Osceola Library System Seeks
Community
Input to Shape the Future of Local Libraries
The Osceola Library System is taking a major step toward enhancing its services and spaces with the creation of a new Facilities Master Plan—and they’re asking the community to help lead the way.
Designed to guide the growth and development of library services, spaces, and collections for years to come, the Facilities Master Plan will serve as a blueprint for what modern, essential library access should look like across Osceola County.
To ensure that this vision reflects the needs and hopes of local residents, the Library is launching a short community survey and inviting every Osceola County resident to participate.
The survey gathers feedback on what residents would like to see in their local libraries— from specific amenities and features to input on where new or expanded libraries may be needed most. It includes sample images showcasing potential future designs, spaces, and services, allowing participants to visually engage with the possibilities and share their preferences.
“We’re building a long-term vision, but it starts with listening to our community,” said representatives from the Osceola Library System. “Whether you use the library every week or haven’t been in a while, your voice matters.”

“More Than” Campaign to Redefine Child Care
The Early Learning Coalition of Osceola County has launched a new outreach campaign titled “More Than”, a three-month initiative aimed at transforming how the community views early childhood education. The campaign seeks to dispel the common misconception that child care centers are simply babysitting services, and instead highlights the critical role early learning programs play in setting children up for lifelong success.
“The early years are the most important years of a child’s life. The Early Learning Coalition of Osceola County is here to be a partner with families, working together to make sure that all children in our community have what they need to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.”
Coalition of Osceola
– Amanda Kelkenberg, Early Learning
County, Chief Executive Officer
Through the campaign, the Coalition is raising awareness about the value of quality early learning environments, where children not only receive care but begin developing essential skills like early literacy, emotional regulation, socialization, and confidence.
The Coalition connects families to programs like Florida’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK), which is free for 4-year-olds regardless of income, and the School Readiness (SR) Program, which offers financial assistance for quality child care.

Janer also invited the public to attend this year’s Pioneer Day on November 8 — a free, family-friendly event featuring live music, craft stations, historical demonstrations, and a real Florida market.
Guests will also have the chance to meet resident farm animals, including a goat named Buster and a few chickens that call the village home.

FWC Launches “GatorWise” Campaign to Promote Alligator Safety Across FloridaAwareness
With alligator activity increasing throughout Florida’s waterways, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is urging residents and visitors to stay alert and “Be GatorWise.” The newly launched public awareness campaign is designed to encourage safer behaviors around alligators and provide consistent, science-backed guidance to reduce the risk of conflict.
As more people move to and visit areas near lakes, ponds, and other freshwater bodies, the potential for human-alligator interactions has grown. “Florida has seen tremendous population growth in recent years, with many people living or recreating near water,” said Matthew Nichols, FWC Alligator Management Program Coordinator. “Because alligators can be found in nearly any waterbody in Florida, it’s safest to always assume they’re present.”
GatorWise offers unified safety messaging developed in coordination with 11 wildlife agencies across the American alligator’s native range. The campaign aims to correct misconceptions and provide practical tips for coexisting with these important reptiles, which play a key role in maintaining healthy freshwater ecosystems.
Florida is home to approximately 1.3 million alligators. To help avoid dangerous encounters, the FWC recommends the following precautions:
FWC Launches Largest-Ever Revegetation Project to Restore Lake Kissimmee’s Aquatic
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced the largest revegetation initiative in its history, launching a transformative restoration effort on Lake Kissimmee aimed at reviving native plant communities and enhancing critical wildlife habitat.
Backed by a $2.35 million investment over two years—supported by the Florida Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis—the project is part of a broader FWC-led strategy to restore the entire Kissimmee Chain of Lakes system. This large-scale effort is focused on improving water quality, strengthening aquatic habitats, and supporting species such as the endangered Everglade snail kite and Florida bass.
“Native aquatic grasses are vital for the success of freshwater ecosystems,” said Melissa Tucker, Director of FWC’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation. “We’re pleased with the success of the previous plantings and look forward to continuing to improve the habitat on Lake Kissimmee.”
Over the past seven years, FWC and its partners have planted more than 686,000 native aquatic plants—including maidencane, Egyptian paspalidium, and bulrush—along the lake’s shorelines. This spring, an additional 534,545 plants and 1,100 wetland trees were added along the western, southern, and eastern shorelines, as well as around Brahma Island, enhancing nesting and foraging areas for wildlife.

1,000 Florida Students Dive into Swim Safety at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon During World’s Largest
Walt Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon made a splash for a powerful cause on Thursday as it hosted 1,000 students from seven Florida nonprofit organizations during the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson—an annual global event organized by the World Waterpark Association to promote swim safety and drowning prevention.
Children from organizations including Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, Girl Scouts of Citrus, Alianza Center, Foundation for Foster Children, ELEVATE Orlando, PACE Center for Girls, and Boys & Girls Clubs took part in the engaging and educational experience. The Disney site marked the largest single location worldwide to participate in this year’s event.
More than 50 Disney lifeguards led the lessons, offering students expert instruction in water safety and basic swim skills, while 40 Disney VoluntEARS cheered them on. For many of the children, it was their first-ever swim lesson—made even more memorable by surprise appearances from Mickey Mouse and Stitch, who joined in the fun and celebrated with the kids.
“Hosting an event like this gives our cast members the chance to not only connect with the kids in our community, but to share something they’re knowledgeable and passionate about,” said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, Director of External Affairs at Walt Disney World.
St. Cloud City Council to Interview Staff Over Special Event Bookings, Seeks to Save Taxpayer Dollars
At a special meeting Thursday evening, the City of St. Cloud, Florida City Council voted 4-1 to move forward with interviews of two city employees to gain clarity on how the city has been handling special event bookings.
“Nobody’s saying anybody did anything wrong. This isn’t a ‘gotcha’ on anything. I’ve just got some questions that I need answers for,” said Mayor Chris Robertson during the meeting.
According to the City Charter, Council members are permitted to conduct investigations if they believe it is necessary. However, Deputy Mayor Ken Gilbert emphasized that this situation shouldn’t be viewed as a formal investigation.
“We have couple of questions for a couple of folks; we’re not ‘investigating’,” Gilbert said. “It just convolutes what we’re trying to get after. We’re just trying to ask questions to save taxpayer dollars. Shouldn’t Council be able to talk to heads of departments? How do we change it to not make it an ‘investigation’ but just a couple of questions? I think there could be a simpler way.”
The Council plans to schedule a meeting to speak with Economic Development Director Antranette Forbes and Parks and Recreation Manager Erin Jenks. Because Forbes has officially resigned from the city effective Friday, July 4, and may no longer be employed at the time of the meeting, Mayor Robertson requested that she be subpoenaed to

Draper Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?
Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.
Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.
Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital Recertified
as Advanced Primary Stroke Center
Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital has once again earned national recognition for its commitment to exceptional stroke care. The hospital has been recertified by The Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center, a prestigious designation that reflects a hospital’s commitment to meeting high standards in clinical performance and patient outcomes.
Originally certified in 2023, this recertification acknowledges the hospital’s consistent efforts in delivering timely, life-saving care to stroke patients. When a patient exhibits warning signs of a stroke—such as facial drooping, arm weakness, or speech difficulty—a “stroke alert” is immediately initiated, activating a hospital-wide response designed to reduce brain damage and improve recovery outcomes.
“Access to rapid, expert stroke care saves lives, preserves brain function, and ensures patients have the best possible chance at recovery,” said Stacy Jemtrud, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, CENP, chief nursing officer at Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital. “Our team is equipped to provide this critical treatment to patients in our community.”
Since launching its stroke program in May 2022, the hospital has responded to 1,702 stroke alerts and treated 292 stroke patients—a testament to the facility’s readiness and effectiveness in emergency stroke care.

SeaWorld Orlando is welcoming royalty this summer—feathered royalty, that is. For the first time in the park’s history, Emperor Penguins, the largest and most majestic of all penguin species, are arriving at the Antarctica Realm beginning June 14, making SeaWorld Orlando the only place in the Western Hemisphere where guests can see these incredible birds in person.
Known for their impressive size, elegant black-and-white plumage, and remarkable adaptations to life in Antarctica, emperor penguins are true icons of the icy wilderness. These birds can dive deeper than any other bird species, with some plunges reaching more than 1,800 feet. Their courtship, nesting, and chick-rearing behavior has fascinated scientists and animal lovers alike for decades.
SeaWorld Annual Pass Members will receive exclusive early access to the new habitat on June 12 and 13, giving them a first glimpse of the emperors’ commanding presence and unique behaviors before the exhibit opens to the general public.
To celebrate the emperor penguins’ grand arrival, SeaWorld has partnered with the Creative City Project to launch “Big City Penguins,” an imaginative art installation featuring three towering penguin sculptures placed on rooftops across Downtown Orlando. The playful display includes two 14-foot-tall adult penguins and a 10-foot baby penguin, giving locals and visitors alike a whimsical preview of what’s to come.
