkway would be improved for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Orlando Health’s Hospital Care at Home Hits 2,000-Patient Milestone in Central Florida

Orlando Health’s Hospital Care at Home program, which delivers acute hospitallevel care directly to adult patients in the comfort of their own homes, has successfully treated over 2,000 patients across Central Florida since its launch in February 2023.

The program, available to Orlando Health patients who meet specific clinical criteria determined by emergency department and hospital staff, is now available through Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital, Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health Emergency Room –Osceola, Orlando Health Emergency Room – Randal Park, Orlando Health Emergency Room – Lake Mary, Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital and Orlando Health South Lake Hospital. In June, Hospital Care at Home celebrated its 1,000th patient admitted into the program.

“This latest milestone reflects the significant growth of our program within less than two years of operation,” said Linda Fitzpatrick, assistant vice president, Orlando Health Hospital Care at Home. “It is a testament to our patients’ trust in this advanced healthcare model and the dedication of our care providers.”

Orlando Health Raises Awareness for Cancer Screenings with Life-Sized Inflatable Colon

Patients, visitors and Orlando Health team members are getting an up close and personal look at what can happen if someone gets colon cancer.

The Orlando Health Cancer Institute, Orlando Health Colon and Rectal Institute and Orlando Health Digestive Institute hosted a Colon Cancer Awareness Month exhibit at Orlando Health Lake Mary Hospital on Tuesday, March 11th.

The event was highlighted by an inflatable colon exhibit that allowed visitors to get a first-hand look at the difference between healthy and diseased colon tissue.

Visitors had a chance to walk through the colon to see various colon issues such as hemorrhoids, polyps, and colon cancer.

Guests also had the opportunity to schedule their colonoscopy.

OCSA Jazz Band A Selected to Compete in Essentially

The Jazz at Lincoln Center has officially announced the top high school jazz bands in the nation chosen to compete in the 30th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, set to take place from May 7-11, 2025, in New York City. Among the elite finalists is the Osceola County School for the Arts Jazz Band A, led by director Jason Anderson.

This marks another significant achievement for the talented young musicians, who proudly represent not only their school and county but also the entire state of Florida. The Osceola County School for the Arts Jazz Band A is the only high school jazz band from Florida to earn a spot in this prestigious competition.

Last year, the Osceola County School for the Arts (OCSA) Jazz Band A delivered an incredible performance at the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, placing second behind Newark Academy from New Jersey. Alongside their strong finish, OCSA earned prestigious sectional awards, including Outstanding Rhythm Section and Outstanding Brass Section, cementing their reputation as one of the top high school jazz bands in the nation.

Thirteen Osceola Students Honored by OUC for Inspiring Energy Conservation Through Art

Thirteen Osceola County Public School students were honored at Osceola Arts by Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC—The Reliable One) for their outstanding efforts in raising awareness about energy conservation.Their dedication to sustainability and innovation is making a difference in our community, inspiring others to take action for a greener future!

OUC launched the Watts Savings Project to educate 4th and 5th grades about the importance of sustainable energy use. Students collaborated with their teachers to create artwork that illustrates a positive message or slogan about energy conservation. Thirteen students were selected to be featured in OUC’s 2025 Energy Conservation Calendar, and the community chose a Lakeview Elementary 5th grade student’s artwork for the cover.

FDOT’s Moving I-4 Forward Program to Accelerate Congestion Relief in Osceola County

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has commenced work on the Accelerated Start Project, a key initiative under the Moving I-4 Forward program designed to relieve congestion and enhance safety along a heavily traveled stretch of Interstate 4 (I-4) in Osceola County.

The project focuses on a 7.5-mile section of I-4 from east of U.S. 27 to east of World Drive, one of the most congested segments of the interstate. To provide motorists with accelerated relief, FDOT is prioritizing the construction of two new congestion relief lanes—one in each direction—on the inside of the existing mainlines.

Expected Completion: End of 2025

Interchanges Affected: ChampionsGate Boulevard & World Drive

The Wall That Heals: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Replica Coming to Kissimmee

A powerful tribute to the heroes of the Vietnam War is coming to Kissimmee Gateway Airport as The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be on display from March 13 – 16, 2025.

This moving exhibit, which includes a mobile Education Center, offers a meaningful opportunity for veterans, their families, and the community to honor, reflect, and heal.

Since its debut on Veterans Day in 1996, The Wall That Heals has visited nearly 700 communities nationwide, providing millions of visitors with a space to connect with their memories, pay tribute to fallen service members, and experience the memorial’s powerful message of healing.

Event Details and Opening Ceremony

The free, 24-hour public exhibit will open at Kissimmee Gateway Airport on March 13, remaining accessible until 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 16. Before its opening, the memorial will receive a special honorary escort into Kissimmee on March 11, followed by its assembly and setup in preparation for the display.

Osceola County Launches Updated SHIP Home Purchase Assistance Program

Residents and families in Osceola County now have a greater opportunity to achieve homeownership through the updated SHIP Home Purchase Assistance Program. This initiative is designed to make owning a home more accessible by providing financial support and guidance to eligible participants.

The updated program includes:

A maximum purchase price of $360,000 for single-family homes, townhomes, or condos located within Osceola County.

Strict adherence to program guidelines to ensure fair distribution of funds and resources.

Osceola County Announces Public Meeting for Nova Road Widening Project Study

Osceola County will hold a Public Meeting for the Nova Road Widening Project Development & Environment (PD&E) Study by either a virtual meeting via GoToWebinar on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., or an in-person meeting on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The purpose of this Study is to evaluate the two-lane to four-lane widening of Nova Road and add bicycle and pedestrian features throughout the corridor. The public meeting is being held to present information and receive community feedback.

Osceola County is offering multiple ways for the community to participate in the meeting. All participants, regardless of which platform they choose, will receive the same information.

In-Person Option: The community is invited to attend an open house at the St. Cloud Community Center, Magnolia Room, 3101 17th Street, St. Cloud, Florida 34769 on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Attendees will have an opportunity to come anytime between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to view a looping presentation and project displays, speak with project team members, and provide comments.

Kissimmee Police Seek Public’s Help on 21st Anniversary of Kelly Balderas Cold

The Kissimmee Police Department is renewing its call for the public’s help in solving the 21-year-old cold case of Kelly Balderas, a case that has remained unsolved for over two decades.

On March 6, 2004, officers responded to the Breeze Inn motel, located at 900 East Vine Street, in reference to an unresponsive woman found in room 116. Upon arrival, the body of 22-year-old Kelly Ann Balderas was discovered.

Initial investigations revealed signs of foul play, and the incident was later classified as a homicide. Despite extensive investigative efforts over the years, Kelly’s murder remains unsolved.

Investigators are urging anyone with information—no matter how small—to come forward as they continue to seek justice for Balderas and her family. The department remains committed to uncovering the truth and bringing closure to a case that has haunted the community for years.

Individuals who wish to remain anonymous may report information through CRIMELINE by calling 1-800-423-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest or resolution of this case.

Starting Monday, March 10, in the City of Kissimmee there will be a temporary traffic change at the intersection of Ball Park Road and Dyer Blvd as part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and safety. The left turn lanes at this intersection will be temporarily closed until the ongoing traffic signal project is completed, which is expected to be finished in early June 2025.

In the interim, vehicles will be restricted to right turns only from Ball Park Road onto Dyer Blvd.

Undefeated Season: Harmony’s Nathan Lyttle Wins State Wrestling Championship

For the second time in school history, Harmony has an undefeated state wrestling champion.

On Saturday afternoon in a packed Silver Spurs Arena, junior Nathan Lyttle completed a perfect season (48-0) with a thrilling 2-1 win over Lake Mary’s Damonyal White.

The first period ended with both wreslters on their feet in a 0-0 standoff. Starting on the bottom, Lyttle reversed White midway through the second period for his only points of the match. Starting on top, Lyttle did a masterful job of riding White out for more than 80 seconds of the period before White narrowed the gap to 2-1 with an escape at the :36 mark of the match. Neither wrestlers would score the rest of the way , with Lyttle hanging on for the one-point win.

“He (White) was one of the few wrestlers I hadn’t competed against or seen this season,” Lyttle said. “Our styles are pretty much the same. I got the reversal in the second and being able to ride him out for most the third was a huge factor.”

“The conclusion of a great season for Nathan,” Harmony coach Vic Lorenzano said. “I thought White wrestled a smart match. When wrestlers attack Nathan, he usually counters those attacks and scores off of them. I think White knew that by staying cautious, he could keep the match close and have a shot.”

Harmony Longhorns Lay the Foundation for Long-Term Baseball Success

While it is not uncommon in Osceola County for a senior-laden sports team making a deep run in the FHSAA playoffs, it’s quite a different story to build a program where you are able to repeat that success year-after-year-after-year. Osceola football and volleyball, St. Cloud weightlifting and Celebration boys soccer are a few of those schools that come to mind as perennial powers.

And while it may be too early to place Harmony baseball in that category, head coach Heath Williams appears to be building a top program with the Longhorns. In the last two years, the Longhorns have won back-to-back OBC championships and then rode the success of a 2024 District title all the way to the regional finals—where they came up one game short of a 7A Final Four appearance.

Given the immense amount of talent that graduated off of that team, starting with AllCounty selections Evan Christ, Iziah Santiago and major contributors Ashton Magorrian, Yathaniel Matos, and David Arroyo, it goes to reason that the Longhorns may be looking at a rebuilding year in 2025.

Not necessarily so, says Williams. “We graduated 10 seniors last season – nine of which are playing at the next level – but to tell the truth this year’s squad may be the most talented I have ever had.”

Harmony’s Hot Streak Continues with 8-0 Shutout Over Osceola

Sophomore lefthander Trevin Bean threw four innings of one-hit ball and Samuel Castillo scored three runs as the Harmony won their 11th straight game with an 8-0 shutout of rival Osceola on Friday night.

Since a 5-3 season-opening loss to Rockledge, the Longhorns have been on a heater. During the 11-game winning streak Harmony has averaged almost 10 runs a game and has out-scored the opposition 108-34 in the process.

“I would never downplay an 11-game winning streak, because that’s hard to do in any level of baseball,” Harmony coach Heath Williams said. “Still, I don’t think we have started to scratch our potential. Our focus and intensity is not where it needs to be, but we are getting the results. Tonight, I felt it was our most complete game of the season.”

The performance started with its pitching. Bean, just a sophomore, was outstanding – allowing just one hit in his start – striking out five. He pitched out of a first and second with no outs situation in the second inning and after giving up back-to-back walks with out in the fourth retired the next two batters to keep the shutout going.
