Silver Spurs Riding Club’s Special Rodeo: A Legacy of Love, Passion, and Inspiration
Decades ago, a touching story of love and inclusion began with Fran McLaughlin, a dedicated member of the Silver Spurs Riding Club. During a visit to the “Exceptional Rodeo” at the 1987 National Finals Rodeo, Fran was deeply inspired by what she witnessed. Motivated by her own child with special needs, she envisioned an event where all children in Osceola County, regardless of their abilities, could experience the excitement and joy of rodeo. From this vision, the Special Rodeo was born.
For over 30 years, the Special Rodeo has fostered a meaningful connection between Osceola County’s youth and the rich western traditions of the Silver Spurs Riding Club, offering children the opportunity to ride horses, rope a steer dummy, or sit atop the famous Big Blue Boot, all with the support of volunteers, rodeo queens, contestants, and club members.
The day concludes with cheers, trophies, and a celebration of the courage, spirit, and love these children bring to the event.
Today, the legacy of the Special Rodeo is carried forward by Silver Spurs Riding Club members Bridget Coggins and Sara Berlinski, and a huge team of passionate volunteers, like former Big Boss Gary Ketchum and others, who help the special kiddos get up on a horse before they make their way around the iconic Silver Spurs Rodeo dirt.

Get ready to turn Downtown St. Cloud green as the city’s annual Paint the Cloud Green – Light Parade & Street Party returns on Saturday, March 15, from 7:30 PM to 11 PM. This St. Patrick’s Day-themed celebration promises an evening filled with live music, family fun, and festive energy, bringing the community together for one of the most anticipated events of the season.
A Parade of Lights and Community Spirit

St. Cloud Fire Rescue Welcomes 11 New Firefighters, Promotes Key Leaders in Pinning Ceremony
The St. Cloud Fire Rescue Department held a pinning and promotional ceremony on Monday, February 24, welcoming 11 new firefighters, swearing in a new Deputy Chief of Professional Standards, and celebrating the promotion of three staff members to key leadership roles. This event underscored the department’s commitment to public safety and its continued efforts to meet the evolving needs of the growing community.
“I’m proud to welcome these new firefighters into the department, and to promote such outstanding staff to roles I have every confidence they will fulfill with excellence” said Fire Chief Jason Miller. “In an era of increasing complexity and risk, hiring and promoting quality personnel is the best investment we can make in public safety.”
New SCFR Firefighters Dylan Arias, Blake Carter, Carson Estrada, Antonio Falotico, David Hunter, Christopher Maldonado, Shawn McAllister, Travis Peterson, Jacob Snow, Brandon Taylor, and James Yeager each completed a rigorous training program and are now sworn to serve the residents of the City of St. Cloud.
Deputy Chief of Professional Standards Michael Capranica, who joined the department last month, also was sworn into service as part of the ceremony.

The highly anticipated Taste of Kissimmee event took place on Friday, February 21 at Ruby Plaza in Kissimmee Lakefront Park, and it was a resounding success. The event brought together the community to celebrate local flavors, live music, and fellowship in a vibrant and festive atmosphere.

Orlando Health’s Hospital Care at Home Hits 2,000-Patient Milestone in Central Florida
Orlando Health’s Hospital Care at Home program, which delivers acute hospitallevel care directly to adult patients in the comfort of their own homes, has successfully treated over 2,000 patients across Central Florida since its launch in February 2023.
The program, available to Orlando Health patients who meet specific clinical criteria determined by emergency department and hospital staff, is now available through Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital, Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health Emergency Room –Osceola, Orlando Health Emergency Room – Randal Park, Orlando Health Emergency Room – Lake Mary, Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital and Orlando Health South Lake Hospital. In June, Hospital Care at Home celebrated its 1,000th patient admitted into the program.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center has officially announced the top high school jazz bands in the nation chosen to compete in the 30th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, set to take place from May 7-11, 2025, in New York City. Among the elite finalists is the Osceola County School for the Arts Jazz Band A, led by director Jason Anderson.
This marks another significant achievement for the talented young musicians, who proudly represent not only their school and county but also the entire state of Florida. The Osceola County School for the Arts Jazz Band A is the only high school jazz band from Florida to earn a spot in this prestigious competition.
Last year, the Osceola County School for the Arts (OCSA) Jazz Band A delivered an incredible performance at the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, placing second behind Newark Academy from New Jersey. Last Wednesday, Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital proudly unveiled the expansion of its emergency department, marking the facility’s first operational expansion since 2018. This expansion is designed to accommodate the continuous growth in patient volume, with the addition of nine new patient rooms, bringing the total to 29 rooms in the emergency department. These enhancements will allow the hospital's team members to provide even more compassionate and efficient care, resulting in shorter wait times and quicker recovery for patients.

The excitement of rodeo returns to Osceola County as the 154th Silver Spurs Rodeo gears up for a week of action-packed events, kicking off with the Silver Spurs Rodeo Parade and Monster Bulls on February 15, followed by four days of top-tier rodeo competition from February 20-23 at Osceola Heritage Park.
One of Florida’s most cherished rodeo traditions, the Silver Spurs Rodeo will feature the sport’s seven classic events, including bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, team roping, calf roping, and steer wrestling. The Wall That Heals: Vietnam Veterans Memorial Replica Coming to Kissimmee
A powerful tribute to the heroes of the Vietnam War is coming to Kissimmee Gateway Airport as The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will be on display from March 13 – 16, 2025.
This moving exhibit, which includes a mobile Education Center, offers a meaningful opportunity for veterans, their families, and the community to honor, reflect, and heal.
Since its debut on Veterans Day in 1996, The Wall That Heals has visited nearly 700 communities nationwide, providing millions of visitors with a space to connect with their memories, pay tribute to fallen service members, and experience the memorial’s powerful message of healing.
Event Details and Opening Ceremony
The free, 24-hour public exhibit will open at Kissimmee Gateway Airport on March 13, remaining accessible until 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 16. Before its opening, the memorial will receive a special honorary escort into Kissimmee on March 11, followed by its assembly and setup in preparation for the display.

Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1
Successfully Lands on the Moon
In a major milestone for commercial spaceflight and lunar exploration, Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 successfully touched down at 3:34 a.m. EST on Sunday, landing near Mons Latreille, a volcanic feature within the Mare Crisium basin on the Moon’s northeastern near side. This marks Firefly’s first lunar landing and a significant achievement for NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative and Artemis campaign.
The Blue Ghost lander, which remains in an upright and stable configuration, carried 10 NASA science and technology payloads, designed to operate on the Moon for approximately one lunar day (14 Earth days). These instruments will conduct critical experiments to refine NASA’s future lunar and deep space exploration strategies.

Harmony Edges Out Wellington and Osceola to Claim Region 3 Wrestling Title
While Harmony head coach Vic Lorenzano says his team does not have the overall depth that it has had in the past couple of years, he would have a hard time convincing the other 30 schools at the FHSAA Class 3A, Region 3 Wrestling Championships of that.
The Longhorns won a total of four individual championships and placed three others in the top four to win the team title with 164 points. Harmony edged out second-place Wellington (159) and third place Osceola (132.5) for the championship.
“Wrestling especially in the State IBT (Individual Bracket Tournament) is such an individual sport. You obviously are trying to get as many as your wrestlers as possible to states,” Lorenzano said. “But the team score and the team championship certainly means something to our kids, coaches, parents and fans. Regionals are always going to be a tough tournament with a talented field, and it was a great weekend for us.”
In the growing wrestling rivalry between Osceola and Harmony, it was the first time this season the Longhorns came out in front of Osceola – at the Kowboys who both the Orange Belt Conference and District Championships earlier this year – as well as finishing in front of Harmony in both the district and regional dual meet tournaments.
Harmony Longhorns Lay the Foundation for Long-Term Baseball Success
While it is not uncommon in Osceola County for a senior-laden sports team making a deep run in the FHSAA playoffs, it’s quite a different story to build a program where you are able to repeat that success year-after-year-after-year. Osceola football and volleyball, St. Cloud weightlifting and Celebration boys soccer are a few of those schools that come to mind as perennial powers.
And while it may be too early to place Harmony baseball in that category, head coach Heath Williams appears to be building a top program with the Longhorns. In the last two years, the Longhorns have won back-to-back OBC championships and then rode the success of a 2024 District title all the way to the regional finals—where they came up one game short of a 7A Final Four appearance.
Given the immense amount of talent that graduated off of that team, starting with AllCounty selections Evan Christ, Iziah Santiago and major contributors Ashton Magorrian, Yathaniel Matos, and David Arroyo, it goes to reason that the Longhorns may be looking at a rebuilding year in 2025.
Not necessarily so, says Williams. “We graduated 10 seniors last season – nine of which are playing at the next level – but to tell the truth this year’s squad may be the most talented I have ever had.”
